Abstract Background: Desquamative gingivitis (DG) is a non-plaque-induced, blistering and painful condition occurring most frequently on the labial aspect of the attached gingiva of anterior teeth. The incidence of DG is highest around 50 years of age, and usually indicates the presence of oral or systemic diseases. The purpose of our study was to determine the impact of DG on periodontal health by recording the plaque index, gingival index and gingival bleeding index in a group of patients with DG, compared to healthy controls. Materials and methods: Recordings of specific indices were performed in a group of 26 patients with DG and compared with 24 healthy individuals. These were followed by radiographic examinations in order to assess the loss of marginal alveolar bone. Results: The results showed that patients with DG had a statistically significant increase in periodontal indices, with more gingival inflammation and plaque retention compared to the control group (p <0.05). The highest scores for gingival inflammation were recorded in patients with DG, but on radiographic evaluation the difference was related only to gender, men being more affected by alveolar bone loss in both groups (p <0.05). Conclusions: The incidence and severity of gingival inflammation proved to be higher in patients with DG, which calls for better preventive and maintenance treatment protocols in this group of patients. Early diagnosis and initial-phase periodontal treatment are very important in preventing further tissue breakdown.

Background: An injury to both the primary and permanent teeth and the supporting structures is one of the most common dental problems seen in children. Splinting is usually difficult or impossible to perform in the primary dentition (due to diminutive room size and lack of patient cooperation). Healing must, therefore, occur despite mobility at the fracture line, usually resulting in interposition of connective tissue. In some instances, infection will occur in the coronal pulp. The present study reported a case of trauma to the anterior primary teeth and alveolar bone in a four year old child. The trauma has caused fracture to the crowns and roots of the primary anterior teeth. The following case was managed in a procedure that may provide primary teeth subjected to trauma a better chance than extraction with a better prognosis. Case presentation: a 4 and a half year old child was subjected to trauma in anterior segment of maxilla. Suturing of the torn soft tissue was the first step followed by pulpotomy for the left primary lateral incisor. Fixation of the right primary central and lateral incisors was done by acid etch wire fixation. Both clinical and radiographic follow up was carried out for 6.4 years. Results: healing of the soft tissue was observed after one week and completed after two months. Fixation of the teeth continued for ten months. The fracture lines in the roots remained in position. Clinically there was no sign of any pulpal inflammation or necrosis. Radiographically, no signs of infection to the surrounding tissues could be seen, no resorption in the alveolar bone, external or internal resorption of the root did not happen also. After ten months fixation ended and the wire was removed. At that time there was normal resorption of the roots of the primary incisors in relation with the normal development of the permanent incisors. After 3 years both permanent central incisors erupted in their normal position. After 6.4 years all four permanent incisors erupted into occlusion in their normal position. Conclusion: primary teeth with root fractures and severely mobile coronal fragments can be treated by a conservative approach. The severity of the sequels is directly related to the degree of permanent tooth formation (child’s age), type of dental trauma and extent of the impact. Periodontal disease is an inflammatory condition that alters the periodontium, resulting in destruction of the alveolar bone; without treatment the condition may lead to tooth loss. Dental implants are an alternative for substitution of naturally lost teeth as they have high success rates; however, some factors are related to its failure. Peri-implantitis (PI) is a pathological condition that affects the tissues surrounding dental implants and has been reported as the major cause of implant failure; PI and periodontal diseases are characterized by tissue inflammation and bone damage. In homeostasis conditions, reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been shown to be involved in cell maintenance, signal transduction, and repair of all tissues, but ROS overaccumulation leads to oxidative stress, which generates cell damage and tissue destruction; likewise, antioxidants protect against the destructive effects of ROS by turning free radicals into waste products. The main purpose of this review was to determine some aspects of inflammatory responses and oxidative stress and analyze their relationship with the lack of osseointegration and PI.

