Construction industry is an important part of the economy in many countries and often seen as a driver of economic growth especially in developing countries. As construction industry is less mechanized and more labor intensive, construction workers are backbone of this industry. So the major consideration is ensuring workers safety during construction. This paper is aimed to examine the current safety status, identify the main causes for not practicing safety measures which termed as challenges of construction safety, identify the benefits of considering safety measures, effects for not practicing safety measures and suggestions to overcome the challenges in the construction sites in Bangladesh. The study was conducted in three stages. Firstly the existing rules and regulations of construction safety were studied. Secondly physical survey was conducted among the ongoing construction sites. Thirdly 20 causes and 14 effects for not practicing safety measures that influence the safety performance in construction sites, 16 benefits for practicing safety measures were identified from literature review and ranked them based on Factor Index (FI) by conducting questionnaire survey. According to the physical survey data, it was obvious that workers were working without PPE and fall protective system. From the data analysis, the main causes for not practicing safety rules and measures are lack of enforcement of safety rules and regulations, lack of safety awareness among the construction stakeholder and lack of safety training respectively. The main benefits for practicing safety measures and rules are reduced administrative costs, the potential for reduced insurance and liability costs and improving safety is usually a competitive advantage, because of reduced costs respectively. The main effects for not practicing safety measures and rules are payment for settlement of injury/death claims, negative impact on reputation of firms and increase in project cost respectively. Finally significant suggestions to overcome the challenges were identified from the stakeholder of this industry. The survey results may help the authorities to increase the awareness of practicing safety measures and enforce the construction safety rules in the next project approach.

Due to the great negative impact, the construction industry needs to undergo a paradigm shift from traditional construction to sustainable construction. To reach the goal of sustainable development, the construction industry needs to intensify its efforts to move to a knowledge intensive mode. Based on the analysis of e-Cognos and the concept of ontology, this paper proposes that e-Cognos ontology can be applied in the development of sustainable construction process ontology, which is a key part of knowledge management system (KMS). Following this, the application process of ontology-based KMS is analyzed using IDEF0 modeling method. Finally, this paper analyzes interorganizational collaboration model in sustainable project.

The construction industry has been known as the most fatal industries worldwide. Accident affects varies parties involving direct and indirect costs to the contractor and clients as well. The construction safety measures in the current practice often begin during the construction phase rather than at the earliest stages possible. Design for Construction Safety (DfCS) is a process to reduce the hazards and risks during construction by focussing on design decision at the design phase. This concept implementation is new and has yet to be adapted worldwide. With every new culture comes with a set of list to overcome. The top barriers stated by past researchers are lack of knowledge and education followed by increased of liability and the nature of the industry. The initial step to be taken is to adapt this concept in the universities and college level during the designers’ formal education. By mastering this subject, the designers will become more confidence with new found skills while their attitudes towards safety will have a huge impact on workforce safety by eliminating hazards on site.

The growing context of globalization permanently increases pressure on the construction companies to improve their performances in order to resist to the constraints of competitiveness in the international market. It has become ineluctable to look for introducing a new alternative capable of bringing creative improvement to the traditional production system. This paper will relate mainly to the most relevant management techniques in the construction industry, and more specifically, the lean construction concept. Initially, we will determine the main characteristics of the construction industry compared to the manufacturing industry according to three levels: on-site production, one of a kind projects, and complexity. Subsequently, we will focus our attention on the main sources of waste in the construction industry. Finally, a rigorous comparative study will be carried out to show the contribution of the lean construction tools in the promotion of traditional construction especially at the level of the following factors: Creating value and eliminating waste; Planning and mutual coordination; Site organization. Lean construction as Last Planner System (LPS), Value Stream Mapping (VSM), Just-in-Time philosophy, Visual management (VM) and 5S have shown a great ability to improve the traditional production system through waste reduction, encouraging people involvement, ensuring a pull flow production, and promotion of a continuous improvement philosophy.

