This study examines the historical development of corporate governance structures in First Nations communities in British Columbia, where development corporations are employed to assist privately-owned and community-owned entrepreneurial enterprises. First Nations entrepreneurial activity functions in an environment where business must market to a global economy while preserving traditional values, beliefs and other cultural elements. A brief history of First Nations and their enterprise development efforts is presented. Empirical research findings describe the close relationship between local community and corporate goals and identify conflicts of interest between political leaders and management of development corporations. The evidence demonstrates entrepreneurial success and economic development of First Nations communities rely on an independent decision-making process within business development corporations. An alternative business model is developed utilizing the empirical research, social enterprise literature and the unique regional cooperative model of the Mondragon region of Spain. The new model respects the land base and other environmental and social values while providing a framework for economic success. Exploration of this unique enterprise-to-region development model, which incorporates consideration for the natural environment and social and cultural values, offers lessons to other societies and regions that will assist in the movement toward an economic system based on concepts of sustainability.

Human understanding of nature and forms of human behavior due to its closeness to cultural elements, shape the local wisdom of the community. Cultural values, attitudes, and behaviors that are culturally oriented in the life structure of local communities shape the cultural intelligence of a community, which is formed in the existing traditional rituals. Customary rituals have different meanings and procedures in each region, specifically in Pangkalan Buton Village, Sukadana Subdistrict, the surrounding community interprets it as a tribute to their ancestors or ancestors as a form of gratitude. Based on observations made by researchers, there are several traditional rituals such as the tradition of Nyambut Tamu, Tepung Tawa, Betangas, and Mandi Safar. The problem is the tradition is rarely seen because of the rapid progress of the times, making the behavior or knowledge of an object that is Malay culture increasingly fade, especially among teenagers. The purpose of this study was to identify the local wisdom of Malay culture through several traditional rituals in the village of Pangkalan Buton. This research method is a qualitative study, using the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) method as a data processing tool that has been collected previously in the traditional rituals of Nyambut Tamu in the village of Buton base. The stages of the research began from the identification of problems, permits, observational studies in the form of data collection and interviews to the process of analysis-synthesis associated with the Malay cultural traditions. The results of the study were in the form of descriptions of various forms of local community cultural traditions, especially in the residents of Pangkalan Buton village, Sukadana District, Kayong Utara Regency. The study concludes that each region in the archipelago has a unique tradition that is different and needs to be preserved, with the results of this identification will bring up a 'sense of belonging' for local residents.

Entrepreneurship plays an important role in the modern global economy; the share of products of small and medium enterprises in the gross product and exports not only of the developed but also of developing countries is growing. Innovation processes cover all sectors of the economy, and more and more people are involved in entrepreneurial activity, which contributes to the penetration of entrepreneurial thinking and business values in all areas of the socioeconomic life of society. The Institute of Entrepreneurship plays an increasingly prominent role in the institutional environment of socio-economic systems. This actualizes the problem of studying the relationship of the institution of entrepreneurship with the institutions of law, culture, management. This requires a methodology that allows you to explore the impact on the institute of entrepreneurship not only economic, but also non-economic factors. The methodology of the “old” institutionalism possesses such a tool, it is structural modeling (pattern modeling), which allows to explore the diversity of interrelationships of the institution of entrepreneurship with other components of the institutional and economic environment. The article explored the features of the development of the institution of entrepreneurship in Russia, established the relationship between the institution of entrepreneurship, values, motives and incentives for entrepreneurial activity, built a structural model of the institution of entrepreneurship based on the methodology of the old institutionalism (pattern modeling). The structural model of the institution of entrepreneurship reveals the relationship between the institution of entrepreneurship, the values of entrepreneurial activity, its motives and incentives; as well as the relationship between the institution of entrepreneurship with the institutions of governance, cultural and religious institutions, legal institutions and society.

Many Indigenous communities across Canada suffer from the lack of access to clean drinking water; ensuring individuals and communities have safe water to drink either from their home or from their local environment requires the consideration of multiple factors including individual risk perception. In collaboration with local leaders, semi-structured interviews (n = 99) were conducted over a two-year period in the Dene Tha’ First Nation and Kátł’odeeche First Nation to unpack the issue of risk perception and its meaning to local community members. These local metrics of risk perception including smell, taste, safety, health fears and level of concern were then used to explore patterns in other data on drinking water consumption patterns and bottled water use. The results are consistent with previous research related to water insecurity and indicate that both communities consume more bottled water than the average Canadian. Results also varied by jurisdiction; those in Alberta indicated much higher levels of concern and a greater degree of bottled water consumption.

The article studies theoretical foundations for the essence of entrepreneurship and entrepreneur; specifics in defining the concept of “entrepreneur” by representatives of economic schools; four stages of formation of the theories of entrepreneurship, where the characteristic features of the entrepreneur that changed under the influence of socio-economic development (external environment) are analyzed. Based on the economic characteristics of changes in the development of macro and micro levels, the emergence of new types of entrepreneurial activity – startups – is justified; a startup is defined as a fast-growing entity of small innovative entrepreneurship with a short-term history of operations, which operates in conditions of uncertainty and aims to create a fundamentally new product to meet the specific needs of consumers. The logic of forming of the concept of entrepreneur-startupper in the structural scheme is substantiated; the characteristic of a startuper as a peculiar combination of transformed traits of an entrepreneur in accordance to the stages of development of the theory of entrepreneurship is given; the characteristic features of the startupper are revealed; the peculiarities of the functioning of startups in Ukraine are analyzed. The characteristic of the special features of the startup entrepreneur is offered; further study of theories of entrepreneurship in accordance to the trends of the global economy under uncertainty, as well as the study of the features of development and functioning of new business entities – startups as a solution for unmet consumer needs and how to use modern technologies to create a new product, are justified.

