Gabriel García Márquez offers rich accounts of the Colombian Caribbean’s experience with the historical forces of progress that test traditional societies and their predominant values and attitudes. Colombian historiography identifies various broad stages of secular change in the Caribbean since independence: (1) the emergence of enclave economies, (2) the arrival of people fleeing violence, (3) the foundation of new settlements in the hinterland, (4) the rapid industrialization of Barranquilla, and (5) the region’s full integration into the national project. García Márquez’s fictional towns and generations exist in phases 1–4, which roughly correspond with one hundred years of postindependence history. His Caribbean, like the real one, follows a messy path to modernity where traditional values are tested. It has fuzzy political, cultural, and economic borders and is governed by overlapping elites who, unintentionally, leave vacuums of power for the reproduction of morally loose, intercultural, and miscegenated societies. These societies see the dominant civilization and are familiar with its technologies and social projects. News of progress comes to them in leaf storms, books of knowledge brought by gypsies, trains arriving out of nowhere, or the speeches of shady politicians. This article argues that such broad changes shape values and attitudes as people adapt to new patterns of organization. In the standard modernization account, traditional values (i.e., survival/family orientation) give way to secular values (i.e., self-expression/trust in anonymous institutions). But this cultural transition is neither smooth nor complete. Rather, traditional and secular values coexist in constant tension, and García Márquez shows how.

(1) Gamers are a new social phenomenon on YouTube whose success is based on their humour and social identity. The aim of this research is to deepen the understanding of the behaviour of the 100 gamers with the largest numbers of fans worldwide by studying their channels on YouTube; (2) Methods: This is a longitudinal research study from 20 August 2019 to 20 August 2020. The methodology consists of three techniques: social media analysis, opinion mining or sentiment analysis, and qualitative semantic analysis; (3) Results: The results of regression and KPI analysis confirm that the most popular contents have high levels of humour, positive polarity, irony, and subjectivity. In addition, the jargon of the digital community is used, focusing on group identification; (4) Conclusions: We conclude that teenagers use YouTube to search content that is cheerful, fun, and with high doses of humor and irony, in which gamers narrate their own vision of reality. Understanding these characteristics makes it possible to adapt educational channels to the interests of the adolescent community. At the same time, it allows us to understand how group identity is constructed in the virtual community, being able to establish lines of intervention from the educational and family orientation.

PurposeThis article seeks to understand the role of prosocial behaviour and moral obligation in family business to explain the indirect relationship between family business orientation and citizenship behaviour.Design/methodology/approachThis study proposes a model to examine the role of moral obligation and prosocial behaviour in such a relationship to understand a link between family orientation and organisational citizenship behaviour. The authors provide empirical evidence to test the hypothesis by conducting an online survey of family business behaviour in the Indonesia context.FindingsThe family business orientation has a significant impact on citizenship behaviour, while prosocial behaviour and moral obligation offer an additional contribution. The results suggest that family business performance demonstrates how a family that owns the business sets the social purposes from various performance alternatives beyond profit, such as family orientation, prosocial behaviour, moral obligation and organisational citizenship behaviour.Originality/valueThis study extends the agency and stewardship theory by examining how family business performance becomes different from other firm performance where the mainstream of economic theory argues that the business attempts to maximise profit for the stakeholders. The findings suggest that incorporating the theory of social practice in family business enhances the concept of prosocial behaviour in family business value.

ABSTRACT Schizencephaly is an extremely rare developmental birth defect or malformation characterized by abnormal clefts in the cerebral hemispheres of the brain, extending from the cortex to the ventricles, which may be unilateral or bilateral. This case report describes the general characteristics of a psychological home care program, reporting the main theoretical and technical elements in a 12-years-old case of type II Schizencephaly. The aims of the psychological home treatment were acceptance of the new treatment reality, a reduction in aggression and anxiety, and psychological support for the patient and family. In the psychological home care, patient’s awareness of illness was developed, along with family orientation, psychoeducation, relaxation techniques, and cognitive distraction. It can be observed that a significant improvement in the affective and emotional state was achieved within the patient’s clinical framework.

