AbstractBackgroundBoth telomere length and alcohol consumption play important roles in carcinogenesis and biological age. Many efforts have been made to investigate the association between alcohol consumption and telomere length. However, no consensus has been reached yet.MethodsIn this article, we performed a meta-analysis to integrate the investigation results in the literature about the association between alcohol consumption and telomere length. After searching articles published between 2000 and 2016, 21 articles (including 27 analyses, total sample size 35,891) met our eligibility criteria.ResultsWe found a significant association between alcohol consumption and telomere length (Fisher’s combined p-value = 3.52E-8 and Liptak’s weighted p-value = 8.24E-3). We also found that the significance of the association between alcohol consumption and telomere length varies with study type (cohort, case-control, or cross-sectional) and study population (Europe, Asia, American, or Australia).ConclusionsCombined evidence showed that alcohol consumption is associated with telomere length. The consistent quantifications of alcohol consumption and telomere length would benefit the future aggregation of the evidence from different studies.

ObjectiveLow neighbourhood socioeconomic status (NSES) has been linked to a higher risk of overweight/obesity, irrespective of the individual’s own socioeconomic status. No meta-analysis study has been done on the association. Thus, this study was done to synthesise the existing evidence on the association of NSES with overweight, obesity and body mass index (BMI).DesignSystematic review and meta-analysis.Data sourcesPubMed, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Web of Sciences and Google Scholar databases were searched for articles published until 25 September 2019.Eligibility criteriaEpidemiological studies, both longitudinal and cross-sectional ones, which examined the link of NSES to overweight, obesity or BMI, were included.Data extraction and synthesisData extraction was done by two reviewers, working independently. The methodological quality of included studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale for the observational studies. The summary estimates of the relationships of NSES with overweight, obesity and BMI statuses were calculated with random-effects meta-analysis models. Heterogeneity was assessed by Cochran’s Q and I2 statistics. Subgroup analyses were done by age categories, continents, study designs and NSES measures. Publication bias was assessed by visual inspection of funnel plots and Egger’s regression test.ResultA total of 21 observational studies, covering 1 244 438 individuals, were included in this meta-analysis. Low NSES, compared with high NSES, was found to be associated with a 31% higher odds of overweight (pooled OR 1.31, 95% CI 1.16 to 1.47, p<0.001), a 45% higher odds of obesity (pooled OR 1.45, 95% CI 1.21 to 1.74, p<0.001) and a 1.09 kg/m2 increase in mean BMI (pooled beta=1.09, 95% CI 0.67 to 1.50, p<0.001).ConclusionNSES disparity might be contributing to the burden of overweight/obesity. Further studies are warranted, including whether addressing NSES disparity could reduce the risk of overweight/obesity.PROSPERO registration numberCRD42017063889

AbstractSemen quality is a key indicator of male fecundity and therefore is closely related to male fertility. In recent decades a significant decrease of semen parameters was observed worldwide. Except for environmental pollution, low physical activity, body weight and comorbidities, unhealthy diet was linked to semen quality decline. Mediterranean Diet (MedDiet) due to its anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties, is considered as beneficial for semen. However, results of existing studies are inconclusive. The aim of this review was to pool associations between adherence to the MedDiet and semen quality parameters in observational studies. Electronic databases including PubMed, Embase and Scopus were searched until April 2019 with no restriction to language or time. Studies were eligible for inclusion if they filled following criteria: (1) observational design (retrospective or prospective), (2) adherence to MedDiet assessed using score or data-driven method and (3) semen quality parameters (total motility, progressive motility, total count, concentration or volume) as outcomes. Mean differences or odds ratios of abnormal semen parameters between the highest and lowest quintiles of MedDiet were converted to standardized mean differences (SMD). Random effects models with inverse variance method were used to pool differences. Heterogeneity was assessed using the Cochrane Q test and I2 statistic with value > 50% indicating substantial heterogeneity. Five cross-sectional studies extracted from 840 articles, met the eligibility criteria and were included in the meta-analysis. Higher adherence to MedDiet compared to lower adherence was associated with increased total (SMD = 0.59 95%CI: 0.12–1.06, I2 = 80%, pheterogenity < 0.01, n = 4) and progressive (SMD = 0.53 95%CI: 0.16–0.91, I2 = 0%, pheterogenity = 0.94, n = 2) sperm motility. No associations were observed between adherence to MedDiet and total sperm count (SMD = 0.14 95%CI: -0.20–0.48, I2 = 70%, pheterogenity < 0.01, n = 5), concentration (SMD = 0.22 95%CI: -0.04–0.47, I2 = 48%, pheterogenity = 0.10, n = 5), volume (SMD = 0.02 95%CI: -0.20–0.25, I2 = 21%, pheterogenity = 0.28, n = 5), as well as morphology (SMD = -0.10 95%CI: -0.36–0.16, I2 = 38%, pheterogenity = 0.18, n = 4). The results suggest that higher adherence to the MedDiet may have a protective effect on semen quality, probably by increased intake of antioxidant-rich products. Limitations of findings include substantial between-study heterogeneity and use of cross-sectional design. Beneficial effects of the MedDiet on semen quality have to be confirmed in further prospective studies.