Abstract Periodontal disease (PD) has been suggested to be a risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). We tested the impact of ligature-induced PD on 5xFAD mice and WT littermates. At baseline, 5xFAD mice presented significant alveolar bone loss compared to WT mice. After the induction of PD, both WT and 5xFAD mice experienced alveolar bone loss. PD increased the level of Iba1-immunostained microglia in WT mice. In 5xFAD mice, PD increased the level of insoluble Aβ42. The increased level in Iba1 immunostaining that parallels the accumulation of Aβ in 5xFAD mice was not affected by PD except for a decrease in the dentate gyrus. Analysis of double-label fluorescent images showed a decline in Iba1 in the proximity of Aβ plaques in 5xFAD mice with PD compared to those without PD suggesting a PD-induced decrease in plaque-associated microglia (PAM). PD reduced IL-6, MCP-1, GM-CSF, and IFN-γ in brains of WT mice and reduced IL-10 in 5xFAD mice. The data demonstrated that PD increases neuroinflammation in WT mice and disrupts the neuroinflammatory response in 5xFAD mice and suggest that microglia is central to the association between PD and AD.

Recently, the prevalence and importance of RNA editing have been illuminated in mammals. However, studies on RNA editing of pigs, a widely used biomedical model animal, are rare. Here we collected RNA sequencing data across 11 tissues and identified more than 490,000 RNA editing sites. We annotated their biological features, detected flank sequence characteristics of A-to-I editing sites and the impact of A-to-I editing on miRNA–mRNA interactions, and identified RNA editing quantitative trait loci (edQTL). Sus scrofa RNA editing sites showed high enrichment in repetitive regions with a median editing level as 15.38%. Expectedly, 96.3% of the editing sites located in non-coding regions including intron, 3′ UTRs, intergenic, and gene proximal regions. There were 2233 editing sites located in the coding regions and 980 of them caused missense mutation. Our results indicated that to an A-to-I editing site, the adjacent four nucleotides, two before it and two after it, have a high impact on the editing occurrences. A commonly observed editing motif is CCAGG. We found that 4552 A-to-I RNA editing sites could disturb the original binding efficiencies of miRNAs and 4176 A-to-I RNA editing sites created new potential miRNA target sites. In addition, we performed edQTL analysis and found that 1134 edQTLs that significantly affected the editing levels of 137 RNA editing sites. Finally, we constructed PRESDB, the first pig RNA editing sites database. The site provides necessary functions associated with Sus scrofa RNA editing study.

Gastrointestinal parasites are responsible for substantial loss of productivity in livestock production. This study was carried out with the aim of determining the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites of pigs in Ushongo LGA of Benue State, Nigeria over a period of three months Four hundred fecal samples were collected from the rectum of pigs and screened using the simple tube floatation and tube sedimentation techniques. An overall prevalence of 33.5% was observed. A total of 9 parasite species were isolated. Ascaris, Fasciola, Taenia solium, Trichuris suis, Hymenolepsis, Isospora suis, Strongyloides, Eimeria Spp and Hookworm had a prevalence of 24.17%,16.48%, 19.78%, 6.59%, 1.09%, 3.29%, 18.69%, 6.59%, 3.29%respectively.This study reveals that gastrointestinal parasites are relatively low in Ushongo L.G.A. Further investigation should be carried out to study the impact of parasitic infestation of pigs on public health in the study area.

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease associated with the formation of dysbiotic plaque biofilms and characterized by the progressive destruction of the alveolar bone. The transition from health to disease is characterized by a shift in periodontal immune cell composition, from mostly innate (neutrophils) to adaptive (T lymphocytes) immune responses. Resolvin E1 (RvE1) is a specialized pro-resolution mediator (SPMs), produced in response to inflammation, to enhance its resolution. Previous studies have indicated the therapeutic potential of RvE1 in periodontal disease; however, the impact of RvE1 in the microbial-elicited osteoclastogenic immune response remains uncharacterized in vivo. In the present study, we studied the impact of RvE1 on the gingival inflammatory infiltrate formation during periodontitis in a mouse model. First, we characterized the temporal-dependent changes of the main immune cells infiltrating the gingiva by flow cytometry. Then, we evaluated the impact of early or delayed RvE1 administration on the gingival immune infiltration and cervical lymph nodes composition. We observed a consistent inhibitory outcome on T cells -particularly effector T cells- and a protective effect on regulatory T cells (Tregs). Our data further demonstrated the wide range of actions of RvE1, its preventive role in the establishment of the adaptive immune response during inflammation, and bone protective capacity.
