THE EFFECT ON VARIATIONS IN DECAY OF MOISTURE CONTENT AND RATE OF GROWTH IN SUBALPINE SPRUCE

The moisture content in subalpine spruce was highest in overstory trees and lowest in understory trees, and it was higher in trees on a moist site than in trees of similar vigor classes on a dry site. Moisture contents of 10% of saturation for the more vigorous trees on the moist site and 7% of saturation for the less vigorous trees on the dry site represented a statistically significant difference which appeared to restrict the development of heartwood fungi to the wetter trees. A similar difference in the moisture content existed between the 1.5-ft. and the 20-ft. level of the trees, the occurrence of fungi being restricted to the wetter basal portion of the stems. In the laboratory, infection did not take place in test blocks at moisture contents lower than 8% of saturation. It is suggested that the threshold moisture content for infection in the trees occurs around the 7 to 8% saturation level. In the laboratory tests a difference in the moisture content of 3.4% of saturation in wood resulted in a statistically significant difference in the rate of decay by Coniophora puteana (Schum. ex Fr.) Karst., but differences in ring frequency and specific gravity in the test pieces corresponding to the differences between these properties in the living trees did not appreciably affect the decay rate. There was no evidence that variations in the distribution of decay-promoting or decay-retarding substances occurred in the trees from the two sites.

This study was carried out to determine the proximate composition of raw milk produced in pastoral settlements. Six hundred pastoralists' raw milk samples were collected from 20 local governments in Adamawa and Taraba states, Nigeria. Milk samples were collected from White Fulani (WF), Red Bororo (RB) and Sokoto Gudali (SG) breeds of cattle and were analyzed for protein, fat, ash and moisture contents. The protein content ranged between 3.62±0.38% -3.95±0.11% in WF, 3.29±0.8% - 3.94±0.10% in RB and 3.31±0.27%- 3.95±0.09% in SG in Adamawa and Taraba states. The fat content ranged between 3.55±0.47% - 3.99±0.03% in WF, 3.98±0.04% - 3.98±0.06% in RB and 3.32±0.20% - 3.45±0.27% in SG. The ash content recorded was between 0.40±0.06% -0.41±0.04% in WF, 0.40±0.06% - 0.43±0.07% in RB and0.39±0.06% - 0.41±0.08% in SG, and the moisture content in Adamawa and Taraba states were between 83.52±2.07% - 84.00±0.57% in WF, 82.28±1.05% - 83.73±0.63% in RB and 82.90±1.48% - 83.56±1.35%in SG. The study from the two states revealed protein value between 3.29± 0.8% - 3.95±0.11%, fat content range of3.32±0.20% - 3.99±0.03%, ash content of between 0.39± 0.06% - 0.43±0.07% and moisture content that ranged between 82.28± 1.05% - 84.00±0.57%. Constituents of milkfrom Taraba state were higher in values than those from Adamawa sate. The statistical analysis of the results at95% confidence level showed significant difference among breeds and states. In comparison, the three breeds that resided in Adamawa state had least values, which could be attributed to herd management practices. This study showed that all the three pastoralists' breeds indicated desirable components in their milk Cross breeding with higher breeds and provision of quality feed and water may lead to better yield in all the breeds in this study.

SUMMARYGrowth performance and carcass quality (linear measurements) were studied in pigs grown from 25 to 90 kg on barley stored and prepared in different ways. Half the barley was dried to about 14% moisture content for storage and half was not dried but treated with 0·8% propionic acid. Each was given after hammer-milling (3·2 mm screen) or rolling. A total of 144 pigs was used at four centres.The performance and carcass quality of pigs given acid-treated barley were as good as those given dried barley. While feed utilization, expressed on the basis of air-dry feed, was poorer for pigs fed on acid-treated barley this difference disappeared when account was taken of the different moisture contents of the barley samples. Pigs fed on diets based on milled barley grew more quickly, had better feed utilization but greater fat measurements than pigs fed on rolled barley. There was a significant interaction between storage method and feed preparation (milling or rolling). Pigs given the acid-treated barley grew more quickly when it was in the milled form than when it was rolled, whereas for the dried barley there was a small, non-significant difference in favour of the rolled form.

In south-eastern Australia, bark of the ‘stringybark’ eucalypt group, and notably that of messmate (Eucalyptus obliqua L’Hér.), is notorious for intense spotting and it is likely that firebrands of this type contribute significantly to loss of life and property during major wildfires. The fuelbed ignition potential by glowing samples was laboratory tested on excised sections of Pinus radiata D. Don litterbed at moisture contents between 2 and 8% and for ‘no-wind’ or for ‘wind’ of 1 m s–1. Prepared samples of outer bark between 0.5 and 1.6 g were combusted until they attained ~20% of initial mass before placement. For ‘no-wind’, flaming ignition did not occur and the probability of glowing ignition appeared to depend on the chance of contact with needles. For ‘wind’, the probability of flaming ignition was a function of sample glowing mass and fuelbed moisture content. Its ignition probability, weight-for-weight, appears to exceed that reported for other forest firebrands, including bark of E. globulus Labill. However, it is likely that the notoriety of messmate bark is also due, in part, to its morphology and in-flight behaviour. It is argued that firebrand laboratory tests to date may poorly reflect the ignition potential of similar samples after flight.

