Abstract Technology is one factor in increasing agricultural production capacity. The use of new technologies will increase the use of inputs, making it possible to achieve production and farm efficiency. The jajar legowo (double row) system is a technological engineering to obtain a plant population of more than 160,000 per hectare. The implementation of Jajar Legowo in addition to increasing the cropping population, is also able to increase the smooth circulation of sunlight and air around the pingir plants so that the plants can photosynthesize better. Assistance in the application of engineering technology for the legowo row 2: 1 system was carried out in Panrannuangku sub-district, Polut sub-district, Takalar district. The technology engineering of the legowo row 2: 1 system is supported by other technologies that are applied through pilot farming models (demfarm) at strategic locations in the development area that have fairly good access, which can be seen by the community in the assisted area. The selection of the demfarm location is determined together with the farmer groups, field officers / PLL and stakeholders involved so that it can be ascertained that the pilot farming model can represent the conditions of the development area to be built. The results of the assistance in the area of rice farming in irrigated rice fields in Takalar Regency, South Sulawesi, show that the development of the rice crop area has a large enough opportunity to be developed with the support of legowo row 2: 1 technology engineering and institutional innovation. The results of the assistance for the paddy farming area with a 2: 1 legowo row technology engineering planting system in the irrigated rice fields of Takalar Regency also provide understanding to the relevant agencies starting from the planned mentoring model to the implementation stages. The rice technology demfarm with the legowo row system technology engineering 2: 1 showed an increase in yield from 4-5 tonnes per ha (local productivity) to 7-8 tonnes per ha.

As an effort to overcome problems in rice cultivation system, it is necessary to use new technologies and innovations. This study aims to determine the physical and nutritional quality of grain and milled rice from 2 varieties of rice using several planting systems. The research was conducted using a Completely Randomized Design of factorial pattern, consisting of 2 factors with 3 replications. The factors were: a) Planting system (S1 = Cubic S2 = Double row 2: 1, and S3 = Twin seed) and b) Rice varieties (V1 = Ciherang; V2 = Inpari 10). The observation parameters include: physical quality of grain, rice milled quality, physical quality of rice and rice nutrition. The results showed that the cubic planting system produced a higher empty grains than the double row and twin seed planting system. The twin seed planting system, yielding lime green grains and yellow broken grains lower than other planting systems, both on rice varieties of Ciherang and Inpari 10. Grains from Ciherang variety had a thinner shell and a higher hardness level of rice compared to grain of Inpari 10 variety, resulting in higher milled rice and head rice, but lower in broken rice and rice groats contents. It can be concluded that: a) the physical quality of rice was not affected by the planting system, but it was significantly affected by the rice varieties; b) the planting system and rice varieties used in this study did not have significant effect on the nutritional quality of the rice produced.

Abstract The Global Yield Gap Atlas (GYGA) is an international project that addresses global food production capacity in the form of yield gaps (Yg). The GYGA project is unique in employing its original Climate Zonation Scheme (CZS) composed of three indexed factors, i.e. Growing Degree Days (GDD) related to temperature, Aridity Index (AI) related to available water and Temperature Seasonality (TS) related to annual temperature range, creating 300 Climate Zones (CZs) theoretically across the globe. In the present study, the GYGA CZs were identified for Japan on a municipality basis and analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed on irrigated rice yield data sets, equating to actual yields (Ya) in the GYGA context, from long-term government statistics. The ANOVA was conducted for the data sets over two decades between 1994 and 2016 by assigning the GDD score of 6 levels and the TS score of 2 levels as fixed factors. Significant interactions with respect to Ya were observed between GDD score and TS score for 13 years out of 21 years implying the existence of favourable combinations of the GDD score and the TS score for rice cultivation. The implication was also supported by the observation with Yg. The lower values of coefficient of variance obtained from the CZs characterized by medium GDD scores indicated the stability over time of rice yields in these areas. These findings suggest a possibility that the GYGA-CZS can be recognized as a tool suitable to identify favourable CZs for growing crops.

ALS-inhibiting herbicides usually provide adequate weed control in irrigated rice fields. After consecutive years of use, the Cyperaceae species, globe fringerush (Fimbristylis miliacea) began to show resistance to ALS (acetolactate synthase) inhibitors. Globe fringerush is one of the most problematic herbicide-resistant weeds in irrigated rice in the state of Santa Catarina in the South of Brazil. The objective of this research was to examine cross resistance of globe fringerush to ALS inhibitors, under field conditions. Two experiments were conducted in a rice field naturally infested with ALS-resistant globe fringerush in Santa Catarina, in the 2008/09 and 2009/10 cropping seasons. The experimental units were arranged in randomized complete block design, with five replicates, consisting of two factors (herbicide and dose) in a 4 x 5 factorial arrangement. ALS herbicides included bispyribac-sodium, ethoxysulfuron, pyrazosulfuron-ethyl and penoxsulam. Six-leaf globe fringerush was sprayed with herbicide doses of 0, 0.5, 1, 2 and 4X the recommended doses in a spray volume of 200 L ha-1. The number of rice culm, filled and sterile grains, plant height, dry shoot biomass and grain yield were recorded. Globe fringerush control was evaluated 28 and 70 days after herbicide application (DAA); shoots were harvested at 13 weeks after herbicide application and dry weight recorded. Competition with globe fringerush reduced the number of culm and rice grain yield. The globe fringerush biotype in this field was resistant to all ALS herbicides tested. Penoxsulam had the highest level of activity among treatments at 28 and 70 DAA, but the control level was only 50% and 42%, respectively, in the second year of assessment. This was not enough to prevent rice yield loss. Alternative herbicides and weed control strategies are necessary to avoid yield losses in rice fields infested with ALS-resistant biotypes of globe fringerush.

