AbstractBackgroundHypertriglyceridemia has arisen as the third leading cause of acute pancreatitis. This study aimed at exploring the association between the severity of hypertriglyceridemia-induced pancreatitis (HTGP) and computed tomography (CT)-based body composition parameters and laboratory markers.MethodsLaboratory and clinical parameters were collected from 242 patients with HTGP between 2017 and 2020. Severity of HTGP was evaluated by original or modified CT severity index. Body composition parameters such as area and radiodensity of muscle, subcutaneous adipose tissue and visceral adipose tissue were calculated by CT at the level of third lumbar vertebra. Parameters were compared between mild and moderately severe to severe HTGP. Uni-variate and multi-variate Logistic regression analyses were employed to assess the risk factors of the severity of HTGP.ResultsSeventy patients (28.9%) presented with mild HTGP. Body mass index, waist circumference and all CT-based body composition parameters differed between male and female patients. None was associated with the severity of HTGP, neither in males nor in females. Receiver operating characteristic curves showed that areas under the curves of apolipoprotein A-I and albumin to predict the severity of HTGP were 0.786 and 0.759, respectively (allP < 0.001). Uni-variate and further multi-variate Logistic regression analysis confirmed that low serum albumin (< 35 g/L,P = 0.004, OR = 3.362, 95%CI = 1.492–8.823) and apolipoprotein A-I (< 1.1 g/L,P < 0.001, OR = 5.126, 95%CI = 2.348–11.195), as well as high C-reactive protein (> 90 mg/L,P = 0.005, OR = 3.061, 95%CI = 1.407–6.659) and lipase (P = 0.033, OR = 2.283, 95%CI = 1.070–4.873) were risk factors of moderately severe to severe HTGP. Levels of albumin, apolipoprotein A-I, C-reactive protein and lipase were also associated with the length of hospital stay (allP < 0.05). Besides, low serum albumin, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and high radiodensity of subcutaneous adipose tissue were significant risk factors of pancreatic necrosis in patients with HTGP (allP < 0.05).ConclusionsLow serum albumin and apolipoprotein A-I, and high C-reactive protein and lipase upon admission were associated with a more severe type of HTGP and longer hospital stay for these patients. Albumin and apolipoprotein A-I may serve as novel biomarkers for the severity of HTGP. However, none of the body composition parameters was associated with the severity of HTGP.

AbstractIntroductioHyperuricaemia is associated with traditional cardiovascular risk factors such as type 2 diabetes or dyslipidaemia and a higher mortality.MethodsOut of 528 congenital heart disease patients, 329 patients, including 190 male and 139 female patients, in whom uric acid determination was performed, were studied and followed up to determine survival.ResultsMale congenital heart disease patients with high serum uric acid concentrations (>7 mg/dl) showed significantly (p < 0.05) higher body mass index, serum creatinine, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, triglycerides, and C-reactive protein concentrations than those male congenital heart disease patients with lower serum uric acid levels (≤7 mg/dl). Meanwhile, female congenital heart disease patients with higher serum uric acid concentrations (>5.7 mg/dl) were significantly (p < 0.05) younger, more hypoxaemic, more obese, and with higher C-reactive protein and N-terminal-pro-B-type natriuretic peptide levels than those female congenital heart disease patients with lower serum uric acid concentrations (≤5.7 mg/dl). During a median follow-up of 90 months, 16 out of 528 congenital heart disease patients died – 14 patients of cardiac origin and two patients of non-cardiac origin – of whom 10 were hypoxaemic. Kaplan–Meier analysis showed no significant differences in mortality between male and female congenital heart disease patients with high and low serum uric acid level concentrations.ConclusionsHypoxaemia, body mass index, and C-reactive protein concentrations are higher in hyperuricaemic congenital heart disease patients, although no significant differences were seen in mortality between congenital heart disease patients with high and low serum uric acid concentrations.