Over this same moisture content range the percentage breakage of triticale seeds varied from 81.34 to 37.77%. Below the moisture contents of 17% for the wheat and 22% for the triticale the percentage breakage of seeds increased dramatically.

2-acetyl-1-pyrroline (2-AP) is the key compound of rice aroma. However, the responses of 2-AP biosynthesis in fragrant rice under different soil moisture and the corresponding mechanism are little known. The present study evaluated the effects of different soil moisture on 2-AP biosynthesis through a pot experiment. Four soil moisture contents, that is, 50% (SM50), 40% (SM40), 30% (SM30), and 20% (SM20), were adopted, and SM50 treatment was taken as control. The pots were weighed and watered to maintain the corresponding soil moisture content. The results showed no significant difference in growth parameters (plant height, stem diameter, and plant dry weight) among all treatments. Compared with SM50, SM40, SM30, and SM20 treatments significantly (p<0.05) increased 2-AP content by 32.81, 23.18, and 53.12%, respectively. Between 20 to 90% higher proline content was observed in SM40, SM30, and SM20 treatments than in SM50. Enzymes including proline dehydrogenase, ornithine transaminase, and 1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthetase exhibited lower activities with soil moisture declined. Higher diamine oxidase activity was observed in SM40, SM30, and SM20 treatments compared with SM50, and real-time PCR analyses showed that transcript level of DAO1 was greatly increased under low soil moisture treatments, especially in SM20 treatment. Transcript levels of PRODH, DAO2, DAO4, DAO5, OAT, P5CS1, and P5CS2 decreased or maintained in SM40, SM30, and SM20 treatments compared with SM50. We deduced that low soil moisture content enhanced 2-AP biosynthesis mainly by upregulating the expression of DAO1 to promote the conversion from putrescine to 2-AP.

Root segments of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) were decayed by Heterobasidion annosum (Fr.) Bref. (=Fomes annosus (Fr.) Karst.) over a broad range of wood (33–317%) and soil (36–259%) moisture contents in modified soil-block tests. Maximum weight loss occurred at 50–286% wood moisture content. Decay was inhibited at wood moisture contents over 290%. Water moved rapidly into the root segments by capillarity, and some decay occurred within 2 weeks. Water uptake was faster in inoculated segments than in noninoculated segments at a soil moisture content of 172% of the 0.2 bar (1 bar = 100 kPa) moisture content.

ABSTRACT The distributions of 13 variables based on 10 laboratory tests measuring thyroid function were studied in euthyroid controls and in patients with toxic diffuse or toxic multinodular goitre. Density functions were fitted to the empirical data and the goodness of fit was evaluated by the use of the χ2-test. In a few instances there was a significant difference but the material available was in some respects too small to allow a very accurate estimation. The normal limits for each variable was defined by the 2.5 and 97.5 percentiles. It appears that in some instances these limits are too rigorous from the practical point of view. It is emphasized that the crossing point of the functions for euthyroid controls and hyperthyroid patients may be a better limit to use. In a preliminary analysis of the diagnostic efficiency the variables of total or free hormone concentration in the blood proved clearily superior to all other variables.

Trees planted from agroforestry practices can become valuable resources in meeting the wood requirements of many nations. Gliricidia sepium is an exotic species introduced to the agricultural sector in Malaysia mainly for providing shade for cocoa and coffee plantations. This study investigates its wood physical properties (specific gravity and moisture content) and fibre morphology (length, lumen diameter and cell wall thickness) of G. sepium at three intervals according to age groups ( three, five and seven years of ages). Specific gravity (0.72) was significantly higher at seven years ofage as compared to five (0.41) and three (0.35) years age group with a mean of 0.43 (p<0.05). Mean moisture content was 58.3% with no significant difference existing between the tree age groups. Fibre diameter (22.4 mm) was significantly lower (p<0.05) for the trees which were three years of age when compared to five and seven years age groups (26.6 mm and 24. 7 mm), respectively. Means of fibre length, lumen diameter and cell wall thickness were 0.83 mm, 18.3 mm, and 6.2 mm, respectively, with no significant differences detected between trees in all age groups. Further calculation on the coefficient of suppleness and runkel ratio suggest that wood from G.sepium may have the potential for insulation board manufacturing and paper making. However, future studies should experiment the utilisation of this species for these products to determine its full potential.
