An assessment of sponge mariculture potential in the Spermonde Archipelago, Indonesia

In the present study, carried out in the Spermonde Archipelago, south Sulawesi, Indonesia, an assessment is presented of the farming potential of six sponge species (out of nine candidates considered) possessing pharmacologically promising compounds, i.e. Aaptos suberitoides, Amphimedon paraviridis, Callyspongia (Euplacella) biru, Hyrtios reticulatus, Ircinia ramosa and Pseudoceratina cf. verrucosa. A total of 350 cuttings was threaded on a polyethylene rope and attached to horizontal mooring structures at three experimental sites. Growth and survival were monitored for a period of six months and for some explants for an additional period of ten months. All cuttings were photographed at regular time intervals and growth was measured as increase in length and dry weight. With the exception of P. cf. verrucosa, survival rates were high (80–96%) during the mariculture period. Size increases were too little to be measured in A. suberitoides and P. cf. verrucosa cuttings. Significant growth was only observed for C. biru. The high growth potential and high survival rate of this sponge species suggest that it is a promising candidate for further mariculture development.

The effects of stocking density and the presence of shelter on the growth and mortality of early juvenile spiny lobsters, Jasus edwardsii, were determined over periods of 118 and 162 days respectively. Growth in length and weight were significantly slower with increasing stocking densities from 50 to 200 m–2, but overall mortality rates were very low and exhibited no difference amongst the densities tested. Conversely, shelter appeared to help to maintain high survival rates in early juvenile lobsters but had no effect on growth throughout the experiment. For maximum growth and survival in a commercial aquaculture operation, densities of 50 to 100 m–2, and adequate shelter would be recommended for early juvenile spiny lobsters. The implications of these results are discussed in relation to aquaculture of this species.

Ikan betutu Oxyeleotris marmorata merupakan ikan lokal potensial menjadi komoditas budidaya. Performa pertumbuhan dan sintasan dapat ditingkatkan dengan mengoptimalkan padat tebar. Tujuan penelitian adalah menentukan padat tebar yang menghasilkan sintasan dan pertumbuhan tinggi, serta respons fisiologis terbaik. Kolam yang digunakan berukuran 2 m x 1 m x 1 m dan diisi air 1 m3. Perlakuan yang diuji adalah kepadatan 50 ekor/m3, 100 ekor/m3, dan 150 ekor/m3. Ukuran benih yang digunakan 4,24 ± 0,58 cm dengan bobot 2,74 ± 0,45 g. Selama 60 hari masa pemeliharaan, pakan yang diberikan adalah cacing sutra Tubifex sp. secara sekenyangnya. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan sintasan benih ikan betutu yang dipelihara pada berbagai padat tebar tidak berbeda secara nyata, pertumbuhan spesifik panjang (1,50 ± 0,37%/hari) dan bobot total benih ikan betutu (1,95 ± 0,32%/hari) tertinggi, dan perubah respons fisiologis berupa gambaran darah paling stabil dicapai pada padat tebar 50 ekor/m3, serta biomassa tertinggi dicapai pada kepadatan 150/m3. Hasil penelitian ini dapat dijadikan informasi dasar untuk melakukan pendederan ikan betutu secara terkontrol.Sand goby, Oxyeleotris marmorata is a potential fish species for aquaculture in Indonesia. However, the growth performance and survival rate of the fish seed are still low. Such challenges could be solved through the optimization of stocking density of the fish. The research objective was to determine the optimal stocking density to produce high growth and survival rate, as well as the best physiological response. The ponds used in this experiment were 2 m x 1 m x 1 m in size (water volume: 1 m3). The stocking density treatments were 50, 100, and 150 individual/m3. The initial fish length average was 4.24 ± 0.58 cm, with the initial body weight average of 2.74 ± 0.45 g. During 60 days of rearing period, the fish were fed with Tubifex sp. ad libitum. The results showed that the survival rates on different stocking densities were not significantly different. The highest specific growth on length (1.50 ± 0.37%/day) and body weight total (1.95 ± 0.32%/day) and the most stable physiological response related to its hematological parameters were achieved by seed stocked at 50 individuals/m3. The best biomass total was achieved by seed stocked at 150 individuals/m3. The result of this study could be applied as basic information to culture sand goby in a controlled environment.

