We did sorts of shear strength tests in different moisture content conditions with amount of disturbed soil which was collected from the swelling soft rock in the north of xianfeng town open-cast coal. Furthermore, we analyzed the physical relationships between moisture content of the rock-soil mass and shear strength under different soaking time or different moisture content conditions. Finally, we find the shear strength of rock-soil mass drops along with the saturated degree of test specimen doubled and re-doubled. We get a conclusion that soaking of the rock-soil mass has a strong influence on the strength of rock-soil mass. The soaking of groundwater and surface water could soft the rock-soil mass, which plays an important role in controlling the stability of side slope, also in continuing slip deformation.

The stability of soil slope under seepage is calculated and analyzed by using finite element method based on the technique of shear strength reduction. When the condition of seepage or not is considered respectively, the critical failure state of slopes and corresponding safety coefficients can be determined by the numerical analysis and calculation. Besides, through analyzing and comparing the calculation results, it shows that seepage has a negative impact on slope stability.

The stability of steel-slag road materials remains a critical issue in their utilization as an aggregate base course. In this pursuit, the present study was envisaged to investigate the effects of fly ash on the mechanical properties and expansion behavior of cement-fly-ash-stabilized steel slag. Strength tests and expansion tests of the cement-fly-ash-stabilized steel slag with varying additions of fly ash were carried out. The results indicate that the cement-fly-ash-stabilized steel slag exhibited good mechanical properties. The expansion rate and the number of bulges of the stabilized material reduced with an increase in the addition. When the addition of fly ash was 30–60%, the stabilized material was not damaged due to expansion. Furthermore, the results of X-CT, XRD and SEM-EDS show that fly ash reacted with the expansive component of the steel slag. In addition, the macro structure of the stabilized material was found to be changed by an increase in the concentration of the fly ash, in order to improve the volumetric stability. Our study shows that the cement-fly-ash-stabilized steel slag exhibits good mechanical properties and volumetric stability with reasonable additions of fly ash.

AbstractHydrating high-alumina cement will react with calcium carbonate to form the complex mineral calcium carboaluminate hydrate, 3CaO.Al2O3.CaCO3.12H2O. This mineral is reported to be capable of providing strength in concrete and so may provide an alternative to the minerals normally found in the hydration of high-alumina cement, which may under certain conditions convert to other minerals with a loss in strength. Some doubt has been cast on the stability of calcium carboaluminate hydrate and it has been found that in hydrated high-alumina cement, calcium carboaluminate hydrate decomposes at temperatures in excess of 60°C. Cube compressive strength tests on high-alumina cement and high-alumina cement-calcium carbonate pastes have shown that the latter have a lower strength than pastes made with high-alumina cement alone. When cured at 50°C the high-alumina cement-calcium carbonate pastes show a loss in strength with curing time. Cements made with the high-alumina cement-calcium carbonate mixture always have a lower strength than those made with high-alumina cement alone and so no advantage is gained from their use.

Active-layer detachment slides are locally common on Fosheim Peninsula, Ellesmere Island, where permafrost is continuous, the active layer is 0.5-0.75 m thick, and summer temperatures are unusually high in comparison with much of the Canadian High Arctic. In this paper we report pore-water pressures at the base of the active layer, recorded in situ on two slopes in late July and early August 1995. These data form the basis for slope stability analyses based on effective stress conditions. During fieldwork, the factor of safety within an old detachment slide on a slope at Hot Weather Creek was slightly greater than unity. At "Big Slide Creek," on a slope showing no evidence of earlier detachment failures, the factor of safety was less than unity on a steep basal slope section but greater than unity elsewhere. In the upper slope, pore-water pressures were only just subcritical. Sensitivity analyses demonstrate that the stability of the shallow active layer is strongly influenced by changes in soil shear strength. Possible mechanisms for reduction in shear strength through time include weathering of soils and gradual increases in basal active layer ice content. However, we suggest here that soil shearing during annual gelifluction movements is most likely to progressively reduce shear strengths at the base of the active layer from peak values to close to residual, facilitating the triggering of active-layer detachment failures.Key words: detachment slides, Ellesmere Island, pore-water pressures, gelifluction.

