We present a phytogeographic regionalization based on native woody flora, identifying the most useful taxonomic level, geographic variables, and orographic pattern, selecting Italy as a case study. We generated seven distance matrices among the 20 administrative regions, and using Pearson’s correlation coefficients and PCA, we verified whether distances between regions were invariant across the different sampling strategies. Once this invariance was established, we focused on genera representation. We defined two orographic indices and performed Kruskal–Wish multidimensional scaling and K-means clustering to assess Italy’s phytogeographic regionalization. A major north–south and a minor east–west gradient described the relationships between regions. Floristic diversity was strongly correlated with the region’s orography, with hills being the most important orographic feature that increased plant diversity; the effect of the orographic patterns was independent from the geographic clines observed. Despite the coarse scale, our phytogeographic regionalization comprising six clusters (variables = 133 woody genera) was consistent with previous ones based on the endemic flora (variables = 1371 units) or on bioclimatic approaches. In particular, the phytogeographic uniqueness of Northern and peninsular Italy, and of Sardinia Island, was confirmed. The next step will be to test our method at a finer scale.

<div>CO2 is one of the main actors in the greenhouse effect and its removal from the atmosphere is becoming an urgent need. Thus, CO2 capture and storage (CCS) and CO2 capture and usage (CCU) technologies are intensively investigated as technologies to decrease the concentration</div><div>of atmospheric CO2. Both CCS and CCU require appropriate materials to adsorb/release and adsorb/activate CO2, respectively. Recently, it has been theoretically and experimentally shown that transition metal carbides (TMC) are able to capture, store, and activate CO2. To further improve the adsorption capacity of these materials, a deep understanding of the atomic level processes involved is essential. In the present work, we theoretically investigate the possible effects of surface metal doping of these TMCs by taking TiC as a textbook case and Cr, Hf, Mo, Nb, Ta, V, W, and Zr as dopants. Using periodic slab models with large</div><div>supercells and state-of-the-art density functional theory based calculations we show that CO2 adsorption is enhanced by doping with metals down a group but worsened along the d series. Adsorption sites, dispersion and coverage appear to play a minor, secondary constant effect. The dopant-induced adsorption enhancement is highly biased by the charge rearrangement at the surface. In all cases, CO2 activation is found but doping can shift the desorption temperature by up to 135 K.</div>

We use ERA-Interim reanalysis, MLS observations, and a trajectory model to examine the chemical transport and tracers distribution in the Upper Troposphere and Lower Stratosphere (UTLS) associated with an east-west oscillation case of the anticyclone in 2016. The results show that the spatial distribution of water vapor (H2O) was more consistent with the location of the anticyclone than carbon monoxide (CO) at 100 hPa, and an independent relative high concentration center was only found in H2O field. At 215 hPa, although the anticyclone center also migrated from the Tibetan Mode (TM) to the Iranian Mode (IM), the relative high concentration centers of both tracers were always colocated with regions where upward motion was strong in the UTLS. When the anticyclone migrated from the TM, air within the anticyclone over Tibetan Plateau may transport both westward and eastward but was always within the UTLS. The relative high concentration of tropospheric tracers within the anticyclone in the IM was from the east and transported by the westward propagation of the anticyclone rather than being lifted from surface directly. Air within the relative high geopotential height centers over Western Pacific was partly from the main anticyclone and partly from lower levels.

Accurate dynamic characteristics of super high-rise buildings serve as a guide in their construction and operation. Ground-based real aperture radar (GB-RAR) techniques have been applied in monitoring and analyzing the dynamic characteristics of different buildings, but only few studies have utilized them to derive the dynamic characteristics of super high-rise buildings, especially those higher than 400 m and under construction. In this study, we proposed a set of technical methods for monitoring and analyzing the dynamic characteristics of super high-rise buildings based on GB-RAR and wavelet analysis. A case study was conducted on the monitoring and analysis of the dynamic characteristics of the Wuhan Greenland Center (WGC) under construction (5–7 July 2017) with a 636 m design height. Displacement time series was accurately derived through GB-RAR and wavelet analysis, and the accuracy reached the submillimeter level. The maximum horizontal displacement amplitudes at the top of the building in the north–south and east–west directions were 18.84 and 15.94 mm, respectively. The roof displacement trajectory of the WGC was clearly identified. A certain negative correlation between the temperature and displacement changes at the roof of the building was identified. Study results demonstrate that the proposed method is effective for the dynamic monitoring and analysis of super high-rise buildings with noninvasive and nondestructive characteristics.

