Abstract Drawing on theoretical approaches to personal/group behaviour, and informed by Michael Hoey’s priming theory, this paper presents a corpus-assisted discourse study of European Parliament interventions from 2004 to 2011. The study aims to identify the group in the self and the various selves in the individual. For the analysis, three corpora from the European Comparable and Parallel Corpus Archive are explored: EP_EN (with EP interventions: 26,959,446 tokens), HC (with House of Commons interventions: 70,567,728), and SandD_david_martin (with member of European Parliament – MEP – David Martin’s interventions: 116,781). The main tool of analysis is the keyword, as generated by WordSmith 7.0. The analysis proceeds in three stages: stage 1, where the EP_EN and HC wordlists are compared, resulting in EP key priming; stage 2, where the SandD_david_martin and HC wordlists are compared, exposing David Martin’s idiosyncratic productions; and stage 3, where the EP_EN and SandD_david_martin keyword lists are manually compared, leading to the identification of EP priming in David Martin’s interventions.

The article presents the results of theoretical analysis of scientific approaches to the self-efficacy problem study of the individual in general and the social services specialist, in particular. The research stated the ambiguity of the interpretation of the concept of “self-efficacy” and, at the same time, the role of self-efficacy in successful professional activity. We identified the main approaches to the study of the self-efficacy problem study of the individual and related concepts, which are: socio-cognitive psychoanalytic behavioural; personal and activity; humanistic; subjective; effective; competence; resource, acmeological approach, etc. We proposed the acmeological approach as a basis in the context of the study of the self-efficacy problems, and its development, within which self-efficacy should be considered as an essential factor in achieving professional social specialists’ “acme”. It is shown that self-efficacy should be studied because of the possibility of its development in specially organized psychological training and socio-psychological support of specialists’ self-efficacy, their beliefs, belief in their ability to implement activities, evaluation of their effectiveness and expectations for self-realization, and professional activity.


The article analyzes the phenomenon of trust in risky societies by the example of hitchhiking as a practice of free travel on non-scheduled transport. It is emphasized that trust is the fundamental component of the actualization of the hitchhiking as a sociocultural phenomenon and practice, alternative to other types of spatial mobility. The processes of the emergence and reproduction of interpersonal trust in risk societies are investigated. Attention is paid to the interdependence of personified trust and trust to social institutions. Theoretical approaches to the study of risk and trust, presented in the works of such researchers as U. Beck, A. Giddens, N. Luhmann, P. Bourdieu, are reviewed. The characteristic is given to the car as to the main tool for the implementation of hitchhiking practices. In the modern world, it has both practical and symbolic functions: spatial movement and maintaining of the social status of the individual. The historical experience of developing hitchhiking at the state level and the attempts of its institutionalization are analyzed. An example of two countries (USSR, FRG) strategies shows that such experience was quite successful. Attention is focused on hitchhiking coverage in the media, which forming a negative discourse about this phenomenon. The role of hitchhiking in the formation of interpersonal trust is considered. It is demonstrated that hitchhiking helps to build a positive image of the “other”, and also creates a situation in which trust becomes a core component of social relations. Without this component such relations are impossible. The conclusion is made that the process of institutionalization of the hitchhiking as a well-established sociocultural practice can contribute to the social consolidation of modern Ukrainian society.

Developement of computer technology provides much improvements on electron microscopy, such as simulation of images, reconstruction of images and automatic controll of microscopes (auto-focussing and auto-correction of astigmatism) and design of electron microscope lenses by using a finite element method (FEM). In this investigation, procedures for simulating the optical properties of objective lenses of HREM and the characteristics of the new lens for HREM at 200 kV are described.The process for designing the objective lens is divided into three stages. Stage 1 is the process for estimating the optical properties of the lens. Firstly, calculation by FEM is made for simulating the axial magnetic field distributions Bzc of the lens. Secondly, electron ray trajectory is numerically calculated by using Bzc. And lastly, using Bzc and ray trajectory, spherical and chromatic aberration coefficients Cs and Cc are numerically calculated. Above calculations are repeated by changing the shape of lens until! to find an optimum aberration coefficients.

This paper argues that the rise of what is commonly termed "personal religion" during the Classic-Hellenistic period is not the result of an inner need or even quality of the self, as often argued by those who see in ancient Greece foreshadowing of Christianity, but rather was the result of social, economic, and political conditions that made it possible for Hellenistic Greeks to redefine the perception of the individual and its relationship to others.

