Abstract Background In January 2018, the legal limit for alcoholic beverages in grocery stores changed from 4.7 to 5.5 % alcohol. The increased availability of stronger beer, cider and ready-to-drink beverages was expected to increase the total amount of 100% alcohol bought. The study aimed to examine how the change in alcohol legislation affected the purchasing of 100% alcohol from grocery stores by comparing the years 2017 and 2018. Methods The study data consisted of 47,066 loyalty card holders of Finland's largest retail chain, who gave their consent and provided background information by an online questionnaire. The data contained the type, volume and alcoholic content of the purchases, from which we calculated the amount of 100% alcohol bought. The mean individual alcohol purchases in the years 2017 and 2018 were compared by age, gender, level of education and household income using repeated measurements ANOVA models. Results There was only a small, non-significant change in the total amount of 100% alcohol between 2017 and 2018 (mean 1.9 l and 2.0 l, respectively, p = 0.220). Lower income was associated with a decrease in total 100% alcohol purchased, whereas higher income groups showed an increase. Increase in 100% alcohol bought as ready-to-drink beverages was seen in all population groups. Conclusions The availability of stronger alcoholic beverages in grocery stores did not result in a notable overall increase in total purchases of 100% alcohol. The increased purchases of alcohol as ready-to-drink beverages were, on the average, compensated for by decreased purchases of alcohol as other beverages. The association of income with total alcohol purchases may indicate the effect of price in consumer behavior. Key messages The raise in the legal limit of alcohol content raised did not result in a significant increase in the total amount of 100% alcohol bought from grocery stores. Alcohol purchased as ready-to-drink beverages increased in all population groups.

ABSTRACT Objectives. Identify and analyze the socio-emotional processes of university students resulting from social distancing measures for COVID-19. Method. Exploratory, descriptive, quantitative cross-sectional research carried out in a student community (n = 3,194). Psychosocial effects and socio-emotional processes generated by social distancing were investigated through the use an online questionnaire. The increase and decrease in emotions before and after the start of the Healthy Distance Days was analyzed with Student's t-test. Results. Before and during COVID-19 distancing emotions of wellbeing and discomfort were reported, a significant difference (p <0.05) was observed in all the emotions evaluated with the exceptions of stress (women t = 0.331; p = 0.740; men t = 1.297; p = 0.197), anxiety (diverse t = 2.666; p = 0.183) and depression (diverse t = 1.30958; p = 0.195). Personal and family financial situations generate greater concern in the population (70%) and the consumption of alcoholic beverages and tobacco in men (30 to 32 years; 46%) stands out as a strategy to improve mood. Discussion and Conclusion. The analysis of the increase in emotional distress in the student population during social distancing for COVID-19 requires including the social determinants and the socio-cultural components of emotions to explain the socio-emotional processes in emergency situations.

The spatial arrangement of a metropolis is of utmost importance to carry out daily activities, which are constrained by space and time. Accessibility is not only shaped by the spatial and temporal dimension, but it is also defined by individual characteristics, such as gender, impairments, or socioeconomic characteristics of the citizens living or commuting in this area. This study analyzes mobility trends and patterns in the metropolitan area of Barcelona before and after the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, with special emphasis on gender and equality. The study draws on multiple sources of information; however, two main datasets are analyzed: two traditional travel surveys from the transport metropolitan area of Barcelona and two coming from smartphone data. The results show that gender plays a relevant role when analyzing mobility patterns, as already highlighted in other studies, but, after the pandemic outbreak, some population groups were more likely to change their mobility patterns, for example, highly educated population groups and those with higher income. This study also highlights that e-activities may shape new mobility patterns and living conditions for some population segments, but some activities cannot be replaced by IT technologies. For all these reasons, city and transport planning should foster sustainable development policies, which will provide the maximum benefit for society.

AbstractIn recent years, the permanent seismic networks worldwide have largely increased, raising the amount of earthquake signals and the applications using seismic records. Although characterization of the soil properties at recording stations has a large impact on hazard estimates, it has not been implemented so far in a standardized way for reaching high-level metadata. To address this issue, we built an online questionnaire for the identification of the indicators useful for a reliable site characterization at a seismic station. We analysed the answers of a large number of experts in different fields, which allowed us to rank 24 different indicators and to identify the most relevant ones: fundamental frequency (f0), shear-wave velocity profile (VS), time-averaged Vs over 30 m (VS30), depth of seismological and engineering bedrock (Hseis_bed and Heng_bed), surface geology and soil class. Moreover, the questionnaire proposed two additional indices in terms of cost and difficulty to obtain a reliable value of each indicator, showing that the selection of the most relevant indicators results from a complex balance between physical relevancy, average cost and reliability. For each indicator we propose a summary report, provided as editable pdf, containing the background information of data acquisition and processing details, with the aim to homogenize site metadata information at European level and to define the quality of the site characterization (see companion paper Di Giulio et al. 2021). The selected indicators and the summary reports have been shared within European and worldwide scientific community and discussed in a dedicated international workshop. They represent a first attempt to reach a homogeneous set of high-level metadata for site characterization.

