AbstractOnline casinos are one of Sweden’s largest gambling sectors. Increased advertising investment and advertising frequency have sought to attract Generation Y consumers to these casinos, yet it has been suggested that advertising can contribute to avoidance behaviours towards products and services, including online casinos and specific gambling brands. The various advertising aspects used in gambling advertising and their impact on behaviour have not been widely researched. Thus, the purpose of this study was to explore the use of creative strategies in casino advertising and how it contributes to the avoidance of online casinos, specifically among Swedish Generation Y consumers. As an exploratory study, qualitative methods were used. Initially, 13 casino advertisements were analysed to identify the strategies used in the advertisements. These were then presented to Generation Y consumers in three focus groups and six in-depth interviews. The analysis of the advertising shows the use of people and characters in presenting the casino brand. Male voice-overs were utilised in addition to music and other casino-related sounds. The advertising also used bright colours to attract attention. The impact of these advertisements is that the content, the auditory cues rather than just music, the emotional response, and the frequency of the advertising were found to contribute to the avoidance of casino brands. Furthermore, the ethics and general attitudes to the industry impact the decision to avoid these brands. The managerial implication of this research shows the impact of advertisements on the decision to avoid a brand, specifically a casino brand.

Early childhood education on sustainability has been an issue of high relevance in the last decade. In Spain, many different efforts have been made to increase children’s knowledge, skills, and awareness related to sustainability issues. However, uncertainty about the effectiveness of education on sustainable development exists. This research reports on an exploratory study organized by the association that promotes aluminum packaging recycling in Spain (Arpal). Seven teachers were trained on sustainability in general and on aluminum packaging recycling in particular. These teachers defined and implemented a teaching unit with active learning activities that involved three preschools. Fifty-four children under 6 years of age, mainly 2 and 3 years old, along with their parents, participated in the teaching unit. Qualitative and quantitative methods (questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and focus groups) were carried out to assess the impact. The results proved that different partners, such as children, parents, teachers, managers, and associations, can work together with the common goal of improving education on sustainable development in early childhood, and all of them benefit from this collaboration. Moreover, this study confirmed that education on sustainability should be embedded in the daily routine of preschools. Furthermore, after the exploratory study, the teaching unit was implemented in 29 Andalusian preschools.

Abstract Background In 2017, approximately 11% of pregnant women in France consumed alcohol despite its harmful consequences on the fetus (Andler, 2018). Our research aims at exploring the impact of warnings displayed on alcohol packaging: the current pictogram and alternative possible messages that differ regarding content and design will be explored. Methods In-depth interviews were conducted with 20 French women, including women who did not drink alcohol during their pregnancy, women who drank alcohol, women in pregnancy planning and breastfeeding mothers. Questions were asked about the participants perception of drinking alcohol during pregnancy, alcohol warnings: the current pictogram, new contents (negative and positive) for warnings and new designs (different pictograms combined with or without text). A thematic content analysis was carried out. Results The current pictogram lacks visibility and has no impact on the behaviour of the women. New suggested contents were on the whole welcomed. It can be noted that some participants felt that specific messages (e.g. intellectual disabilities, facial malformations etc.) were a more effective way of preventing alcohol consumption during pregnancy than general ones. On the contrary, other participants felt that a general message such as ’Zero alcohol during pregnancy’, or positive messages such as a cessation service message, was more effective. The majority of participants believed that pictograms with a better visibility; more eye-catching; vivid images of fetuses, etc., would have a greater impact on alcohol consumption. Conclusions This study highlights the need for changes to pictogram currently used on alcohol packaging in France. Our results show that recent changes proposed by the French government (a slight increase in the size of the current pictogram) will most likely have little effect on preventing alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Key messages The current pictogram on alcohol bottles in France has little or no effect. The French government should implement new warnings both in terms of content and design.