Background: The review attempts to provide synthesis of published studies evaluating the influence of an aberrant frenum attached close to the gingival margin or with inadequate width of attached gingiva on the growth of the maxilla. Methodology: This review was reported using the PRISMA checklist as a template. PubMed, EBSCO and Google scholar were searched for in earlier publications up to January 2019. In addition, reference lists of the included studies were hand searched. The eligibility criteria were listed out based on Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome, Study type (PICOS) concept. Results: A total of 148 articles were found by database search strategies and 27 additional studies by hand search. Finally three cross sectional and one longitudinal study were selected based on the eligibility criteria. A meta-analysis was not justified. Risk of bias was assessed using AXIS tool for cross sectional studies and Newcastle-Ottawa scale for longitudinal study. Common weaknesses of the studies were failure to justify or calculate the sample size and insufficient statistical reporting. Conclusion: This review reveals that there is a need for methodologically standardized studies that will throw light on to the physiological importance of labial frenum in the growth of the nasomaxillary complex.

Abstract Introduction The link between metabolic syndrome and depression has always been controversial. Different studies that have examined the relationship between metabolic syndrome and depression have reported different results. Therefore, the goal of the present study was to examine the association between depression and MetS by meta-analysis. Methods Embase, Scopus, PubMed, and ISI were searched for publications in English from January 1990 to February 2020. Search included cohort and cross-sectional studies aimed at examining the association between depression and MetS. The risk of bias was assessed by Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Heterogeneity and publication bias were tested, subgroup analysis and meta-regression were conducted. Results 49 studies with total sample size 399,494 were analyzed. Results indicated the odds of MetS was higher in depressed compared to non-depressed individuals [OR: 1.48; 95 %CI: 1.33–1.64) vs. (OR: 1.38; 95 %CI: 1.17–1.64)]. For cross-sectional studies, depressed patients in Europe (OR = 1.35; 95 %CI: 1.47–1.99) were at higher odds of MetS compared to those in America and Asia. For cohort studies, depressed patients in America (OR = 1.46; 95 %CI: 1.16–1.84) were at higher odds of MetS than those in Europe. Cross-sectional studies indicated women with depression were at higher odds of MetS (OR = 1.95; 95 %CI: 1.38–2.74) compared to men. In both types of studies, the odds of MetS decreased with age. Conclusions Metabolic syndrome is more common in depressed compared to non-depressed individuals.

