The Educational Orientations of Lecturers and Their Students: A Case Study of an Australian University

The educational orientations of 1,331 internal and external students and 154 staff at the University of New England were investigated using two recently developed U.S. measuring instruments. Significant differences between the views of staff and students were found in the areas of assessment, the role of students in decision-making, and (in the case of the internals) the vocational relevance of courses and the importance of learning for its own sake. The views of the teaching staff more closely corresponded to those of the external rather than internal students. The importance of these findings is discussed in the context of the desirability for our tertiary institutions to adapt to the possibly changing needs of their student bodies.

Some academics are pushing for teaching staff to implement didactical practices to obtain sustainable behavior. Moreover, a fundamental element of gamification in all educational stages is the noteworthy effect it has on student motivation. In our study, we examined higher education students’ assessments in the University of Malaga on the design of educational gamification and the teaching criteria that relate to gamification, and its effect on student’s motivation, the applications of gamification, and the attitude towards sustainability. A questionnaire was administered to students studying for degrees in education from the University of Malaga. A total of 187 valid surveys were obtained. Partial least squares structural equation modeling was computed for these data based on an exploratory–confirmatory model and using SmartPLS version 3.3.2. A positive relationship between assessment of students’ motivation and sustainability attitude was found. We found that the opinions of the students about the role of their training and teaching design material in education would affect students’ motivation and the sustainability behavior, although the power of this last construct is moderate.

Fungsi universiti dalam mengkomersilisasikan patent telah banyak dikaji oleh penulis. Setengah universiti telah berjaya mengkomersilisasikan paten mereka terutamanya dengan melesenkan kepada syarikat gergasi atau pun dengan menubuhkan kompeni spin–off. Walau bagaimanapun masih terdapat sebahagian paten universiti yang tidak dieksploitasikan. Kajian ini membincangkan apakah karekteristik paten yang tidak dikomersilisasikan. Sebuah universiti di Scotland telah digunakan sebagai kajian kes. Sepuluh jenis patent yang tidak diekploitasikan oleh universiti berkenaan telah dipilih untuk kajian. Penyelidik daripada paten tersebut telah ditemuduga dengan mendalam menggunakan soalan semi berstruktur. Temuduga telah direkod, ditranskrib, dan data telah dianalisis berdasarkan kepada setiap kes dan silang kes berbantukan Nvivo software. Dapatan menunjukkan sebab yang paling penting kenapa paten tidak dieksploitasikan adalah berkait rapat dengan teknologi itu sendiri. Teknologi didapati berada pada tahap pembangunan yang terlalu awal. Ini menyebabkan syarikat yang telah kukuh lebih berhati–hati untuk membangun dan memasarkan teknologi tersebut. Walau bagaimanapun terdapat teknologi yang mempunyai potensi untuk dieksploitasikan jika peruntukan disediakan untuk penyelidikan lanjut. Dalam kes yang lain pula setengah teknologi telah dipintas oleh teknologi yang lebih ke hadapan dan teknologi tersebut telah mendahului pasaran. Kurangnya motivasi di kalangan penyelidik–penyelidik untuk melihat inovasi mereka ke pasaran, kurangnya jaringan dan pemasaran produk oleh penyelidik dan pihak TTO, adalah juga menyebabkan ia tidak diekploitasikan. Mengkaji kenapa universiti paten tidak dieksploitasikan akan meningkatkan pemahaman tentang proses pengkomersilan bagi paten di universiti. Hasil kajian dapat membantu dalam proses membuat keputusan untuk mengkomersilisasikan hasil penyelidikan universiti. Pemahamam mengenai karekteristik atau ciri universiti paten yang mempunyai potensi nilai ekonomi yang tinggi hanya patut dipatenkan, dan ini akan mengurangi bilangan paten yang tidak dieksploitasikan. Kata kunci: Paten yang tidak diekploitasikan, pengkomersilisasi; universiti paten The role of universities in commercialising their patents has been studied extensively. Some universities have succeeded in commercialising their patents especially through the route of licensing to established companies or forming new spin–off companies. However, there are some university patents remained unexploited, which represent wastage to the universities. This paper discusses what are the features of some patented technologies that are not commercialised. A case study of a university in Scotland was used in this study. Ten patents which are not being exploited by the University were selected. The inventors of these technologies were interviewed in depth, using semistructured questionnaires. The interviews were recorded, transcribed and the data was analysed based on a case and cross case aided by Nvivo software. The findings show that the most significant reason why patents are not exploited is associated with the technologies themselves. The technologies were found to be at very early stage of development, thus established companies were wary of taking them to market. Lack of motivation among the inventors to see their inventions being exploited, lack of industry networking and marketing of the TTO and inventor are another important reason that led to the inventions unexploited. Studying why some university patents were not exploited will enhance the understanding of the process of commercialisation of university patents, which would help refine the decision making process of patenting. Understanding the characteristics of the university inventions that have high economic potential thus should seek patent protections would reduce the number of unexploited patents. AbstractOrganisations are important gatekeepers in the labour market inclusion of immigrants and their children. Research has regularly documented ethnic discrimination in hiring decisions. Aiming to further our understanding of the role of organisations in influencing the professional trajectories of individuals of immigrant origin, this paper investigates the recruitment practices of public administrations. Drawing on approaches from organisational sociology and a qualitative case study of public administrations in the German state of Berlin, the article identifies three crucial elements of organisational decision-making affecting the recruitment of staff of immigrant origin: decisions regarding advertisement strategies, formal criteria, and individual candidates. Further, the article shows the underlying decision-making rationalities and the role of organisational contexts and ethnic stereotypes for recruitment-related decisions.