In excavations below groundwater level, instability of the base may result from the inflow of water into the excavation. The most important factors influencing the stability are the ground water and detailed soil conditions at the site.Construction problems encountered in excavations in clay strata, underlain by pervious water bearing layers, are described. The remedial measures adopted in each case are also discussed. From a study of the observations made in the case records, it is suggested that excavation in intact clays may be carried out to depths exceeding that limited by the ratio of t/h = 0.5, where t is the distance from the bottom of the excavation to the top of the water bearing stratum, and h is the water head at the top of the water bearing stratum, provided that the clay is not disturbed during construction so that the shear strength of the clay is preserved.

Abstract In order to study the influence of chemical solution on the stability of loess embankment in seasonally frozen regions, the compression index, shear strength index and embankment safety factor of compacted loess fillings that were treated by different concentrations of chemical solution were analyzed through laboratory test and slope stability analysis program. The experimental results showed that the collapsible coefficients of remolded loess treated by different chemical solution will all increase which comparing the distilled water, and then will change again after freezing-thawing cycles (FTCs). The compression index of undisturbed loess will show regularity with the increase of chemical solution concentration. The shear strength of remolded loess also changed under the chemical solution and FTCs. Besides, simulation of the strength parameters by limit equilibrium methods showed that the safety factor of loess embankment with treatment of solution was significantly higher than that of untreated one, and the FTC would cause a further deterioration. The embankment stability improved after treated by chemical solution without considering seepage of rainwater. These results would provide a novel method to the problem of embankment stability related to environmental condition changes.

As one of the major contributors to the early failures of steel bridge deck pavements, the bonding between steel and asphalt overlay has long been a troublesome issue. In this paper, a novel composite bonding structure was introduced consisting of epoxy resin micaceous iron oxide (EMIO) primer, solvent-free epoxy resin waterproof layer, and ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) hot melt pellets. A series of strength tests were performed to study its mechanical properties, including pull-off strength tests, dumbbell tensile tests, lap shear tests, direct tension tests, and 45°-inclined shear tests. The results suggested that the bonding structure exhibited fair bonding strength, tensile strength, and shear strength. Anisotropic behaviour was also observed at high temperatures. For epoxy resin waterproof layer, the loss of bonding strength, tensile strength, and shear strength at 60°C was 70%, 35%, and 39%, respectively. Subsequent pavement performance-oriented tests included five-point bending tests and accelerated wheel tracking tests. The impacts of bonding on fatigue resistance and rutting propagation were studied. It was found that the proposed bonding structure could provide a durable and well-bonded interface and was thus beneficial to prolong the fatigue lives of asphalt overlay. The choice of bonding materials was found irrelevant to the ultimate rutting depth of pavements. But the bonding combination of epoxy resin waterproof and EVA pellets could delay the early-stage rutting propagation.

To identify the water softening mechanisms that caused landslides in Panzhihua Airport, China, property and saturation tests of the mudstones extracted from a representative landslide were proposed. In this paper, water saturation tests were carried out on samples of carbonaceous mudstone collected from the east side of the No. 12 landslide at the airport. A number of different analytical techniques and mechanical tests were used to determine changes in chemical composition, mineral assemblages, and mudstone structural characteristics, including shear strength, after the mudstone had been softened. Three kinds of changes caused by water and three mudstone softening stages are proposed. The results show that the water has a significant influence on the properties of the mudstone, so the stability of the mudstone in the watery period is a big threat to the upper structure. A model for water immersion mudstone strength softening is developed. The model incorporates a permeability coefficient, the hydraulic gradient, and time; the model can be used to determine the mudstone’s shear strength and internal friction angle. This study provides a reference for the study of rock softened by water immersion.
