AbstractThis study investigated the impact of the equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) combined with heat treatments on the microstructure and mechanical properties of AlSi10Mg alloys fabricated via selective laser melting (SLM) and gravity casting. Special attention was directed towards determining the effect of post-fabrication heat treatments on the microstructural evolution of AlSi10Mg alloy fabricated using two different routes. Three initial alloy conditions were considered prior to ECAP deformation: (1) as-cast in solution treated (T4) condition, (2) SLM in T4 condition, (3) SLM subjected to low-temperature annealing. Light microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction line broadening analysis, and electron backscattered diffraction analysis were used to characterize the microstructures before and after ECAP. The results indicated that SLM followed by low-temperature annealing led to superior mechanical properties, relative to the two other conditions. Microscopic analyses revealed that the partial-cellular structure contributed to strong work hardening. This behavior enhanced the material’s strength because of the enhanced accumulation of geometrically necessary dislocations during ECAP deformation.

Al-3.9wt.%Cu alloy was subjected to equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) and subsequent low temperature annealing treatment, and the corrosion resistance of the samples was investigated by potentiodynamic polarization measurements in 3.5% NaCl solution. The results show that the corrosion rate of the ultrafine-grained alloy increases, in comparison with the coarse-grained alloy. Meanwhile, it is noted that the corrosion resistance of the alloy subjected to ECAP can be improved by relief annealing.

Equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) was performed on a Mg (6 wt %) Zn alloy at temperatures from 160 to 240 °C and the microstructures and mechanical properties were studied using optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and an electronic universal testing machine. The results showed that ECAP was effective for grain refinement and a bi-modal grain structure formed at low temperatures, which was stable during ECAP from 160 to 200 °C. MgZn2 phase and Mg4Zn7 phase were generated during the ECAP process. The mechanical properties remarkably increased after two repetitions of ECAP. However, the strengths could not be further improved by increasing the plastic deformation, but decreased when ECAP was performed between 200 and 240 °C. The mechanical properties of the ECAP Mg-6Zn alloy was determined by a combination of grain refinement strengthening, precipitation hardening, and texture softening.

Commercial pure iron billets having diameter of 60 mm and length of 180 mm were subjected to equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) at 350 °C for 1-4 passes via route BC. Microstructural evolutions on three planes (X, Y, Z planes) were characterized by optical microscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was found that after four passes an ultrafine microstructure could be formed on the X plane, but a band structure remained on the Z plane. Accordingly, the mechanical properties exhibited apparent dependence on the orientations. The strength in the X and Y directions was higher than that in the Z direction. The microstructural refinement and mechanical properties were discussed in terms of experimental results.

The microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated in an industrial Al-Cu-Mg alloy processed by Equal Channel Angular Pressing ECAP and heating. The die used is formed by two channels intersecting at an angle 90°. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and orientation (ASTAR) imaging were used in addition to hardness measurements. After heating, a sub-micron grain size is retained. In addition, a further hardening is observed due to secondary precipitation. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) showed that the activation energy of θ’ precipitation is strongly lowered after ECAP.

Mechanical properties usually take precedence for wrought magnesium alloy when it would be used as a structure material. This paper proposed an approach that achieved high strength in AZ91 Mg alloy. The main procedure combined solution heat treatment, equal channel angular pressing (ECAP), and the subsequent low temperature rolling. After solution heat treatment and ECAP, the alloy had fine grains and excellent ductility, which benefited the following rolling at low temperature. By the following rolling (at 150 °C), the strength was further increased to ~432 MPa with a moderate ductility. This approach was proved effective in refining the grains and accumulating dislocations. The ultrahigh strength was attributed to the high density of dislocations and fine structure. The uniformly distributed fine precipitates also supplied precipitate hardening. Recrystallization that happened during rolling and annealing was the main reason for the moderate ductility.

Microstructures of a maraging steel subjected to equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) up to 16 passes at room temperature were investigated. Electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) examinations showed that the microstructures of the as-processed samples were characterized by a well-defined lamellar structure. With increasing the number of ECAP passes from 1 to 16, the lamellar spacing was significantly decreased from ~323 nm to ~54 nm, while the volume fraction of high-angle lamellar boundaries (HALBs, having the misorientation larger than 15o) was obviously increased form ~46% to ~80%. The real lamellar-type nanostructured microstructures were completely accomplished in the tested steel after 8 or more ECAP passes. In addition, the grain refinement mechanism of maraging steel during the processing was discussed in detail.

AbstractThe mechanical integrity of rolled ZM21 Mg was improved by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) to function as a potential biodegradable bone screw implant. Electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) revealed deformed grains of 45 µm observed in rolled ZM21 Mg. They were transformed to equiaxed fine grains of 5.4 µm after 4th pass ECAP. The yield strength of rolled and ECAPed ZM21 Mg alloys were comparable. In contrast, 4th pass ZM21 Mg exhibited relatively higher elongation when compared to rolled sample. The mechanical properties of rolled and ECAPed ZM21 Mg were dependant on both grain refinement and crystallographic texture. The rolled and 4th pass ECAPed tensile samples exhibited nonlinear deterioration of mechanical properties when tested after 7, 14, 21 and 28 days immersion in Hank’s solution. The evaluation signifies that regardless their processing condition, ZM21 Mg alloys are suitable for surgical areas that requires high mechanical strength. In addition, the 4th pass ECAP samples were viable to MG-63 cells proving themselves to be promising candidates for future in vivo studies.

Analysis of the results of the microstructure and the mechanical properties change in AA1050 aluminum alloy of technical purity processed using ECAP (Equal Channel Angular Pressing) and KoBo deformation methods are presented in the paper.. ECAP process was performed according to Bc scheme in the range from 1 up to 10 passes. Changes of microstructure were analyzed using scanning electrone microscope equipped with electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) system. Microstructure and fraction of high-angle grain boundaries in KoBo processed samples were similar to those observed in ECAP processed samples after four passes. The most significant microstructure refinement was observed in ECAP processed sample submitted to 10 passes. In ECAP method the systematic increase of mechanical properties was observed along with increase of deformation degree.

The Mg-6Zn-2Si alloy was processed by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) for 4 passes and 8 passes at 573K, and the microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloy before and after ECAP were studied. The results show that Chinese script type interphase of Mg2Si was crushed into dispersed particles, and significant grain refinement was also introduced to the matrix phase (α-Mg) and Mg51Zn20 phase after 4 passes of ECAP. The yield strength was increased by 180%, elongation by 140% and tensile strength by 75%. The microstructure and mechanical properties remained reasonably constant between 4 and 8 passes of ECAP. The mechanism of improvement on microstructure and mechanical properties of the experimental alloy by subjecting ECAP was also investigated.
