Abstract Objectives Light exposure of packaged foods during their distribution, retailing, and consumer use can degrade product nutrient content as well as visual appearance and taste. Changes to food nutrients caused by light may negatively alter their functionality, bioavailability, and efficacy. Proper package design consideration may protect nutrients and sensory quality and is important for delivering health value and positive eating experience. Dairy milk is a food category of interest due its vulnerability to nutrient degradation with light exposure. Our research aims to quantify the impacts of light on milk nutrients to elucidate the role of packaging for nutrient preservation of dairy milk. Methods A patented method was used to determine a Light Protection Factor (LPF) to quantify light protection performance of the study packaging materials. The method provides light exposure to the packaging under evaluation and monitors a light sensitive marker solution to then determine the LPF value. Aqueous riboflavin (RF) solution was chosen as the marker in our study as it is a leading indicator of milk nutrient and sensory decline. Results Each of four light protection packaging treatments was measured by use of the LPF methodology. The impact of light on the nutrient content of extended-shelf-life milk was observed over a month in a simulated retail storage environment (fluorescently lighted refrigerator case, 2186 lux, 3 C) as a function of these light protection packaging treatments. LPF light protective performances of packaging treatments were correlated to RF preservation of packaged milks through the study (R2 > 0.95). The highest LPF packaging treatment (LPF 64) preserved milk RF at 83% of its initial level through the study whereas the control packaging without light protection treatment (LPF 1) had only 23% RF remaining in the same study period. Conclusions LPF can be used to quantitatively design packages with improved light protection performance ensuring RF content of milk through product life. As RF decline is a leading indicator of decline of other light sensitive nutrients, this methodology has applicability to quantitatively predict preservation of other nutrients impacted by light such as Vitamins A and D. An effective approach for improving nutrient use efficiency and crop productivity simultaneously through exploitation of biological potential for efficient acquisition and utilization of nutrients by crops is very much needed in this current era. Thus, an attempt is made here to investigate the impact of long term fertilization in the soil ecology in rice-rice cropping system in post kharif - 2015 in flooded tropical rice (Oryza sativa L.) in an acidic sandy soil. The experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with quadruplicated treatments. Soil samples at different growth stages of rice were collected from long term fertilizer experiment.The studied long-term manured treatments included 100 % N, 100% NP, 100 % NPK, 150 % NPK and 100 % NPK+FYM (5 t ha-1) and an unmanured control. Soil fertility status like SOC content and other available nutrient content has decreased continuously towards the crop growth period. Comparing the results of different treatments, it was found that the application of 100% NPK + FYM exhibited highest nutrient content in soils. With regards to microbial properties it was also observed that the amount of microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and microbial biomass nitrogen ( MBN) showed highest accumulation in 100 % NPK + FYM at maximum tillering stage of the rice. The results further reveal that dehydrogenase activity was maximum at panicle initiation stage and thereafter it decreases. Soil organic carbon content, MBC, MBN and dehydrogenase activity were significantly correlated with each other. Significant correlations were observed between rice yield and MBC at maturity stage( R2 = 0.94**) and panicle initiation stage( R2 = 0.92**) and available nitrogen content at maturity stage( R2 = 0.91**).

Abstract Introduction Light emitted from visual displays can acutely increase alertness, improve cognitive performance and suppress melatonin in the evening. Here we tested the influence of different melanopic irradiance levels emitted by a metameric display setting on alertness, vigilance and salivary melatonin levels. Methods In an ongoing study, 37 healthy, male participants have so far completed a 2-week study protocol. Volunteers were assigned to one of four luminance groups which differed in brightness levels (27 cd/m2 - 280 cd/m2). Illuminance ranged between 7 and 85 lx. Within the four groups each volunteer was exposed to a low melanopic (LM) and a high melanopic condition (HM). The LM and HM differed in melanopic irradiance (ca. 3-fold change), but matched in terms of cone excitation (metamers). Before, during and after the light exposure, volunteers performed a psychomotor vigilance task (PVT). Subjective alertness and melatonin levels were continuously measured in half-hourly intervals throughout scheduled wakefulness in the 17-h in lab study. Results Preliminary analysis yielded an overall alerting response in the HM vs. the LM condition (p<0.05) concomitant with a trend of reduced melatonin levels in HM vs. LM (p=0.08). So far, we could not observe a difference in PVT performance for HM and LM (Reaction time responses between 100 and 500 ms). Since we are still lacking statistical power in the ongoing study, we cannot yet satisfactorily interpret interaction effects between melanopic condition and brightness. Conclusion Our data indicate that rather low brightness levels of high melanopic display light impacts alertness and melatonin levels in the evening. Thus, metameric low melanopic display light may be a promising method to attenuate activating properties of evening light on circadian physiology without affecting visual appearance. Operational results of a co-digestion facility were assessed over a period of 18 months. The organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) contains a considerable amount of contaminants and grit (up to 6% w/w). A BTA-Pulper efficiently treated the different waste streams and converted a high amount of volatile solids (VS) into the digester feedstock. The seasonal fluctuations of the waste composition significantly influenced the biogas production. The impact of this seasonally variant degradability of VS had to be considered by evaluating the operation results. The waste streams investigated did not show any negative impact on digester performance. The hydraulic retention time (HRT) in the digester considerably affected the VS-reduction. Despite a considerable decrease of VS-degradation a reduction of HRT from 14 to 8 days slightly improves the gas production rate (GPR). An activated sludge system efficiently reduced the pollution of the effluent.The nutrient content of the anaerobic compostwas favourable and the content of pollutants was low. The facility produced surplus electrical power up to 290 MJ/t. An overall energy balance shows that the facility substitutes primary energy.

