Mulberry plants belonging to the Moraceae family have been grown for the purpose of being the nutrient source for silk worm and raw materials for the preparation of jams, marmalades, vinegars, juices, wines, and cosmetics. Morus nigra L. (black mulberry) is native to Southwestern Asia, and it has been used as a traditional herbal medicine for animals and humans. In this article, recent research progress on various biological and pharmacological properties of extracts, fractions, and isolated active constituents from different parts of M. nigra are reviewed. M. nigra exhibited a wide-spectrum of biological and pharmacological therapeutic effects including antinociceptive, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti-melanogenic, antidiabetic, anti-obesity, anti-hyperlipidemic, and anticancer activities. M. nigra also showed protective effects against various human organs and systems, mainly based on its antioxidant capacity. These findings strongly suggest that M. nigra can be used as a promising nutraceutical resource to control and prevent various chronic diseases.

BaF2 nanorods were synthesized by hydrothermal microemulsion method using sodium fluoride (NaF) and barium chloride (BaCl2) as the raw materials. The as-prepared products were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that the products were composed of BaF2 nanorods with diameters of 18-62 nm and lengths up to 1μm. A directed aggregation growth process mediated by the microemulsion droplet building blocks is proposed for the formation of BaF2 nanorods. Further work is in progress to evaluate the possibility of synthesizing other fluoride 1D nanostructures using a similar method.


The review article presents the results of the analysis of literature data on the study of the Eleutherococcus senticosus resources in the Far East. It includes information on the results of its introduction and cultivation as well as the study of the content of biologically active substances in relation to different growth conditions. The article describes the differences in pharmacopoeial methods for assessing the quality of raw materials for Eleutherococcus senticosus in Russia and abroad.

Background: Czech beers are unique because they are brewed using specific technology at a particular latitude and for being entirely produced in the area of the Czech Republic. The purpose of this work is the evaluation of toxicological effects of a variety of freeze-dried Czech beers, their raw materials (malts, hops and yeast) and processed-beer (wort, hopped wort and young beer). Methods: In vivo assays to evaluate the safety and protective effects in the Drosophila melanogaster eukaryotic system, and the in vitro evaluations of chemopreventive and DNA damage activity using the HL-60 tumour human cell line were carried out. Results: The safe effects for all the analysed substances and general protective effects against H2O2 were shown both at the individual and genomic level in the Drosophila animal model, with some exceptions. Moreover, all the substances were able to inhibit the tumour cell growth and to induce DNA damage in the HL-60 cells at different levels (proapoptotic, single/double strands breaks and methylation status). Conclusions: The promising effects shown by freeze-dried Czech beers due to their safety, protection against a toxin, chemopreventive potential and the induction of DNA damage in tumour cells, allow the proposition of Czech beer as a beverage with nutraceutic potential.

Several metals including barium (Ba) known as environmental pollutants provoke deleterious effects on human health. The present work pertains to the potential ability of selenium (Se) and/or vitamin C, used as nutritional supplements, to alleviate the toxic effects induced by barium chloride (BaCl2) in the heart of adult rats. Animals were randomly divided into seven groups of six each: group 1, serving as negative controls, received distilled water; group 2 received in their drinking water BaCl2 (67 ppm); group 3 received both Ba and Se (sodium selenite 0.5 mg kg−1 of diet); group 4 received both Ba and vitamin C (200 mg kg−1 bodyweight) via force feeding; group 5 received Ba, Se, and vitamin C; and groups 6 and 7, serving as positive controls, received either Se or vitamin C for 21 days. The exposure of rats to BaCl2 caused cardiotoxicity as monitored by an increase in malondialdehyde, hydrogen peroxide, and advanced oxidation protein product levels, a decrease in Na+-K+ adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase), Mg2+ ATPase, and acetylcholinesterase activities and in antioxidant defense system (catalase, glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione, and nonprotein thiols). Plasma lactate dehydrogenase and creatine kinase activities, total cholesterol, triglyceride, and low-density lipoprotein–cholesterol levels increased, while high-density lipoprotein–cholesterol level decreased. Coadministration of Se and/or vitamin C restored the parameters indicated above to near control values. The histopathological findings confirmed the biochemical results. Se and vitamin C may be a promising therapeutic strategy for Ba-induced heart injury.

For ceramic industry, efflorescence is undesirable and cannot be completely eliminated from the finished products. The efflorescence is caused by soluble salts in the raw material and mostly appears as white deposit at the product’s surface. In this research, the removal of sulfate in the raw materials was studied. In addition, the sulfate ions were immobilized by forming a water-insoluble compound. The sulfate ions in the raw materials and fired products were extracted by distilled water, and the concentration was determined by using a UV-visible spectroscopy following the ASTM C1580-09 standard. Three sources of the raw materials from Tambon Suan Phung, Ratchaburi, Tambon Mae Win and Mae Ta, Chiang Mai, were analyzed for sulfate concentrations. The clay from Tambon Suan Phung, Ratchaburi which had the highest sulfate concentration was selected for further study on the effect of inhibitor and firing temperature on efflorescence inhibition. To reduce solubility of the sulfate, three kinds of inhibitor, i.e. barium chloride, barium carbonate and barium hydroxide, were added into the raw material at various concentrations, i.e. 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 wt% and homogeneously mixed by ball milling followed by the addition of distilled water to prepare the clay slip. The clay products were mold casted to 1 x 1 x 3 inch3 in size. Then, they were fired at 800, 900 and 1000 °C. It has been revealed that the addition of barium carbonate at 2 wt%, which is the highest amount employed in this study, and firing temperature of 900 °C resulted in least sulfate leaching due to the formation of water-insoluble barium sulfate. To perform a field test, the fired samples with and without the addition of barium carbonate were immersed in water for 4 months. The efflorescence was observed on the sample without barium carbonate within the 1st month. In contrast, with the addition of barium carbonate, no efflorescence was observed after testing for 4 months.

Dicalcium silicate (Ca2SiO4) is a major component of Portland cement. It has also been investigated as a potential transformation toughener alternative to zirconia. It has five polymorphs: α, α'H, α'L, β and γ. Of interest is the β-to-γ transformation on cooling at about 490°C. This transformation, accompanied by a 12% volume increase and a 4.6° unit cell shape change, is analogous to the tetragonal-to-monoclinic transformation in zirconia. Due to the processing methods used, previous studies into the particle size effect were limited by a wide range of particle size distribution. In an attempt to obtain a more uniform size, a fast quench rate involving a laser-melting/roller-quenching technique was investigated.The laser-melting/roller-quenching experiment used precompacted bars of stoichiometric γ-Ca2SiO4 powder, which were synthesized from AR grade CaCO3 and SiO2xH2O. The raw materials were mixed by conventional ceramic processing techniques, and sintered at 1450°C. The dusted γ-Ca2SiO4 powder was uniaxially pressed into 0.4 cm x 0.4 cm x 4 cm bars under 34 MPa and cold isostatically pressed under 172 MPa. The γ-Ca2SiO4 bars were melted by a 10 KW-CO2 laser.

Barium hexaferrite (BaFe12O19) is a promising candidate for high density magnetic recording media due to its superior magnetic properties. For particulate recording media, nano-sized single crystalline powders with a narrow size distribution are a primary application requirement. The glass-crystallization method is preferred because of the controllability of crystallization kinetics, hence, particle size and size distribution. A disadvantage of this method is the need to melt raw materials at high temperatures with non-reactive crucibles, e.g. platinum. However, in this work, we have shown that crystal growth of barium hexaferrite occurred during low temperature heat treatment of raw batches.
