The article deals with the modelling of demand for the food group of milk and milk products and the food group of meat, meat products, eggs and fish using the Marshallian demand functions for the individual income quartils of Slovak households. The criterium for the foodstuff groups selection is their position in the Healthy Eating Pyramid which is one of the recommended optimal food basket forms. We suppose that the significant income differentiation of households will manifest as different consumer behaviour in the food market. The analysis confirms this hypothesis.

Waiting is a pervasive feature of organisational life and, as such, is likely to be important for a range of individual and organisational outcomes. Although extant research has shed light on the waiting experiences of diverse groups such as those suffering from illness, waiting in detention centres or queuing, there have been no previous attempts to theorise waiting specifically from the perspective of the employee. To address this gap, we draw on theories of temporality and waiting in fields such as consumer behaviour as well as the wider social sciences to develop the notion of ‘situated waiting’ which uncovers the complexity of the lived experience of waiting from the perspective of the employee. This experience is associated with factors at the level of the individual, the wait itself, and the broader waiting context. We outline the implications for future research on this hitherto hidden domain of the employee experience.

In view of the 'sunsetting' of restrictive regulations, which for years have obstructed comprehensive midwifery practice in Victoria, it is timely for the nature of midwifery care in a primary health care setting to be explicated. A best practice framework is employed to examine the pre-conditions and key process factors which facilitate and potentiate quality of midwifery care in the North Richmond Community Health Centre's shared care maternity program. The process of care is considered in detail, while outcomes and client perceptions are outlined. The nature of safe midwifery practice at the individual client/practitioner level�the micro dimension of care�is explored in the context of broader societal issues which directly and indirectly affect health status and outcomes for clients�the macro dimension. This discussion seeks not only to delineate best practice but also to challenge accepted notions of what constitutes safe care.

Abstract A langrangian-based phenomenological model, following the evolution of the individual droplets nucleating at random positions, is applied to the simulation and optimization of hybrid, mixed hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces. The proposed mathematical model was originally developed to simulate droplets pattern evolution in the framework of in-flight icing problems and takes into account the surface tension effects (via the advancing and receding contact angle values), the external force balance on the single droplets, as well as the both the condensing and coalescence process. Here, the model is extended to the case of an arbitrary curved substrate surface and a parametric analysis of different cases is carried out, looking for the parameters that help to identify the optimal design for a given set of wettability properties, nucleation site density and wet surface condensation rates. A discussion on the sensitivity of the solutions with respect to the expected high uncertainties on the estimate of some of these parameters in actual practical problems is also presented, in order to assess the effectiveness of the simulation as a design tool. The analysis is carried out for condensation enhancement on both plane surfaces and mini or micro tubes. Comparison with experimental, open literature data ensure the reliability of the approach for both geometries.

The author argues that traditional market research techniques such as consumer 'intention to buy' surveys fail to predict consumer behaviour because the underlying assumptions that man is rational, aware of his wants and preferences, and consistent in his buying behaviour, are invalid. He suggests that many economic terms such as 'utility' and 'rationalization' have little practical value; that economic theory ignores a vital element in consumer behaviour - mass communication and the art of persuasion. In searching for a more meaningful approach, the author suggests that many new markets come about as a result of social and environmental change and that, in such cases, the historic process of extrapolating past trends into the future serves little purpose. Rather, the marketer should concentrate on developing a keen understanding of social movements which affect the firm - such as consumerism. Abstract Variation of dimensions within assemblies can unexpectedly displace parts from their intended location and therefore degrade the assembly’s performance. This paper presents a design tool based on the principles of kinematics to analyze nonlinear tolerance stackup, increase the reliability of the assembly without decreasing tolerances and where necessary, judiciously allocate tolerances such that the critical parts fit relative to each other with the specified precision. Through an analytical sensitivity analysis, the procedure outlined in this paper alters the orientations of the parts to yield an assembly with the highest positional reliability. If the desired level of reliability is not met by the minimum sensitivity approach, a tolerance allocation method incorporating the above sensitivity analysis and the cost of manufacturing each dimension as a function of tolerance is applied. In addition, this approach allows the individual tolerances within the assembly to assume any distribution. The method shown by this paper allows the design engineer to consider manufacturing effects and provides an analytical basis to evaluate design function.

This paper presents an analysis of optimization for multifunctional nanocomposites. A carbon nanotubeepoxy composite is optimized for maximum resistance change and minimum strain energy. Analysis uses a finite element method and includes the coupled physics of mechanics, electrostatics, and piezoresistivity. The problem is solved first for minimum strain energy, then two resistance maximization problems are solved. For all optimization, sensitivities are obtained analytically. After solving the individual problems a weighted sum approach is used in the multi-objective optimization of both minimizing the strain energy and maximizing the resistance change. Comments are made as to the effect of the topology optimization method as a design tool, on the shape of the optimized cross sections, and on the possible extensions on using the coupled physics topology optimization algorithm.

The developed world for decades has been trying to achieve waste management that meets the requirements of sustainable production. It is very important to understand, analyse and predict the individual consumer behaviour, motivations, values and attitudes towards environmental consciousness. Consumers’ environmental awareness covers positive attitudes towards the environment supported by values and beliefs. The conclusion of the research is that in the area of environmental awareness Hungary is at the beginning of a long process and it cannot be predicted when will it reach the level of developed countries. A positive trend is that today’s young people, who represent the next generation, show more interest towards environmental awareness.

Food waste is an important sustainability issue that needs to be addressed. Consumer behaviour is one of the biggest sources of food waste in developed countries. To successfully reduce consumer-related food waste, it is necessary to have a clear understanding of its major root causes at the level of the individual. The present manuscript presents the results of an exploratory on-line survey that was made available through Google Drive and conducted among a representative sample of 1058 Italian individuals. The information contained in the questionnaire related to the characteristics of the individual respondents, their attitudes to expenditure and food, and their opinions of measures to reduce or prevent food waste. Data analysis was conducted in three phases. The first phase allowed for the identification, with the application of descriptive statistics, of the socio-demographic characteristics of the respondents and why, what, and how much they wasted. In the second phase, linear regression analysis and causal maps were used to both measure the statistical dependence between variables and to identify the main root causes of food waste in the phase of individual consumption. As expected, the perceived quantity of food waste that was declared by respondents was very low. Among the major root causes identified, the socio-demographic characteristics of consumers, types of food shopping purchases, and consumer behaviour played a key role. A causal map was drawn, which offers an immediate vision of the major root causes and can be a useful tool for policymakers who intend to introduce measures to combat food waste. Finally, participants’ responses showed that the main initiatives needed to eliminate waste are the separate collection and dissemination of more information on the impact that waste has on the environment. For these reasons, information and education policies are crucial for changing consumer lifestyles and raising awareness of the value of food.
