Perceptions of ‘normal’ climate in Queensland, Australia (1924–34)

AbstractThe concept of ‘normal’ climatic conditions reflects the complexities of human understandings of the environment. Scholarship on settler societies has explored how culture, science and state imperatives combine to construct a notion of ‘normal’ climate. This study of the Callide Valley settlement (1924–34) in northern Australia, draws on government propaganda, farmers’ submissions to a 1934 government inquiry and meteorological data to reveal the discrepancy between rainfall reality and expectations. Promised fertile soil, plentiful water and an ideal climate by the government, new settlers flocked to the Callide Valley, many without farming experience or knowledge of the region’s subtropical climate. Drought and flood soon challenged the promises of a bountiful climate. These confused understandings of a normal climate continue today to shape agriculture in central Queensland.

This study provides the analysis of drought conditions of vegetation period in 1982-2014 year in two Lithuanian regions: Kaunas and Telšiai. To identify drought conditions the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) was applied. SPI was calculated using the long-term precipitation record of 1982–2014 with in-situ meteorological data. Calculation step of SPI was taken 1 month considering only vegetation period (May, June, July, August, September). The purpose of investigation was to evaluate the humidity/aridity of vegetation period and find out the probability of droughts occurrence under Lithuanian climatic conditions. It was found out that according SPI results droughts occurred in 14.5 % of all months in Kaunas region and in 15.8 % in Telšiai region. Wet periods in Kaunas region occurred in 15.8 %, and in Telšiai region occurrence of wet periods was – 18.8 % from all evaluated months. According SPI evaluation near normal were 69.7 % of total months during period of investigation in Kaunas and respectively – 65.5 % in Telšiai. The probability for extremely dry period under Lithuania climatic conditions are pretty low – 3.0 % in middle Lithuania and 2.4 % in western part of Lithuania.

Abstract The influences of climate on the retention capability of green roof have been widely discussed in existing literature. However, knowledge on how the retention capability of green roof is affected by the tropical climate is limited. This paper highlights the retention performance of the green roof situated in Kuching under hot-humid tropical climatic conditions. Using the green roof water balance modelling approach, this study simulated the hourly runoff generated from a virtual green roof from November 2012 to October 2013 based on past meteorological data. The result showed that the overall retention performance was satisfactory with a mean retention rate of 72.5% from 380 analysed rainfall events but reduced to 12.0% only for the events that potentially trigger the occurrence of flash flood. By performing the Spearman rank's correlation analysis, it was found that the rainfall depth and mean rainfall intensity, individually, had a strong negative correlation with event retention rate, suggesting that the retention rate increases with decreased rainfall depth. The expected direct relationship between retention rate and antecedent dry weather period was found to be event size dependent.

Abstract The objective of this study was to determine the mean duration and the interannual variability of phenological subperiods and total soybean development cycle for 11 sowing dates in the humid subtropical climate conditions of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Daily meteorological data were used from 1971 to 2017 obtained from the Pelotas agroclimatological station and from 1968 to 2017 from the main climatological station of Santa Maria. The soybean development simulation was performed considering three sets of cultivars of relative maturity groups between 5.9-6.8, 6.9-7.3 and 7.4-8.0, with intervals between the sowing dates of approximately 10 days, comprising September, 21 to December, 31. The data of phenological subperiods duration and total development cycle were subjected to the exploratory analysis BoxPlot, analysis of variance and mean comparison by the Scott-Knott test, with 5% of probability. The development cycle duration is greater in Pelotas than in Santa Maria. There was a decrease in soybean cycle duration from the first to the last sowing date for both locations. The R1-R5 subperiod duration is decreasing from October to December due to photoperiod reduction.

Abstract Since cellulitis is one of the most important factors for the prognosis of lymphedema, the prevention and prediction of cellulitis are considered to be critical in controlling lymphedema. We hypothesized that patients with lymphedema might show meteoropathy, as abdominal aortic aneurysm ruptures are considered to be influenced by climatic conditions, and the lymphatic system is one of the circulation systems. Thus, we aimed to determine if the onset of cellulitis in limbs affected by lymphedema is related to climatic conditions. We reviewed the clinical records of patients with lymphedema admitted for cellulitis at our institute between January 2007 and December 2017. We identified 40 patients, 25 of whom lived in the same area. We examined the association between the number of patient admissions according to season and meteorological data obtained from the Japan Meteorological Agency database. Thirteen of 25 patients were admitted in summer, whereas only one patient was admitted in winter. Both higher temperature and lower atmospheric pressure around the day of admission were associated with the occurrence of cellulitis. Lymphedema may be regarded as a meteoropathic disease, as climatic conditions were shown to be associated with cellulitis in limbs affected by lymphedema.

The bioclimatic well-being of individuals is associated with the environmental characteristics of where they live. Knowing the relationships between local and regional climatic variables as well as the physical characteristics of a given region and their implications on thermal comfort is important for identifying aspects of thermal sensation in the population. The aim of this study is to develop an empirical model of human thermal comfort based on subjective and individual environmental patterns observed in the city of Santa Maria, located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil (Subtropical climate). Meteorological data were collected by means of an automatic meteorological station installed in the city center, which contained sensors measuring global solar radiation, air temperature, globe temperature (via a grey globe thermometer), relative humidity and wind speed and direction. A total of 1720 people were also interviewed using a questionnaire adapted from the model recommended by ISO 10551. Linear regressions were performed to obtain the predictive model. The observed results proposed a new empirical model for subtropical climate, the Brazilian Subtropical Index (BSI), which was verified to be more than 79% accurate, with a coefficient of determination of 0.926 and an adjusted R2 value of 0.924.