A laboratory experiment was conducted in Soil Science Division of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) during 2010-11 aimed to determine the effects of different industrial effluents on some soil chemical properties under long-term industrial wastewater irrigated rice field. Effluents irrigation created some differences in soil pH, electrical conductivity and organic carbon. The pH in all soil depth was higher with wastewater irrigated rice field. Irrigation with wastewater increased in all the effluents irrigated rice fields; the electrical conductivity (EC) was remarkable higher with  all soil depth than the control field. In all the rice fields soil (Control + effluents irrigated fields), the organic carbon content (%) started to decrease sharply with the increase in soil depth. Organic carbon content was slightly higher with wastewater irrigated rice soils. Exchangeable cations (Ca, Mg, K and Na), trace elements (Zn, Fe, Mn and Cu) and heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cr and Ni) were increased through irrigation with wastewater in rice–rice cropping pattern.

The article is devoted to the study of Ukraine’s European integration course, a complex and multilevel process. It is established that the vector of European integration provides Ukraine with ample opportunities to attract foreign investment and new technologies, increase the technological level of production and increase the competitiveness of domestic producers in the domestic market, the EU market and world markets. It is established that most domestic enterprises are acutely short of qualified labor resources, innovation is absent or at a low level and is financed only by own funds of enterprises, there is no possibility to attract available financial resources, and all this complicates modernization of production facilities and bringing Ukrainian producers to compliance with European market standards. The article analyzes the change in the volume of export-import operations, profitability, and development of capital investments and innovation of domestic enterprises. It was found that the dynamics and volume of capital investment have positive trends, but a comparative analysis of the dynamics of growth of profitability and capitalization of production capacity found that in the latter Ukrainian enterprises are highly dependent on borrowed capital, due to significant limitations of their own reserves. In the current conditions of economic European integration, Ukrainian enterprises face a number of barriers that prevent them from fully entering and operating effectively in the European market. At the state level, it is political and economic instability, imperfection of the legislative field, high cost of credit resources, which leads to low innovation potential, shortage of qualified personnel and funds for modernization of existing assets and technological renewal. The strategic task of Ukraine should be the state policy aimed at supporting domestic enterprises and increasing their competitiveness in the form of comprehensive measures aimed at providing available credit resources for domestic producers, development of their innovative activity, promotion of the transfer of new technologies, which in turn will be to promote the technological level of Ukrainian enterprises and increase the level of competitiveness of goods and world markets.

Root-knot nematodes (RKN) cause important production losses of rice (Oryza sativa L.) in the world. Together with Meloidogyne graminicola Golden and Birchfield 1965, M. oryzae Maas, Sanders and Dede, 1978 and M. salasi López, 1984 have been causing damages in irrigated rice fields in Central and South America. In addition, six other RKN species may occur in rice fields in other regions of the world. Correct identification of Meloidogyne spp. is difficult but essential for the management of rice RKNs. The objective of this study was to develop some species-specific molecular markers for the diagnosis of South American RKN rice-related species. Isozyme phenotypes indicated the occurrence of some RKN species in the Brazilian samples, namely M. graminicola, M. oryzae, M. javanica, and two cryptic species designated as Meloidogyne sp. 2 and Meloidogyne sp. 3. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis of 16 isolates revealed interspecific genetic polymorphism between Meloidogyne spp., but isolates belonging to the same species (i.e., sharing the same esterase phenotype) always clustered together, whatever the species considered. Specific SCAR markers of 230, 120, and 160 bp were developed for M. graminicola, M. oryzae, and M. salasi, respectively. These SCAR markers may be potential molecular tools for application in routine diagnostic procedures subject to their validation with other rice RKN field populations in the world.

This present study is intended to explore the phenomenon of the practice of functionally converting the irrigated rice fields in South Denpasar District. The present study focuses on the process of functionally converting the irrigated rice fields, the ideology leading to the phenomenon, and its implication on the local people. The data were collected through observation, in-depth interview and documentary analysis. The data were analyzed using the theory of hegemony, the theory of social practice and some other theories which were used eclectically based on the problems analyzed. The result of the study shows that the functional conversion of the irrigated rice fields resulted from the farmers’ marginalized socio-cultural structure. The process started from the government’s hegemony. The government treated the farmers as the subaltern. Then the dominated farmers got trapped by fatalism and pragmatism. The entrepreneur and government strengthen their hegemony. Then they negotiated with the local government such as the traditional village ‘desa pakraman’ and the administrative village ‘desa dinas’ and the land owners as individuals. The farmers were too weak to resist; they failed as they did not have the capital needed for that. Such a condition could not be separated from the capitalistic ideology as the government and entrepreneur collaborated to legitimate the converting process. In addition, the local people were also trapped by the consumptive way of life. As a result, they considered that functionally converting their irrigated rice fields was a proper solution. That affected the infrastructural order. Their infrastructural order changed. Their social structure also shifted from communalism into individualism. Their ideological, legal, governmental, family and religious superstructures changed as well, causing the South Denpasar community to be getting far from the agrarian cultural root which used to be their initial characteristic.
