Investigation of Texture Effects at Interlayer Bonding Behavior Between AC Overlay on PCC

Slippage cracking in asphalt overlays occurs as a result of bonding failure between the AC and PCC layers. Direct shear test has been adopted to simulate the common and critical bonding failure. The effects of temperature and tack coat has already been studied by previous researchers, but the effects of texture were insufficiently considered. This study used the clamping shear strength to characterize the pure shear strength in pavement. It is defined as the difference between the total shear strength and the plain shear strength. The results showed that the interlayer behaved in an elastic manner at lower temperatures, generating brittle failures with cracking, whereas viscoelastic behavior dominated at higher temperatures, producing ductile failure that lead to slippage at the interface layer. Surface texture effects can be quantitatively characterized using clamping shear strength, and clamping shear strength can be used to optimize asphalt mixture in enhancing bonding performance.

This study mainly investigates the prediction models of shear parameters and dynamic creep instability for asphalt mixture under different high temperatures to reveal the instability mechanism of the rutting for asphalt pavement. Cohesive force c and internal friction angle φ in the shear strength parameters for asphalt mixture were obtained by the triaxial compressive strength test. Then, through analyzing the influence of different temperatures on parameters c and φ, the prediction models of shear strength parameters related to temperature were developed. Meanwhile, the corresponding forecast model related to confining pressure and shear strength parameters was obtained by simplifying the calculation method of shear stress level on the failure surface under cyclic loading. Thus, the relationship of shear stress level with temperature was established. Furthermore, the cyclic time FN of dynamic creep instability at 60 °C was obtained by the triaxial dynamic creep test, and the effects of confining pressure and shear stress level were considered. Results showed that FN decreases exponentially with the increase in stress levels under the same confining pressure and increases with the increase in confining pressure. The ratio between shear stress level and corresponding shear strength under the same confining pressure was introduced; thus, the relationship curve of FN with shear stress level can eliminate the effect of different confining pressures. The instability prediction model of FN for asphalt mixture was established using exponential model fitting analysis, and the rationality of the model was verified. Finally, the change rule of the parameters in the instability prediction model was investigated by further changing the temperature, and the instability forecast model in the range of high temperature for the same gradation mixture was established by the interpolation calculation.

AbstractThe effect of ice content and normal load on the shear strength characteristics of a frozen coarse granular debris was investigated. 31 shear tests were carried out in a modified shearbox allowing a sample temperature of (–1.0 ± 0.2)° C and a load rate of 9.63 × 10−4 cm/min. The tests showed that as the ice content of the frozen debris was increased from 0% (under-saturated) to 25% (saturated), sample shear strength was markedly increased. In contrast, sample shear strength was reduced as ice content was increased from 25% (saturated) to 100% (supersaturated). The changes in shear strength with increasing ice content were attributed directly to changes in internal friction and the cohesive effects of the pore ice. The shear tests also indicate that shear strength increases with increasing normal load up to a critical limit. Above this limit, dilatancy is suppressed causing the shear strength to decrease or remain relatively constant with increased normal load.The stress-strain curves of the 31 tests indicated that samples with higher ice contents tended to reach peak strength (τP) with less displacement during shear. Moreover, the difference between τp and τr (residual strength) was lowest for pure polycrystalline ice and highest for ice-saturated samples. The Mohr-Coulomb failure envelopes displayed very distinctive parabolic curvilinearity. The degree of curvature is thought to be a function of ice creep at low normal loads and particle fracture and crushing at high normal loads.

Slip inception mechanism is very important for modeling of static friction and understanding of some experimental observations of friction. In this work, slip inception was treated as a local competence of interfacial bonding failure and weaker material failure. At any contacting point, if bond shear strength is weaker than softer material shear strength, slip inception is governed by interfacial bonding failure. Otherwise, it is governed by softer material failure. Considering the possible co-existence of these two slip inception mechanisms during presliding, a hybrid static friction model for smooth dry contact was proposed, which indicates that the static friction consists of two components: one contributed by contact area where bonding failure is dominant and the other contributed by contact area where material failure is dominant. With the proposed static friction model, the effects of contact pressure, the material properties, and the contact geometry on static friction were discussed.

AZ31 Mg / 5083 Al clad sheet was fabricated by the hot rolling method and its mechanical properties were investigated in this study. The tensile strength and yield strength of Mg- Al clad samples were slightly higher than that of AZ31 Mg sample, resulting in high strength 5083 Al alloy. Also, in the case of the AZ31 Mg sample, tensile strength indicated different values to the rolling directions. The thickness of interface layers between magnesium and aluminum materials increased with increasing rolling temperature. The thickness of interface layer was about 1.2 μm and 1.6 μm, respectively. The difference of thickness on the interface layer with variation of rolling temperature was attributed to promote the diffusion between magnesium and aluminum materials. The Vickers hardness of Mg-Al interface layer was around 125 Hv. The interface layer composed of hard inter-metallic phases which may act a increment of Vickers hardness depending upon its thickness.