The objectives of this study were to determine the serum activities of the pancreatic enzymes amylase, lipase, trypsinogen 1 and trypsinogen 2, serum concentrations of total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein and triglycerides and serum inflammatory indicators, namely C-reactive protein and procalcitonin, in Holstein-Friesian dairy cows with left displacement of the abomasum (LDA). A total of 60 cows (30 LDA-affected and 30 healthy) were included in the study. Laboratory analyses were performed using commercially available ELISA kits and chemical reagents according to the manufacturers’ recommendations. There was a significant increase (P ≤ 0.05) in the activities of lipase, trypsinogen 1 and trypsinogen 2 in LDA-affected cows compared to healthy cows. Amylase concentrations, however, remained unchanged. The serum concentrations of total cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein were significantly (P ≤ 0.05) increased in LDA-affected cows while the concentrations of low-density lipoprotein and triglycerides were significantly (P ≤ 0.05) decreased compared to healthy cows. Procalcitonin and C-reactive protein concentrations were significantly (P ≤ 0.05) increased in LDA-affected cows compared to healthy cows. This study indicates that displacement of the abomasum may be associated with significant pathological effects in the pancreas that may affect cows in the post-operative period.

In adults, obesity is associated with chronic low-grade inflammation, which may cause long-term adverse health consequences. We evaluated whether obesity in prepubertal children also generates this kind of inflammation and whether calprotectin and chemerin may be useful markers for early detection of such inflammation in this group of children. The study population included 83 children aged 2 to 10 years; 62 with obesity and without components of metabolic syndrome and 21 healthy controls with normal body weight. White blood cell (WBC) count, concentrations of C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), calprotectin, and chemerin were determined in peripheral blood. Our study showed that in the group with obesity, serum concentrations of calprotectin and chemerin, as well as CRP were significantly higher as compared with the controls. We found a significant positive correlation between serum chemerin concentrations and BMI z-score (r = 0.33, p < 0.01) in children with obesity. Chemerin concentration was also positively correlated with CRP level (r = 0.36, p < 0.01) in the whole group of children. These findings suggest that obesity may generate chronic low-grade inflammation as early as in the prepubertal period which can be indicated by significantly higher serum concentrations of calprotectin and chemerin. Calprotectin and especially chemerin seem to be promising indicators of this type of inflammation in children with obesity, but the correlation between these markers requires further research.

The half-life ( t1/2) of C-reactive protein (CRP) and its ability to stimulate weak inflammatory responses were investigated in beagle dogs. Four beagle dogs were administered 20 mg/kg indomethacin and blood was collected from the cephalic vein pre-dosing and at 24, 48, 72, 96, 144, 192, 240, 312, and 360 h post-administration. The serum concentrations of CRP were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The serum t1/2 was calculated using the equation 0.693/elimination rate constant. The serum concentration of CRP beyond 192 h post-administration declined to levels in the normal range. The t1/2 was 148.3 h, which is considered to be the essential t1/2 of CRP. The simulation of CRP serum concentrations at arbitrary times using the elimination rate constant obtained in this study became possible.

C-reactive protein (CRP) is a sensitive marker for low-grade inflammation. Long-chainn-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) have anti-inflammatory effects. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect on serum levels of CRP ofn-3 PUFA at two different doses. We also investigated correlations between CRP and the cellular contents of PUFA. Sixty healthy volunteers (twenty-five women and thirty-five men) were randomly assigned to three treatment groups in a double-blind design. The subjects received a supplement of either 6·6 gn-3 PUFA/d, 2·0 gn-3 PUFA/d or placebo (olive oil) for 12 weeks. CRP was measured using a highly sensitive assay. The median serum CRP concentration was 0·78 mg/l. No significant correlations were found between CRP and the content ofn-3 PUFA in granulocytes or platelets. Subjects receivingn-3 PUFA had a significant (P<0·01) increase in the cellular contents of 20: 5n-3, 22: 5n-3 and 22: 6n-3, with the largest increase occurring in the group receiving 6·6 g PUFA/d. A significant (P<0·01) decrease in cellular content of 18: 2n-6 and 20: 4n-6 was observed simultaneously. Serum CRP concentrations, however, were unaffected by the PUFA-containing supplements. The present study shows that dietary supplementation with PUFA-containing supplements has no effect on serum concentrations of CRP, measured with a highly sensitive assay, in healthy subjects.