ABSTRACT Background Even before the onset of age-related diseases, obesity might be a contributing factor to the cumulative burden of oxidative stress and chronic inflammation throughout the life course. Obesity may therefore contribute to accelerated shortening of telomeres. Consequently, obese persons are more likely to have shorter telomeres, but the association between body mass index (BMI) and leukocyte telomere length (TL) might differ across the life span and between ethnicities and sexes. Objective A collaborative cross-sectional meta-analysis of observational studies was conducted to investigate the associations between BMI and TL across the life span. Design Eighty-seven distinct study samples were included in the meta-analysis capturing data from 146,114 individuals. Study-specific age- and sex-adjusted regression coefficients were combined by using a random-effects model in which absolute [base pairs (bp)] and relative telomere to single-copy gene ratio (T/S ratio) TLs were regressed against BMI. Stratified analysis was performed by 3 age categories (“young”: 18–60 y; “middle”: 61–75 y; and “old”: >75 y), sex, and ethnicity. Results Each unit increase in BMI corresponded to a −3.99 bp (95% CI: −5.17, −2.81 bp) difference in TL in the total pooled sample; among young adults, each unit increase in BMI corresponded to a −7.67 bp (95% CI: −10.03, −5.31 bp) difference. Each unit increase in BMI corresponded to a −1.58 × 10−3 unit T/S ratio (0.16% decrease; 95% CI: −2.14 × 10−3, −1.01 × 10−3) difference in age- and sex-adjusted relative TL in the total pooled sample; among young adults, each unit increase in BMI corresponded to a −2.58 × 10−3 unit T/S ratio (0.26% decrease; 95% CI: −3.92 × 10−3, −1.25 × 10−3). The associations were predominantly for the white pooled population. No sex differences were observed. Conclusions A higher BMI is associated with shorter telomeres, especially in younger individuals. The presently observed difference is not negligible. Meta-analyses of longitudinal studies evaluating change in body weight alongside change in TL are warranted.

Introduction: Hypertension is a condition of high blood pressure and as The Silent Killer because most are asymptomatic or asymptomatic. sethat treatment is often too late. The incidence of hypertension is influenced by several factors, such as obesity (obesity), alcohol consumption, sodium intake, and stress. The purpose of this research is to find outdeterminants of the incidence of hypertension in Balekambang Health Center. Method: This type of research is analytic observational using a cross sectional research design. The sampling technique used in this study is Probability Sampling with Simple Random Sampling with a total sample of 86 respondents using the chi square test. Results: The results of this study are the majority of the respondents' ages are included in the early elderly, namely the age of 46-55 years (26.7%), the most gender is female (61.6%) and the majority have low education (65.1%), the majority of respondents do not experience obesity (76.7%), the majority of respondents do not consume alcohol (81.4%), more respondents have high sodium intake (59.3%) and the majority of respondents experience stress (51.2%). Conclusion: The conclusion of this study obtained that the factors associated with the incidence of hypertension are overweight/obesity (p-value = 0.001), sodium intake (p-value = 0.001), and stress (p-value = 0.001). Meanwhile, there is no relationship between the incidence of hypertension and alcohol consumption (p-value = 0.055). Health services can improve health promotion efforts regarding prevention of hypertension cases through education to overcome obesity, alcohol consumption, high sodium intake and stress.

Abstract. Backgrounds: Central obesity, as a pivotal component of metabolic syndrome is associated with numerous co-morbidities. Dietary factors influence central obesity by increased inflammatory status. However, recent studies didn’t evaluate the association between central obesity and dietary inflammation index (DII®) that give score to dietary factors according to their inflammatory potential. In the current systematic review and meta-analysis, we summarized the studies that investigated the association between DII® with central obesity indices in the general populations. Methods: In a systematic search from PubMed, SCOPUS, Web of Sciences and Cochrane electronic databases, we collected relevant studies written in English and published until 30 October 2019. The population of included studies were apparently healthy subjects or individuals with obesity or obesity-related diseases. Observational studies that evaluated the association between DII® and indices of central obesity including WC or WHR were included. Results: Totally thirty-two studies were included; thirty studies were cross-sectional and two were cohort studies with 103071 participants. Meta-analysis of observational studies showed that higher DII® scores were associated with 1.81 cm increase in WC (Pooled weighted mean difference (WMD) = 1.813; CI: 0.785–2.841; p = 0.001). Also, a non-significant increase in the odds of having higher WC (OR = 1.162; CI: 0.95–1.43; p = 0.154) in the highest DII category was also observed. In subgroup analysis, the continent, dietary assessment tool and gender were the heterogeneity sources. Conclusion: The findings proposed that adherence to diets with high DII® scores was associated with increased WC. Further studies with interventional designs are necessary to elucidate the causality inference between DII® and central obesity indices.

