One main problem of quantum control in quantum systems is the manipulation of states including state transfer and state tracking. We design control fields to realize arbitrary state transfer for open quantum system by Lyapunov stability theory, and investigate the state transfer for non-Markovian system with phase relaxation and energy dissipative relaxation. The numerical simulations illustrate that arbitrary state (eigenstate, superposition state or mixed state) transfer and maintenance for non-Markovian system can be realized under Lyapunov control function by an external steady control field of proper amplitude, with a success rate of more than 98%. When the right control field and function are implemented, not only the decoherence is compensated completely but also the purity of quantum states is maintained in the process of state transfer.

Preterm birth has been associated with altered cardiac phenotype in adults. Our aim was to test the hypothesis that children surviving extremely preterm birth have important structural or functional changes of the right heart or pulmonary circulation. We also examined relations between birth size, gestational age, neonatal diagnoses of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) with cardiac outcomes. We assessed a population-based cohort of children born in Sweden before 27 weeks of gestation with echocardiography at 6.5 years of age (n = 176). Each preterm child was matched to a healthy control child born at term. Children born preterm had significantly smaller right atria, right ventricles with smaller widths, higher relative wall thickness and higher estimated pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) than controls. In preterm children, PVR and right ventricular myocardial performance index (RVmpi’) were significantly higher in those with a PDA as neonates than in those without PDA, but no such associations were found with BPD. In conclusion, children born extremely preterm exhibit higher estimated PVR, altered right heart structure and function compared with children born at term.

AbstractAsymmetry characterizes the brain in both structure and function. Anatomical asymmetries explain only a fraction of functional variability in lateralization, with structural and functional asymmetries developing at different periods of life and in different ways. In this work, we perform a scoping review of the cerebral asymmetries in the first brain development phases. We included all English-written studies providing direct evidence of hemispheric asymmetries in full-term neonates, foetuses, and premature infants, both at term post-conception and before. The final analysis included 57 studies. The reviewed literature shows large variability in the used techniques and methodological procedures. Most structural studies investigated the temporal lobe, showing a temporal planum more pronounced on the left than on the right (although not all data agree), a morphological asymmetry already present from the 29th week of gestation. Other brain structures have been poorly investigated, and the results are even more discordant. Unlike data on structural asymmetries, functional data agree with each other, identifying a leftward dominance for speech stimuli and an overall dominance of the right hemisphere in all other functional conditions. This generalized dominance of the right hemisphere for all conditions (except linguistic stimuli) is in line with theories stating that the right hemisphere develops earlier and that its development is less subject to external influences because it sustains functions necessary to survive.

The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate whether transcranial static magnetic field stimulation (tSMS), which can modulate cortical excitability, would influence inhibitory control function when applied over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). Young healthy adults (n = 8, mean age ± SD = 24.4 ± 4.1, six females) received the following stimulations for 30 min on different days: (1) tSMS over the left DLPFC, (2) tSMS over the right DLPFC, and (3) sham stimulation over either the left or right DLPFC. The participants performed a Go/NoGo task before, immediately after, and 10 min after the stimulation. They were instructed to extend the right wrist in response to target stimuli. We recorded the electromyogram from the right wrist extensor muscles and analyzed erroneous responses (false alarm and missed target detection) and reaction times. As a result, 50% of the participants made erroneous responses, and there were five erroneous responses in total (0.003%). A series of statistical analyses revealed that tSMS did not affect the reaction time. These preliminary findings suggest the possibility that tSMS over the DLPFC is incapable of modulating inhibitory control and/or that the cognitive load imposed in this study was insufficient to detect the effect.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore experiences of team culture, structure and function of an intensive support service (ISS) within the context of the recent service guidance “Building the Right Support” (NHS England, Local Government Association and Association of Directors of Adult Social Services, 2015). Reflections on the Hampshire and Southampton ISS set up in 2010 are discussed with a view to informing a debate about frameworks for ISS services nationally. Design/methodology/approach A reflective piece, drawing on experience and case examples. Findings This paper describes that a key function of an ISS is making individuals safe and this is significantly assisted by using shared team formulation, which can enable information and perspectives to be shared between and within teams as rapidly as possible. Further, a case is made for recognising the importance of inter-disciplinary practice, as the Southampton and Hampshire ISS has removed the “old fashioned” demarcations that led to individuals seeing a “procession” of different professionals from different disciplines. This relates to team structure, but importantly is about a culture of holding a shared identity based on positive behavioural support values, rather than a traditional uni-disciplinary perspective. Practical implications ISS models are being proposed by NHS England and this paper suggests some important practical aspects. Originality/value Limited literature exists examining the team culture within ISSs, which contributes to desired outcomes for service users. This paper opens a debate about structural and functional aspects of service delivery in this service model.

We present a new analysis on the quantum control for a quantum system coupled to a quantum probe. This analysis is based on the coherent control for the quantum system and a hypothesis that the probe can be prepared in specified initial states. The results show that a quantum system can be manipulated by probe state-dependent coherent control. In this sense, the present analysis provides a new control scheme which combines the coherent control and state preparation technology.

We investigated the local in vivo action of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a potent monocyte activator, and of macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF), a hemopoietic growth factor influencing monocyte differentiation, on bone resorption in normal female 8-wk-old rats. LPS (2 injections of 0.5 microgram), M-CSF (2 injections of either 12.5, 25, 100, or 500 ng), or vehicle was injected into bone marrow space through a thin catheter implanted, under hydrochloride anesthesia, in the distal end of the right femur. Histomorphometry was performed after staining of the tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP). The number of osteoclasts and of TRAP-positive marrow cells (considered as osteoclast precursors) were counted in the secondary spongiosa. LPS caused a 3-fold increase in osteoclast surface, a 4.5-fold increase in the number of osteoclasts, but no change in the number of TRAP-positive marrow cells. M-CSF induced a striking dose-dependent biphasic effect on the number of TRAP-positive marrow cells and on bone resorption (no change with the lowest or with the highest concentrations, although the two intermediate doses significantly increased resorption surfaces and the number of osteoclasts). Our results demonstrate a local in vivo effect of LPS and of M-CSF on bone resorption and suggest that these substances act at different stages of osteoclast development and function.

Theories of quantum control have, until recently, made the assumption that the Hilbert space of a quantum system can be truncated to finite dimensions. Such truncations, which can be achieved for most quantum systems via bandwidth restrictions, have enabled the development of a rich variety of quantum control and optimal control schemes. Recent studies in quantum information processing have addressed the control of infinite-dimensional quantum systems such as the quantum states of a trapped-ion. Controllability in an infinite-dimensional quantum system is hard to prove with conventional methods, and infinite-dimensional systems provide unique challenges in designing control fields. In this paper, we will discuss the control of a popular system for quantum computing the trapped-ion qubit. This system, modeled by a spin-half particle coupled to a quantized harmonic oscillator, is an example for a surprisingly rich variety of control problems. We will show how this infinite-dimensional quantum system can be examined via the lens of the Finite Controllability Theorem, two-color STIRAP, the generalized Heisenberg system, etc. These results are important from the viewpoint of developing more efficient quantum control protocols, particularly in quantum computing systems. This work shows how one can expand the scope of quantum control research to beyond that of finite-dimensional quantum systems.
