The Future of Fisheries. The much-ballyhooed imminent collapse of the world’s fish stocks is simply not borne out by the available data. In much of the world, fish stocks are increasing. We foresee continued fish production wherever there is effective fisheries management, but an uncertain future where there is none, and it is there that establishing effective fisheries management is the most pressing issue. Individual countries and their management agencies will increasingly be challenged to decide between economic efficiency and maintaining traditional fishing communities and practices. As long as the management systems stay in place and the marine ecosystems remain productive, the fish they produce can be sustainably harvested and contribute to food security.

Climate prediction models suggest that agricultural productivity will be significantly affected in the future. The expected rise in average global temperature due to the higher release of greenhouse gases (GHGs) into the atmosphere and increased depletion of water resources with enhanced climate variability will be a serious threat to world food security. Moreover, there is an increase in the frequency and severity of long-lasting drought events over 1/3rd of the global landmass and five times increase in water demand deficits during the 21st century. The top three cereals, wheat (Triticum aestivum), maize (Zea mays), and rice (Oryza sativa), are the major and staple food crops of most people across the world. To meet the food demand of the ever-increasing population, which is expected to increase by over 9 billion by 2050, there is a dire need to increase cereal production by approximately 70%. However, we have observed a dramatic decrease in area of fertile and arable land to grow these crops. This trend is likely to increase in the future. Therefore, this review article provides an extensive review on recent and future projected area and production, the growth requirements and greenhouse gas emissions and global warming potential of the top three cereal crops, the effects of climate change on their yields, and the morphological, physiological, biochemical, and hormonal responses of plants to drought. We also discuss the potential strategies to tackle the effects of climate change and increase yields. These strategies include integrated conventional and modern molecular techniques and genomic approach, the implementation of agronomic best management (ABM) practices, and growing climate resilient cereal crops, such as millets. Millets are less resource-intensive crops and release a lower amount of greenhouse gases compared to other cereals. Therefore, millets can be the potential next-generation crops for research to explore the climate-resilient traits and use the information for the improvement of major cereals.

Marine fish stocks are an important part of the world food system and are particularly important for many of the poorest people of the world. Most existing analyses suggest overfishing is increasing, and there is widespread concern that fish stocks are decreasing throughout most of the world. We assembled trends in abundance and harvest rate of stocks that are scientifically assessed, constituting half of the reported global marine fish catch. For these stocks, on average, abundance is increasing and is at proposed target levels. Compared with regions that are intensively managed, regions with less-developed fisheries management have, on average, 3-fold greater harvest rates and half the abundance as assessed stocks. Available evidence suggests that the regions without assessments of abundance have little fisheries management, and stocks are in poor shape. Increased application of area-appropriate fisheries science recommendations and management tools are still needed for sustaining fisheries in places where they are lacking.

One of the fundamental problems of the world humans live in is that the resources human beings have used to meet their needs are limited. These resources, when used correctly, are enough to meet these needs. The main problem here is the mistakes human beings make and them not being aware of making these. In other words, they are consciously or unconsciously destroying the world they live in with every action they have taken to create the civilization. In this study, we will focus on the subjects of damages brought out to the natural sources by agricultural and aquacultural production which is used to meet the need for food, and wiping the effects of these damages. In this context, we will also focus on the conditions of the organic agriculture principle application on aquacultural production, which has emerged as a solution to the threats targeting human health and to the environmental problems brought out by the agricultural production.

Abstract Marine fisheries provide protein, income, and employment for millions of people across the world, but future fisheries face multiple stressors, including climate change. To ensure continued flows of benefits from fisheries, we need modern, forward-looking ways of setting sustainability objectives that consider ecosystem carrying capacity, health of fish stocks, societal nutritional and economic needs, and equitable distribution of fishery benefits. Transdisciplinary teams of oceanographers, climatologists, ecologists, economists, data scientists, and decision scientists working together with fishery managers, municipal leaders, fishers, aquaculturists, and seafood supply chain businesses can reimagine sustainable fisheries in a changing world. Through coordinated, distributed research nodes, these types of teams will develop frameworks, information, infrastructure, and application pathways needed to ensure vibrant, resilient fisheries and fishing communities in healthy marine ecosystems in future decades.

