The paper discusses issues related to the petrology of picrobasaltic melts forming lava flows on Lanzarote, Canary Islands. During ascientific and educational expedition on the aforementioned island, lava flows of picro basalt of the third phase of the 1731–1732 eruption were studied and tested. Preference was given to the well-preserved streams in the west and south of the island thatare accessible for direct study. Volcanogenic-sedimentary associations were identified in the studied outcropsand described, the structural and textural features of the flows were characterized, and samples with mantle rock xenoliths were taken for petrological reconstructions. New geochemical data onrocks and minerals are presented. It was established that the temperature of the initial melt was 1100–1180°C. Large harzburgitephenocrysts in picro basalt are xenocrysts formed as a result of melting and disintegration of mantle xenoliths.

This article develops an argument about what it defines as the ‘third phase of modernity’ and tackles, in a comparative manner, the cases of Latin America (especially Brazil), South Asia (especially India) and China. It tries to identify specific modernizing moves which imply individualizing comparisons as well as encompassing comparisons in relation to these areas and countries. It builds its argument from a few theoretical assumptions and moves in an inductive manner in order to dislocate the discussion of modernity from its strong referents in the West and the conceptual definitions that stem from this. The article tries also to connect the discussion of modernity to debates about development. It proposes a multidimensional approach and analyzes the main dimensions of contemporary modernity and modernizing moves in those regions and countries.

Abstract The study investigates the possibility of applying texture analysis (TA) for testing Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) therapies. The work is based on the Golden Retriever Muscular Dystrophy (GRMD) canine model, in which 3 phases of canine growth and/or dystrophy development are identified: the first phase (0–4 months of age), the second phase (from over 4 to 6 months), and the third phase (from over 6 months to death). Two differentiation problems are posed: (i) the first phase vs. the second phase and (ii) the second phase vs. the third phase. Textural features are derived from T2-weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) images. In total, 37 features provided by 8 different TA methods (statistical, filter-based, and model-based) have been tested. The work focuses on finding such textural features that evolve along with the dog’s growth. These features are indicated by means of statistical analyses and eliminated from further investigation, as they may disturb the correct assessment of response to treatment in dystrophy. The relative importance of each remaining feature is then assessed with the use of the Monte Carlo (MC) procedure. Furthermore, feature selection based on the MC procedure is employed to find the optimal subset of age-independent features. Finally, three classifiers are used for evaluating different sets of textural features: Adaptive Boosting (AB), back-propagation Neural Network (NN), and nonlinear Support Vector Machines (SVM). The best subsets of age-independent features ensure 80.0% and 78.5% of correctly identified phases of dystrophy progression, for the first (i) and second (ii) differentiation problem respectively.

Objective. To evaluate the effectiveness of a positive deviance strategy for the improvement of hand hygiene compliance in 2 adult step-down units.Design.A 9-month, controlled trial comparing the effect of positive deviance on compliance with hand hygiene.Setting.Two 20-bed step-down units at a tertiary care private hospital.Methods.The first phase of our study was a 3-month baseline period (from April to June 2008) in which hand hygiene episodes were counted by use of electronic handwashing counters. From July to September 2008 (ie, the second phase), a positive deviance strategy was implemented in the east unit; the west unit was the control unit. During the period from October to December 2008 (ie, the third phase), positive deviance was applied in both units.Results.During the first phase, there was no statistically significant difference between the 2 step-down units in the number of episodes of hand hygiene per 1,000 patient-days or in the incidence density of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) per 1,000 patient-days. During the second phase, there were 62,000 hand hygiene episodes per 1,000 patient-days in the east unit and 33,570 hand hygiene episodes per 1,000 patient-days in the west unit (P < .01). The incidence density of HAIs per 1,000 patient-days was 6.5 in the east unit and 12.7 in the west unit (P = .04). During the third phase, there was no statistically significant difference in hand hygiene episodes per 1,000 patient-days (P = .16) or in incidence density of HAIs per 1,000 patient-days.Conclusion.A positive deviance strategy yielded a significant improvement in hand hygiene, which was associated with a decrease in the overall incidence of HAIs.