Beyond having a good degree, graduates are expected to have relevant skills and attributes required to compete and collaborate in a rapidly changing work environment. In recent times, the employability of Nutrition and Dietetics graduates in Nigeria has been of considerable concern. This study was designed to assess the readiness of trainees in the field of Nutrition and Dietetics from Nigerian Universities for career and work engagements. This descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out among 109 final-year undergraduate and postgraduate students from twelve universities offering Nutrition and Dietetics programme across Nigeria. Data was collected using a semi-structured online questionnaire. Data obtained were background information on the students, their experiences and challenges in their academic pursuits, willingness and readiness to pursue and engage in Nutrition and Dietetics related jobs, as well as their perception of skills and competences for future career and work engagements. The data were analysed using the IBM SPSS version 20.0. About 73% of the respondents were females, mainly between ages 21 and 25 years (62.4%) and undergraduates (70%). Among the undergraduate students, 83.4% had chosen to study Nutrition and Dietetics as a result of personal interest and choice while the postgraduate trainees indicated acquisition of in-depth knowledge of nutrition (60.6%) and quest to enhance career profile for competitive advantage in job pursuits (39.4%) as the core reasons for their choice for the programme. Nearly all the respondents (96.3%) reported having enjoyed their training programs. Only half (50.5%) perceived themselves to be “very ready” and well-prepared for work and career engagement. The top three areas of interest by trainees in Nutrition and Dietetics were Clinical Nutrition and Diet Therapy (60.6%), Community and Public Health Nutrition (43.1%), and Sports Nutrition (11.0%). Three out of every ten trainees had no specific desired skills and competences. While less than half declared that they had no knowledge of the skills and competences desired by employers of nutrition graduates, two-thirds of the trainees perceived themselves as eligible for their choice of work and career. This study shows that most Nutrition and Dietetics trainees in Nigerian universities are ready and willing to start a career in the field. However, many lack the knowledge of expected skills and competences needed for career engagement.

Unsignalized intersections namely two-way stop-controlled intersection (TWSC) and all-way stop-controlled intersection (AWSC) are widely used in Akure. Five intersections consisting of three Tee and two Cross that were critical to traffic flow in the study area were selected for study. Data on geometric features were collected using odometer, while traffic parameters were captured and metered using cine camera placed at a vantage point from the road section during peak and off-peak periods on week days. Traffic flows at the intersections were expressed as functions of traffic characteristics and geometric features of the approaches; while the effect of distances of intersections before and after the intersections studied were also incorporated as a correction factors in the models. The models were developed using multiple linear regression technique with the aid of SPSS software and validated with empirical data other than those used for model calibration. Adjusted R2 values of 0.881 and 0.882 were obtained for Tee and Cross intersections respectively for peak period, while 0.938 and 0.940 respectively were obtained for the off-peak period. These indicate that the flow models are very robust in replicating the observed data. The predictive models have the potential to accurately estimate traffic flow at intersections in the study area and other cities of the world with similar traffic conditions.

This paper reports phase one, conducted from March to June 2015, of a two-phase, qualitative descriptive study designed to explore the perceptions and experiences of older people before and after the introduction of consumer directed care (CDC) to home care packages (HCP) in Australia. Eligible consumers with a local HCP provider were mailed information about the study. Data collection occurred before the introduction of CDC and included face-to-face, in-depth interviews, summaries of interviews, field notes and reflective journaling. Semi-structured questions and ‘emotional touchpoints’ relating to home care were used to guide the interview conversation. Line-by-line data analysis, where significant statements were highlighted and clustered to reveal emergent themes, was used. Five older people, aged 81 to 91 years, participated in the study. The four emergent themes were: seeking quality and reciprocity in carer relationships; patchworking services; the waiting game; and technology with utility. Continuity of carers was central to the development of a trusting relationship and perceptions of care quality among older consumers. Care coordinators and workers should play a key role in ensuring older people receive timely information about CDC and their rights and responsibilities. Participants’ use of contemporary technologies suggests opportunities to improve engagement of HCP clients in CDC.
