Abstract Duplex steel is an austenitic-femtic steel alloy commonly used in the offshore and subsea oil and gas industry. Duplex steel provides a unique combination of good mechanical properties and corrosion resistance in sweet and sour hydrocarbon environment, as well as in seawater. However, the combination of tensile loading, post-weld residual stresses, cathodic protection and other factors related to subsea implementation significantly increase the probability of hydrogen induced stress cracking (HISC). This paper aims to find a relationship between the formation of residual stresses and the imperfection of the welding process carried out on Duplex steel in extremely cold conditions. Based on a finite element (FE) welding transient simulation from a thermal perspective, the correlation between the welding parameters and heat distribution is established and analysed when the welding takes place in the cold arctic conditions. Pearson parameter correlation analysis method will be used to investigate the impact of extreme ambient temperatures on the welding process. The results and conclusions provide a solid foundation for welding process optimization in connection with HISC.

Abstract The combination of high strength and corrosion resistance of duplex stainless steels (DSSs) has promoted their use in subsea environments, particularly for the oil and gas industry. However, in the past 20 years, costly in-service failures of DSS components have frequently been encountered, most of which were attributed to hydrogen induced stress cracking (HISC). This cracking mechanism occurs once a susceptible microstructure coexists with critical levels of hydrogen and stress. In subsea environments, the use of cathodic protection (CP) is a source of hydrogen and the critical stress levels can be reached locally by operation and residual stresses generated during the manufacturing and installation processes. In order to prevent HISC failures, the microstructure, sources of hydrogen and stress levels have to be determined and controlled. An important factor contributing to the total stress experienced by a welded component is the residual stresses induced by welding. In a previous research projects conducted at TWI, residual stresses were measured in a full-scale girth weld between a DSS flange and pipe which had been in service, subsea, for 12 years. This follow-on work, on the same component, tested a number of small-scale cross-weld specimens, under CP to evaluate resistance to HISC of the weld. The observations showed that the cross-weld specimens exhibited superior resistance to HISC than that of the all-parent pipe and flange specimens. This was unexpected, and it was thought that this could potentially be explained by the influence of any compressive residual stresses remained in the small-scale test specimens used for the environmental testing programme. The present work provides the residual stress measurements in small-scale cross-weld specimens, using the neutron diffraction technique, and attempts to explain the relationship between the HISC testing results and residual stresses measured.

The article is devoted to the consideration of geopolitical challenges for the analysis of geoenvironmental risks (GERs) in the hydrocarbon development of the Arctic territory. Geopolitical risks (GPRs), like GERs, can be transformed into opposite external environment factors of oil and gas industry facilities in the form of additional opportunities or threats, which the authors identify in detail for each type of risk. This is necessary for further development of methodological base of expert methods for GER management in the context of the implementational proposed two-stage model of the GER analysis taking to account GPR for the improvement of effectiveness making decisions to ensure optimal operation of the facility oil and gas industry and minimize the impact on the environment in the geopolitical conditions of the Arctic.The authors declare no conflict of interest

An article presents a review of current standards and guidelines in the field welding fabrication requirements for wind energy structures in arctic conditions. Extreme climatic conditions, such as Arctic, have a strong influence on the requirements for wind turbines structural characteristics, materials and fabrication methods. Special attention has to be paid for selecting steels with suitable mechanical properties, processing methods and delivery conditions. Additionally, it is highly important to select proper welding process and welding parameters, so that the structural integrity and reliable operation can be achieved.