With a conscious attempt to contribute to contemporary discussions in mad/trans/queer/monster studies, the monograph approaches complex postmodern theories and contextualizes them from an autoethnographic methodological perspective. As the self-explanatory subtitle reads, the book introduces several topics as revelatory fields for the author’s self-exploration at the moment of an intense epistemological and ontological crisis. Reflexively written, it does not solely focus on a personal experience, as it also aims at bridging the gap between the individual and the collective in times of global uncertainty. There are no solid outcomes defined; nevertheless, the narrative points to a certain—more fluid—way out. Through introducing alternative ways of hermeneutics and meaning-making, the book offers a synthesis of postmodern philosophy and therapy, evolutionary astrology as a symbolic language, embodied inquiry, and Buddhist thought that together represent a critical attempt to challenge the pathologizing discursive practices of modern disciplines during the neoliberal capitalist era.

The book’s epilogue explores the place of musical portraiture in the context of posthumous depictions of the deceased, and in relation to the so-called posthuman condition, which describes contemporary changes in the relationship of the individual with such aspects of life as technology and the body. It first examines Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo to view how Bernard Herrmann’s score relates to issues of portraiture and the depiction of the identity of the deceased. It then considers the work of cyborg composer-artist Neil Harbisson, who has aimed, through the use of new capabilities of hybridity between the body and technology, to convey something akin to visual likeness in his series of Sound Portraits. The epilogue shows how an examination of contemporary views of posthumous and posthuman identities helps to illuminate the ways music represents the self throughout the genre of musical portraiture.

Everyone can imagine their future self, even very young children, and this future self is usually positive and education-linked. To make progress toward an aspired future or away from a feared future requires people to plan and take action. Unfortunately, most people often start too late and commit minimal effort to ineffective strategies that lead their attention elsewhere. As a result, their high hopes and earnest resolutions often fall short. In Pathways to Success Through Identity-Based Motivation Daphna Oyserman focuses on situational constraints and affordances that trigger or impede taking action. Focusing on when the future-self matters and how to reduce the shortfall between the self that one aspires to become and the outcomes that one actually attains, Oyserman introduces the reader to the core theoretical framework of identity-based motivation (IBM) theory. IBM theory is the prediction that people prefer to act in identity-congruent ways but that the identity-to-behavior link is opaque for a number of reasons (the future feels far away, difficulty of working on goals is misinterpreted, and strategies for attaining goals do not feel identity-congruent). Oyserman's book goes on to also include the stakes and how the importance of education comes into play as it improves the lives of the individual, their family, and their society. The framework of IBM theory and how to achieve it is broken down into three parts: how to translate identity-based motivation into a practical intervention, an outline of the intervention, and empirical evidence that it works. In addition, the book also includes an implementation manual and fidelity measures for educators utilizing this book to intervene for the improvement of academic outcomes.

This chapter details the vicissitudes of race and poverty shaped J. W. Green’s upbringing in the Deep South as well as his adjustment to urban living as an adult. His lack of education, employment opportunity, and personal empowerment led to a “life on the streets.” Stoic faith saw him through a life and death in poverty. Mr. Green teaches us that everyone comes to this phase of life with strengths to cull from their cultural and spiritual beliefs. Mr. Green also teaches us that dignified dying does not require the unfettered exercise of personal autonomy, although a deep and abiding respect for the self-worth of the individual is necessary.

AbstractThis article discusses how in Howard Barker’s recent work the idea of the subject’s crisis hinges on the introduction of an impersonal or transpersonal life force that persists beyond human agency. The article considers Barker’s metaphorical treatment of the images of land and stone and their interrelationship with the human body, where the notion of subjective crisis results from an awareness of objective forces that transcend the self. In “Immense Kiss” (2018) and “Critique of Pure Feeling” (2018), the idea of crisis, whilst still dominant, seems to lose its intermittent character of singular rupture and reveals itself as a permanent force of dissolution and reification. In these plays, the evocation of nonhuman nature in the love relationships between young men and elderly women affirms the existence of something that goes beyond the individual, which Barker approaches with a late-style poetic sensibility.

Abstract Objectives: This exercise aimed to validate New Taipei City’s strategic plan for a city lockdown in response to COVID-19. The main goal of all solutions was the principle of “reducing citizen activity and strengthening government control”. Methods: We created a suitable exercise, and creating 15 hypothetical situations for three stages. All participating units designed and proposed policy plans and execution protocols according to each situation. Results: In the course of the exercise, many existing policies and execution protocols were validated to address. Situations occurring in Stage 1, when the epidemic was spreading to the point of lockdown preparations, approaches to curb the continued spread of the epidemic in Stage 2, and returning to work after the epidemic is controlled and lockdown is lifted in Stage 3. Twenty response units participated in the exercise. Although favourable outcomes were obtained, the evaluators provided comments suggesting further improvements. Conclusions: Our exercise demonstrated a successful example to help policy making and revision in a large city over 4 million population during COVID-19 pandemic. It also enhanced participants’ subject knowledge and familiarity with the implementation of a city lockdown. For locations intending to go into lockdown, similar tabletop exercises are an effective verification option.