When the various reinforced concrete structures are designed according to EC2 and STR, the difference of calculation results, is quite significant. In this article the calculations of shear strength of bending reinforced concrete elements are investigated according to these standards. The comparison of such calculations is also significant in the sense that the shear strength calculations are carried out according to different principles. The STR regulations are based on work of the shear reinforcement crossing the oblique section and the compressed concrete at the end of the section. In this case, at the supporting zone, the external bending moment and shear force should be in equilibrium with the internal forces in reinforcement and compressed concrete, i.e., the cross section must be checked not only from the external shear force, but also from bending moment. In EC2 standard, the shear strengths are calculated according to simplified truss model, which consists of the tension shear reinforcement bars and compressed concrete struts. The bending moment is not estimated. After calculation analysis of these two methods the relationships between shear strength and various element parameters are presented. The elements reinforced with stirrups and bends are investigated additionally because in EC2 this case is not presented. According to EC2 the simplified truss model solution depends on the compression strut angle value θ, which is limited in certain interval. Since the component of tension reinforcement bar directly depends on the angle θ and the component of compression strut depends on it conversely, then exists some value θ when the both components are equal. So the angle θ can be found when such two components will be equated. However, such calculation of angle θ became complicated if the load is uniform, because then the components of tension bar are estimated not in support cross section but in cross section that are displaced by distance d. So, the cube equation should be solved. For simplification of such solution the graphical method to find out the angle θ and the shear strength are presented. In these graphics the intersection point of two components (shear reinforcement and concrete) curves describes the shear strength of element. Nustačius EC2 metodikos dėsningumus siūlomas alternatyvus apytikslis skaičiavimo būdas atlankomis ir apkabomis armuotiems elementams. Straipsnyje apžvelgtos abi – STR ir EC2 – metodikos, išskiriant pagrindinius skirtumus ir dėsningumus.

The main mechanical and physical quantities and concepts ruling deformation, fracture, and friction processes are recalled, with particular attention paid to the simplicity of the analysis, but without betraying the scientific validity of the arguments. We particularly discuss the difference between between elastic and plastic deformation, and quasistatic and dynamic loadings, essential in avalanche triggering mechanisms. The physical origin of Griffith’s rupture criterion that rules both fracture nucleation and propagation, and the transition between brittle and ductile failure processes, is thoroughly discussed. We also explain the physical meaning of the classical Coulomb’s friction law, showing why it can hardly apply to a non-conventional porous, brittle, and healable solid like snow.

In the present study, bio-oil produced from vacuum pyrolysis of woody biomass has been investigated as a source of chemical feedstock. Bio-based resins were produced using the bio- oil with phenol substitutions ranging from 10 to 30 wt%. The conventional GC/MS analysis was carried out for the evaluation of the chemical composition of bio-oil. TGA, DSC and FT-IR analyses were used in order to characterize the bio-oil-phenol-formaldehyde (BPF) resins. The bonding quality of wood samples bonded with the BPF resins was investigated under different pre-treatment conditions. The highest shear strength was observed for the control samples bonded with the laboratory PF resin. As the amount of bio-oil was increased up to 30 wt%, the shear strength of the samples decreased from 12.08 to 11.76 N/mm2. The bonding performance was not negatively affected by the combination of bio-oil under dry conditions. According to TS EN 12765 standard, the relevant performance requirements for bonded samples under dry conditions must be at least 10 N/mm2. Relating to the standard, all samples bonded with BPF resins obtained the requirements for durability class C1. Under wet conditions, the bonding performance was negatively affected by the addition of bio-oil. However, the BPF resins fulfilled the durability requirements for C1, C2, and C3 specified in EN 12765 (2002).

To broaden the application of the basalt fiber in the preventive maintenance of asphalt pavement, this study investigated the bonding performance and evaluated the comprehensive performance of the basalt fiber asphalt macadam seal. Firstly, different types of basalt fiber asphalt macadam seal were prepared. The influences of content and length of the basalt fiber and dosage of emulsified asphalt on the bonding performance of the asphalt macadam seal were analyzed and compared. Next, by using the efficacy coefficient method, comprehensive performance considering both mechanical and economic characteristics of the basalt fiber asphalt macadam seal was evaluated. After that, reasonable content of each material was determined. Finally, the strengthening mechanism of the fiber on the bonding performance of macadam seals was revealed from a microscopic view. The results showed that compared with the ordinary asphalt macadam seal, the loss aggregate rate of the basalt fiber asphalt macadam seal was 11.0–30.5% lower, and the pull-out strength, shear strength, and torsional shear strength were 11.7–16.3%, 9.7–22.4%, and 4.2–20.6% higher, respectively. Considering the bonding performance and economic benefits, the optimal amount of emulsified asphalt and basalt fiber was 1.6 kg/m2 and 70 g/m2, respectively. Basalt fiber increased the cohesion of the asphalt material and improved the bonding performance of asphalt macadam seals through formation of the three-dimensional network structure. This study can provide reference to the application of basalt fibers in asphalt pavement maintenance.