Indigenous personality research often remains limited to its cultural context of origin. Previous cross-cultural examinations of indigenous models have typically focused on East–West comparisons and have paid scant attention to the predictive validity of indigenous models in new contexts. The present study addresses the replicability of the South African Personality Inventory (SAPI) and its predictive validity for family orientation and well-being in New Zealand European ( n = 428) and Māori students ( n = 226). The structure of the SAPI in New Zealand was equivalent to the structure identified in South Africa and had metric invariance between the two New Zealand groups. The SAPI social-relational scales explained additional variance above neuroticism, extraversion, conscientiousness, and openness in family orientation, but not in well-being. Mediation path analyses suggested that personality played a similar role for family orientation and well-being in the two groups when assessed by the SAPI, although group differences were suggested when using the Big Five Inventory. Our findings indicate that indigenously derived models, developed with the aim to represent culturally salient concepts, can be relevant well beyond their culture of origin and offer an enriched understanding of personality’s role for important outcomes across cultures.

Abstract This paper explores the shared cultural dimensions between Filipinos and Koreans through cross-cultural comparison. Filipinos identified and assessed potential cultural similarities and differences with Koreans and vice versa. A survey was designed and was used to dimensionalise cultural fit in terms of general values and practices integrated in their consumption behaviours. The study involved Filipinos who have substantial exposure and experience with Korea and Koreans who are living in the Philippines. Using a proposed constructed framework on comparative relativism or the idea of “comparisons of comparisons,” findings suggest that power distance and family orientation dimensions are shared by both cultures. In addition, the two cultures share consumer values and practices, such as emotional consumption, reference to social influences, and epistemic consumption (adherence to functionality). Implications are positioned on the practical and policy-oriented contextual motivations as well as potential alternatives and updates on existing cultural dimensions and intelligence models through the paradigm of comparative relativism.

The current study examined the role of family orientations on the achievement motivations (i.e., achievement goal orientations and intrinsic motivation) of high school youths of different generational status (i.e., from immigrant or non-immigrant families) when their perception of their parents’ goals and classroom goal structures were tested simultaneously as predictors. A total of 331 high school students (ninth grade; ages 13–16, with 96% of the students in the ages of 14 or 15; 141 boys and 187 girls) from one high school in the United States participated in the study, completing a series of assessments with regard to their math classes. The findings show the complex role of the family contexts (parent goals and family orientations) on the adaptive mastery goals for children of immigrant families, going beyond previous studies that reported the relationships between family orientation and performance-approach or less adaptive performance-avoidance goals. This study still found that students’ family orientations strongly predicted their desire to win over their peers with certain levels of internal pressure in order to meet their parents’ expectations, aligned with previous literature. Through examining a context beyond the classroom context, studies should continue to examine the larger family and cultural context in understanding students with diverse backgrounds.

FAMILY ORIENTATION AND ITS IMPACT ON ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDER WITH HYPERACTIVITY IN CHILDREN AND GIRLS ABSTRACT This research allowed me to identify that hyperactivity is a syndrome that can be detected in time when a diagnosis and treatment is made to the person who suffers it. Human beings are part of a large family system and the actions taken by a member of this family can affect positively or negatively. How does family orientation affect attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children? The objective of this research is to guide parents and teachers with specific guidelines to solve the problems presented. The material that was applied during the investigation was observation cards, interviews and surveys. The method I used corresponds to the qualitative, inductive - deductive method. The results will allow us to show that this type of behavior affects the integral development of the child. A report was prepared to be issued to the Department of Student Counseling, so that they are the ones who proceed to take the pertinent measures together with the legal representatives or parents. It is necessary that there be an early detection and an effective intervention, the problematic of the hyperactive child could be relatively controllable. Possibly the delay in the process of evaluation, diagnosis and treatment favors a negative evolution of the disorder that could include the following situations: permanent hyperactivity, low IQ, alterations of associated behaviors, lack of mental balance of parents and school and family relationships deficient. KEYWORDS: Disorder; family; hyperactivity; deficit.
