Abstract Many metals and alloys have a stress exponent for the creep rate that is considerably higher than the value of 3 that is typically predicted by creep recovery models. One example is pure Ni. Creep data from Norman and Duran that are analyzed in the paper give a stress exponent of about 7 in the temperature range 0.3 to 0.55 of the melting point. It has recently been shown that the high creep exponent of Al and Cu in the power-law break down regime can be explained by the presence of strain-induced vacancies. By applying a creep recovery model that does not involve adjustable parameters, it is shown that strain induced vacancies can also explain the high-stress exponent of pure nickel.

Many materials exhibit a stress range dependent creep behavior. The power-law creep observed for a certain stress range changes to the viscous type creep if the stress value decreases. Recently published experimental data for advanced heat resistant steels indicates that the high creep exponent (in the range 5-12 for the power-law behavior) may decrease to the low value of approximately 1 within the stress range relevant for engineering structures. The aim of this paper is to confirm the stress range dependence of creep behavior based on the experimental data of stress relaxation. An extended constitutive model for the minimum creep rate is introduced to consider both the linear and the power law creep ranges. To take into account the primary creep behavior a strain hardening function is introduced. The material constants are identified for published experimental data of creep and relaxation tests for a 12% Cr steel bolting material at 500°C. The data for the minimum creep rate are well-defined only for moderate and high stress levels. To reconstruct creep rates for the low stress range the data of the stress relaxation test are applied. The results show a gradual decrease of the creep exponent with the decreasing stress level. Furthermore, they illustrate that the proposed constitutive model well describes the creep rates for a wide stress range.

Creep behavior of AM50-0.4% Sb-0.9%Gd alloy has been studied at temperatures ranging from 150 to 200°C and at stresses ranging from 40 to 90 MPa. Results show that the creep rate of AM50-0.4%Sb-0.9%Gd alloy was mainly controlled by dislocation climb at low stresses under 50 MPa. The activation energy for the creep was 131.2 ± 10 kJ/mol and the stress exponent was in the range from 4 to 9 depending on the applied stress. More than one deformation-mechanism were involved during the creep of this alloy. Microstructures of the alloy consist of a–Mg matrix and fine particles, distinguished as Mg17Al12, Sb2Mg3, and Mg2Gd or Al7GdMn5 that were homogeneously distributed in the matrix of the alloy, which effectively reduced the movement of dislocations, enhancing the creep resistance. Many dislocations were identified to be present on non-basal planes after creep deformation.

This paper discusses recent developments in creep, over a wide range of temperature, that mqy change our understanding of creep. The five-power law creep exponent (3.5 to 7) has never been explained in fundamental terms. The best the scientific community has done is to develop a natural three power-law creep equation that falls short of rationalizing the higher stress exponents that are typically five. This inability has persisted for many decades. Computational work examining the stress-dependence of the climb rate of edge dislocations we may rationalize the phenomenological creep equations. Harper-Dorn creep, “discovered” over 60 years ago has been immersed in controversy. Some investigators have insisted that a stress exponent of one is reasonable. Others believe that the observation of a stress exponent of one is a consequence of dislocation network frustration. Others believe the stress exponent is artificial due to the inclusion of restoration mechanisms such as dynamic recrystallization or grain growth that is not of any consequence in the five power-law regime. Also, the experiments in the Harper-Dorn regime, which accumulate strain very slowly (sometimes over a year) may not have attained a true steady state. New theories suggest that absence or presence of Harper-Dorn may be a consequence of the initial dislocation density. Novel experimental work suggests that power-law breakdown may be a consequence of a supersaturation of vacancies which increase self-diffusion.

It is shown that a creep surface, defined in terms of a prescribed creep rate, can be determined from the multiple integral formulation representing the creep data. The creep surface for 304 stainless steel was found to be in good agreement with a Mises ellipse. Observed creep rate vectors for this alloy were found to be normal to a Mises ellipse. These results were obtained from creep tests performed on 304 stainless steel under combined tension and torsion at 593°C (1100°F). Creep strains observed for at least 100 hr were adequately represented by a power function of time, the exponent of which was independent of stress. A third-order multiple integral representation together with a limiting stress below which creep does not occur was employed to describe satisfactorily the constant stress creep data.