The use of empirical agrometeorological models that can be adjusted to the climatic conditions of different regions has become increasingly necessary to improve water management in grain-producing municipalities. The aim of this work is to examine the correlation between various reference evapotranspiration (ETo) estimation methods and the standard FAO 56 Penman-Monteith method, as well as to determine correction factors, when necessary, for crop-producing municipalities in the northeast of Pará, during both the rainy and dry seasons. We compared simpler methods of ETo estimation to the FAO 56 Penman-Monteith method. For this purpose, meteorological data from Tracuateua, Bragança, Capitão Poço and Castanhal, provided by the National Institute of Meteorology (INMET), were used. The calibration of equations was performed through linear regression. The accuracy of different estimation methods was examined. The Turc, FAO 24 Blaney-Criddle and regression methods presented the best results for all statistical criteria; the Priestley-Taylor, Makkink and FAO 24 Radiation methods presented excellent results after calibration. The methods of Camargo and Hargreaves-Samani produced the worst results for all the criteria.

It is now more than a decade since John Gallagher and Ronald Robinson first challenged the conventional interpretations of nineteenth-century imperial history and employed the term “The Imperialism of Free Trade” to describe the “ever-extending and intensifying development of overseas regions” — a term which characterizes British imperial policy in the middle decades of the last century. The general validity of this thesis has been illustrated by reference to British policies in India in this period. There was the extensive program of railway construction, financed by British capital at favorable rates of interest guaranteed by the Government of India. There was the manipulation of the Indian tariff in response to pressure from the Lancashire cotton manufacturers. There was the cotton improvement program, the object of which was to relieve Lancashire's dependence on the United States as the major source of its raw cotton. In this case, the desired object was not achieved, despite considerable effort and expenditure sustained over more than a decade. But the approach of civil war in America revived interest in India as an alternative source of supply, notwithstanding the many difficulties that stood in the way. Indian cotton was raised on small holdings as a secondary crop every third or fourth year; its quality was poor; climatic conditions were uncertain; demand was irregular; communications between the cotton-producing areas and the ports were bad; and trade was hampered by lack of a contract law and a bankruptcy act. The Lancashire cotton manufacturers demanded energetic action from the state in overcoming these difficulties.

Preservation of biodiversity (interspecific, intraspecific) is one of the urgent tasks that requires a systematic, comprehensive, scientifically based approach. Engineering design of the bird life area, includes modeling, packaging the area and its effects on environment. For this purpose we design the procedure by finite element method for biological life of bird. A vivid example of restoration and preservation of biological diversity of fauna and flora should be considered the implementation of the environmental project "Regulation of the riverbed of the Syrdarya and the Northern Aral Sea”. The project was initiated by well-known Russian and Kazakh scientists with the support of the government of Kazakhstan and world financial institutions. The aim of the project is the construction of new and reconstruction of existing hydrological structures. The result of this project, among other things (improving the economic, social, environmental situation) is the restoration of biological diversity. The process of recovery is gradual, depends on many external factors and requires detailed study, scientific justification for individual periods and phases. Bird fauna is considered conservative enough in the choice of habitats and is an indicator of the restoration of biodiversity. This paper is devoted to keeping track of bird in the water spills of the Baskara canal (the main left-bank channel of the Syrdarya river) in the eastern part of the Kazalinsky district (Kazakhstan's Aral Sea area). During the surveys, 13 species of birds were recorded, which are representatives of 8 orders. The most part (77%) of registered birds belongs to the limnophilic group - the wetland birds.  Impoverished species composition is due to the climatic conditions of the accounting year, the lack of sufficient shelter, the isolation of the water body. Systematic, all-season bird monitoring is required.

AbstractPalaeoweathering profiles are widely represented in the Iberian meseta. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and analytical electron microscopy (AEM) were used to describe the mechanisms governing the processes involved in the formation of one of these weathering profiles developed over slates of the Iberian Hercynian Massif. Three well-differentiated weathering stages were distinguished, based upon well-defined mineralogical signatures characteristic of primary or secondary minerals. The lower stage is characterized by fresh green slates composed of Fe-chlorite, micas, quartz and feldspars. The soft slates represent an intermediate weathering stage. A confined environment has permitted the development of smectite from the different primary phyllosilicates, both by neoformation of montmorillonite and transformation into beidellite. In the upper part of the profile, the red slates are the most weathered. A tropical or subtropical climate has resulted in the formation of kaolinite and abundant iron oxides over several metres. The present study demonstrates that the three identified weathering stages were formed under the same climatic conditions. Such ‘toposequences’ are developed at the present time in tropical areas (Bocquier, 1971).

The influence of climatic conditions on the levels of fumonisins in maize grown in Serbia was studied over eight years (2008 to 2015), investigating the possible relationship between the levels of fumonisins contamination in maize in relation to registered weather/climatic conditions. Presence of these mycotoxins in maize after harvest was evaluated based on climatic conditions within two periods: 10 days before and 10 days after 50% silking. Categories of fumonisins levels were transformed into classes. Chi-square test for association was used in analysing relationships between results of fumonisins levels and calendar years. Mann-Whitney U-test was used to compare differences between meteorological data of two subsets in years with high and low fumonisins level. There was a statistically significant association between the fumonisins levels and calendar years χ2=247.954; (P<0.05). This study identified low precipitation and low humidity combined with high solar radiation as a critical parameter combination for elevated levels of fumonisins. The statistically significant difference in relation to some of the examined parameters suggests that maize in Serbian agro-climatic conditions is more susceptible to fungal colonisation, and subsequent fumonisin production in the period of 10 days before 50% silking.