Abstract Background The diagnosis of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) may affect women’s mental wellbeing, functioning and quality of life, with potentially negative effects on treatment adherence. Identifying and addressing the psychological and emotional needs of women with GDM, could have benefits for sustainable long-term behavioural change following the affected pregnancy. This study explored the lived experiences of women with GDM and the impact of GDM on their experience of pregnancy and sense of well-being. Methods Purposive sampling was used to recruit women who had been diagnosed with GDM in their previous pregnancy and received antenatal care at a tertiary hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. This was a descriptive qualitative study using a combination of focus groups and in-depth interviews for an in- depth exploration of women’s lived experiences of GDM, their context and perceived needs. Data analysis followed an iterative thematic analysis approach. Results Thirty-five women participated in nine focus groups and five in-depth interviews. Women discussed the emotional and psychological burden of having GDM, highlighting (i) their initial emotional reactions to receiving a GDM diagnosis, (ii) their experience of adjusting to the constraints of living with GDM (iii) their feelings of apprehension about childbirth and their maternal role and (iv) their feelings of abandonment in the post-partum period once the intensive support from both health system and family ends. Conclusions The current biomedical model used in the management of GDM, is highly foetal-centric and fails to acknowledge important psychological factors that contribute to women’s overall wellbeing and experience of pregnancy. These results demonstrate the importance of incorporating mental health support in the management and care for women with GDM in public health services, along with facilitating emotional support from partners and family members. Based on our findings, we recommend routine mental health and psychosocial vulnerability screening and monitoring for women diagnosed with GDM throughout pregnancy and postpartum to improve prognoses.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to reflect on how qualitative approaches can improve a prevalence study on older adults’ violence. The paper describes how qualitative data can help frame a complex and multidimensional problem, such as older adults’ violence, within the culture where it happens and therefore prevent two risks present in prevalence studies: underestimation and overestimation. Design/methodology/approach – To adequately measure violence and violent behaviours the authors first conducted four focus groups with the target population – older adults aged 60 and over – and 13 in-depth interviews with older adult victims of violence. Through content analysis of focus groups and in-depth interviews the authors sought to understand how violence is perceived, defined and limited by the general population and by victims. Findings – By employing qualitative methods the authors were able to operationalise violence, decide upon and select specific behaviours to measure, rephrase questions and develop strategies to approach the general population through telephone interviews. Research limitations/implications – The qualitative approaches helped reduce participants bias in the prevalence study and therefore to minimise the risks of underestimation and overestimation. Originality/value – The study exemplifies how assessing quantitatively to a sensitive subject requires taking into account the perspective of the target population through a qualitative approach.

This article reports findings of an exploratory study examining the impact of intermittent partner absence on couple relationships and family life. Drawing on data collected through in-depth interviews with seafarers and their partners, it considers the period when the seafarer is home on leave to examine the salience of the ‘breadwinner’ role to contemporary masculine identity and explore and contrast the experiences of seafarers at home on leave to that of unemployed men. The article concludes that during the seafarers’ leave periods, the experience of sea-faring families has many parallels with that of unemployed men and their families. While seafarers do not lose their ‘breadwinner’ role, they experience considerable problems associated with loss of role during their leave period, and frequently experience a sense of ‘role displacement’ where they feel redundant, unnecessary and essentially ‘outsiders’ in relation to their families.

National organizations call for providing trauma-informed care (TIC) to those who have experienced adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and to the population as a whole. All providers and staff are at risk for experiencing stress and burnout when they care for patients with multiple complex needs and insufficient resources. All are at risk but not all develop burnout. This study shares findings from a pilot project to implement training on ACEs and toxic stress in a busy urban pediatric primary care practice. Using a mixed-methods approach, we assessed pre and post self-reported knowledge and attitudes via surveys ( n = 52), baseline in-depth interviews ( n = 16), focus groups (three groups, n = 36), and follow-up interviews ( n = 13). After training, staff reported a marginally significant increase in rating the office as doing a good job meeting the needs of families around childhood trauma (72% vs. 46%, p = 0.057). Key themes from baseline in-depth interviews and focus groups identified the following: (1) pervasiveness of trauma and adversity among families in the practice, (2) empathy for families with significant social needs, (3) feelings of frustration to alleviate stressors identified during visits, (4) need for social support and coping mechanisms to alleviate workplace stress, and (5) receptiveness to enhance knowledge and understanding. Key themes from follow-up interviews and focus groups highlighted the impact of compassion fatigue and strategies to promote self-care. We discuss these findings and challenges in relation to providing TIC and professional development.

The impact of migraine on quality of life has been traditionally evaluated by quantitative analysis, but diverse aspects remain insufficiently assessed, so a complementary qualitative approach may have advantages. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of migraine on the quality of life of migraineurs through the perception of patients and their relatives, and healthcare professionals. Qualitative methods were used, including six focus groups and nine personal interviews with 33 migraine patients under physician-directed treatment, five self-medicated patients, five relatives of migraine patients and seven healthcare professionals. Migraine has a negative affect on the quality of life, including physical, emotional and social aspects of daily life such as family, work and social relationships. Family environment and psychological well-being of patients were the aspects most affected according to patients and relatives. Health professionals emphasized work impairment and focused on pharmacological management and on the need for adequate information about migraine for non-medicated patients and patients' relatives. Qualitative methods, such as focus groups and interviews, are a valuable resource for assessing quality of life and well-being of migraine patients. These techniques open up new areas for further research.

BACKGROUND: The ability of adolescents to overcome the impact of domestic violence and reflect on the achievements is a form of resilience. AIM: The study explored an in-depth description of the discovery process of the resilience ability in adolescent survivors of domestic violence. METHODS: This qualitative research with a descriptive phenomenology approach interviewed seven adolescent survivors between the ages of 15 and 21. In-depth interviews were conducted, and demographic data were collected. Interviews were transcribed and coded thematically. Data was analyzed with the method of Colaizzi. RESULTS: Four themes were derived from the interviews, including painful words from the close family member as a form of intimidation; the emotional response as imprinted feeling caused by the domestic violence; self-struggle starts from their own; and the happiness of the close family member as the purpose of life. CONCLUSION: Adolescents responses to domestic violence cause mental health problems, however, they also manage to overcome problems, fulfill goals, and review their past and current life events to achieve life's purpose.