The final afternoon of the 2020 ATCE saw a wide-ranging virtual special session that covered an important but often overlooked facet of the unfolding digitalization revolution. While the rising wave of digital technology usually has been associated with production optimization and cost savings, panelists emphasized that it can also positively influence the global perception of the industry and enhance the lives of its employees. Chaired by Weatherford’s Dimitrios Pirovolou and moderated by John Clegg, J.M. Clegg Ltd., the session, “The Impact of Digital Technologies on Upstream Operations To Improve Stakeholder Perception, Business Models, and Work-Life Balance,” highlighted expertise taken from professionals across the industry. Panelists included petroleum engineering professor Linda Battalora and graduate research assistant Kirt McKenna, both from the Colorado School of Mines; former SPE President Darcy Spady of Carbon Connect International; and Dirk McDermott of Altira Group, an industry-centered venture-capital company. Battalora described the complex ways in which digital technology and the goal of sustainability might interact, highlighting recent SPE and other industry initiatives such as the GAIA Sustainability Program and reviewing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). McKenna, representing the perspective of the Millennial generation, described the importance of “agile development,” in which the industry uses new techniques not only to improve production but also to manage its employees in a way that heightens engagement while reducing greenhouse-gas emissions. Addressing the fact that greater commitment will be required to remove the “tougher two-thirds” of the world’s hydrocarbons that remain unexploited, Spady explained that digital sophistication will allow heightened productivity for professionals without a sacrifice in quality of life. Finally, McDermott stressed the importance of acknowledging that the industry often has not rewarded shareholders adequately, but pointed to growing digital components of oil and gas portfolios as an encouraging sign. After the initial presentations, Clegg moderated a discussion of questions sourced from the virtual audience. While the questions spanned a range of concerns, three central themes included the pursuit of sustainability, with an emphasis on carbon capture; the shape that future work environments might take; and how digital technologies power industry innovation and thus affect public perception. In addressing the first of these, Battalora identified major projects involving society-wide stakeholder involvement in pursuit of a regenerative “circular economy” model, such as Scotland’s Zero Waste Plan, while McKenna cited the positives of CO2-injection approaches, which he said would involve “partnering with the world” to achieve both economic and sustainability goals. While recognizing the importance of the UN SDGs in providing a global template for sustainability, McDermott said that the industry must address the fact that many investors fear rigid guidelines, which to them can represent limitations for growth or worse.

The implementation of plastic details in various constructions enables to reduce the prime cost and labor intensity of machine and device manufacturing, decrease the weight of design and improve their quality and reliability at the same time. The studies were carried out with the aim of labor productivity increase and substitution of colored and black metals with plastic masses. For this purpose, the details with certain characteristics were selected for further implementation of developed technological process in oil-gas industry. The paper investigates the impact of cylinder and compression mold temperature on the quality parameters (shrinkage and hardness) of plastic details in oil-field equipment. The accessible boundaries of quality indicators of the details operated in the equipment of exploration, drilling and exploitation of oil and gas industry are studied in a wide range of mode parameters. The mathematic dependences between quality parameters (shrinkage and hardness) of the details on casting temperature are specified.

