In the present study, the aim is to synthesize the particulate nanocomposites with difunctional and trifunctional epoxy blend as matrix and synthesized nanoporous materials as fillers. Organic/inorganic hybrid networks were prepared by the novel solvent free method. Viscoelastic, thermal, and electrical properties of di- and trifunctional epoxy and the effect of different nanoparticles in the particulate nanocomposites have been studied by dynamic mechanical analyzer, thermogravimetry (TGA), and dielectric strength. Epoxy mixed with different compositions of TGPAP and particulate nanocomposites by the addition of different types of nanomaterials shows higher storage modulus than the pure epoxy. The addition of TGPAP and nanofillers decreases the thermal stability of epoxy matrix. The evolved gas analysis (TG-FTIR) was also done in order to study the products formed during degradation. An increase in dielectric strength and impact strength (4%) was also observed in the particulate nanocomposites.

Bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (DGEBA) was blended with polyetherimide (PEI) as a thermoplastic toughener for thermal stability and mechanical properties as a function of PEI contents. The thermal stability and mechanical properties were investigated using a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) and a universal test machine, respectively. The TGA results indicate that PEI addition enhanced the thermal stability of the epoxy resins in terms of the integral procedural decomposition temperature (IPDT) and pyrolysis activation energy (Et). The IPDT and Et values of the DGEBA/PEI blends containing 2 wt% of PEI increased by 2% and 22%, respectively, compared to those of neat DGEBA. Moreover, the critical stress intensity factor and critical strain energy release rate for the DGEBA/PEI blends containing 2 wt% of PEI increased by 83% and 194%, respectively, compared to those of neat DGEBA. These results demonstrate that PEI plays a key role in enhancing the flexural strength and fracture toughness of epoxy blends. This can be attributed to the newly formed semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (semi-IPNs) composed of the epoxy network and linear PEI.

The aim of this work was to improve the processability of triglycidyl-p-aminophenol (TGPAP) epoxy resin. To achieve this improvement, a diluent, the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol F (DGEBF or BPF), was added to TGPAP, and the blended epoxy was then cured with 4, 4′-diaminodiphenyl sulfones (DDS). A response surface methodology (RSM) was used, with the target response being to achieve a blended resin with a high glass transition temperature (Tg) and maximum pot life (or processing window, PW). Characterization through dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) and using a rheometer indicated that the optimum formulation was obtained at 55.6 wt.% of BPF and a stoichiometric ratio of 0.60. Both values were predicted to give Tg at 180 °C and a processing window of up to 136.1 min. The predicted values were verified, with the obtained Tg and processing window (PW) being 181.2 ± 0.8 °C and 140 min, respectively, which is close to the values predicted using the RSM.

Polypropylene/epoxy/synthetic graphite (PP/EP/SG) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE/EP/SG) composites were prepared by melt mixing followed by compression molding. The immiscibility of the polyolefins with epoxy was confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies showed that HDPE/EP blend exhibits inferior interfacial adhesion between the component polymers compared to PP/EP blend. Also, the effect of SG content on flexural properties, density, moldability, water absorption, and porosity of the PP/EP/SG and HDPE/EP/SG composites was investigated. For both PP/EP/SG and HDPE/EP/SG composites, flexural modulus, density, and porosity increased with increase in SG content. For PP/EP/SG composites, the water absorption decreased from 0.154% at 30 wt% SG to 0.072% at 70 wt% SG. Further increase in SG content to 80 wt% caused an increase in water absorption. On the other hand, water absorption for HDPE/EP/SG increased with SG content all through. At the same filler loadings, PP/EP/SG composites showed lower density and porosity and performed better in terms of flexural modulus and water absorption compared to HDPE/EP/SG composites.

In this paper, a novel carbon nanotube (CNT) polycaprolactone (PCL), epoxy, and glass fiber (GF) composite is reported. Here, the nanoreinforced composites show a flexural strength increase of around 30%, whereas the interlaminar shear strength increases by 10–15% in comparison to unenhanced samples. This occurs because the addition of the CNTs induces a better PCL/epoxy/GF interaction. Furthermore, the nanoparticles also give novel functionalities to the multiscale composite, such as strain and damage monitoring. Here, the electrical response of the tensile- and compressive-subjected faces was simultaneously measured during flexural tests as well as the transverse conductivity in interlaminar tests, showing an exceptional capability for damage detection. Moreover, it was observed that the electrical sensitivity increases with PCL content due to a higher efficiency of the dispersion process that promotes the creation of a more uniform electrical network.

Polylactic acid (PLA) was melt-blended with epoxy resin to study the effects of the reaction on the mechanical and thermal properties of the PLA. The addition of 0.5% (wt/wt) epoxy to PLA increased the maximum tensile strength of PLA (57.5 MPa) to 67 MPa, whereas the 20% epoxy improved the elongation at break to 12%, due to crosslinking caused by the epoxy reaction. The morphology of the PLA/epoxy blends showed epoxy nanoparticle dispersion in the PLA matrix that presented a smooth fracture surface with a high epoxy content. The glass transition temperature of PLA decreased with an increasing epoxy content owing to the partial miscibility between PLA and the epoxy resin. The Vicat softening temperature of the PLA was 59 °C and increased to 64.6 °C for 0.5% epoxy. NMR confirmed the reaction between the -COOH groups of PLA and the epoxy groups of the epoxy resin. This reaction, and partial miscibility of the PLA/epoxy blend, improved the interfacial crosslinking, morphology, thermal properties, and mechanical properties of the blends.

The difficult forming process and construction caused by high viscosity has been the main problem restricting the application of high-performance thermoplastic/epoxy blends. In this contribution, low viscous polyetherketone (PEK)/diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A epoxy resin (DGEBA) blends were prepared by mixing the ultrafine PEK powder and DGEBA monomer at ambient temperature. Rheological behaviour shows that complex viscosity of the undissolved blends containing 20 wt% PEK powder is two orders of magnitude lower than that of the dissolved one. Interestingly, diffusion and phase separation of PEK powder in the undissolved PEK/DGEBA/2-methylimidazole/dicyandiamide (M-DICY) blends are affected by the curing processes. Phase-inverted morphology was observed after curing at 120°C/1h + 160°C/0.5 h for the undissolved 20 wt% PEK/DGEBA/M-DICY blends which also exhibited outstanding tensile strength and lap shear strength both at 298 and 77 K. We believe this work should provide a new insight into the preparation of advanced thermoplastic/epoxy blends.

Polycaprolactone (PCL) is being researched as a self-healing agent blended with epoxy resins by several reasons: low melting point, differential expansive bleeding (DBE) of PCL, and reaction induced phase separation (RIPS) of PCL/epoxy blends. In this work, PCL/epoxy blends were prepared with different PCL ratios and two different epoxy networks, cured with aliphatic and aromatic amine hardeners. The curing kinetic affects to the blend morphology, varying its critical composition. The self-healing behavior is strongly affected by the blend morphology, reaching the maximum efficiency for co-continuous phases. Blends with dispersed PCL phase into epoxy matrix can also show high self-healing efficiency because of the low PCL domains that act as reservoir of self-healing agent. In this last case, it was confirmed that the most efficient self-healable blends are one whose area occupied by PCL phase is the largest. These blends remain the good thermal and mechanical behavior of epoxy matrix, in contrast to the worsened properties of blends with bicontinuous morphology. In this work, the self-healing mechanism of blends is studied in depth by scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore, the influence of the geometry of the initial surface damage is also evaluated, affecting to the measurement of self-healing efficiency.
