Abstract In order to enhance the grinding performance of alumina ceramic materials, the surface of the grinding wheels are ablated by laser radiation before grinding, and the three types of leaf-vein bionic grinding wheels with different micro-groove pitches are formed to compare the grinding experiments with normal grinding wheels. The grinding forces and surface roughness were gauged and the morphological characteristics of ground workpiece surfaces were studied. The results showed that with the increase of groove pitch, the normal grinding force was reduced by 9.6-63%, while the tangential grinding force is reduced by 8.3-42%. The groove can promote the flow of coolant, accelerate the heat dissipation and chip removal in the grinding area, reduce the damage of the workpiece and the wear of the grinding wheel, so the vein bionic grinding wheel had more tremendous processing advantages. Among the four kinds of grinding wheels, the leaf-vein bionic grinding wheel with groove pitch equal to 8mm obtained the best grinding effect. The vein-shaped groove had a positive impact on the grinding process.

Manufacturing of vitrified bond CBN wheels for internal precision grinding of the air-conditioner compressor piston hole is still big challenge to all of the domestic manufacturers. Recently, by choosing pre-melting mixed CBN abrasives and a proper sintering process, a cost-effective method was conceived to produce grinding wheels of comparative quality. The grinding performance of wheels was evaluated with a series of internal precision grinding of compressor piston hole. Experimental results show that the vitrified bond CBN grinding wheel produced by this method has better grinding performance, and can be substitute to the same type of grinding wheels imported. But the manufacturing cost is only 60% of the wheel imported according to estimation.

In the grinding operation, a stiff layer of air gets formed around the periphery of the grinding wheel that causes deterioration of its performance. In the present work, in order to restrict the generation of stiff air layer around the periphery of the grinding wheel, a rubber tube is pasted on its surface to improve the grinding performance. An experimental investigation is carried out with low alloy steel as the work material. Taguchi's L9 orthogonal array is considered for the design of experiments while taking cutting speed, depth of cut, and type of the cutting fluid as the input grinding parameters. A comparative analysis using rubber tube-pasted grinding wheel and normal grinding wheel reveals that the developed wheel significantly improves the grinding performance with respect to surface roughness, amplitude of vibration and grinding ratio, as compared to the normal wheel. Moreover, grey relational analysis aided with fuzzy logic is applied in the experimental results to derive the optimal combination of process parameters for further enhancement of the grinding performance. Finally, analysis of variance results identify cutting speed as the most significant parameter while grinding with normal wheel, whereas depth of cut appears to be the most important parameter while machining with rubber tube-pasted grinding wheel.

In order to achieve the controllability of the abrasive arrangement on the working surface of grinding wheel,a new kind of the superabrasive grinding wheel, which has defined abrasive grain cluster pattern, has been designed based on the phyllotaxis theory of biology, and fabricated with UV lithography method and electroplating technology. The analytical results indicate that the phyllotactic parameters influence on the abrasive arrangement configuration on the work surface of the superabrasive grinding wheel, so as to improve grinding performance of the grinding wheel, increasing the diameter of phyllotactic abrasive grain cluster and decreasing phyllotactic coefficient can increases the abrasive grain density of the surperabrasive grinding wheel surface. Electroplating experimental results show that the reasonable electroplating processes can reduce the faults of defined abrasive arrangement on the superabrasive grinding wheel surface.

Grinding performance can be influenced by various grinding conditions including workpiece materials properties, grinding wheel properties, grinding operational parameters and dressing operational parameters. In order to achieve stable optimal grinding performance, it is important to select the most suitable operational control parameters to match grinding requirement and to minimize the effects of grinding wheel wear and other changes in the process environment. The paper presents a simple adaptive control logic strategy for the selection of dressing and grinding conditions based on available sensing techniques. In this study, desirable grinding behaviour is discussed to demonstrate how to extract useful process information to guide process parameter adjustment for a stable satisfactory grinding performance.

In V-groove ELID grinding process, to achieve optimal grinding performance and satisfactory surface quality and profile accuracy, metal bonded diamond grinding wheels need to be carefully sharpened. In this paper, we applied the proposed new micro-truing method consisting of electro-discharge truing and electrolysis-assisted mechanical truing to sharpen the edge of large grinding wheels. The minimum wheel tip radiuses of 6.3 and 8.5µm were achieved for the #4000 and #20000 grinding wheels. The truing mechanisms and sharpening performance are also discussed.