The article discusses issues related to the impact of climate change on the objects of the oil and gas industry. The main trends in climate change on a global and regional (on the territory of Russian Federation) scale are outlined. Possible approaches to the identification and assessment of climate risks are discussed. The role of climatic risks as physical factors at various stages of development and implementation of oil and gas projects is shown. Based on the example of oil and gas facilities in the Tomsk region, a qualitative assessment of the level of potential risk from a weather and climatic perspective is given. Approaches to creating a risk management and adaptation system to climate change are presented.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the agility of oil and gas value chains in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and to understand the impact of implementing supply disruption (SD) strategies, outsourcing strategies (OS) and management strategies (MS) on oil and gas value chain agility (VCA). The results can support the oil and gas industry across the UAE to build resilience in the value chain. Design/methodology/approach The research design consists of a comprehensive literature review, followed by questionnaire-based survey responses of 106 participants and comprehensive statistical analysis, thus validate the developed theoretical framework and contribute to both practical and methodological approaches. Findings The findings indicate that oil and gas value chain in the UAE has moderate a significant degree of SD, when OS in place that are synchronized with the overall MS. Among the hypotheses developed, two were accepted thus warranting both SD strategies (r=+0.432) and MS (r= +0.457) found to have a positive moderate effect on VCA. The third hypothesis was rejected by revealing OS (r=+0.387) found to have a positive moderate relationship with VCA. Therefore, implementation of all three strategies has a positive moderate effect on the agility of the value chain and, therefore, supports to sustain competitive position. Research limitations/implications Some of the limitations of this research include the geographic coverage of the study region and other methodological limitation. Practical implications The research provides guidance for oil and gas supply chain managers to better understand the critical factors that impact and determine VCA. The paper also describes relevant strategies that should be taken into consideration by these managers in order to build their agile value chains. Social implications The research contributes to the social dimensions of supply chain sustainability of how resilient is the oil and gas value chain during uncertain conditions, so that it can respond to uncertain changes in order to contribute to corporate social responsibility. Originality/value This research is the first of its kind in the UAE region to assess the link between dimensions of agile value chain, OS, SD strategies and MS primarily from the Emirates of Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Since the beginning of the 19th century, we have assisted major proliferation of the oil and gas industry. This phenomenon of exponential growth is due to the fact that oil companies hold the world’s oil monopoly on the extraction, processing and commercialization. Therefore, as being one of the most influential sectors in the world, is crucial to strictly regulate how oil and gas contracts concerns the potential environmental and social impacts arising from the conduct of petroleum operations and how such behavior affects the human rights. As a matter of fact, the social issues field is an emerging area, and despite such importance, oil contracts do not often deal with them in great detail, corresponding to an actual emptiness of the human rights provisions. In terms of responsibly, oil companies, have an inalienable obligation to ensure that their actions do not violate human rights or contribute for their violation. This study aims to trace a detailed analysis of the impact of the oil and gas agreements in human rights. In order to fully comprehend the deep effects of this industry, we will examine, in detail, numerous of published oil and gas agreements, as well as, decode which are the real standards and practices accepted by this industry. We will use a deductive and speculative reasoning. We will try to demonstrate how incipient and short protection is given to human rights and what responsible conducts must urgently be developed.

This paper considers the impacts and trends of ICTs on core sectors of the Nigerian economy. Three core industry sectors of the Nigerian economy were examined namely: Banking Industry, Oil and Gas Industry, and Agricultural Industry in order to examine the level of impact ICTs have on the overall Nigerian economy.

Abstract The newly passed Finance Act 2020 (FA2020) in Nigeria is reviewed especially as it relates to the oil and gas industry. The review is partly executed by modeling the specific provisions of the Act that impact gas utilization projects. The effect of the provisions on investor returns as well as the extent to which government objectives are met is ascertained – the government objectives being to prevent tax leakage via excessive financing costs, as well as encourage gas development and utilization. A qualitative assessment of the FA2020 is first conducted to examine its provisions applicable to the oil and gas sector. Furthermore, a spreadsheet Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) economic model of a gas central processing facility is built. A hypothetical $800Million (CapEx), 300mmscfd gas processing facility, which is 70% debt financed is modeled by incorporating the provisions of the FA2020. The metrics of the project (both investor and government) are then compared under the scenarios of with and without the FA2020. Key results indicate that the economic returns to investor in the gas processing facility are still largely preserved at a healthy level, even as government take improves by $102Million due to the FA2020. Specifically, without the FA2020, investor returns an IRR of 21.11% while due to the FA2020, investor IRR declines to 19.79%. Sensitivity analysis serves to illustrate one of the aims of the FA2020, which is to prevent tax loss from high cost of financing. Lengthening the tenor of loans reduces the fraction of the financing costs that is tax deductible. The modeling result shows that, ceteris paribus, for one (1) year increase in loan tenor, the amount of financing cost that is tax deductible reduces by 5%. Another important outcome is that for every $1 of government receipts preserved/enhanced by the FA, the investor NPV declines by 38cents This impact assessment of the FA2020 on gas utilization projects is conducted against the backdrop of several government pronouncements and policy positions to encourage domestic gas development. Financing plays an important role in delivering gas projects, consequently the evaluation of the impact of the FA2020 becomes imperative. This is to allow an examination of the effect of the Act on the ability to meet the strategic objective of powering the economy via gas while fulfilling Nigeria’s climate change commitments by deeper adoption of gas as a transition fuel.