Over the last 2 decades, the scientific and popular media have been bombarded by gloom-and-doom stories on the future of fisheries, the status of fish stocks, and the impact of fishing on marine ecosystems. Dozens of certification and labeling schemes have emerged to advise consumers on what seafood is sustainable. In recent years, an opposing narrative has emerged emphasizing the success of fisheries management in many places, the increasing abundance of fish stocks in those places, and the prescription for sustainable fisheries. However, there has been no comprehensive survey of what really constitutes sustainability in fisheries, fish stock status, success and failures of management, and consideration of the impacts of fishing on marine ecosystems. This book will explore very different perspectives on sustainability and bring together the data from a large number of studies to show where fish stocks are increasing, where they are declining, the consequences of alternative fisheries management regimes, and what is known about a range of fisheries issues such as the impacts of trawling on marine ecosystems. Aimed principally at a general audience that is already interested in fisheries but seeks both a deeper understanding of what is known about specific issues and an impartial presentation of all of the data rather than selected examples used to justify a particular perspective or agenda. It will also appeal to the scientific community eager to know more about marine fisheries and fishing data, and serve as the basis for graduate seminars on the sustainability of natural resources.

Climate change and global warming became a real concern for global food security. The world population explosion is a critical factor that results in enormous emissions of greenhouse gasses (GHGs), required to cover the growing demands of fresh water, food, and shelter. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a significant oil-producing country, which is included in the list of 55 countries that produce at least 55% of the world’s GHGs and thus involved in the top 30 countries over the world with emission deficits. At the same time, the UAE is located in an arid region of the world, with harsh environmental conditions. The sharp population increases and the massive growth in the urbanization are primary sources, lead to further stresses on the agricultural sector. Thus, the future of the food production industry in the country is a challenging situation. Consequently, the primary objective of this work is to shed light on the current concerns related to climate change and food security, through describing the implications of climate change on the food production sector of the UAE. Tailored solutions that can rescue the future of food security in the country are also highlighted.

It highlights weaknesses, it creates awareness of threats in current situations, helps overcome challenges and creates opportunities for the future. Statistical data analysis enables existing food security interventions and programs to be reviewed and revised, and this better understanding of current situations enables more authoritative and relevant decision-making processes for the future. Statistical literacy involves skills and expertise in data description and interpretation (in words as well as in numbers) to name, explore and amend beliefs, opinions and suggestions. It helps decision-making processes about food security in a sub-nation, nation and region, as well as the world. This chapter will demonstrate the importance of open data and visualization, including its challenges and opportunities, in the food security context at national and global level to make decision-makers aware of the need to enhance their capacity for and investment in statistical literacy.

Abstract The argument persists that the continued overexploitation by many fisheries around the world is evidence that current approaches to fisheries management are failing, and that more precautionary management approaches are needed. We review the available estimates of the status of fish stocks from three sources: the FAO's “State of Marine Resources”, a database on scientific stock assessments, and recent estimates from statistical models designed to determine the status of unassessed fish stocks. The two key results are (i) that stocks that are scientifically assessed are in better shape and indeed are not typically declining but rebuilding, and (ii) that large stocks appear to be in better shape than small stocks. These results support the view that stocks that are managed are improving, while stocks that are not managed are not. Large stocks receive far more management attention than small stocks in jurisdictions that have active fisheries management systems, and most unassessed stocks are simply not managed. We assert that fisheries management as currently practised can (and often does) lead to sustainable fisheries, and what is needed is to actively manage the unassessed fisheries of the world. More precautionary management is not necessarily needed to ensure the sustainability of managed fisheries.

The analysis of the current state of vegetable production in Ukraine is chosen for the purpose, the main problems of its development in modern conditions are established; The role of vegetable growing in the food market system has been studied and the directions of stabilization and increase of efficiency of functioning of the vegetable subcomplex have been determined. The methodological basis of the study were scientific papers on the formation and functioning of the vegetable market. The following methods were used: dialectical, abstract-logical, systematic analysis (theoretical generalizations and formation of conclusions); mathematical and statistical, the method of expert assessments (when establishing a rating assessment of the level of yield of vegetables). Results: The article analyzes the indicators of production, sown areas and yield levels of major crops for the period 2000-2019 in Ukraine, Europe and the world, outlines the general strategy of the vegetable industry, identifies the features of the vegetable and food subcomplex in system of the national food market. Aspects of formation of food security of Ukraine on the basis of an estimation of levels of production and consumption, volumes of export and import are considered. The level of food security of the country in 2015 and 2019 was determined by calculating the indicator of economic affordability of products and indicators of adequacy of consumption of different groups of products in Ukraine in 2019. The reasons for the unsatisfactory condition of the vegetable and food subcomplex are analyzed, the general strategy and priority directions of development of vegetable and melon growing and processing industry for the period up to 2025 are stated, the volumes of vegetable and melon production for the future are determined. The scientific novelty is to establish trends in the development of the vegetable industry for the 20-year period (2000-2019) in Ukraine, CIS countries, regions of the world and compare the rate of change of these indicators for this period. The practical significance of the publication is to identify the main problems of development of the vegetable industry in the food market and to identify ways to solve problems in the future.