Category: Other Introduction/Purpose: While the etiology of injuries is multifactorial, impact loading, as measured by the loadrate of the vertical ground reaction force has been implicated. These loadrates are typically measured with a force plate. However, this limits the measure of impacts to laboratory environments. Tibial acceleration, another measure of running impacts, is considered a surrogate for loadrate. It can be measured using new wearable technology that can be used in a runner’s natural environment. However, the correlation between tibial acceleration measured from mobile devices and vertical ground reaction force loadrates, measured from forceplates, is unknown. The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation between vertical and resultant loadrates to vertical and resultant tibial acceleration across different footstrike patterns (FSP) in runners. Methods: The study involved a sample of convenience made up of 169 runners (74 F, 95 M; age: 38.66±13.08 yrs) presenting at a running injury clinic. This included 25 habitual forefoot strike (FFS), 17 midfoot strike (MFS) and 127 rearfoot strike (RFS) runners. Participants ran on an instrumented treadmill (average speed 2.52±0.25 m/s), with a tri-axial accelerometer attached at the left distal medial tibia. Only subjects running with pain <3/10 on a VAS scale during the treadmill run were included to reduce the confounding effect of pain. Vertical average, vertical instantaneous and resultant instantaneous loadrates (VALR, VILR and RILR) and peak vertical and resultant tibial accelerations (VTA, RTA) were averaged for 8 consecutive left steps. Correlation coefficients (r) were calculated between tibial accelerations and loadrates. Results: All tibial accelerations were significantly correlated across all loadrates, with the exception of RTA with VILR for FFS (Table 1) which was nearly significant (p=0.068). Correlations ranged from 0.37-0.82. VTA was strongly correlated with all loadrates (r = 0.66). RTA was also strongly correlated with both loadrates for RFS and MFS, but only moderately correlated with loadrates for FFS (r = 0.47). Correlations were similar across the different loadrates (VALR, VILR, RILR). Conclusion: The stronger correlation between vertical tibial acceleration and all loadrates (VALR, VILR, RILR) suggests that it may be the best surrogate for loadrates when studying impact loading in runners.

Growth pattern of pama croaker Otolithoides pama population in the Bay of Bengal was determinedas the corollary of relationships between standard length (SL) and total length (TL), the two most prevalentlyused linear dimensions of fin fish species. Monthly pama croaker samples were collected from the industrialfisheries in the Bay of Bengal. The length-length relationship was constructed algebraically in the form ofy=a+bx. Relationships between SL and TL for male, female and unsexed populations were separatelyestablished. Sex ratio between male and female did not deviate from the parity (?2 test; p>0.05). The SL andTL ranges of male were 7.2-22 cm and 9.5-28 cm respectively, and the SL and TL ranges of female were6.8-20 cm and 8.4-25.7 cm respectively. Intercept and slope varied monthly in all length-length relationshipsregardless of gender categories. The generalized SL-TL relationships of male, female and unsexedpopulations were TL=1.214SL+0.761(R=0.989), TL=1.212SL-0.770(R=0.990) and TL=1.203SL+0.904(R=0.987) respectively. The correlation coefficients of both monthly and generalized regression analyses ofall sex types were very high (R?0.852) which explained that the relationships between the two lengthdimensions were strongly correlated. The growth corollary appeared both as isometric and allometric formonthly populations. Allometric growth was apparent in July, August and September in all gender types,while isometric growth was deduced in other months. This study would be useful for future research in orderto make comparisons with the relevant aspects of O. pama population between years and locations in the Bayof Bengal.

In this study, the researcher has explored and described K-12 school teachers’ perceptions of multicultural education and their professional preparation to teach culturally diverse students in a Northwest Florida school district. This was a descriptive study, combining quantitative and qualitative research methods. A proportionate stratified random sample of 150 K-12 teachers was used for the survey and a case study of 15 teachers for the interviews. Correlation coefficients and ANOVA results determined overall significantly low correlations between teachers’ demographics and their perceptions. Previous research and the findings from this study indicate a need for effective preparation in multicultural education for teachers of culturally diverse students.

In this study I investigated the development of complexity, accuracy, and fluency (CAF) in the English writing of 2 Japanese university students of elementary-to-low-intermediate English proficiency over the course of 1 academic year. Data were analyzed from a dynamic systems theory (DST) perspective using min-max graphs, moving correlation coefficients, and a Monte Carlo analysis. The findings show that (a) the CAF measures followed nonlinear trajectories in their development, (b) they often did not correlate positively with one another, and (c) they sometimes showed signs of improvement during phases of high intravariability. The findings suggest that to understand the developmental trajectories and processes involved in language development more deeply, cross-sectional studies of developmental trends of groups should be supplemented with longitudinal studies that examine language development in individual learners. 本研究では日本人大学生(初級から中級下レベル)二名の英文ライティングの熟達度を一年間にわたり、複雑さ、正確さ、流暢さ (complexity, accuracy, and fluency: CAF) の指標から調査を行った。データ分析はダイナミックシステム理論の観点から、ミニマックスグラフ、移動相関係数、モンテカルロ分析を使用して行った。その結果、(a) 両者のCAFの発達軌跡は非線形であり、(b) CAFのすべてが互いに正の相関関係をとることはほぼなかった。さらに (c) 学習者個人内のCAFの軌跡が大きく変動した後に発達の兆候がみられることがあった。本結果から、言語発達の軌跡やそのプロセスをさらに理解するためには、グループ間を比較する横断研究を、個々の学習者を調査する長期的研究で補完することを提案する。

The study is qualitative in nature using the content analysis method of research. The core objective of the study has been to gauge and compare the values in the textbooks during two eras; viz, General Zia-ul-Haq (1978-1988) and Post-2010 democratic regimes. For this purpose, the textbooks of two different time periods have been selected – primary level (grade I to V) English (as a subject) textbooks published by the Punjab Textbook Board during General Zia-ul-Haq regime and the same level English textbooks published by the Punjab Textbook Board during post-2010 democratic regimes. The human values such as tolerance, patience, empathy, honesty, justice, equity, and humanism have been divided into some categories with further subcategories as indicators to match with the content of textbooks. The collected data revealed that neither the textbooks during the Zia-ul-Haq period nor the textbooks of post-2010 regimes promoted these values in the students, as they ought to be. A minor percentage of human values have been found in the textbooks of both eras.