Abstract High strength-to-weight ratio, excellent corrosion resistance, flexibility, superior fatigue performance, and cost competitiveness have made thermoplastic fiber reinforced polymer composites (TP-FRPCs) a material of choice for the manufacture of pipe products for use in the oil and gas industry. The TP matrix not only protects the composite structure from brittle cracking caused by dynamic loads, it also provides improved flexibility for bending of pipes to enable easier field installation and reduces the requirement for pre-fabricated bent connections. Despite the attractive mechanical performance, the design, development and qualification evaluation of TP-FRPC components for a large portion relies on experimental testing. The time and expense of manufacturing new composite prototypes and performing full-scale testing emphasizes the value of a predictive modeling. But, modeling TP-FRPC structures is not a trivial task due to their anisotropic and time-dependent properties. In this study, a new technique based on the finite element method is proposed to model anisotropic time-dependent behavior of TP-FRPCs. In the proposed technique the composite mechanical properties are captured by superimposing the properties of two fictitious materials. To that end, two overlapping three-dimensional elements with similar nodes were assigned different material properties. One of the elements is assigned to have time-dependent properties to capture the viscoelastic behavior of the matrix while the other element is given linear anisotropic properties to account for the anisotropy induced by the fiber reinforcement. The model was calibrated using data from uniaxial tensile creep tests on coupons made from pure matrix resin and uniaxial tension tests on TP-FRPC tape parallel to the fiber direction. Combined time hardening creep formulation, ANSYS 19.2 implicit analysis, and ANSYS Composite PrepPost were employed to formulate the three-dimensional finite element model. The model was validated by comparison of model predictions with experimental creep strain obtained from TP FRPC tubes with ±45° fiber layups subjected to uniaxial intermediate and high stress for 8 hours. The results obtained showed that for the tubes subjected to intermediate stress, the model predicted the creep rate in the secondary region with less than 5% error. However, for tubes subjected to high stress, the model overestimated the creep rate with over 30% error. This behavior was due to large deformation at this high level of stress and inability of the model to capture fiber realignment towards the pipe longitudinal direction and, therefore, capture an increase in stiffness. Overall, comparison of the simulation results with experimental data indicated that the technique proposed can be used as a reliable model to account for deformations caused by secondary creep in the design of TP-FRPC structures as far as deformations are relatively small and limited to a certain strain threshold. Acceptable predictions of the model, its simplicity in calibration, and limitations on available models that can simultaneously account for time-dependency and anisotropic properties, further emphasize the value of the developed model.

AbstractAn oxide-dispersion strengthened (ODS) Ni3Al-based alloy has been fabricated and creep tested. Previously reported data for minimum creep rate as a function of stress indicated that two creep mechanisms operate at intermediate temperatures of 732 and 816°C [1]. This paper reports the results of recent interrupted creep tests and fractographic studies which serve to identify the two creep mechanisms. Creep at low stresses or low creep-rates occurs by constrained growth of cavities on transverse grain boundaries. In this low stress region an apparent stress exponent of 5.1 is observed. Creep at high stresses or high creep-rates results from the bulk deformation of grains by power law creep with a much smaller contribution due to grain boundary cavitation. The stress exponents of 13 and 22 observed in this high stress region are typical of ODS alloys. In both regions fracture is observed to be mixed mode with a large transgranular component due to the high grain aspect ratio developed in this material. Limited data at 982°C indicate the occurrence of only one mechanism which can be described by a stress exponent of 9.1. It was not possible, based on fractographic studies, to associate the creep mechanism at 982°C with either of those observed at the intermediate temperatures. No fractographic studies were performed at 649°C due to lack of valid specimens; however, the stress exponent of 13.5 observed at 649°C suggests that creep occurs by deformation of the grains.

In this study, the creep rupture tests of STS304 stainless steels were investigated at three different elevated temperatures of 600, 650 and 700 under the constant creep stresses. Creep rupture characteristics such as creep stress, creep rupture time, steady state creep rate and so on were evaluated. The behaviors of creep rate curve and initial strain are compared at three different elevated temperatures. The stress exponent (n) at 600, 650 and 700 based on steady state creep rate showed 22.5, 20.6 and 11.4 respectively. By increasing the temperature, the stress exponent is decreased. At the temperature of 700, the lowest stress exponents are shown and this behavior is also observed in the case of stress exponent based on rupture time. The creep life prediction by LMP method is presented and the equation of this result is as follows: T(logtr+20)=-0.005152-14.56+24126.

The special test equipment and procedures developed for the evaluation of ultrashort-time elevated-temperature mechanical properties of materials are described herein. The tensile and high-stress creep data obtained for Haynes N-155 alloy sheet are reported. At rapid strain rates, the high-temperature tensile strengths were up to 300 per cent higher than those obtained at conventional testing speeds. At high temperatures and high stress levels, however, creep rates were shown to be extremely rapid, and in most cases, the creep strength became a critical factor. The application of rapid-strain-rate tensile data and high-stress creep data in short-life designs is discussed.

Understanding the time-dependent brittle deformation behavior of concrete as a main building material is fundamental for the lifetime prediction and engineering design. Herein, we present the experimental measures of brittle creep failure, critical behavior, and the dependence of time-to-failure, on the secondary creep rate of concrete under sustained uniaxial compression. A complete evolution process of creep failure is achieved. Three typical creep stages are observed, including the primary (decelerating), secondary (steady state creep regime), and tertiary creep (accelerating creep) stages. The time-to-failure shows sample-specificity although all samples exhibit a similar creep process. All specimens exhibit a critical power-law behavior with an exponent of −0.51 ± 0.06, approximately equal to the theoretical value of −1/2. All samples have a long-term secondary stage characterized by a constant strain rate that dominates the lifetime of a sample. The average creep rate expressed by the total creep strain over the lifetime (tf-t0) for each specimen shows a power-law dependence on the secondary creep rate with an exponent of −1. This could provide a clue to the prediction of the time-to-failure of concrete, based on the monitoring of the creep behavior at the steady stage.
