The evolution process of the surrounding rock failure mechanism is studied because of spalling and roof fall accidents at the top corner of longwall top coal caving faces affected by mining and the difficulty of moving the advanced end support. Methods are proposed to improve the stability of surrounding rocks at the top corner of the end including cutting at the top corner of the end, reinforcing the anchor cable, changing the stress distribution of surrounding rocks at the top corner of the end, and transferring the stress concentration area of surrounding rocks to the deeper rock. Field observations of the surrounding rocks at the top corner of the 15107 fully mechanized caving face show that the stress value of the surrounding rocks at the corner between the roof of the return airway and the coal wall of the working face is 28.9 MPa when the surrounding rocks are in a stable state without mining. The stress value of surrounding rocks at the top corner of the end is 32.3 MPa when it is affected by mining, which results in spalling and roof fall. The surrounding rocks are in a stable state when the maximum stress of the surrounding rocks at the top corner of the reinforced anchor cable’s back-end is 26.1 MPa. The results show that cutting of the surrounding rocks at the top corner of the end and the reinforcement of the anchor cable can avoid the spalling and roof fall when the top corner of the end is affected by mining and can ensure that the end support advances and working face moves forward.

Based on the special geological conditions of a tunnel in Qingyuan section of Huizhou-Zhanzhou Expressway, FLAC3d numerical simulation software is used to simulate the rheological properties and instability of surrounding rock in large-section fully weathered sandstone section, and the stability and loss of surrounding rock are analyzed. The deformation of the dome and the face at steady state is analyzed. It is found that: 1) when the surrounding rock is in a stable state, the deformation curve of the dome is smooth. When the surrounding rock of the face is unstable, the front of the face appears ahead. Deformation should be first strengthened on the surrounding rock in front of the face. 2) The arched foot is an important part of the instability of the surrounding rock. In order to prevent the expansion of the collapsed part, the arched part should be reinforced. 3) In order to obtain the limit state of surrounding rock stability, the strength of surrounding rock is reduced, and the strength reduction coefficient corresponding to the displacement sudden point is taken as the safety factor of rock stability around the hole, and the stability safety coefficients of surrounding rock of each construction step are greater than 1.2. 4) The dynamic standard values of deformation control in the whole construction stage are obtained by analyzing the deformation curves of each data monitoring point with time in the corresponding time period of each construction step.

The movement of the overlying strata in steeply dipping coal seams is complex, and the deformation of roof rock beam is obvious. In general, the backfill mining method can improve the stability of the surrounding rock effectively. In this study, the 645 working face of the tested mine is used as a prototype to establish the mechanical model of the inclined roof beam using the sloping flexible shield support backfilling method in a steeply dipping coal seam, and the deflection equation is derived to obtain the roof damage structure and the maximum deflection position of the roof beam. Finally, numerical simulation and physical similarity simulation experiments are carried out to study the stability of the surrounding rock structure under backfilling mining in steeply dipping coal seams. The results show the following: (1) With the support of the gangue filling body, the inclined roof beam has smaller roof subsidence, and the maximum deflection position moves to the upper part of working face. (2) With the increase of the stope height, the stress and displacement field of the surrounding rock using the backfilling method show an asymmetrical distribution, the movement, deformation, and failure increase slowly, and the increase of the strain is relatively stable. Compared with the caving method, the range and degree of the surrounding rock disturbed by the mining stress are lower. The results of numerical simulation and physical similarity simulation experiment are generally consistent with the theoretically derived results. Overall, this study can provide theoretical basis for the safe and efficient production of steeply dipping coal seams.

In view of the influence of mining stress on the stability of the surrounding rock of inclined roof mining roadways in deep mines, the surrounding rock stability index is defined and solved based on the rock strength criterion and the stress distribution. The mining roadway of the 17102(3) working face of the Pansan Coal Mine is used as the engineering background and example. The surrounding rock’ stabilities under the conditions of no support and bolt support are analyzed according to the surrounding rock’s stability index and the deformation data. The results show that the areas of low wall and high wall instability are 1.68 m2 and 2.12 m2, respectively, and the low wall is more stable than the high wall; the areas of the roof and floor instability are 0.33 m2 and 0.35 m2, respectively, and the roof and floor are more stable than the two sides. During mining, the area of instability greatly increases at first, then decreases to 0, and reaches a maximum value at the peak of the abutment pressure. The stability of the surrounding rock decreases first and then increases. Compared with the end anchoring bolt support, the full-length anchoring bolt support reduces the area of instability to a greater extent, and the full-length anchoring bolt support effect is better. The surrounding rock in the end anchoring zone and the full-length anchoring zone began to deform significantly at 200 m and 150 m from the working face, respectively. This indicates that the control effect of the full-length anchoring bolt support is better and verifies the rationality of the surrounding rock stability index to describe the instability characteristics. This research method can provide a theoretical reference for analysis of the stability characteristics and support design of different cross-section roadways.