Current research studies carried out on light-induced changes in dairy products, fats and oils, and meat products are reviewed. General factors affecting thus formed off-flavors in these food groups are the intensity of light, exposure interval, type of packaging, and some specific nutritive constituents. In dairy products, riboflavin degradation, losses of vitamin A and C are the major effects, whereas in fats and oils the effective constituents are ß-carotene, tocopherols, the undesirable flavors being related mainly to photosensitized oxidation. In case of meat products, the visual appearance seems to be the most important effect due to the formation of oxidized pigment metmyoglobin from oxymyoglobin upon light exposure. The effects of packaging materials and types on photooxidation are also being discussed for each of the above three food commodity groups.

Purchase behavior and preferences for consumers of fresh apples were investigated using a consumer survey conducted at a special-event apple market. Survey respondents were asked to list apple cultivars they had purchased at the retail market and the special-event market. The special-event market offered many uncommon cultivars packed in clear plastic bags with a fixed weight and price. Respondents were also asked to identify their reasons for selection of each apple cultivar and answer demographic questions. A total of 169 customers completed the survey. Profiles of customers were identified using multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), and the impact of the change in available apple cultivars on consumers’ purchase behavior was explored. Consumers primarily indicated four main reasons in the selection of their apples: visual appearance, previous experience, taste/aroma, and texture. The first two reasons, evaluated before eating an apple, were loaded on the first MCA dimension, while the last two reasons (i.e., eating quality) were loaded on the second dimension in data from both marketplaces. HCA identified five classes of customers in both markets, and results indicated that similar market segments existed within the two marketplaces, regardless of the availability of apple cultivars.

Abstract Recent developments in the lighting research field have demonstrated the importance of a proper exposure to light to mediate several of our behavioral and physiological responses. However, we spend nowadays around 90% of our time indoors with an often quite limited access to bright daylight. To be able to anticipate how much the built environment actually influences our light exposure, and how much it may ultimately impact our health, well-being, and productivity, new computational tools are needed. In this paper, we present a first attempt at a simulation workflow that integrates a spectral simulation tool with a light-driven prediction model of alertness. The goal is to optimize the effects of light on building occupants, by informing the decision makers about the impact of different design choices. The workflow is applied to a case study to provide an example of what learnings can be expected from it.

At present, the growth of Instagram as an online site is phenomenal, because of the shift from its original function as a social communication medium into a marketing platform. Furniture products used to be only available for in-store purchase, can now be easily purchased online. The present study attempted to discover the level of influence and effectiveness of the visual appearance of the furniture products photos through the social networking site, Instagram on consumer perceptions, which is measured using the EPIC (Empathy, Persuasion, Impact and Communication) model. The purpose of the study was to identify the effectiveness of the visual display of furniture product photos on the Instagram social networking site on consumer’s perceptions, and to map the use of the ideal visual display of furniture product photos for online product marketing purposes. The research used comparative analytical methods on photos of furniture products from six accounts of small creative economy entrepreneurs of similar products that are advertised through the social networking site, Instagram. The data of this study are limited in the scope of visual perception of furniture product photos uploaded through the social networking site, Instagram on consumer perceptions. The results showed that the visual display in the form of photos of furniture products through the social networking site, Instagram had an effective result on consumer perceptions. The visual display is declared effective as a media for promoting furniture products through the social networking site, Instagram based on the four dimensions of EPIC. The dimensions of Empathy and Impact are the most dominant aspects. The visual display mapping used as an advertising photo is not only influenced by the Empathy dimension and the Impact dimension, but also dominantly influenced by the associated design principles, namely, Unity and Domination. Встановлено, що важливу роль віді-грають природні циклічні коливання водного стоку ійого зарегулювання. Зазначено пряму залежністьміж життєдіяльністю гідробіонтів та сезоннимвмістом біогенних речовин у водоймах. Наведено ре-зультати досліджень із вивчення впливу гідробіологі-чних (фотосинтетичних) процесів та біологічногофактора на коливання значень вмісту біогенних ре-човин. Підкреслюється, що рівень вмісту біогеннихречовин лімітує розвиток біологічних процесів у воді.Визначено, що мінливість біогенних елементів у річ-ковій воді має чітко виражений сезонний характер.Встановлено залежність між величиною водногостоку й розвитком гідробіологічних процесів. Охарак-теризовано евтрофікаційні процеси річки Ворскла, зякої проводився збір агроекологічної інформації.
