AbstractIn accordance with generally accepted accounting standards, most intangibles are not accounted for and not reflected in the traditional financial accounting. For this reason, most companies account intangible assets (IAs) as expenses. In the research, 57 sub-elements of IAs were applied, which are grouped into eight main elements of IAs. The classification of IAs consists in two parts of assets: accounting and non-accounting. This classification can be successfully applied in different branches of enterprises, to expand and supplement the theoretical and practical concepts of the company's financial management. The article proposes to evaluate not only the value of financial information for IAs (accounted) but also the value of non-financial information for IAs (non-accounted), thus revealing the true value of IAs that is available to the companies of Lithuania. It names a value of general IAs. The results of the research confirmed the IA valuation methodology, which allows companies to calculate the fair value of an IA. The obtained extended IAs valuation information may be valuable to both the owners of the company and investors, as this value plays an important practical role in assessing the impact of IAs on the market value of companies.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide evidence of how the business cycle affects net-trade-credit and its components in firms on different tiers of the value chain, including retail, wholesale and two consecutive manufacturing tiers. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected by the means of four surveys in the years 2006, 2009, 2012 and 2014, representing different phases of the business cycle, that is, from strong economic growth to a deep recession and on to slow recovery and finally into decline. Descriptive statistics and three ANOVA models were used in the analysis of the data. Findings The distinctive profile of each value chain tier appears to have an effect on tier-specific trade credit dynamics. Overall, upstream positioned firms and small firms are likely to experience a decline in the net-trade-credit during uncertain economic times. The type of task interdependence between tiers also appears to affect trade credit dynamics in some tiers of the value chain. Furthermore, initiated by recession, certain trade credit dynamics in the value chain suggest a mechanism that transmits an increased working capital burden from customers to suppliers along the value chain. Research limitations/implications Results are based on survey research with a limited amount of respondents and geographical coverage, implying limited generalisability. The use of implicit measures limits the conclusiveness of the research. Originality/value The conventional perception of the power-based determination of trade credit policies is complemented with a value chain-related task interdependence perspective. The results of this paper also highlight that a more holistic value chain perceptive on working capital management would be more sustainable in comparison to firm-centric approaches.

Purpose – In previous research publications the authors combined the available knowledge about obsolescence in a conceptual model for further research on and appliance in the decision making about demolition. Since evidence-based theoretical research references on obsolescence are rare, the model inevitably had an explorative character. The purpose of this paper is to test and elaborate the model. Design/methodology/approach – A series of case studies were conducted in various residential building estates. In each estate the types of obsolescence (according to the model) and their interrelationships were identified. Findings – The model can usefully be applied; it enables the determination of types of obsolescence. The case studies also show that several types of obsolescence occur simultaneously, and that these types can be interrelated. This touches upon the complexity of cause-effect mechanisms as already mentioned in the introduction. One of the weaknesses is that information is sometimes available for only one point in time, and that the availability of information varies with the type of obsolescence. Research limitations/implications – The study is based on a limited selection of case studies. Further, the causal relationships between the types of obsolescence could not always be revealed. Practical implications – The current model does not distinguish between causes and effects. For further development of the model, cause-effect processes have to be further analysed. Social implications – Actual measurement of the extent of obsolescence per type is not part of this study, but has to be carried out before social implications can adequately be indicated. Originality/value – The paper presents a conceptual classification of obsolescence that turns out to be workable when tested in practice.

The scientific research study is about financial methodology analysis improving in the framework of forensic economic examination. The objective bankruptcy date is one of the issues within the forensic examination. The authors propose to supplement the classical financial analysis with a special section, which analyzes transactions for compliance with market conditions, identifies schematic and fictitious transactions, and also determines the degree of their impact on the occurrence of property insufficiency and signs of bankruptcy. The author's classification of possible schematic transactions, as well as methods for establishing the fact of compliance with the market situation are proposed. As the criterion for the maximum permissible deviations of transaction values from market values, it is proposed to use a value in an amount not exceeding the change in values by more than two times. The technical assets identified as a result of fictitious transactions are proposed to be deducted from the market value of assets when calculating the net assets of the organization, which will allow the most correct determination of the objective bankruptcy date.