To solve the problems of the rapid advance of the working face was delayed by complicated working procedure and high labor intensity, and the severe damage of roof bolt (anchor cable) induced by advanced hydraulic support, the deformation characteristics of surrounding rock, and the supporting principle of grouting truss anchor cable were analyzed theoretically by taking the roadway of 3_(down) coal seams 2326# working face in Sanhekou coal mine as the research object; then, the mechanical model of supporting structure of roadway under goaf was established. Based on this model, the optimal supporting scheme was determined, and the active advanced support technology scheme of “advanced grouting truss anchor cable” was proposed to take the place of the existing single pillar. The deformation and failure characteristics of surrounding rock of the working face leading roadway were observed and analyzed on-site. Within the allowable range of reading error, the results showed that the maximum displacement of medium-deep base point and shallow base point of two roadways was 15.2 cm and 10.9 cm, respectively; the pressure value had a more obvious jump increase when the distance between each measuring point and the working face was about 35 m, which means the range is strongly affected by the advance mining, and the area affected by advanced mining was 35 m ahead of the working face. It was observed that the lowest position of roof separation development ranged from 0.71 m to 2.73 m. The separation layer was generally distributed in the range of 0.73 m-2.49 m, and the fracture area was roughly distributed in the range of 0.01 m-0.62 m. Under the condition of overlying goaf, there was a complete stress structure, which can meet the requirements of suspension support.

There are series of problems faced by most of the coal mines in China, ranging from low-coal recovery rate and strained replacement of working faces to gas accumulation in the upper corner of coalfaces. Based on the gob-side entry retaining at the No. 18205 working face in a coal mine in Shanxi Province, theoretical analysis, numerical simulation, and engineering practice were comprehensively used to study the mechanical characteristics of the influence of the width of the filling body beside the roadway and the stability of surrounding rock in a high-gas-risk mine. The rational width of the filling body beside the roadway was determined, and a concrete roadway-side support with a headed reinforcement-integrated strengthening technique was proposed, which have been applied in engineering practice. The stability of the filling body beside the roadway is mainly influenced by the movement of the overlying rock strata, and the stability of the surrounding rock can be improved effectively by rationally determining the width of the filling body beside the roadway. When the width of the roadway-side filling body is 2.5 m, the surrounding rock convergence of the gob-side entry retaining is relatively small at only 5% of the convergence ratio. It has been shown that the figure for roof separation is relatively low, and strata behaviors are relatively alleviated and gas density do not exceed the limit, which are the best results of gob-side entry retaining. The results of this research can provide theoretical guidance for excavation of coal mines with similar geological conditions and have some referential significance to safety and efficient production in coal mines.

Aiming at the problem of large deformation and instability failure and its control of soft coal and soft roof roadway under intense mining, laboratory experiments, theoretical calculations, Flac3D numerical simulation, borehole peeping, and pressure observation were used to study the deflection characteristics of the deviatoric stress of the gas tailgate and the distribution and failure characteristics of the plastic zone in the mining face considering the strain softening characteristics of the roof and coal of roadway, and then the truss anchor cable-control technology is proposed. The results show the following: (1) The intense mining influence on the working face will deflect the peak deviatoric stress zone (PDSZ) of the surrounding rock of the gas tailgate. The influence distance of PDSZ is about 20 m in advance and 60 m in lag; the PDSZ at the gob side of the roadway is located in the range of 3–5.5 m from the surface of the coal pillar, while the coal wall side is mainly located in the range of 3–4.5 m at the shoulder corner and bottom corner of the solid coal. (2) The intense mining in the working face caused the nonuniform expansion of the surrounding rock plastic area of the gas tailgate. The two shoulder angles of the roadway and the bottom of the coal pillar have the largest damage range, and the maximum damage location is the side angle of the coal pillar (5 m). Angle and bottom angle of coal pillar are the key points of support control. (3) The plastic failure line of the surrounding rock of the gas tailgate is always between the inner and outer contours of the PDSZ, and the rock mass in the PDSZ is in a stable and unstable transition state, so the range of anchor cable support should be cross plastic failure line. (4) The theoretical calculations and numerical simulation results agree well with the drilling peep results. Based on the deflection law of the PDSZ and the expansion characteristics of the plastic zone, a truss anchor cable supporting system with integrated locking and large-scale support function is proposed to jointly control the roof and the two sides, which effectively solves the problem of weak surrounding rock roadway under severe mining deformation control problems realizing safety and efficient production in coal mines under intense mining.

