The purpose of this study was to determine the knowledge and use of dietary supplement products (DSP) among the deaf athletes of the Turkish Deaf Sports Federation. A total 74 voluntary athletes from various sports, 11 female and 63 male athletes (Mage=23.62±5.38 years) participated in this study. The data was collected through the survey method and was analyzed by Fischer Exact test, frequencies and percentage distribution. As a result, it has been determined that 39.2% of deaf athletes have knowledge about DSP and athlete diets; their rate of DSP use increases as their educational level increases; the rate of DSP use in national athletes is higher and that taekwondo athletes do not use DSP while a rate of at least 30.8% DSP use is evident in other branches. In addition, the findings show that the deaf athletes do not have sufficient knowledge about their DSP use and they have problems in accessing reliable information about this issue.

Introduction: The use of medication has increased in recent years in the US while the use of dietary supplements has remained stable but high. Interactions between these two kinds of products may have important consequences, especially in the case of widely used medications such as antihypertensives and antibiotics. The aim of this paper is to estimate the prevalence of potentially serious drug–dietary supplement interactions among tetracyclines, thiazides, and angiotensin II receptor blocker users by means of the NHANES 2013–2014 dataset. Methods: Data from 2013–2014 NHANES were obtained. Potential interactions analysed were tetracyclines with calcium, magnesium, and zinc, thiazides with vitamin D, and angiotensin II receptors blockers with potassium. Prevalence was calculated for each potential interaction. Logistic regression was used to assess associated factors. Results: 864 prescriptions issued to 820 patients were analysed. Overall prevalence of potential interaction was 49%. Older age and higher educational level were strongly associated with being at risk of a potential interaction. Factors such as age, race, civil status, citizenship, country of birth, BMI, and physical activity did not show notable associations. Conclusions: Healthcare professionals should be aware of other medical products when they prescribe or dispense a medication or a dietary supplement, especially to the older population and people with a higher educational level.

Stroke survivors and their caregivers report not receiving enough information at discharge. To identify strengths and weaknesses of stroke discharge education, we delivered questionnaires that assessed patient and caregiver recall, perceived utility, and satisfaction at discharge as well as 1- and 3-month follow-up. Categorical data of responses were compared between time periods using Fischer exact test. Recall significantly differed between discharge (86%) and 1-month follow-up (54%, P < .05), but not discharge and 3-month follow-up (69%). Patient perceived utility at both 1 month (69%) and 3 months (64%) was lower than at discharge (92%, P < .05). Patient satisfaction was lower at 1 month (69%) and 3 months (54%) than discharge (92%, P < .05). Caregiver recall declined from discharge (81%) to 1 month (65%) but improved from 1 to 3 months (82%, P < .05). Caregiver satisfaction and perceived utility remained positive through the study. The results suggest stroke patients and their caregivers suffer from education recall failure over time that is associated with worse satisfaction and perceived utility by patients. Reinforcement at 1 month may improve caregiver recall. We conclude that education for caregivers may be more reliably reinforced, suggesting a role in continued patient education.

Background: A suspected peripheral neuropathy outbreak was reported from Dechentsemo Central School, Thinleygang, Punakha, following which the investigation team was immediately dispatched in the field. Objective: The aim of investigation was to ascertain the cause and risk factor for the outbreak in order to implement control measures. Methods: A case control study was devised for the investigation to study about the past exposure or deficiencies in order to find out the suspected cause and risk factors.  A semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire was administered to both cases and controls to collect information on the type of food they have consumed. The information garnered was analyzed using Chi-Square or Fischer Exact test for categorical variables and Man-Whitney U-test for quantitative variables. Results: All 17 cases were females with mean age of 13 years (SD 2.7 years). The average daily amount of thiamine intake was 0.6 mg/day for case and 0.8 mg/day for controls against the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of 1.2 mg/day. Case and control patients differed significantly with respect to fat intake (p-value = 0.02), more strongly with folate and iron intake (p-value 0.01).Conclusion: The outbreak of peripheral neuropathy in Dechentsemo Central School appears to be linked to reduced dietary intake rich in vitamin B1 coupled with low intake of folate and iron in their diet.

Objective: To determine the abnormality of spermatozoa in the contralateral epididymis after unilateral testicular torsion. Material & method: Twenty wistar rats were divided into two groups i.e. Group B (sham procedure) Group A (torsio and orchiectomy 24 hours later), and contralateral epididymectomy was performed a month later. Spermatozoa in the contralateral epididymis are extracted and analyzed by an experienced biologist. Data were analyzed using Chi-square or Fischer exact test. Results: Sperm morphology changes in group B is higher than Group A (6,6% vs 0,5%, p = 0,009). Conclusion: Unilateral testicular torsion causes sperm abnormal morphology in the contralateral epididymis. Keywords: Unilateral testicular torsion, contralateral epididimal spermatozoa.

