Operational results of a co-digestion facility were assessed over a period of 18 months. The organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) contains a considerable amount of contaminants and grit (up to 6% w/w). A BTA-Pulper efficiently treated the different waste streams and converted a high amount of volatile solids (VS) into the digester feedstock. The seasonal fluctuations of the waste composition significantly influenced the biogas production. The impact of this seasonally variant degradability of VS had to be considered by evaluating the operation results. The waste streams investigated did not show any negative impact on digester performance. The hydraulic retention time (HRT) in the digester considerably affected the VS-reduction. Despite a considerable decrease of VS-degradation a reduction of HRT from 14 to 8 days slightly improves the gas production rate (GPR). An activated sludge system efficiently reduced the pollution of the effluent.The nutrient content of the anaerobic compostwas favourable and the content of pollutants was low. The facility produced surplus electrical power up to 290 MJ/t. An overall energy balance shows that the facility substitutes primary energy.

The Hides gasfield was discovered by BP, and its Joint Venture Partner Oil Search Ltd, in Petroleum Prospecting Licence No.27 in Southern Highlands Province in late 1987 by the exploration well Hides-1. The well tested gas at rates of up to 15.9 mmscf/d with small volumes of associated condensate from four separate intervals within the Toro Sandstone.Negotiations with Placer Dome, a Vancouver-based mining company, led to an agreement to sell gas to supply electrical power for the Porgera gold mine in Enga Province 70 km North East from Hides. Approximately 10 mmscf/d of gas will be produced from two wells, one being the original Hides-1 discovery well, via an 8 km pipeline, to a gas processing plant in the nearby Tagari valley. The processed gas will be fed to turbines to generate approximately 42 M W of electrical power which will be fed to the Porgera mine by overhead transmission lines.BP has undertaken technical studies relating to the feasibility of producing the gas from Hides. In association with the technical work BP has also undertaken an environmental study of the impact of development and has embarked upon a survey of various local and land-related issues. It is anticipated that construction operations will start in early 1990, leading to first gas production in mid-1991, only 3½ years after the discovery. The Hides gasfield development will constitute the first commercial hydrocarbon production in PNG.

The article presents the results of the author’s research of the impact of a wide range of restrictions and prohibitions applied to theRussian Federation, used by a number of countries for their geopolitical purposes and as a means of competition. The object of study was the impact of anti-Russian sanctions on the development of Oil & Gas industry and defence industry complex ofRussiain 2014–2016. The purpose of the analysis was to assess the impact of sanctions on the volume of oil and gas production, the dynamics of foreign earnings from the export of oil and gas, and of foreign earnings from the sale abroad of military and civilian products of the Russian defence industry complex (DIC). As the research method, the author used the economic analysis of the time series of statistical data presented in open statistics and literature. The author showed that some countries use the anti-Russian sanctions as a means of political, financial, economic, scientific, and technological struggle with the leadership ofRussiaand Russian economic entities. It is noteworthy that their introduction in 2014 coincided with the readiness of theUSto export gas and oil, which required a niche in the international energy market. The imposed sanctions have affected the volume of oil production inRussia, which was one of the factors of reduction of foreign earnings from the country’s oil and gas exports. However, the Russian defence industry complex has relatively well experienced the negative impact of sanctions and other non-market instruments of competition

Food waste contains numerous easily degradable components, and anaerobic digestion is prone to acidification and instability. This work aimed to investigate the effect of adding yeast on biogas production performance, when substrate is added after biogas production is reduced. The results showed that the daily biogas production increased 520 and 550 ml by adding 2.0% (volatile solids; VS) of activated yeast on the 12th and 37th day of anaerobic digestion, respectively, and the gas production was relatively stable. In the control group without yeast, the increase of gas production was significantly reduced. After the second addition of substrate and yeast, biogas production only increased 60 ml compared with that before the addition. After fermentation, the biogas production of yeast group also increased by 33.2% compared with the control group. Results of the analysis of indicators, such as volatile organic acids, alkalinity and propionic acid, showed that the stability of the anaerobic digestion system of the yeast group was higher. Thus, the yeast group is highly likely to recover normal gas production when the biogas production is reduced, and substrate is added. The results provide a reference for experiments on the industrialization of continuous anaerobic digestion to take tolerable measures when the organic load of the feed fluctuates dramatically.