Since deformations of tunnel nearly mined area are larger, the reasonable support is very important. According to a side working face tunnel nearly mined area in one Mine, FLAC 2D was applied to numerical analyze on two type bolt net supported tunnel of “short bolt and long anchor cable” and “full anchor cable”. The results showed as follows: (1) plastic region of surrounding rock relatively large, which supported by short bolt and long anchor cable. Displacement reaches 27cm, the effect of this type supporting not significant; (2) The supporting of full anchor cable can effectively control deformation of tunnel, displacement less than 5cm, plastic region of surrounding rock also less than 2.3m. So, the supporting of full anchor cable can meet operating requirements.

Abstract The gob-side entry driving is driving in low pressure area, which bears less support pressure and is easy to maintain, so it is widely used. Taking the gob-side entry driving in thick coal seam of Dongtan Coal Mine as an example, the reasonable size of pillar and the section of roadway are numerically simulated by combining numerical with measurement, and the roadway support is designed. According to the distribution of lateral stress in working face, eight pillars of different sizes are designed. By simulating and comparing the stress distribution of surrounding rock and the development range and shape of plastic zone in different positions, the pillar size of gob-side entry driving is optimized to be 4.5m. According to the results of optimization of roadway section, the section of straight wall semi-circular arch roadway is adopted. According to the analysis, the roadway is supported by bolt + steel mesh + anchor cable. By observing the stability of roadway, it provides experience for the stability study of roadway the gob-side entry driving with small pillar in thick seam.

Non-coal pillar mining with roadway formed automatically (RFANM) is a new mining approach, which demonstrates revolutionary significance because it does not require making roadway before mining and coal pillar retaining. In order to explore the stability of the surrounding rock structure in RFANM, the deformation of the surrounding rock was theoretically analyzed and simulated based on three different fracture positions of the main roof. It was concluded that reasonable control of temporary support strength in roadway is of great importance to control the deformation of the entry. The deformation process of surrounding rock under different fracture positions in RFANM was simulated by using the Universal Discrete Element Code (UDEC). The results of the numerical simulation showed that the main roof was fractured at the solid coal side or gob side; the deformation of the roadway was small. The fracture condition of the main roof at the gob side required a higher effect of roof slitting or temporary support from the roadway. Through drilling and peeping at the retained roadway, it was judged that the main roof was broken inside the coal wall. Field monitoring results revealed that the deformation of the roadway can be effectively controlled.

Roof regeneration in coal mining occurs when the remaining bottom slice of thick coal is re-mined. In view of the challenges of roof fall and instability support of a regenerative roof in the mining of steeply dipping coal seams, combined with the geological and engineering conditions of the working face in the Panbei Coal Mine, the mechanism of the instability of the regenerative roof and support is studied, and control countermeasures are proposed. Based on the comprehensive combination of the measurement of the roof structure, physical simulation, numerical simulation, and theoretical analysis, the cementation and compaction degree of the regenerated roof were described. The caving and sliding law of the regenerated roof after bottom slice mining was explored, and the model of support dumping and sliding instability under the roof fall state was established. The results obtained yielded three main findings. Firstly, the compaction degree of the regenerative roof is higher than that of the middle part of the working face, and the compaction degree of the upper part of the working face is the smallest. Secondly, the overburden structure instability of the bottom slice underwent six stages. The fracture of the cantilever beam and the slippage of gangue are the reasons for the enhancement of the acoustic signal at each stage. Finally, the upper part of the stope was identified as the crucial zone in the prevention and control of the support instability. A moving method of metal mesh with pressure and roof scraping was developed, and the support anti-overturning and anti-skid jack was set up to effectively control the stability of the support and roof fall, for safe and efficient mining of a steeply dipping coal seam under a regenerative roof.
