1. Introduction and Summary .—This paper deals with the elastic stability of a corrugated plate under thrust along its generators. Besides the assumption, common to all such problems, that the plate is thin, it is supposed that the depth of a bay ( d , fig. 1) is a small multiple of h , the semi-thickness, and that the transverse expansion that is the usual accompaniment of a longitudinal thrust, is prevented by a thrust in a perpendicular direction. The equations derived in §§ 2-7 are then soluble, and the critical stress in any case can be found from an equation expressing that an infinite determinant is zero. The numerical work that has been done has been limited to the two cases in which d = 10 h and d = 5 h , respectively. As a preliminary, in §§ 8-11, it has been supposed that σ, Poisson’s ratio, is zero. The equations are greatly simplified by this supposition, and results can easily be obtained which are a valuable guide to the more complicated arithmetic of the normal case in which σ does not vanish. In particular, this preliminary work is used to find the “favourite type of distortion” (that possible under the least stress) in the other case: it can be seen that the favourite types are the same whether a is or is not zero. The necessary exploration is therefore done for σ = 0, and the arithmetic in the more practical case, in which we suppose that σ = ¼, is confined to the calculation of stresses causing definite modes of distortion.

In ethics, when discussing problems of justice and a just social existence one question arises obviously: What is the normal case of the relation between I and you we start from? In moral philosophy, each position includes basic socio-anthropological convictions in that we understand the other, for example, primarily as competitor in the fight for essential resources or as a partner in communication. Thus, it is not the human being as isolated individual, or as specimen of the human species or socialised member of a historical society what needs to be understood. Instead, the individual in its relation to the other or others has been studied in phenomenology and the philosophy of dialogue of the twentieth century. In the following essay I focus on Martin Buber’s and Jean-Paul Sartre’s theories of intersubjectivity which I use in order to explore the meaning of recognition and disrespect for an individual. They offer a valuable contribution to questions of practical philosophy and the socio-philosophical diagnosis of our time.


During the last few years of his life Prof. Simon Newcomb was keenly interested in the problem of periodicities, and devised a new method for their investigation. This method is explained, and to some extent applied, in a paper entitled "A Search for Fluctuations in the Sun's Thermal Radiation through their Influence on Terrestrial Temperature." The importance of the question justifies a critical examination of the relationship of the older methods to that of Newcomb, and though I do not agree with his contention that his process gives us more than can be obtained from Fourier's analysis, it has the advantage of great simplicity in its numerical work, and should prove useful in a certain, though I am afraid, very limited field. Let f ( t ) represent a function of a variable which we may take to be the time, and let the average value of the function be zero. Newcomb examines the sum of the series f ( t 1 ) f ( t 1 + τ) + f ( t 2 ) f ( t 2 + τ) + f ( t 3 ) f ( t 3 + τ) + ..., where t 1 , t 2 , etc., are definite values of the variable which are taken to lie at equal distances from each other. If the function be periodic so as to repeat itself after an interval τ, the products are all squares and each term is positive. If, on the other hand, the periodic time be 2τ, each product will be negative and the sum itself therefore negative. It is easy to see that if τ be varied continuously the sum of the series passes through maxima and minima, and the maxima will indicated the periodic time, or any of its multiples.

Debates on overtourism, as a challenging phenomenon, are becoming more and more active. The purpose of this integrative review paper is to discuss the right to travel and residents’ rights in the context of overtourism and sustainable tourism, analyzing different scientific and legal sources. The integrative review analysis shows that overtourism and sustainable tourism are important contexts influencing the changing meaning of the right to travel and the right to live. On the one hand, the overtourism context makes the voices of residents more important to be heard, while on the other hand the sustainable tourism context influences the discussion of the right to travel, asking tourist voices to be considered more important. The results of this integrative review also shows the importance of rethinking the concept of sustainability in tourism as a holistic principle of democracy and as a degrowth movement, and opens the broader discussion for future tourism research development. The problem of overtourism could be solved by striving to develop sustainable tourism goals, thus balancing equality between the right to travel and residents’ rights. The presented integrative review paper is a preliminary work; further research is needed in order to find possible concrete solutions for overtourism.