The variations of daily biogas yields, cumulative biogas yields, biogas composition analysis, total solids (TS) and volatile solids (VS) were studied in the process of mesophilic and dry anaerobic digestion of food waste under different oil contents (0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, 10%) at 35 °C. The gas production raised and then went down with the oil content, followed by 243.14, 245.64, 256.09, 269.25, 276.54, 284.22mL /g TS respectively. The research provided a reference for the pretreatment of food waste in follow-up continuous fermentation. Results showed that the period of the process of mesophilic dry anaerobic digestion under oil content of 0% was the shortest, with the total biogas production of 1275.5mL. During the process of the digestion, methane content of the biogas raised and then went down, up to a maximum of 77.62%. The removal rate of TS and VS in food waste with the oil content of 6% was the highest, obtained as 11.2% and 13.2%, respectively.

J. Anim. Sci. 94: 725–729. Sixty feed barley samples were collected from various locations in western Canada. Samples were either ground (1 mm) or dry-rolled to a processing index of 80%, and fermentability was assessed by measuring gas production (GP) and dry matter disappearances (DMD) at 0, 4, 8, 14 and 24 h of incubation using a batch culture technique. Physical and chemical composition, and GP and DMD varied substantially among samples. There were significant correlations among test weight and nutrient content of barley with GP and DMD of ground barley. The results indicate that the impact of nutrient content on in vitro DMD is more easily detected with ground than rolled barley.

The fear of depletion of fossil fuels and their attendant ecological effects and the high cost of renewable energy technology in Nigeria has triggered a need to develop alternative sources of energy, among which is biogas production. A slurry of 1 kg mixture of agro-waste feed stocks (plantain peel/rice husk, PP/RH; banana peel/plantain peel, BP/PP; and banana peel/rice husk, BP/RH) in 1:1 ratio was co-digested in locally fabricated digesters (10 L capacity). The experiment was run for 50 days and assessed for proximate content, biogas generation, organic matter, and mineral content in the digested and undi-gested agro-waste materials. The proximate composition showed that while banana peel had the highest moisture (56%), rice husk was highest in the content of ash (64%), crude protein (6.94%), and volatile solids (20%). The weekly cumulative biogas generation increased from 852.6 cm3 for BP/PP sample to 1049.7 cm3 for PP/RH sample for the 7 weeks at the experimental room temperature range of 29 oC to 35 oC. Sample PP/RH generated the highest volume of gas (biogas, methane, and others) compared to BP/RH and BP/PP samples.  In each case the volume of gas production decreased in week 7 from 271.4 cm3 to 152.0 cm3 (for biogas), 161.4 cm3 to 97.1 cm3 (for methane), and 110.0 cm3 to 54.9 cm3 (for other gases). The nutritional concentrations of the digested and undigested mixture of the waste samples after Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) and Flame Photometry showed that the digested samples had higher contents of the nutritional elements than the undigested samples. The mineral elements ranged from 0.554 mg/g in the undigested rice husk to 18.155 mg/g in the digested banana peel samples. Fermentation of agricultural wastes to generate biogas and sludge with agricultural value offers an al-ternative and efficient method of agricultural wastes and energy management in Nigeria.