Evidence shows that there are many work-related accidents and injuries happening in construction projects and governments have taken a series of administrative measures to reduce casualties in recent years. However, traditional approaches have reached a bottleneck due to ignoring market forces, and thus new measures should be conducted. This study develops a perspective of safety performance (SP) for construction projects in China and puts forward a conception of the safety information system by using several brainstorming sessions to strengthen the safety supervision of participants in the construction industry. This system provides rating information to the public, and bad performance contractors enter into a blacklist which will influence their economic activities. Considering the limited rationality of government and various contractors, this paper builds a reasonable evolutionary game model to verify the feasibility of the safety information system. The analysis results show that there is not a single set of evolutionarily stable strategies (ESSs), as different situations may lead to different ESSs. The efficiency of applying the safety information system (the blacklist) in the construction industry can be proved by reducing the government’s safety supervision cost and by enhancing construction safety at the same time.

Green building is the inevitable trend of the development of the construction industry. One of the key links to realize green building is green construction management. The poor economy of traditional construction hinders the smooth promotion of green construction in the construction industry. This paper mainly from the green building and green construction two concepts of related content research. Through the analysis and discussion of the main principles of project cost management in green construction, this paper briefly expounds some implementation measures of project cost management in green construction. This paper deeply discusses the current situation of green construction project cost management, and puts forward relevant improvement countermeasures. The experimental results show that: construction enterprises should make innovative thinking on construction management and bring green construction into project management. This can provide impetus for the sustainable development of the construction industry.

Employees health, safety and their welfare is one of the important measures in order to maintain the good industrial relations and also improve the commitment of the employees towards the organization. Therefore, the purpose of the present research article is to analyze the various health, safety and welfare measures provided by the employer and their impact on commitment of employees towards organization with respect to construction industry in Chennai. The study is conducted with a sample size of 160 (construction employees) and analysis is done both descriptively and inferentially.The statistical tools like Independent Sample t test, Correlation and Multiple Regression are applied for testing of hypotheses.Based on the analysis, the study revealed that out of three measures, Safety Measures have significant impact on commitment of employees towards organization and there is a significant difference in the perception of employees on thehealth, safety and welfare measures provided by the organizations in the construction industry in Chennai. The study suggests the management of construction companies should take proactive steps to improve the working conditions as well as health, safety and welfare aspects of the employees. This would not only improve the commitment of employees towards the organization but also increase the overall performance of the organization.


The construction industry plays a prominent part in the progress of a country socially and economically. Nowadays construction industry has grown profit driven and the management focuses more on completing the projects on time neglecting safety of the workers. Construction works involving intricate works leading to accidents or injuries resulting in loss of life and body parts are rampant. So a proper safety management system is required to avoid accidents and improve safety at construction sites. Factors affecting safety at construction workplaces were identified and was surveyed through a quantitative questionnaire and analysed to form a basis for the total construction safety management model. The Total Construction Safety Management (TCSM) based on the PDCA modelling is proposed to improve safety at construction sites. This model can act as a guide to the present organizations and helps them to implement safety in quicker manner at construction site.

Off-site construction (OSC) methods have been widely adopted in the construction industry around the world. However, in a lot of developing countries, the application of OSC still lags behind. Although a number of research efforts have focused on identifying the OSC barriers, they are limited to qualitative descriptions, which lacks the understanding of the interrelationships among the barriers. To address this gap, this paper proposed a methodology for identifying the OSC barriers and their cause-effect relationships. The proposed methodology is composed of three phases: (1) a comprehensive literature review and in-depth interview with the OSC industry experts, (2) questionnaire survey and focus group discussion, and (3) grey DEMATEL analysis. The proposed methodology was applied in the context of China’s construction industry. The results of the grey DEMATEL analysis provided the cause-effect relationships of the 35 identified OSC barriers, which indicated six important aspects be taken into deeper consideration, such as governmental regulations and incentives, OSC practices and experiences, as well as traditional construction method transformation. The outcomes of this study will support policymakers and OSC participants to identify the influencing OSC barriers and their interrelationships, as well as propose appropriate strategies for overcoming the barriers and broadening the OSC application.