Boyko V.V., Makarov V.V., Sochnieva A.L., Kritsak V.V.Residual foreign bodies in soft tissues are one of the main causes of chronical infection lesions and decrease in life quality. Surgical treatment is the most common way to relieve the patient from a foreign body. Often there is a question whether to remove a foreign body? On the one hand, all foreign bodies that are in the human body must be removed. On the other hand, in the absence of symptoms, the risk of surgery performed for the purpose of removal exceeds the risk associated with finding the foreign body. We would like to describe a practical case of removing a foreign body (Kirschner`s wires) from the left supraclavicular region. The young patient lived with a fragment of Kirschner's wire left after the osteosynthesis of the fractured clavicle for 5 years. Surgery to remove the residual foreign body was successful. Хірургічне лікування основний спосіб позбавити хворого від наявності чужорідного агента. Часто виникає питання чи видаляти чужорідне тіло. З одного боку, усі сторонні тіла, що знаходяться в тілі людини, підлягають видаленню, з іншого боку при відсутності симптомів ризик операції, проводимої з метою видалення, перевищує ризик, пов'язаний з перебуванням чужорідного тіла. Ми хотіли б поділитися випадком видалення залишкового стороннього тіла (спиці Кіршнера) лівої надключичної ділянки із власної практики. Молода пацієнтка прожила з уламком спиці Кіршнера, залишеної після металлоостеосинтезу поламаної ключиці протягом 5 років. Операція з видалення залишкового стороннього тіла пройшла успішно. Хирургическое лечение основной способ избавить больного от наличия чужеродного агента. Часто возникает вопрос удалять ли инородное тело? С одной стороны, все инородные тела, находящиеся в теле человека, подлежат удалению, с другой стороны при отсутствии симптомов риск операции, производимой с целью удаления, превышает риск, связанный с нахождением инородного тела. Мы хотели бы поделится случаем удаления остаточного инородного тела (спицы Киршнера) левой надключичной области из собственной практики. Молодая пациентка прожила с обломком спицы Киршнера, оставленной после металлоостеосинтеза поломанной ключицы в течении 5 лет. Операция по удалению остаточного инородного тела прошла успешно. На 7 послеоперационные сутки пациентка была выписана из стационара под наблюдение хирурги по месту жительства.Ключевые слова: инородное тело мягких тканей, спица Киршнера, оперативное лечение.

The tensile strengths of graftings between three selected sweet cherry cultivars and five selected cherry rootstocks were determined with an Instron instrument 6, 12, and 18 weeks after grafting and compared with the tensile strength of self-grafted rootstocks and graftings of rootstocks used as scions. The combination of sweet cherry cultivars and rootstocks was selected to provide a range of compatibility based on preliminary work. The tensile strengths of sweet cherry cultivars grafted on different rootstocks never exceeded the tensile strengths of the self-grafted rootstocks. Rootstocks grafted as scions on Prunus avium L. rootstocks and self-grafted rootstocks produced some of the strongest unions tested and also produced union strength much faster than any of the other combinations. The degree of compatibility was quantified and results indicated that if this value was below 0.2, measured 18 weeks after grafting, it corresponded to combinations with major risks of delayed incompatibility.Key words: tensile strength, grafting, compatibility, sweet cherry, Prunus avium.

Abstract Early studies of the processing characteristics of synthetic rubber (GR-S) indicated that it would be desirable to have a laboratory test to determine whether satisfactory tread slabs could be produced from a given batch of tread stock by extrusion through a plate die. In the factory, the material is extruded as a continuous slab, flat on one side and shaped on the other. The extruding material is put under tension and carried away by a moving belt. Since the central portion of the slab, which will eventually become the tire tread, is thicker than the adjoining sidewall portions, it is extruded at a greater rate. Therefore, tensile stresses are set up in the sidewalls after the stock leaves the die. The material either flows to relieve these stresses or it tears. Preliminary work indicated that common methods of measuring plasticity were not adequate to measure or predict the tendency of certain stocks to tear in the sidewalls. Therefore, it was decided to develop a test which should reproduce the essential features of factory extrusion in miniature and under close control. This was accomplished in a new extrusion plastometer by the use of special dies and of a device to apply tension to the extruding sample.