Abstract Background: Recent studies have shown that melatonin implants administered during pregnancy reduced neonatal lamb mortality and produced high survival rates at weaning. This study was designed to quantify the effects of melatonin implantation of ewes and lambs immediately after lambing on the growth of lambs and the quality of milk throughout lactation.Results: In experiment 1, treatment with melatonin the lambs did not have a significant effect on liveweight (LW) (±S.E.M.) at weaning or average daily gain (ADG) until weaning. These results were similar in experiment 2, although lambs reared by melatonin-implanted ewes presented significantly (P<0.05) higher LW at weaning and ADG than did lambs from control ewes. The effect of melatonin implantation of the mothers was particularly evident in male lambs, so that male lambs reared by treated ewes presented significantly higher LW at week 2, 3, and 4 than did male lambs reared by control ewes. The fat content of milk was significantly (P<0.05) higher in implanted ewes than it was in control ewes at day 45 of lactation. Protein and lactose content of milk did not differ significantly between groups. In experiment 3, using artificially-reared lambs, melatonin treatment of the lambs at birth did not have a significant effect on LW at weaning, or ADG. Conclusions: Melatonin treatment of ewes at lambing induced a high growth rate of their lambs and increased the fat content of the milk; however, the direct treatment with melatonin of the lambs at birth did not have an effect in their growth rate.

Modeling and management of facultative anadromous salmonids is complicated by their ability to select anadromous or resident life histories. Conventional theory for this behavior assumes individuals select the strategy offering highest expected reproductive success but does not predict how population-level consequences such as a stream’s smolt production emerge from the anadromy decision and habitat conditions. Our individual-based population model represents juvenile growth, survival, and anadromy decisions as outcomes of habitat and competition. In simulation experiments that varied stream growth and survival conditions, we examined how many simulated juveniles selected anadromy versus residence and how many of those choosing anadromy survived until smolting. Owing to variation in habitat and among individuals, the within-population frequency of anadromy changed gradually with growth and survival conditions instead of switching abruptly. Higher predation risk caused more juveniles to select anadromy, but fewer survived long enough to smolt. Improving growth appears a much safer way to increase smolt production compared with reducing freshwater survival. Smolt production peaked at high growth and moderately high survival, conditions that also produced many residents.

A coupled hydrodynamic–trophodynamic individual-based model of drift and feeding was utilized to analyze the intra- and inter-annual variability in growth and survival of cod (Gadus morhua) larvae in the central Baltic Sea. Highly temporally and spatially resolved simulated flow fields were used to investigate the potential drift of larval cod from the centre of spawning effort in the Bornholm Basin towards their nursery areas through temporally resolved three-dimensional idealized prey fields. Stomach content analyses of larval cod from the Bornholm Basin revealed calanoid copepod nauplii and early copepodite stages to be the preferred prey organisms. The results of the model runs indicate that larval cod changed from a nonlimited to a food-limited stage because of the strong decrease in abundance of the calanoid copepod Pseudocalanus elongatus during the last two decades. The modeling study revealed retention and dispersal from the main spawning ground to be a key process influencing larval survival. When P. elongatus was available in the prey fields, high cod larval survival rates occurred in spring and early summer. In contrast, when P. elongatus was not available, hatched larvae had only high survival probabilities later in the year or if they were transported into shallower coastal regions.

IntroductionProstate cancer is the most prevalent oncological disease among men in industrialised countries. Despite the high survival rates, treatments are often associated with adverse effects, including metabolic and cardiovascular complications, sexual dysfunction and, to a lesser extent, cognitive decline. This study was primarily designed to evaluate the trajectories of cognitive performance in patients with prostate cancer, and to quantify the impact of the disease and its treatments on the occurrence of cognitive decline.MethodsParticipants will be recruited from two main hospitals providing care to approximately half of the patients with prostate cancer in Northern Portugal (Portuguese Institute of Oncology of Porto and São João Hospital Centre), and will comprise a cohort of recently diagnosed patients with prostate cancer proposed for different treatment plans, including: (1) radical prostatectomy; (2) brachytherapy and/or radiotherapy; (3) radiotherapy in combination with androgen deprivation therapy and (4) androgen deprivation therapy (with or without chemotherapy). Recruitment began in February 2018 and is expected to continue until the first semester of 2021. Follow-up evaluations will be conducted at 1, 3, 5, 7 and 10 years. Sociodemographic, behavioural and clinical characteristics, anxiety and depression, health literacy, health status, quality of life, and sleep quality will be assessed. Blood pressure and anthropometrics will be measured, and a fasting blood sample will be collected. Participants’ cognitive performance will be evaluated before treatments and throughout follow-up (Montreal Cognitive Assessment and Cube Test as well as Brain on Track for remote monitoring). All participants suspected of cognitive impairment will undergo neuropsychological tests and clinical observation by a neurologist.Ethics and disseminationThe study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the hospitals involved. All participants will provide written informed consent, and study procedures will be developed to ensure data protection and confidentiality. Results will be disseminated through publication in peer-reviewed journals and presentation in scientific meetings.

