Understanding the first year of novice school counsellors

AbstractPrevious research shows that the first year of a school counsellor’s career is one of the most critical stages. However, despite this importance, there is a limited number of studies that examine what novice school counsellors experience during their first year. The primary purpose of this qualitative study is to examine in detail the common experiences of novice school counsellors who have worked the first year of their professional career and to explore comprehensive themes regarding these experiences. Following a purposive sampling strategy, 33 school counsellors who started their profession in 19 different cities of Turkey were interviewed. As a result of the thematic analysis, five major themes emerged describing the first-year experiences of school counsellors: ‘Introduction’, ‘Fighting against Prejudices’, ‘Organising Counselling Service Room’, ‘Incongruence between Training and Work Definitions’, and ‘Longing for College Years’.

Abstract Background: Due to the common instability caused by political and security issues, Lebanese hospitals have experienced acts of terrorism multiple times. The most recent Beirut Explosion even forced several hospitals to cease operations for the first time in decades—but studies show the preparedness levels for such attacks in similar countries are low. Objective: The aim of this study is to explore the experience of Lebanese hospitals with terrorist attacks. Methods: This qualitative study used semi-structured interviews with various stakeholders to assess their experience with terrorist bombings. Data was analyzed using the thematic analysis method. Results: The researchers found that Lebanese hospitals vary greatly in their structures and procedures. Those differences are a function of 3 contextual factors: location, culture, and accreditation status. Hospitals found near ‘dangerous zones’ were more likely to be aware and to have better response to such events. A severe lack of communication, unity of command, and collaboration between stakeholders has made the process fragmented. Conclusion: The researchers recommend a larger role for the Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) in this process, and the creation of a platform where Lebanese organizations can share their experiences to improve preparedness and resilience of the Lebanese healthcare system in the face of terrorism.

Abstract Previous studies have shown that collaboration between school counsellors and other stakeholders such as teachers and administrators leads to improved outcomes for students and a better school climate. The current qualitative study explored the experiences and perceptions of novice school counsellors in India regarding collaboration with teachers and administrators. The sample included 11 novice school counsellors working in five different cities who were recruited using purposive sampling. The thematic analysis of the data collected via semistructured interviews revealed six main themes: ‘Counsellors’ perceptions about collaboration’, ‘Collaboration with teachers’, ‘Collaboration with administrators’, ‘Challenges faced during collaboration’, ‘Strategies helpful in collaboration’ and ‘Impact of training’. Implications discussed include the need for school counsellors to advocate for their role, the need for training programs to prepare stakeholders for collaboration, and the need for policies to integrate the role of a school counsellor into schools.

In this qualitative study, we explored the challenges first year engineering graphics and design (EGD) pre-service teachers (PSTs) encounter when they read and interpret assembly drawings (ADs). Vygotsky's zone of proximal development framed this study. Purposive sampling was used to generate data from twenty-one first year EGD PSTs using a think-aloud task and individual semi-structured interviews. We subjected the data to content analysis. The findings reveal that first year EGD PSTs, when they attempt to read and interpret ADs, encounter five challenges that have implications for the teaching of EGD with regard to scaffolding the development of spatial visual ability in first year EGD PSTs.

ObjectivesIn the last 30 years, opioid maintenance treatment prescription (OMT) has changed patients’ and also changed physicians’ practices. General practitioners (GPs) have to deal with patients on OMT who are in acute pain. The objective of this qualitative study was to explore medical care challenges and solutions identified by GPs in the management of acute pain among patients receiving OMT.Design and settingQualitative study with semistructured interviews were used as a data collection technique with a sampling strategy using a snowball sampling method to obtain a purposive sample of practicing GPs. Analysis was undertaken using a thematic analysis method.ParticipantsTwelve GPs, working in France (Brittany) who prescribe OMT were interviewed.ResultsThe thematic analysis resulted in two main themes relating to specificities and difficulties identified: (1) Medical care and training challenges identified by GPs treating patients on OMT with acute pain, with four subthemes : management of these situations not concerning primary care, lack of training prompts GPs to rely on peer and specialist support, lack of guidelines and conflicting recommendations between clinicians in different settings (2) linked to the patient–GP relationship, with six subthemes: Implementing an individualised centred approach, acute pain management during OMT relies on a relationship based on trust, GPs found difficulties in evaluating and treating pain, difficulties in care adherence, fear of patients destabilisation, fear of misuse and diversion.ConclusionThe complexity of acute pain and OMT entails significant challenges for clinicians and patients. In primary care, it is hard to achieve a balance between pain relief and opioid use disorder treatment, in a global patient-centred approach. Fear of misuse or diversion was not a important factor, except for patients not known to the practitioners, but GPs were concerned with the risks of patient destabilisation in situations of acute pain.