The figure and story of Faustus is part of the European cultural heritage, and as it usually, even inevitably happens with legends, it lives further in the adaptations of later periods and authors . It is mainly linked to Goethe’s name, his figure became well known and immortal in his works. Ever since Goethe, all authors – who respect themselves – in German literature must write a new Faustus, while in other nation’s literatures newer and newer paraphrases were born, which on their turn gave rise to further adaptations, and the scientific, aesthetic etc. literature also has gotten richer. However the canonized, more precisely, classicisized framework of interpretation is not transgressed by any of the newer writers and poets of the past centuries, moreover it is only the form of the legend that is rewritten – naturally with the aim of modernization. All of that as part of the literary heritage. As far as the problem of original sources is concerned: what can be regarded as a source and what is adaptation, which are the works that motivated writers, are just a matter of the preliminary work of the interpretation. On the other hand the problem that within the ancient, mythical tradition there is an original, ancient Faustus legend, does not raise any attention as that is “mere raw material”. The truth is ... that the beginning that has been preliminarily, yet directly definitory for centuries, is that original force that is given in the topic and thus it is difficult to bring it to the surface, preferably independently from the heritage that was built upon it. As far as the time dimension is concerned, we are searching in an undefineable, open past, moreover it is most probable that the legend itself is not entirely original, so to say, but it is the adaptation of a more ancient idea or topic. And by this its symbolism and hidden semantics lose their European characteristics.

When, in consequence of a close approach, a comet of the Jupiter group changes its osculating semimajor axis from a > 1 to a < 1 (á = 1 for Jupiter's orbit), or vice versa, then the normal case is that of an abrupt change from one side of Jupiter's orbit to the other one. Under special conditions, however, temporary capture into satellite or ‘Trojan’ status is possible. P/Slaughter-Burnham, the first known comet in temporary 1:1 resonance with Jupiter, sheds some light on the requirements for Trojan captures. In consideration of the recent finding that the Trojan ‘cloud’ around L4 contains probably as many as 700 Trojans brighter than magnitude 20.9, it is suggested that at least some comets of the Jupiter group may have originated among these accumulations around L4 and L5.

Cascading failures can occur in many technical systems where the components are organized as in series–parallel structures. The failures in these systems may propagate from one component to the other, not only within the same parallel sub-structure but also between different sub-structures. This article presents a recursive aggregation method based on the extended models of reliability block diagram, for analyzing the impacts of cascading failures on the reliability of series–parallel systems. Based on the reliability analysis, the effects of safety barriers on preventing cascading failures are studied, and the importance of safety barriers at different locations is evaluated. One simple example of three components and one practical case from an oil production system are presented. The findings in these case studies illustrate how system designers and safety managers can identify the effective and reasonable ways of installing safety barriers by using the proposed approaches, for the mitigation of cascading failures in series–parallel technical systems.

This paper evaluates the elastic stability and vibration characteristics of circular plates made from auxetic materials. By solving the general solutions for buckling and vibration of circular plates under various boundary conditions, the critical buckling load factors and fundamental frequencies of circular plates, within the scope of the first axisymmetric modes, were obtained for the entire range of Poisson's ratio for isotropic solids, i.e., from −1 to 0.5. Results for elastic stability reveal that as the Poisson's ratio of the plate becomes more negative, the critical bucking load gradually reduces. In the case of vibration, the decrease in Poisson's ratio not only decreases the fundamental frequency, but the decrease becomes very rapid as the Poisson's ratio approaches its lower limit. For both buckling and vibration, the plate's Poisson's ratio has no effect if the edge is fully clamped. The results obtained herein suggest that auxetic materials can be employed for attaining static and dynamic properties which are not common in plates made from conventional materials. Based on the exact results, empirical models were generated for design purposes so that both the critical buckling load factors and the frequency parameters can be conveniently obtained without calculating the Bessel functions.