ABSTRAKLatar Belakang : Keberadaan kader di posyandu sebagai salah satu sistem penyelenggarakan pelayanan sangat dibutuhkan. Mereka adalah ujung tombak  pelayanan kesehatan yang merupakan kepanjangtanganan puskesmas Jawa Tengah tahun 2011 jumlah gizi kurang 5,35% dan gizi buruk 0,10%. Untuk Kabupaten Semarang dari 23.562 balita yang ditimbang pada tahun 2011 gizi lebih 1,13%, gizi baik 93,51%, gizi kurang 4,86% dan gizi buruk 0,49% (DepKes Prov Jateng, 2011). Tujuan Penelitian : Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan peran kader posyandu dengan status gizi balita. Metode Penelitian : Desain penelitian ini adalah survey analitik dengan menggunakan pendekatan cross sectional. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah seluruh balita di Posyandu Mawar di Desa Gedangan sejumlah 40 responden, dengan teknik total sampling dan analisa data chi square. Hasil Penelitian : Hasil perhitungan chi square di peroleh X² hitung 10.644 pada df=4, P.value 0.031 dimana probabilitas lebih kecil dari level of significant 5 % (0,001 < 0,05) berarti Ha diterima dan Ho ditolak. The chi square calculation results in getting X ² count 10.644 on df = 4, P. value 0.031 where probability is smaller than the level of significant 5% (0.001 < 0.05) mean Ha Ho accepted and rejected. Background Cervical cancer is a preventable disease that contributes significantly to the death of women. This study is aimed at determining the level of knowledge and utilization of cervical cancer screening and its determinants among female undergraduates of Ebonyi State University. Methods A structured questionnaire was used for a cross-sectional survey of the study population between January 1 and March 3, 2018. The data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics version 20. Data were represented with frequency table, simple percentage, mode, range, Chi square and pie chart. The level of significance is at P-value < 0.05. Results Majority (74.8%) of the respondents were aware of cervical cancer and it could be prevented (70.8%). More than three-fifths (68.30%) were informed via health workers, and 86.8% were aware that post-coital vaginal bleeding is a symptom. Less than half (49.8%) knew that HPV is the primary cause, and only 32.9% were aware of the HPV vaccine. One-quarter of the respondent were aware that early coitarche is a risk factor for cervical cancer. Only 41.8% of the women were aware of Pap smear, 9.2% had undergone screening, and 97.6% were willing to be screened. Marital status was the significant determinant of being screened while class level did not significantly influence uptake of cervical cancer screening. The most common reason (20.6%) for not being screened was lack of awareness of the test. Conclusion Our study population had a good knowledge of cervical cancer, but utilization of cervical cancer screening was poor. Awareness creation through the mass media and provision of affordable screening services can promote the use of cervical cancer screening in the study area.

AbstractObjectiveBreakfast skipping has been reported to be associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D), but the results are inconsistent. No meta-analyses have applied quantitative techniques to compute summary risk estimates. The present study aimed to conduct a meta-analysis of observational studies summarizing the evidence on the association between breakfast skipping and the risk of T2D.DesignSystematic review and meta-analysis.SettingRelevant studies were identified by a search of PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and SINOMED up to 9 August 2014. We also reviewed reference lists from retrieved articles. We included studies that reported risk estimates (including relative risks, odds ratios and hazard ratios) with 95 % confidence intervals for the association between breakfast skipping and the risk of T2D.SubjectsEight studies involving 106 935 participants and 7419 patients with T2D were included in the meta-analysis.ResultsA pooled adjusted relative risk for the association between exposure to breakfast skipping and T2D risk was 1·21 (95 % CI 1·12, 1·31; P=0·984; I2=0·0 %) in cohort studies and the pooled OR was 1·15 (95 % CI, 1·05, 1·24; P=0·770; I2=0·0 %) in cross-sectional studies. Visual inspection of a funnel plot and Begg’s test indicated no evidence of publication bias.ConclusionsBreakfast skipping is associated with a significantly increased risk of T2D. Regular breakfast consumption is potentially important for the prevention of T2D.
