Two experimental methods, a dielectric spectroscopic technique and a channel flow technique, have been found to provide reasonable estimates of an ER fluid's response time. The dielectric data obtained for an ER fluid was adequately modeled using a well established Cole-Cole relationship for a symmetric distribution of relaxation times. A calculation of the particle's conductivity in the ER fluid also was found to be possible using the measured dielectric data. The response time obtained with the channel flow technique was in good agreement with the measured response time of a working ER fluid device.

In hydraulic components, nonlinearities are responsible for critical behaviors that make it difficult to realize a reliable mathematical model for numerical simulation. With particular reference to hydraulic spool valves, the viscous friction coefficient between the sliding and the fixed body is an unknown parameter that is normally set a posteriori in order to obtain a good agreement with the experimental data. In this paper, two different methodologies to characterize experimentally the viscous friction coefficient in a hydraulic component with spool are presented. The two approaches are significantly different and are both based on experimental tests; they were developed in two distinct laboratories in different periods of time and applied to the same flow compensator of a pump displacement control. One of the procedures was carried out at the Fluid Power Research Laboratory of the Politecnico di Torino, while the other approach was developed at the University of Parma. Both the proposed methods reached similar outcomes; moreover, neither method requires the installation of a spool displacement transducer that can significantly affect the results.

Currents drawn under high fields often present practical limitations to electrorheological (ER) fluids usefulness. For heavy-duty applications where large torques have to be transmitted, the power consumption of a ER fluid can be considerable, and for such uses a current density of ~100μ A cm -2 is often taken as a practical upper limit. This investigation was conducted into designing a fluid which has little extraneous conductance and therefore would demand less current. Selected semi-conducting polymers provide effective substrates for ER fluids. Such polymers are soft insoluble powdery materials with densities similar to dispersing agents used in ER formulations. Polyaniline is a semi-conducting polymer and can be used as an effective ER substrate in its emeraldine base form. In order to provide an effective ER fluid which requires less current polyaniline was coated with an insulating polymer. The conditions for coating was established for lauryl and methyl methacrylate. Results from static yield measurements indicate that ER fluids containing coated polyaniline required less current than uncoated polyaniline i.e. 0.5μ A cm -2. The generic type of coating was also found to be important.

This article demonstrates new observation of the high-resolution ro-vibrational bichromatic photoassociation spectra (BPAS) of Cs2 in the 0u+ long-range state below the asymptotes 6S1/2 + 6P1/2. By combining with a modulation spectroscopic technique, precise references of the frequency differences have been engineered through the BPAS, with which the rotational constants of low-lying vibrational levels of the Cs20u+ long-range state have been accurately determined by fitting the frequency differences to the non-rigid-rotor model. The rotational constants for the newly observed seven ro-vibrational levels are summarized and disagreement for the level ῦ = 498 is clarified. The rotational constants of different vibrational levels demonstrate strong perturbations of the related energy structures. A simple analysis is performed and shows good agreement with experimental results.

The dielectric relaxation processes of acetone, cyclohexanone, 4-methyl-2-pentanone, and 4-heptanone in dilute nonpolar solvents, n-heptane, cyclohexane, benzene, and carbon tetrachloride have been studied in the microwave region over a temperature range 10 to 60 °C. The relaxation times and the thermodynamic parameters for the activated states have been determined using the measured dielectric data. The results have been discussed in terms of dipole reorientation by molecular and intramolecular rotation and compared, wherever possible, with other similar studies on aliphatic molecules.

The dielectric absorption of quinoline, isoquinoline, and their binary mixtures has been studied in the microwave region over a range of temperatures in dilute benzene and n-heptane solutions. The relaxation times and the thermodynamic parameters for the activated state have been determined using the measured dielectric data. The results obtained have been discussed in terms of the molecular motion of the system. A relation has been proposed to represent the relaxation behavior of a system of two Debye-type polar components in a non-polar solvent. The relation has been tested by comparing the calculated values with those determined experimentally for a few systems consisting of similar, simple rigid polar molecules.

The recently developed pyroelectric spectroscopic technique has been used to measure the thermal diffusivity of solids. The method has been applied to conductors and insulator where by the thermal wave is measured at various lateral distances on the sample between laser illuminated line and pyroelectric sensor position. The thermal diffusivity is obtained from the gradient of the plot of thermal wave signal versus the lateral distance. A good agreement to the previously reported thermal diffusivity value has been obtained for aluminium, copper and spray paint that is 0.809 cm2s-1, 1.128 3cm2s-1 and 1.547 x 10-3 cm2s-1 respectively.

Abstract. The degree of cross-linking and curing is one of the most important values concerning the quality of cross-linked polyethylene (PE-X) and the functionality of adhesives and resin-based components. Up to now, the measurement of this property has mostly been time-consuming and usually destructive. Within the shown work the feasibility of single-sided nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) for the non-destructive determination of the degree of cross-linking and curing as process monitoring was investigated. First results indicate the possibility of distinguishing between PE-X samples with different degrees of cross-linking. The homogeneity of the samples and the curing kinetics of adhesives can also be monitored. The measurements show good agreement with reference tests (wet chemical analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, dielectric analysis). Furthermore, the influence of sample temperature on the characteristic relaxation times can be observed.

This article presents a control performance comparison of electrorheological (ER) fluid-based valves between cylindrical and plate configurations. After identifying Bingham characteristics of chemical starch-based ER fluid, an analytical model of each valve is established. In order to reasonably compare valve performance, design constraint is imposed by the choosing the same electrode gap and length, and each ER valve is manufactured. Valve performances such as pressure drop and response time are then evaluated and compared through analytical model and experiment. In addition, a time-varying pressure tracking controllability of each ER valve is experimentally realized.

Abstract For the four rotational levels JK₋K₊ = 101, 110,212 and 221 of ethylene oxide all possible four level double resonance experiments for dipole allowed transitions have been performed to investigate collisional effects and to determine the relative change of signal intensity, η = ⊿I/I, due to high power pump radiation. The T1 and T2-relaxation times have been measured for all dipole allowed transitions within these four levels. A combination of the data obtained from both experimental methods allows the determination of rate and bath constants taking into account only first order dipolar transitions. No further restrictions have been used. This approximation is supported by a triple resonance experiment. In addition to the pure gas investigation in the absence of external fields, rotational relaxation has been studied in the presence of a static electric field and in a mixture with hydrogen.

Phase compositions of B-Fe-Mn-V alloys were studied by several experimental methods (DTA measurement, X-ray diffractions, and scanning electron microscopy). Besides the experimental study of the quaternary system, thermodynamic modelling of the ternary B-Mn-V system by the Calphad method and thermodynamic calculations for the quaternary B-Fe-Mn-V system were performed. Calculations for the quaternary system are based on the ternary subsystems (B-Mn-V, B-Fe-V, B-Fe-Mn, and Fe-Mn-V). Boron is modelled as an interstitial element in all solid solutions of vanadium, manganese, and iron. Very good agreement between experimental results and thermodynamic calculations was achieved. The created thermodynamic database is suitable for thermodynamic calculations of phase diagrams for all the ternary subsystems and also for the B-Fe-Mn-V quaternary system.