This study examines the growth potential of the market leader and market challenger in Japan’s telecommunications services industry. We focus on Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) and KDDI, the market leader and challenger (respectively) in terms of sales revenue, total assets, and market share. Following finance literatures, we use higher values of price–earnings ratio (P/E) and market-to-book-value-of-equity ratio (MV/BV) as the indicators of growth potential. High growth firms have the potential to outperform the overall market over a significant period of time providing a good investment opportunity for retail and institutional investors. This study uses financial data of the NTT and KDDI from the period between 2001 and 2016 and applies several regression models to examine the growth potential of the market leader and market challenger in Japan’s telecommunications services industry. Using the P/E and MV/BV as indicators of growth potential, we show that the market challenger’s growth potential is significantly higher than that of the market leader, even after controlling for firm size, liquidity, profitability, leverage, cash flow, and age.

Abstract Chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) is a paradigm of precision medicine, being one of the first cancers to be treated with targeted therapy. This has revolutionised CML therapy and patient outcome, with high survival rates. However, this now means an ever-increasing number of patients are living with the disease on life-long tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapy, with most patients anticipated to have near normal life expectancy. Unfortunately, in a significant number of patients, TKIs are not curative. This low-level disease persistence suggests that despite a molecularly targeted therapeutic approach, there are BCR-ABL1-independent mechanisms exploited to sustain the survival of a small cell population of leukaemic stem cells (LSCs). In CML, LSCs display many features akin to haemopoietic stem cells, namely quiescence, self-renewal and the ability to produce mature progeny, this all occurs through intrinsic and extrinsic signals within the specialised microenvironment of the bone marrow (BM) niche. One important avenue of investigation in CML is how the disease highjacks the BM, thereby remodelling this microenvironment to create a niche, which enables LSC persistence and resistance to TKI treatment. In this review, we explore how changes in growth factor levels, in particular, the bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) and pro-inflammatory cytokines, impact on cell behaviour, extracellular matrix deposition and bone remodelling in CML. We also discuss the challenges in targeting LSCs and the potential of dual targeting using combination therapies against BMP receptors and BCR-ABL1.

This retrospective study evaluated the survival rate of short, sandblasted acid-etched surfaced implants with 6 and 8 mm lengths with at least 120 days of follow-up. Data concerning patient, implant and surgery characteristics were retrieved from clinical records. Sandblasted and acid-etched (SLA)-surfaced tissue-level 6 mm (TL6) or 8 mm (TL8) implants or bone-level tapered 8 mm (BLT8) implants were used. Absolute and relative frequency distributions were calculated for qualitative variables and mean values and standard deviations for quantitative variables. A Cox regression model was performed to verify whether type, length and/or width influence the implant survival. The cumulative implant survival rate was assessed by time-to-event analyses (Kaplan–Meier estimator). In all, 513 patients with a mean age of 58.00 ± 12.44 years received 1008 dental implants with a mean follow-up of 21.57 ± 10.77 months. Most implants (78.17%) presented a 4.1 mm diameter, and the most frequent indication was a partially edentulous arch (44.15%). The most frequent locations were the posterior mandible (53.97%) and the posterior maxilla (31.55%). No significant differences were found in survival rates between groups of type, length and width of implant with the cumulative rate being 97.7% ± 0.5%. Within the limitations of this study, the evaluated short implants are a predictable option with high survival rates during the follow-up without statistical differences between the appraised types, lengths and widths.
