This chapter suggests that the nature of work in Britain changed dramatically during the last thirty years of the twentieth century. Sectoral shifts included a move from manufacturing towards services. There were also major shifts from the public sector to the private sector: between 1980 and 1998 the proportion of employees accounted for by private sector services rose from 26% to 44%. Part-time and temporary workers also became more common. These changes are often claimed to be associated with some more general transformations in the nature of work in Britain. One view holds that there have been improving levels of skills and training and better communication in the workplace. Another view holds that there have been increased levels of effort and stress. This chapter attempts to explain why rising skill levels, employee autonomy and commitment have been accompanied by widespread reports of increases in stress, lengthening working hours and a sense of a lack of control over one's working life.

The article analyses how contemporary processes of media production involving temporary work contracts for journalists, long working hours, the demand for unconditional commitment to work and so on push women into unequal position compared to male employees. Attention is paid to ‘engendered’ work in ‘greedy’ media organizations characterized by precarization of work and the related devaluation of journalism as a profession. Rather than detecting the extent of power and position of women in the media, we adopt the materialist analysis of mechanisms that mask gender inequality and contribute to ‘capitalizing’ on gender for the imperative of media productivity. The study was conducted in Slovenia, in Eastern European, post-socialist context, and comprised 33 individual interviews with media managers and workers at three television stations (public TV SLO, and commercial POP TV and Planet TV). In the analysis, we focus on how journalists, by internalizing the disciplining norms of ‘entrepreneurial subjectivity’, become the motivating force behind precarization of work. Although these processes are often perceived as gender neutral even among female journalists, we argue that they are masculinized and have different effects on men and women, among other things due to the individualization of women’s reproductive roles.

Regulation becomes a logical consequence of the game of cultural symbols displayed by convergent media. Terutama bagi kalangan pengguna atau publik, pihak ini biasanya menjadi pihak yang paling sering menjadi korban dari implementasi konvergensi.

Prevalence and effects of co-determination in the Netherlands Based on data of the Netherlands Employers Work Survey of TNO (with about 20,000 firms in the period 2008-2014) and the Netherlands Working Conditions Survey of TNO and Statistics Netherlands (with about 150,000 employees in the period 2007-2014) this articles provides answers on questions like to what extent formal co-determination exists in the Netherlands, and what the relation is with the quality of work, the terms of employment and the firm performance. The analyses show that about 76 percent of the medium sized firms (50-249 employees) in the period 2008-2014 have a works council or a workers representation. Among the larger firms (250 employees or more) this figure is 94 percent. Hence, a quarter of the medium sized firms and 6 percent of the larger firms do not comply with the law. In the period 2008-2014 there is no increase or decrease in formal co-determination in the Netherlands. Co-determination is two to three times more often found in older than in younger firms. Probably tradition plays a role in older firms and unfamiliarity and other worries in younger businesses. Sectors were co-determination is often found are the public sector (95%), education (80%), and health care (70%). On the other hand, in hotels and restaurants (18%), agriculture (19%), construction (31%), and trade (33%) works councils and worker representations are less often found. Employees in the Netherlands are relatively satisfied with their works council or workers representation, scoring 6,5 on a scale from 1 to 10. No relations were found between the prevalence of a works council and the increase of decrease of the firm performance or the satisfaction with the terms of employment, both in the view of the employer. However, employees working in a firm with a works council or worker representation are more satisfied with their work, their income and pension, their working hours and working conditions. In addition, employees in firms with a works council or worker representation, also report more direct participation (more job consultation, more job control, with more supervisor support and less conflict).

This study refers to the unexplored scientific field of administration in preschool education and comes to investigate the views of teachers working at the public kindergartens of Piraeus region, regarding their educational administration needs and the form of relevant training programs they wish to attend. In Greece, one kindergarten teacher of each school unit is required to perform both administrative and teaching tasks simultaneously, as there is not a separate principal who performs only administrative tasks. This survey was conducted from April to May 2019, whereas the quantitative approach was chosen for the collection of data. The questionnaires were delivered through the e-mail addresses of the kindergarten schools of the Piraeus region. The population of the survey was 150 kindergarten teachers, whereas the sample was 71 kindergarten teachers (response rate 47.3 %). The results of the survey show that the vast majority of teachers regard management training as being a crucial factor of effectiveness, while in terms of training programs they state that they desire a combination of introductory and periodic training organized by institutions such as the Institute of Educational Policy, Universities, the Ministry of Education and the Regional Centers for Educational Planning. In addition, they prefer to attend compulsory and fast-paced training programs whenever there is a change in administrative duties and whenever an educational reform occurs, organized by experienced school unit principals and the Professors of the National Centre for Public Administration and Local Government during working hours with exemption from teaching duties. The results of the present study provide guidance for the development of an educational program for kindergarten teachers in administrative issues.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced unprecedented changes upon journalists in the United States as they attempted to cover the story while adhering to the same stay-at-home orders as the rest of the public. This study used organizational support theory to investigate the stress associated with the logistics of coverage early in the pandemic and how perceived organizational support played a role in either alleviating or adding to that stress. In total, 222 journalists responded to a survey sent out during the first few weeks of the stay-at-home orders issued across the United States. Results revealed varying degrees of logistical support provided by news organizations with nearly one quarter receiving no supplies, technology, or extra training at all. Greater perceived organizational support was associated with lower levels of stress and higher levels of work commitment. Female journalists and those who were younger and less experienced felt significantly more stress associated with pandemic coverage.