Objective: To describe the ‘Bird-Winged Coronal-Collar Skin re-arrangement modification’ of the Tubularized Incised Plate (TIP) urethroplasty to preserve the inner preputial skin on the ventral surface of the penile shaft. Material and Method: Study Group: Prospective review of the results of a single surgeon with Bird-Winged Coronal-Collar skin re-arrangement modification of TIP urethroplasty (n=111; mean age 4.9 years) of distal (n=76) and mid-penile (n-35) hypospadias (mean follow-up 37 months). Control Group: Retrospective review of a single surgeon’s results of distal and mid-penile hypospadias repair with standard TIP urethroplasty (2007-11). Outcome parameters (to compare non-inferiority of the modified technique): Urethro-cutaneous fistula (UCF) at voiding trial and follow-up at 3 months, wound infection, complete dehiscence, local edema, meatal stenosis and quality of urinary stream. Statistical analysis was done with the Fischer Exact Test. Results: With this technique, the authors could provide an inner preputial cover on the ventral/ ventro-lateral aspects of distal penile shaft in all but one patient (complete dehiscence). The results of ‘bird-winged coronal-collar skin re-arrangement’ modification were not-inferior/ comparable to those of standard TIP urethroplasty. Conclusions: The modification is technically feasible and reproducible and the overall results of urethroplasty were not inferior to the standard TIPS procedure.

The aim of this research is to identify some of the social factors related to the girls ’attitude towards conspicuous consumption. These factors represent the place of residence, the prevailing pattern of consumption among family members, the educational level of the parents and the occupation of parents. This research relied on the social survey method and questionnaire as a tool to collect data. The sample consisted of 216 Qassim University female students from various disciplines. The research reached several results, namely: that the trend of the sample towards conspicuous consumption is "weak", in addition to the absence of a relationship between the trend towards conspicuous consumption and each of the (place of residence, the prevailing pattern of consumption among family members, the educational level of parents, the occupation of parents) factors. The research highlights the importance of maintaining a low trend towards conspicuous consumption by spreading awareness by educational institutions, media and others, in addition to conducting more extensive studies on " conspicuous consumption" to cover the problem in all its aspects.

Introduction: Foot Abduction Brace is recommended to prevent recurrence after casting phase in Ponseti method. Various types of braces are described, most current braces with proven efficacy are costly(100-300$) and difficult to acquire especially for the common man in India. Steenbeek brace can be made with locally available materials and is very simple to make and is cost effective(10$). Its efficacy is largely untested.Aim: To evaluate effectiveness of Steenbeek foot abduction brace to maintain correction achieved and to study the reasons for failure and complications associated with the brace.Materials and Methods: In KMC Mangalore and allied hospitals between Jun’2014-Aug’2016 25patients (38feet) who were treated by Ponseti method of cast application were given the Steenbeek foot abduction brace and followed up for a minimum duration of 1 year. The Status of foot was assessed using Pirani score before brace application and at every follow-up. Compliance with the brace protocol was assessed and Compliance defined as brace application for 23 hours/day for the first three months, and nap time brace application for rest of the duration of study. Results: In 36 of 38 feet on the brace the correction was maintained(94.7% effective). In two patients(feet) there was worsening of the Pirani score after brace application and recurrence was seen. The reason for failure was found to be non compliance. The correlation between noncompliance and recurrence was significant(p <0.001) using Fischer Exact Test. Pirani score improved significantly in compliant group with significant worsening noted in noncompliant group. There were no other brace related complications. Conclusions: The significant correlation between noncompliance and recurrence shows that Steenbeek FAB is effective in maintaining correction and can be a cost-effective alternative to the more costly braces, for use in developing countries.

AbstractIntroduction Central instability is associated with insufficient endurance and strength of the stabilizer muscles, and it can lead to muscle imbalance and injuries. Objective Relate side bridge performance with the presence of injuries in amateur soccer athletes.Materials and methods A cross-sectional study with a sample of 188 male athletes, aged between 11 and 17 years. To identify the injuries, a questionnaire developed by researchers was applied and the players’ clinical records were reviewed. The time of the side bridge test was used to identify muscle imbalance. For statistical analysis, the following tests were used: chi-square test; Pearson’s chi-square test; Fisher’s exact test; Yates’s correction for continuity; two-way ANOVA; one-way ANOVA; and t-test. The significance level (α) of 5% was adopted. Results Injuries were reported by 59.6% of the athletes: sprain (31.3%); muscle strain (28.6%) and fracture; luxation and subluxation (19.6%) were the most frequently reported injuries. Athletes that reported any injury corresponded to 73.2% of the sample. The presence of injuries was not associated with muscle imbalance (p = 0.565), as it prevailed in athletes with both balance (64%) and imbalance (58%). Injury type and prevalence were not significant when compared with the presence of imbalance (p > 0.05).Final considerations No significant relation between muscle imbalance and injury was observed in the studied sample.

This research focused on evaluation of dissociative lives of male disabled athletes who played in teams of amputee football league and regional wheelchair basketball league. In this research; general survey method, one of the descriptive research methods, was used. As data collection tools; “Personal Information Form”, “Household Income Form” and “The Dissociation Scale Questioner” were used. A total of 92 male disabled participants (55 amputee football players and 37 wheelchair basketball players) were included in the study. There were no significant statistical differences between participants’ dissociation levels and age, educational status, marital status, whether or not being a national player and employment status. However; there was statistically significant difference in terms of use of prostheses-use, sportive branch, household income and time of disability. It may be argued that acquired traumatic events that occur after birth have stronger traumatic life levels/effects compared to congenital traumatic events that occur before or during birth