Local wisdom that exist nowadays is facing challenge that threaten its preservation, so that it begins to eroded by the development of technology, which has adoption process of innovation and the diffusion of technology adoption. Understanding the local wisdom would be clear that local wisdom becomes important in managing natural resources and conserving environment. The purpose of this research is to revitalize and preserve the local wisdom of the indigenous community at Kampung Kuta, Ciamis Regency, West Java. The benefits of this research will be used for revitalization and preservation of local wisdom and revitalize the values and cultural norms contained in regulating the life of community.The research method and planning that would be applied in this revitalization and  preservation of cultural  is Participatory Planning and Research (PPR) which emphasize on excavate information through thorough inquiry toward local community. Humans as caliphs in the world must preserve the environment because human survival is very dependent on the environment. In encouraging the preservation of the environment, the community must live up to the values of wisdom that support the maintenance and preservation of the environment. However, in the digital age, this has led to a shift in cultural values of local wisdom. These values are increasingly fading because media exposure is increasingly dominating all human life. As experienced by the community in Cimanggu Village, Ngamprah District, West Bandung. They recognize that there are changes and shifts in cultural values. The focus of this research is to look at the cultural values  of local wisdom that exist in the village and how the meaning of the shift in cultural values  of local wisdom by the media for the local community. This research is qualitative research with a phenomenological study approach. Data collection techniques using observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies. The results of the study revealed that the cultural values  of local wisdom in the Cimanggu village were (1) Ngahiras, (2) Nyalin, (3) Tarawangsa, (4) Palak Science, (5) Palakiah, and (6) Kotok Jewer. The meaning of shifting the cultural values of local wisdom by the media for the local community includes: (1) Village communities perceive technological media as making rural communities more consumptive, (2) creating a shift in the professional direction of rice farmers into vegetable growers, and (3) Media exposure has a positive side as well as the negative side.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate how cultural values influence the entrepreneurial process. It conceptualises the relationship between post-materialistic values and entrepreneurial intention to explain low entrepreneurial activity.Design/methodology/approachThe study was conducted in Saudi Arabia with non-entrepreneurs. An online survey returned 405 valid questionnaires, representing a 27 per cent response rate. The data were analysed using partial least structural equation modelling.FindingsThe paper identifies key factors that explain the influence of changing cultural values on entrepreneurial activity. The results show that post-materialistic values influence entrepreneurial intention by decreasing desirability and entrepreneurial self-efficacy.Research limitations/implicationsThe study conceptualises the interplay between cultural values and entrepreneurial intention in Saudi Arabia. Further insights can be developed by comparing Saudi Arabia with other countries. The study was conducted as a “snapshot” of the current situation of entrepreneurship in Saudi Arabia with a cross-sectional survey design.Practical implicationsThe paper holds important implications for entrepreneurship educators when addressing unsupportive cultures for entrepreneurial activity. Cultural and motivational approaches are suggested. While the former focuses on aspects that encourage the desire and confidence to start a business, the latter involves encouraging setting venture creation as a goal.Originality/valuePrevious studies indicated that post-materialistic values negatively influence entrepreneurship; this paper contributes further by exploring how this relationship manifests by exploring the intervening factors between post-materialistic values and entrepreneurial intention. It advances entrepreneurship research by investigating deep assumptions underlying the formulation of entrepreneurial intentions. It also responds to the need to understand the difference in the levels of entrepreneurial activity across countries.

This empirical study consists of two parts. The first part of the study examines the cultural characteristics and dimensions of entrepreneurs and factory workers in transition economies during the early transition period to determine if their cultural values were similar to those found in other nations. The second part of the study compares the differences in Hofstede’s cultural dimension scores between entrepreneurs and workers in market economies. It might seem extraordinary that after more than 70 years of a centralized nonentrepreneurial society that all of the communist nations that the current authors studied had essentially the same cultural differences among entrepreneurs that were found in capitalist nations with a long history of entrepreneurial activity.

This study explores the extent and impediments of knowledge sharing in Chinese firms because they are becoming dominant entities in the global economy, yet limited research exists on this important aspect of their operations. Survey data are obtained from experienced managers of 164 Chinese firms from a wide range of industries, sizes, and ownership types. The responses indicate that knowledge sharing is not open and complete in Chinese firms. Similar to findings from developed economies in the West, a large number of factors impede knowledge sharing in Chinese firms. These range from Chinese cultural values—which had been identified as being important by prior China-based studies—to attributes of the firm (e.g., incentive system, communication channels, organizational culture), as well as those of knowledge holders and potential recipients (e.g., judgment ability, organizational commitment). Implications of these findings for practice and research are discussed.
