The number of data sources available for academic research on retirement economics and policy has increased rapidly in the past two decades. Data quality and comparability across studies have also improved considerably, with survey questionnaires progressively converging towards common ways of eliciting the same measurable concepts. Probability-based Internet panels have become a more accepted and recognized tool to obtain research data, allowing for fast, flexible, and cost-effective data collection compared to more traditional modes such as in-person and phone interviews. In an era of big data, academic research has also increasingly been able to access administrative records (e.g., Kostøl and Mogstad, 2014; Cesarini et al., 2016), private-sector financial records (e.g., Gelman et al., 2014), and administrative data married with surveys (Ameriks et al., 2020), to answer questions that could not be successfully tackled otherwise.

AbstractThe IUPAC centenary in 2019 is fast approaching, and this will naturally lead people to look back at the significant achievements of the organisation and its dedicated volunteers over the past one hundred years. Equally important, however, will be the need to look forward to the roles for IUPAC in its second century. This special issue of Chemistry International (CI) could well feature in that assessment, as technology in the digital age, and particularly the data that technology produces, will clearly be an essential tool for the future of chemistry as a discipline.

This article reviews recent developments in measuring education and skill that need to be taken into account in any new initiative to monitor social mobility. Over the past half-century, patterns of educational participation and attainment have become more heterogeneous, a trend that has been accompanied by increases in assessment and testing practices, and the availability of electronic data sources and other administrative records, including official school transcripts that are generally held indefinitely. This article describes the most promising approaches to measuring education and discusses some of the possible challenges for using the information to study social mobility. Measures of educational concepts fall along at least one of several dimensions: credentials earned, qualities of the schools attended, the amount and nature of curricular exposure, and the development and acquisition of skills. Selected data sources, with an emphasis on school transcripts and administrative records, and their possible uses are described.

This paper focuses on the characteristics of research data quality, and aims to cover the most important issues related to it, giving particular attention to its attributes and to data governance. The corporate word’s considerable interest in the quality of data is obvious in several thoughts and issues reported in business-related publications, even if there are apparent differences between values and approaches to data in corporate and in academic (research) environments. The paper also takes into consideration that addressing data quality would be unimaginable without considering big data.

Since the launch of Landsat-1 in 1972, the scientific domain of geo-information has been incrementally shaped through different periods, due to technology evolutions: in devices (satellites, UAV, IoT), in sensors (optical, radar, LiDAR), in software (GIS, WebGIS, 3D), and in communication (Big Data). Land Cover and Disaster Management remain the main big issues where these technologies are highly required. Data fusion methods and tools have been adapted progressively to new data sources, which are augmenting in volume, variety, and in quick accessibility. This Special Issue gives a snapshot of the current status of that adaptation, as well as looking at what challenges are coming soon.

This research on Manhaj Tafsir Fazlur Rahman aims to describe and describe the methods or approaches used by Fazlur Rahman in interpreting the Qur'an. This research was conducted through library research. The study is descriptive and analytical, that is, analytical in a historical and philosophical sense. Data concerning the methodological thinking of interpreting the Koran can be traced back to Rahman's writing (primary source). The research data is in the form of works by Fazlur Rahman in interpreting various Qur'an verses. Meanwhile, the data sources that will be explored in this paper are Rahman's interpretations, which are widely published in multiple books in Indonesia. The results of his research show that diversity in both the method (manhaj / tariqah), style (nau'), and approaches (alwan) used is something that cannot be avoided in a work of interpretation. Although interpretive works have appeared in modern times, their interpretation still follows classical and medieval patterns. For Fazrul Rahman, tafsir's essence is how an interpreter can create an authentic meaning (original meaning) from reading through the historical context of the past. He captures all moral aspects to contextualize meaning in the present with a new methodology.

We are now living in an era of multimedia data. The past decades have witnessed an unprecedented upsurge in “big data” in China. Mobile multimedia devices are becoming mainstream, promoting the conversion of big data technologies into practices. The deployment of big data provides people with great opportunities to deal with what were formerly great challenges. Against this background, research is ongoing to explore further possibilities in mobile multimedia developing. Mobile Multimedia Big Data Embedded Systems are transforming science, engineering, healthcare, medicine, finance, business, and ultimately our society itself. This special issue focuses on the state-of-the-art initiatives and the great promise in this field. We thank all of the authors who submitted papers for this special section. We are also highly appreciative of the reviewers who provided valuable review feedback on the submissions. The editor hopes that this special issue will attract researchers’ interest and contribute to further developments in this field.

The present article analyzes the technological advancement and innovations related to drilling operations. It covers the review of currently proven and emerging technologies that could mitigate the drilling operational deficiencies and instabilities that could hinder operational performance activities and the economic part of drilling development with great effort to minimize their environmental footprint. Drilling system design and operations are among the major aspects and cost-effective endeavors of the oil and gas industries, which are therefore technology dependent. They are also considered to be among the most expensive operations in the world, as they require huge expenses daily. Drilling success, depending on prevalent conditions, is a function of several general factors. These include the selection of the best technologies and tools, procedural optimization, concrete problem-solving, accurate prediction, and rapid decision-making. Consequently, any sorts of tools or advanced technologies that can improve the time-efficient operational and economic performance of drilling activities are essential and demanded. The paper provides a review of available technologies and developmental innovations based on both company-based and academic research-enabled drilling solutions over the past 5 years in the field of drilling systems and technological design. The paper further highlighted potential technologies that could be tapped in from other industries and could possibly be adopted by pushing the conventional boundaries of drilling operations.

The aim of this study was to examine two types of time lag related to IT innovations in Japan. The first is the time lag between newspaper articles and academic papers in the past. The second is the ongoing time lag with regard to the big data trend between the United States and Japan. This article explores a new analytical process based on two-dimensional maps proposed by Krinder et al. (2005) for visualizing and measuring time lags. After overviewing the big data trend in Japan, the author analyzed 2,910 newspaper articles and 550 academic papers published in Japan related to past innovations, as well as 734 newspaper articles from the United States and 173 from Japan related to the big data innovation. The results indicate that academic research for past trends lags business trends by 1-4 years. However, time lags in the big data trend could not be captured because of the difficulty predicting the point of inflection of S-shaped curves in an early stage of innovation. Accordingly, the author simulated future S-shaped curves to show the gap between the United States and Japan.

The purpose of this study was to identify the social phenomena of tattoo, which have been of constant interest in our society, through analysis of social networks collected from big data on what the social phenomena implied in keywords emphasized in newspaper articles over the past year. To this end, by analyzing keywords about tattoos that frequently appeared in newspaper articles, we could see what the main interests of social phenomena related to tattoos were. Data on tattoos were collected from newspaper articles over the past year and analyzed how they formed meaning regarding the relationship structure and centrality between the keywords at issue through social network analysis. These findings provide basic data on social discussions and policy directions related to tattoos in practice and discussions related to ways to improve them. This study is an extension from existing quantitative research by analyzing the social phenomena of tattoos through Bigdata and social network analysis. Apart from statistical surveys or subjective qualitative research, we have approached them with content analysis using big data and social network analysis. The conclusion of this study is as follows. First, as a result of analyzing the word cloud regarding tattoos, it was confirmed that “rose” and “300” were the most prominent, and there were keywords that could analyze various other social phenomena. Second, as a result of analysis by connection centrality, it was proved that the social interest and popularity of tattoos increased. Third, as a result of analysis by eigenvector centrality, the popularity of tattoos was proved. It objectified academic research by attempting research from a different perspective from the analysis of research trends and provided visualized research results of readers.