The educational journey in postgraduate programs is linked to the actors, processes and results, setting the tone for different approaches from the perspective of characterization, development and evaluation. It is summarized in a sequential manner in four stages: entry to the program, progress within the program, and the final educational stretch, where the instructor/tutor plays an important part and obtaining the diploma or degree. The goal of this research was to evaluate, using the students’ perceptions, formative experiences as a result of their academic journey in postgraduate programs within education in Northern Mexico. We have used a case study based on the focus groups technique, applied to a sample of cases comprised of students enrolled in their final educational stage. The information was analyzed using inductive data analysis. The main results were grouped into three meta categories: (1) development of professional skills for the successful design of the intervention proposal, which unfolded into four categories; (2) the role of the tutor during the formative process, consisting of four analysis categories and (3) contributions of the teaching staff in their profession, consisting of two categories. These trends also evidence the formative abundance in the personal, academic and social training context of the students.

As a sales and marketing consultant, you will examine existing data on spectator attendance trends and focus group interviews to determine the current issues facing the athletic department. Then, you will be asked to suggest the manners by which the athletic department should innovate the ticket service, using a design thinking approach to grow ticket sales and spectator attendance for the men’s hockey program.

Purpose This paper aims to explore the role of university in promoting, generating and sustaining social innovation (SI). It aimed to understand how higher education institutions have extended their contribution beyond the traditional function of teaching and research to perform in socio-economic problem-solving. It looks at the kinds of contributions which universities potentially make to SI processes, and the effects that this has on the direction and magnitude of SI, and by implication social development. This was done by drawing lessons from a SI project that the University of the Western Cape has been involved in, i.e. Zenzeleni Networks Project. Design/methodology/approach To address the research question with this framework, the author adopted an exploratory research design using a case study. This research is qualitative, exploratory and descriptive, based on a case study built with secondary data. Findings This paper submits that universities can potentially function as key role players in promoting SI initiatives and fostering social transformations. Universities contribute with different kinds of resources and inputs to foster new SI ideas. Originality/value The paper suggests that socially innovative university projects may contribute to community social sustainability maintaining social cohesion by increasing social capital and providing resources for the empowerment of the marginalised communities. In so doing, they contribute to overcome social exclusion and promote more sustainable forms of development at community level. More research is needed on how universities can build community networks with local community partners, who can use the insights of academic research to replicate interventions and move to scale.

As HIV/AIDS continues to spread and affect the lives of millions of people, a sense of urgency has developed about the imperative need to stop the epidemic. Education is the key to change knowledge, attitudes and behaviour. There is currently a gap in educationprogrammes targeting youths of ages 18-24 years, for example, those enrolled in tertiary institutions. The aim of the study was therefore to establish the level of HIV/AIDS awareness among undergraduate pharmacy students at the University of Limpopo (Medunsa Campus)/ Tshwane University of Technology Schools of Pharmacy. A structured questionnaire was administered to pharmacy students on entry to the programme. Although the students of 2003, 2004 and 2005 obtained mean percentage HIV/AIDS awareness scores in the range of 70%-80%, they had inadequate knowledge of some transmission routes, events that occur when HIV invades the body, the “window period” and some symptoms. These knowledge gaps should be addressed by universities by integrating HIV/AIDS policies and education fully into all aspects of their planning, operations andteaching.

The relevance of the problems of cooperative construction in the formation of Belarusian scientific schools is determined. The role of the Belarusian State University in the development of problems of cooperation in the 1920s is characterised. The activity of S. L. Pevsner as a representative of the economic thought of the 1920s is studied. In the perspective of «history through personality», the problems of the formation of the personnel potential of Belarusian State University are revealed. The relations between the management and the teaching staff of the university, the status and issues of material well-being of teachers invited to Belarusian State University are characterised. The conclusion is made about a significant personnel shortage and the presence of serious competition in the personnel sphere of university science in the 1920s with the development of higher education in the USSR.
