AbstractThis cross-sectional study aimed to observe number of marriages between relatives in São Francisco Valley municipalities and correlations between degrees of kinship and susceptibility to genetic diseases. Three hundred and nine (309) consanguineous couples were interviewed in five municipalities. The data were analyzed using SPSS (version 22), Chi-square testing, and the generalized estimating equation (GEE). In Pariconha-AL for first cousins, the results revealed significantly higher numbers of disabled children than for third cousins (p < 0.05). Of these, the prevalence for physical disability was significant (χ2 = 19.203, df = 4, p = 0.001). In the cities of Glória-BA (χ2 = 11.652, df = 3, p = 0.020) and OlhoD'água do Casado-AL (χ2 = 8.123, df = 4, p = 0.044), physical disabilities were also significantly higher in children from unions of first-degree cousins than for other degrees of kinship. Visual impairment was more significant in first-degree cousins in Glória-BA (χ2 = 14.206, df = 3 p = 0.007); yet among third-degree cousins, visual impairment in the municipality of Santa Brígida-BA was more prevalent (χ2 = 6.416, df = 2 p = 0.040). Inbreeding, as revealed in the evaluated cities, reinforces the hypothesis for developing genetic diseases.

ABSTRACT Objective To study whether lip prints show genetic inheritance or not Materials and methods The cross sectional study was conducted on 30 families in different parts of North India (Haryana) with a minimum family size of 3 i.e. father, mother and atleast one child below the age of 25 years and irrespective of their gender. The ethical permission was taken from the institute and the head of locality also. All individuals were healthy and free from genetic diseases. The lip prints of each subject were taken on a bond paper and studied using a magnifying lens by using Suzuki and Tsuchihashi classification. Results The most common lip print was found to be type I out of all samples. The chi-square test results showed that the relationship between the father's upper lip pattern and child's upper lip pattern in the first quadrant of the upper lip were statistically significant (at significance level of 5%). Further the Cramer's V (0.49) values obtained for the association also indicated a strong relationship between the upper lip patterns of father and child in the first quadrant. Similarly statistical analysis showed strong relationship between lip pattern of mother and child in lower lip i.e. third quadrant. Other quadrants did not show any significant association and relationship between child and parents. Conclusion The study shows that in fact lip prints do follow a hereditary pattern but they are individualistic, each possessing its own unique characteristics. Thus providing a promising tool for the biometric system and forensics and can replace the older methods for the same in future. Resemblance of lip patterns between parents and children to some extent inspite of being unique and individualistic throws an open area which can be explored for establishing paternity, being simple and inexpensive.

Background. The goal of this study is to examine utilization of early repeat colonoscopy ≤ 6 months after an index procedure. Methods. We identified persons having repeat colonoscopy ≤ 6 months following outpatient colonoscopy without prior colonoscopy ≤ 5 years or prior diagnosis of colorectal cancer (CRC). We modeled repeat colonoscopy using a generalized estimating equation with an exchangeable correlation structure to account for clustering of patients by endoscopist. Results. The population included 334,663 persons, 7,892 (2.36%) of whom had an early repeat colonoscopy within 6 months. Overall, endoscopist prior year colonoscopy volume was inversely related to repeat ≤ 6 months. Repeat colonoscopy ≤ 6 months varied by the clinical setting of the index colonoscopy (adjusted OR = 1.41 (95% CI 1.29–1.55)) at nonhospital facilities compared to teaching or community hospitals. Among those who had polypectomy or biopsy, the adjusted OR for early repeat ≤ 6 months was elevated among those whose index colonoscopy was at a nonhospital facility (OR 1.44, 95% CI 1.30–1.60), compared to those at a teaching hospital or community hospital. Conclusions. Repeat colonoscopy ≤ 6 months after an index procedure is associated with the clinical setting of the index colonoscopy.

Background: Leprosy is a neglected, chronic and infectious tropical disease, caused by Mycobacterium leprae. It presents with skin and peripheral nerves alterations, responsible for irreversible physical disabilities. Brazil is one of the main countries endemic for the disease, persisting as a public health problem; its position is the first in the world in terms of prevalence coefficient. Objectives: To analyze the magnitude and factors associated with activity limitation in new leprosy cases diagnosed in the reference center in northeastern Brazil. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study, carried out in a reference center located in the municipality of Juazeiro - Bahia, between January and June 2018, involving 50 people diagnosed with leprosy. Clinical and sociodemographic variables were collected in addition to the application of the SALSA scale (Screening of Activity Limitation and Safety Awareness) for the analysis of functional limitation. The data were structured using Microsoft Excel software and, for analysis, IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows was used. Logistic regression was used with the calculation of the Odds Ratio to identify the factors associated with functional limitation. A 95% confidence interval and a 5% significance level were adopted. Results: The presence of functional limitations was registered in 32% (n = 16) of the cases analyzed, especially female (56.3%), elderly (37.5%), low education (87.6%), dimorphic form (62.5%), multibacillary classification (75.0%) and degree 2 of physical disability (50.0%). Functional limitation was associated with: age group ≥ 45 years (OR 3.80; p = 0.047), multibacillary age (OR 4.28; p = 0.021) and OMP score ≥ 6 (OR 4.69; p = 0.041). 75% of individuals with limitations were aged ≥ 45 years and were multibacillary. Conclusions: The factors associated with functional limitation were age equal to or greater than 45 years, multibacillary classification and OMP score greater than or equal to six. Early diagnosis and timely treatment in the routine of health services can contribute to the prevention of physical disability and functional limitations.

Purpose The aims of this study were to characterize hearing symptoms, habits, and sound pressure levels (SPLs) of personal audio system (PAS) used by young adults; estimate the risk of developing hearing loss and assess whether instructions given to users led to behavioral changes; and propose recommendations for PAS users. Method A cross-sectional study was performed in 50 subjects with normal hearing. Procedures included questionnaire and measurement of PAS SPLs (real ear and manikin) through the users' own headphones and devices while they listened to four songs. After 1 year, 30 subjects answered questions about their usage habits. For the statistical analysis, one-way analysis of variance, Tukey's post hoc test, Lin and Spearman coefficients, the chi-square test, and logistic regression were used. Results Most subjects listened to music every day, usually in noisy environments. Sixty percent of the subjects reported hearing symptoms after using a PAS. Substantial variability in the equivalent music listening level (Leq) was noted ( M = 84.7 dBA; min = 65.1 dBA, max = 97.5 dBA). A significant difference was found only in the 4-kHz band when comparing the real-ear and manikin techniques. Based on the Leq, 38% of the individuals exceeded the maximum daily time allowance. Comparison of the subjects according to the maximum allowed daily exposure time revealed a higher number of hearing complaints from people with greater exposure. After 1 year, 43% of the subjects reduced their usage time, and 70% reduced the volume. A volume not exceeding 80% was recommended, and at this volume, the maximum usage time should be 160 min. Conclusions The habit of listening to music at high intensities on a daily basis seems to cause hearing symptoms, even in individuals with normal hearing. The real-ear and manikin techniques produced similar results. Providing instructions on this topic combined with measuring PAS SPLs may be an appropriate strategy for raising the awareness of people who are at risk.