Background: Socially the use of devices causes teenagers to become less sociable. Many teenagers spend most of their time playing gadgets so they carry them wherever they go. This happens to the Bajo tribes who experience social changes that have an impact on their life patterns.Method: This study was a qualitative study with a phenomenological approach with the population in this study were the teenagers of the Bajo Tribe in Wakatobi Regency as many as 227 people and the number of samples was six adolescences Bajo Tribe. Using samples with a purposive sampling technique. For gathering the data, the investigator employed interview and observation guidelines, video recorder, and field note. The researchers used observation, interview and video recording in collecting the data and employed thematic analysis in data analysis. Results: The results of the research on these were three themes including namely the use of devices, addiction and socialization revealed that the use of devices requires costs for operations and excessive use of devices will have an impact on health where adolescents have a sense of dependence on devices that have attractive designs, and cause individual and indifferent attitudes. Discussion: The conclusion of this study is that adolescents begin to lose time for socializing due to the use of devices that are interested in the applications in it

Kesulitan mereka tidakterlepas dari perbedaan-perbedaan mendasar pada struktur bahasa Indonesia sebagaibahasa ibu mereka dan bahasa Perancis yang tengah dipelajari. Penelitian ini dilaksanakandengan tujuan untuk mengetahui hambatan yang dimiliki mahasiswa pembelajar pemuladi Program Studi Sastra Perancis Universitas Padjadjaran dalam memahami gramatikabahasa Perancis. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode simak dancatat. Hasil analisis ini menunjukkan bahwa kesalahan-kesalahan yang umum dilakukanpembelajar pemula ada pada penggunaan accent, konjugasi verba, partikel défini maupunindéfini, accord penanda feminin atau jamak, serta pemilihan preposisi.Kata kunci: gramatika, bahasa Perancis, konjugasiABST RACTThe grammar in every language has its own particularities. French literaturestudents in the first year as a beginner learners often have problem in understandingFrench grammar which is frequently considered difficult. Their struggle is inseparablefrom the fundamental differences between Indonesian structure as their mother tongueand the French language which being studied. This research aims to know the obstaclesof the students of beginner learners in the French Literature of Padjadjaran university inunderstanding the basic French grammar. The method used in this research is referringand taking notes method. The results of the analysis shows that the common mistakes oflearners are in the use of accents, verb conjugations, particles défini or indéfini, markeraccord feminine or plural, and the selection of prepositions.Keywords: grammar, French, conjugation

Career choices of most pupils at the end of the primary school conform to gender norms. Only a few of them continue to study in a field traditionally considered appropriate for the opposite sex. The qualitative study presented here maps the reasons for such choices based on a sample of 25 female and 31 male students who study gender-atypical secondary school program for one to three years. The data were collected using a questionnaire with open-ended items and analysed using the qualitative thematic analysis. The results revealed that the reasons for school choices of boys and girls differ to certain extent. Their situation also differs with respect to the support they receive from their close ones and the acceptance by their classmates. The parents of girls disapproved of their choices more often than the parents of boys. Girls were also ridiculed more frequently by their peer groups.

Abstract Currently, Australia’s school counsellors are increasingly being called upon to respond to adolescent mental health needs. Through semistructured interviews with seven school counsellors working with adolescents, this qualitative study aimed to capture the lived experiences of this group of practitioners. By adopting a phenomenological approach and using thematic analysis, this study provides insight into their profession: the current ambiguity surrounding their role; the opportunities and obstacles they face; as well as the often-present tension between stakeholders including parents, other school staff and external agencies. The findings of this study indicate that school counsellors are challenged by the need to be advocates not only for their students but also for themselves and their roles within the school context.