Abstract Background: Several mining activities, especially bauxite, have been carried out in several areas in West Kalimantan. The areas most widely carried out bauxite mining are Sanggau and Ketapang districts. Bauxite mining is included in the classification of surface mining or often referred to as open mining. This is characterized by the demolition of the upper layers of soil and taking the results of weathering rocks, namely granite rocks. The demolition of topsoil is done with the clearing of vegetation above. In this condition, the land still has the same morphology when clearing has not been done and the soil has not been much disturbed. But after mining there is a lot of clay, sandstone, topsoil materials, of course, this will have a negative impact on the environment.Result: The results showed that the gradient of the slope has an important role in land conservation. The greater gradient of the slope will automatically increase the surface runoff, so the greater the energy of run-off. The soil depth is shallow on average and has poor deep soil drainage. Soil is easily eroded, so a lot of rocks and gravel are exposed on the surface, plants cannot develop properly. Floods often occur, in areas of alluvial plains with a range of more than 24 hours. The water availability capacity is also very low. Rainwater in the area mostly becomes runoff. The nutrient content in the ex-mining area is also low. Therefore it is necessary to improve efforts by means of reforestation of the former land so that in the future it can be used for certain uses, especially for agriculture, plantations, and forests.Conclusion: Slopes have an important role in land conservation. Slope affects runoff, effective soil depth, erosion rate, plant growth, waterlogging. Nutrient content in ex- Bauxite mining areas is also low.

Molasses is a significant by-product of sugar industry and can be used as substrate in anaerobic digestion process for biogas production. Molasses was diluted ten time; inoculated by methane producing bacteria, mixed thoroughly in 2 liter batch bioreactor, kept at 370C for 15 days under anaerobic conditions for biogas yield. pH in the process was monitored three times a day. Total solids, volatile solids and COD were measured at alternate days. The gas production was measured by water displacement method. Ten times diluted molasses under anaerobic conditions, in the presence of methane producing bacteria was converted to 6.55 dm3/kg of biogas or 3.93 dm3/kg CH4 and 0.144 kWh electricity.  Keywords: Agro industrial waste; Molasses; Methanogen; Anaerobic digestion; Biogas production. © 2014 JSR Publications. Most oscillating wave energy converters without significant amounts of energy storage capacity generate significant electrical power fluctuations in the range of seconds. Because of these fluctuations, a wave farm may have a negative impact on the power quality of the local grid to which it is connected. Hence, the impact of these devices on both distribution and transmission networks needs to be well understood, before large scale wave farms can be allowed to connect to the grid. This paper details a case study on the impact of a wave farm on the distribution grid around the national wave test site of Ireland. The electrical power output of the oscillating water column (OWC) wave energy converters was derived from experimental time series produced in the context of the FP7 project “CORES”. The results presented in this paper consider voltage fluctuation levels and flicker levels for a typical time series. Simulations were performed using DIgSILENT simulation tool “PowerFactory”.

The study assessed the impact of volatile fatty acids (VFA) to total alkalinity (TA) ratio (VFA/TA), and percentage volatile solids (VS) reduction of batch and semi-continuous anaerobic co-digestion of palm nut paste waste (PNPW) and anaerobic-digested rumen waste (ADRW) on digester stability and biogas production under the environmental condition of 50 ± 1°C and hydraulic retention time of 21 days for the batch studies and 14 days for semi-continuous co-digestion. The co-digestion ratios were based on percentage digester volume corresponding to 90%:10%, 75%:25% and 50%:50%. During batch and semi-continuous anaerobic co-digestion, VFA/TA of 0.32–1.0 and VS reduction of 53–67% were observed as the stable range at which biogas production was maximum. In terms of semi-continuous anaerobic digestion (AD), except for the 50%:50% ratio where biogas production progressed steadily from the first to fourteenth days, biogas production initially dropped from 180.1 to 171.3 mL between the first and third days of the 90%:10% reaching a maximum of 184 mL on the fourteenth day. Biogas production declined from 198.8 to 187.5 mL on the second day and then increased to 198.8 ± 0.5 mL in the case of the 75%:25% with a significant difference between the treatment ratios at p < 0.05. Therefore, the study can confirm that the 50%:50% ratio (PNPW:ADRW) is a suitable option for managing crude fat-based waste under thermophilic AD due to its potential for rapid start-up and complete biodegradation of active biomass within a 21-day period. This presupposes that residual methane as greenhouse gas will be void in the effluent if disposed of.