There is the grade as one of the selection criteria of a grinding wheel like WA whetstone or GC whetstone. The grade of grinding wheel is defined as an index which shows the strength of connection of a grain and a grain, and is usually estimated by bending strength. There are many papers about the relationship between the grade of a grinding wheel and the grinding performance. And, the relationship between the grade of a grinding wheel and the grinding performance is almost clear. Also, the relationship between mechanical properties of a grinding wheel and the grade is also clear. On the other hand, since the grain layer of a super abrasive grinding wheel is thin, it is difficult to apply the conventional evaluation test of the grade. And, the evaluation method of the grade which can be adapted the super abrasive grinding wheel is not established. In addition, since the grade of a super abrasive grinding wheel is a manufacture manufacturer's original standard, there is a minute difference by manufacturer. The super abrasive grinding wheel as well as the grinding wheel is conjectured that the grade influences the grinding performance. Namely, it is important to relate the grade and the mechanical properties of a grain layer. However, researches which relate the grade, the grinding performance and the mechanical properties of a super abrasive grinding wheel are not done so far. Therefore, this study examined the relationship between the mechanical properties of a grain layer of a super abrasive grinding wheel and the grade, the grinding performance. The final objective of this study is to evaluate the grinding performance from mechanical properties of a grain layer of a super abrasive grinding wheel. The purpose of this report is to clarify relationship between the grade and the grinding force in a resinoid bond diamond wheel. The specific experiment procedure is as follows. When carrying out surface grinding of the diamond sticks using a grinding wheel, the relationship of the grade and the grinding force was clarified. And based on the knowledge acquired in this experiment, relationship between the grade of a super abrasive grinding wheel and the grinding force was considered. As the results, it confirmed that the grade of a resinoid bond diamond wheel could be evaluated by the grinding force.

An investigation is described of the effects of rotary dressing on grinding wheel performance. Grinding performance is evaluated mainly in terms of the grinding forces and surface finish. It is demonstrated that the magnitudes of the grinding forces can be attributed to differences in the size of the wear flat area obtained by the various rotary dressing conditions. For finer dresser infeeds and greater differences between the peripheral velocities of the dresser and the grinding wheel, bigger grinding forces and smoother surfaces are obtained. A direct relationship is obtained between the grinding performance and the dressing interference angle, a larger angle resulting in smaller grinding forces and rougher surfaces. This leads to a trade-off relationship between grinding forces and surface roughness which characterizes the rotary dressing process.

CBN grinding wheels are increasingly used on a wide range of engineering materials. This paper compares the grinding performance of monocrystalline (M-CBN) and polycrystalline (P-CBN) abrasives with a newly developed nanocrystalline (N-CBN) abrasive, when grinding nickel-based superalloys. The N-CBN grits possess average crystal grain diameters less than 1 μm compared to average primary grain diameters of 2.3 μm for P-CBN. It was found that the nanocrystalline CBN grits possess higher fracture strength which give reduced wear rates and yield an order of magnitude increase in grinding wheel life. Analysis of the cutting edge distribution shows that the reduced wear rate of N-CBN is due to the predominance of a micro-fracturing mode of abrasive wear. The size of this micro-fracturing is considerably smaller in N-CBN than in P-CBN.

Grinding, a technique for removing abrasive materials, is a chip-removal process that uses an individual abrasive grain as the cutting tool. Abrasive material removal processes can be very challenging owing to the high power requirements and the resulting high temperatures, especially at the workpiece-wheel interface. This paper presents a novel system that uses graphite particles impregnated in an aluminum oxide matrix to form a grinding wheel. This study specifically investigated grinding wheels with a graphite content of 0.5 wt%. The new grinding wheel was compared with conventional grinding wheels by comparing the factors of grinding performance, such as surface roughness, morphology, wheel wear ratio, grinding temperature, and grinding forces, when the wheels were used under two different coolant strategiesdry and with minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) using pure water. This study found that there is a considerable improvement in the grinding performance using graphite-impregnated grinding wheels over the performance obtained using conventional grinding wheels. The use of 0.5 wt% graphite provided better surface roughness and topography, lower grinding temperature, and decreased force; in addition, wheel consumption was lower, resulting in extended wheel life.