Aqueous extracts from 30 species of red algae were treated with κ-carrageenase, a specific hydrolase for κ-carrageenin. The total reducing power of the hydrolyzate indicated that the algae could be divided into three groups on the basis of the content of κ-carrageenin. Group 1 included Gigartina acicularis, G. radula, G. pistillata, G. christata, and Iridaea sp. with a low value. Group 2 included Chondrus crispus, G. stellata, G. stiriata, Rhodoglossum affine, Furcellaria fastigiata, and Endocladia muricata, all with values comparable with that in C. crispus. Group 3 included Hypnea musciformis and a Yatabella sp. with a value greater than that for C. crispus. The occurrence of agarose and of κ-carrageenin in the Rhodophyceae is discussed as a factor in their taxonomy.

Grouping of tomato maturity level is one way to pay attention to the quality of the tomatoes. The traditional way takes a long time and low accuracy, since the determination of the level of subjectively assessed. In addition, the importance of the classification of the level of maturity of tomatoes due to a period of tomato maturation process is relatively quick, so it can reduce the risk of rotting tomatoes. The dataset used in this study was 108 tomato image taken using three types of smartphones. The dataset is divided into 66 training data and testing the data 42. Improvements to the image preprocessing stage is done with adaptive histogram equalization and compared with the histogram equalization. In the feature extraction using color features of the R, G, and A *. The classification of the level of maturity of tomato is done by comparing the accuracy of using multi-SVM and KNN. In the Multi-SVM method using the highest percentage of kernel functions RBG is equal to 77.84%. While the method kNN highest percentage was 77.79% using a value of k = 3.

Purpose This study aims to identify various teachers’ professional activities (TPAs) and classify these TPAs according to their relative importance for the professional development of teachers. Design/methodology/approach The systematic review of the literature had been conducted to identify various TPAs in the institutions. Later, an empirical research had been conducted through confirmatory factor analysis using AMOS 20.0 to classify these TPAs according to their relative importance using the natural gap in standardized beta (β) values. In total, 96 administrators of 35 technical institutions of Punjab (India) offering engineering and management programs and 93 veteran educational experts had responded in a field survey. Findings The results of the study identified eight TPAs and further revealed that “regular self-assessment,” “adopting a creative problem-solving approach” and “developing deep commitment to make the difference” qualify among the “most important” activities for the professional enhancement of the faculty. Originality/value The study highlights different TPAs that they must establish, raise, promote, encourage and organize for their development. The study further classifies different activities according to their relative importance. The institute can evaluate their resources, budgets and efforts according to the relative importance of such activities. The classification of TPAs would help faculty to increase their efficacy.

Humans need vitamin A and obtain essential vitamin A by conversion of plant foods rich in provitamin A and/or absorption of preformed vitamin A from foods of animal origin. The determination of the vitamin A value of plant foods rich in provitamin A is important but has challenges. The aim of this paper is to review the progress over last 80 years following the discovery on the conversion of β-carotene to vitamin A and the various techniques including stable isotope technologies that have been developed to determine vitamin A values of plant provitamin A (mainly β-carotene). These include applications from using radioactive β-carotene and vitamin A, depletion-repletion with vitamin A and β-carotene, and measuring postprandial chylomicron fractions after feeding a β-carotene rich diet, to using stable isotopes as tracers to follow the absorption and conversion of plant food provitamin A carotenoids (mainly β-carotene) in humans. These approaches have greatly promoted our understanding of the absorption and conversion of β-carotene to vitamin A. Stable isotope labeled plant foods are useful for determining the overall bioavailability of provitamin A carotenoids from specific foods. Locally obtained plant foods can provide vitamin A and prevent deficiency of vitamin A, a remaining worldwide concern.