Abstract The first of four phases observed in the eruption on the western coast of Lopevi was marked by explosive activity during which the old crater reopened and a new crater, referred to as the upper crater, was formed. A smoke avalanche carrying scoria, lapilli, and cinders spread subhorizontally and represented the second phase. In the third phase, four lava flows containing jagged, scoriaceous blocks 10-50 cm in diameter were emitted from the base of the upper crater, covering part of the deposits of the smoke avalanche. The fourth phase was marked by the opening of several new vents characterized by activity involving the emission of either gaseous jets, alternating smoke wreaths and loud explosions, or gaseous clouds and lava flows from lower craters accompanied by a decrease in the activity in the upper crater. Petrographic analysis of the lavas shows that they are andesitic basalts containing plagioclase and forsterite phenocrysts and plagioclase microlites. Petrogenic evidence shows that the rocks of this eruption resemble the series of alkalic olivine-bearing basalts, and in some cases possess characteristics similar to the tholeiitic series.

The purpose of this study is to investigate Muhammad Iqbal's position on Sufi thought and heritage, and to illuminate the factors that have helped to shape this position and its development. Three phases can be discerned: the first extends from the beginning to his return from Europe, in which he admired Persian Sufi poets, and showed some influence of Orientalist scholars on him. The second demonstrates independence of thought, where admiration is disciplined by the adoption of a selective, critical approach, where he built an awareness of the true nature of the relations between the East and the West, founded on West supremacy and colonialism. In the third phase Iqbal presents his own reformative conception of spiritual reconstruction derived from the Holy Qur'an and Prophetic Tradition.

What is an underground? Is it possible to embed this particular way of life into any definition? After all, even underground did not have the need to define itself at the beginning. The presented text represents a brief reflection of the development of underground in Czechoslovakia; attention is paid to the impulses from the West, which had a significant influence on the underground. The text focuses on the key events that influenced the underground. For example, the “Hairies (Vlasatci)” Action, which took place in 1966, and the State Security activity in Rudolfov in 1974. The event in Rudolfov was an imaginary landmark and led to the writing of a manifesto that came into history as the “Report on the Third Czech Musical Revival.”

In our society, the proportion of youth is higher than any other society. They are important in this regard. But the real question is whether his views, trends and likes and dislikes are different from other generations of society in political terms. What is the reason for the tendency to see youth as a separate class. That we borrow the principles of politics from the West, where the distinction of generations is more important factor in politics than the distinction of community or class. At one time, parties like the Labor Party and the Green Party have been standing mainly on the vote of the youth for some time. The second reason is that the image of the youth is based on the English-speaking youths living somewhere in the metros. We often consider him to be a symbol of youth. While in reality they are a very small part of our youth. And the third reason is that the part of change, revolution and the politics of change that had set the hopes of the youth are still there in our political understanding. The fact is that the youth class is not very different from the elderly or any other generation in terms of participation in politics, if different then it means that its participation is less than the other class because it is more concerned about education and employment. There is no fundamental difference between the vote of the youth and other generations in terms of voting or political choice. If there is a difference, then only in the sense that the parties who have come in the last 25-30 years have heard more about the youth, hence their choice is more. Older parties usually get little support from the youth. However, it is not related to its youth, because the information about that party is limited to certain people.

The seismoacoustical investigations was made in the western part of the Kerch strait (Azov sea) near Kamysh-Burun spit. The fracture zone with dislocated sedimentary rocks layers and buried erosional surface was revealed to the west of spit. Three seismofacial units was revealed to the east of spit. The first unit was modern sedimentary cover. The second ones has cross-bedding features and was, probably, the part of early generation of Kamysh-Burun spit, which lied to the east of its modern position. The lower border of the second unit is the erosional surface supposed of phanagorian age. The third unit is screened by acoustic shedows in large part.
