This paper presents a case study of a physical education program for troubled youth attending an adolescent treatment center. The site selected for study was deliberately chosen due to the alternative nature of the physical education program and its apparent success in helping to connect students to their school environment. The researcher, as bricoleur, used a variety of methodological tools and strategies to collect data that corresponded to the study’s entry question: How does the physical education program work? Constructed from the data is the story of a gymnasium culture that has been carefully crafted to promote physically and psychologically safe participation that is fair and flexible, where students are encouraged to play just for fun, and a lack of competence is positioned as an opportunity to learn. By incorporating the theoretical framework of the “Circle of Courage” (Brendtro, Brokenleg, & Van Bockern, 1998) into the data analysis, this paper is intended to show how physical education can provide a reclaiming versus alienating learning environment for young people.

Abstract: This article analyzes the evolution of the syllabi in physical education and physical activity sciences at the University of León since its introduction in 1987.
The benefits of students participating in good quality physical education (PE) classes within their schools can impact other areas of their lives. The quantity of PE classes available to students, the level of choice, the range of activities and PE pedagogical practices need to be considered in order to maximise student participation and enjoyment levels in PE. The overall aim of this thesis was to determine what perceptions and experiences intermediate aged children have of their physical education classes. The objectives were concerned with the quantity of physical education classes that the students received, the level of choice the students had regarding the types of activities they participated in during PE, whether the students were aware of the possible association between physical fitness and their academic performance and whether the students felt they had an extensive variety of activities available to participate in during their physical education classes. This research utilised a survey based methodology, employing the use of a questionnaire that was completed by a total of 336 children, aged between 11 and 13 years from one Waikato Intermediate School. The findings suggested that the students were generally satisfied with the quality of their PE classes, but they recommended that some adjustments are made to their physical education curriculum and pedagogical practices. Some of these changes, included having PE more regularly, having more choice regarding the types of activities they take part in during PE, and having more diverse types of physical activities. A trend that emerged at the data analysis stage was the number of students, (both boys and girls), who were only interested in continuing on with participation in PE when they get older out of the fear of becoming fat. This issue and some of its consequences are discussed in more detail. Recommendations are made about PE and for further research. The nature and scope of this case study should be seen as a stepping stone for future research into this area of interest, particularly focussing on the experiences and perceptions of the students themselves.

Many issues must be resolved before research on mainstreaming in physical education becomes believable, replicable, and generalizable. Decisions are necessary regarding the standardization of procedures that place atypical students in the mainstream, and clear definitions are needed regarding what constitutes a handicapped student in physical education. Also, agreement is needed on what typifies the makeup of a regular physical education program that serves handicapped students. Additionally, physical education class content and context differs between classes in the same school, making controlled studies nearly impossible to achieve. It is very difficult to select test instruments that are appropriate to both handicapped and nonhandicapped students. Finally, data analysis is a problem because of the unequal numbers of handicapped and nonhandicapped students found in mainstream physical education classes.

The process and impact of a self-responsibility model for delinquency-prone youth was investigated using a variation of the case study method. Ten 4th-grade boys referred by school officials participated in a 6-week special physical education program. Five of the six data sources suggested that (a) the model caused some affective, behavioral, and knowledge changes in the boys, especially in the special program; (b) the experience influenced the special program teacher’s attitudes and values regarding both delinquency-prone youth and the applicability of the model for non-delinquency-prone youth; and (c) the model, with the exception of strategies for transfer, retained its validity throughout the case study. Premises and limitations of the research design are discussed.

Management of infrastructure and facilities is important in physical education, considering that infrastructure is a medium to support the success of learning. This study aims to determine how the management of physical education facilities and infrastructure in State Junior High Schools in North Bengkulu District. This research is a type of qualitative research using a case study research design. Data obtained through interviews, observation, and documentation. The research data were obtained from six sources consisting of the principal, physical education teachers, and facilities and infrastructure staff. This research was conducted at SMPN 02 and 04 North Bengkulu. Data analysis used Miles and Huberman analysis. The results of research on the availability and management of facilities and infrastructure revealed that there were several physical education facilities and infrastructure that were feasible but had their availability. The removal of physical education facilities and infrastructure activities that have not been carried out properly has resulted in many damaged facilities and infrastructure piled up in the warehouse. Drawing on evidence from an Australian physical education teacher education (PETE) program, this paper argues that the preparation of physical education teachers implicates PETE in the trend to proletarianize teachers’ work at the same time that national claims for increased professionalization are being made. The core physical education program and its PETE component was characterized by narrow utilitarian, sexist, scientistic, and technicist approaches to the field of physical education. More specifically, the PETE program represented teaching as technical and unproblematic rather than as a critical and intellectual endeavor, and its faculty and students were accorded a subordinate status within the department.
