This article looks at three recent French novels in order to explore key themes in what has become known as the roman d’entreprise: Pierre Mari’s Résolution (2005), Nathalie Kuperman’s Nous étions des êtres vivants (2010) and Thierry Beinstingel’s Retour aux mots sauvages (2010). The figure of the entreprise functions both as a fictional representation of the post-Fordist workplace environment in companies such as France Télécom, and also as a means of tackling wider issues of work and social organisation in an era of neoliberal managerialism. The concepts of capitalist realism, organisational miasma and virtuality are used to analyse the ways in which the three novels convey the distinctive affective landscape of the contemporary entreprise. Fiction is used to consider the prolix and self-referential nature of the managerialist entreprise, which enables it to exert a significant influence on the individual and collective subjectivities of employees. The three novels focus on the capacity of the entreprise to capture language and impose an affect of silence on employees.

In this study, droplet nucleation and jumping on the conical microstructure surface is simulated using the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM). The nucleation and jumping laws of the droplet on the surface are summarized. The numerical results suggest that the height and the gap of the conical microstructure exhibit a significant influence on the nucleation position of the droplet. When the ratio of height to the gap of the microstructure(H/D) is small, the droplet tends to nucleate at the bottom of the structure. Otherwise, the droplet tends to nucleate towards the side of the structure. The droplet grown in the side nucleation mode possesses better hydrophobicity than that of the droplet grown in the bottom nucleation mode and the droplet jumping becomes easier. Apart from the coalescence of the droplets jumping out of the surface, jumping of individual droplets may also occur under certain conditions. The ratio of the clearance to the width of the conical microstructure(D/F) depends on the jumping mode of the droplet. The simulation results indicate that when the D/F ratio is greater than 1.2, the coalescence jump of droplets is likely to occur. On the contrary, the individual jump of droplets is easy to occur.

*There is an extensive literature, over the course of 25 years, that identifies neoliberalism as a political-economic theory that utilises the efficiencies of market economics to develop and legitimate government priorities and practices. Neoliberalism also promotes forms of social organisation that emphasise individuals’ freedom of choice, and has emphasised ways to increase the educational choices of those who have been racialised as Black or African American. Neoliberalism calls for ‘freedom’, mostly understood in relation to the rights of the individual to market participation and of markets themselves to operate without interference from the state (...

Taking the stance that the study of nonhuman primates can be useful in understanding the mechanism of long-term changes in social organisation, this short paper seeks to shed light on the role the individual might play in changes in future human society. This is done by examining the causes of social order change in a group of free-ranging macaque monkeys. The paper suggests that it may be useful to examine the role of genetically transmitted characteristics in human “success” stories, particularly concerning adaptability in times of change, and that the examination of individual life-history data across generations, will be essential for clarifying the mechanism of changes in human social organisation.

Basically everyone has felt anxiety at a certain moment in his life. But if the anxiety experienced is very excessive and left alone without the direction of someone can be very detrimental to the individual. As for memorization, anxiety often arises experienced by students. The need for guidance to facilitate students in memorizing and can reduce the level of anxiety they experience. Therefore, the formation of the application of group-based guidance in order to reduce anxiety in memorizing students in boarding schools. From the results of the normality test results Sig. obtained a probability value> 0.05 then the results can be stated normally. From the test results Sig. Based on the Mean of Sig. 0.058> 0.05 variance of the data resulting from the application of group-based guidance in the experimental class and the control class is homogeneous. Based on the results of the group statistics above we can find out from the data generated by the experimental class as many as 10 people have an average value of 152.70 and in the control class as many as 10 people have an average value of 124.00 that has been obtained by each class. Independent samples test output table test results of students learning we can know the value of Sig. (2-tailed) is 0,000. Based on the criteria in decision making 0,000 <0.05, then Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. So that there is a significant influence in the application of group-based guidance in overcoming anxiety over memorization of the Sabrowi C class of Roudlotut Tholibin Islamic Boarding School.

En cambio, el bienestar y la educación mantienen una relación más significativa entre los encuestados.ABSTRACTCompetitiveness is a subject of study that affects different aspects of the individual and of the organizations. The demand that the modern environment towards the acquisition of skills, abilities and capacities impels diverse studies on the satisfaction that is obtained when trying to fulfill all the requirements in the process of development. In this research, we try to find a relation between competitiveness and the variables of happiness, welfare and education to validate the existence or significant influence among them. For these effects a correlation analysis and quantitative structural equations were used in a case study with a sample of 106 university graduates. The main findings indicate that happiness is a perception that can be presented as independent of competitiveness. In contrast, welfare and education have a more significant relationship among respondents.

Chapter four examines the suicide crisis at France Télécom, situating this in the shift to a new finance-driven management model, following the company’s privatisation, whereby the search for shareholder value became the overarching strategic goal of the company. I draw on scholarship on financialisation and in particular, the rise of shareholder value, examining its impact on the changing status and conditions of labour. Suicides were not an aberration in an otherwise smooth-functioning system, but the consequence of systemic processes that sought to remove labour from the workplace as an obstacle to extraneous financial goals. The chapter examines the structural transformations of the company which transformed the perceived value of the individual worker and considers the new expulsionary management tactics that characterised the Next restructuring plan. The chapter draws on testimonial material, including suicide letters and witness statements drawn from a legal case taken by a work inspector against the company in 2010 which culminated in the recent criminal trial against the company’s former bosses. An analysis of this testimonial material allows us to reconstruct the causal connections that link structural transformations in the company to the acute suffering that triggered an act of self-killing.

Purpose This paper aims to identify the employee characteristics which are most strongly associated with perceived requirements for different aspects of the workplace environment. Design/methodology/approach A questionnaire was completed by 364 employees from a large private-sector organisation. Respondents were surveyed on different work-related, personality and demographic characteristics. They then completed a series of items measuring perceived requirements for four aspects of the workplace environment (workspace segregation, workspace territoriality, individual environmental control and aesthetic quality). Associations between employee characteristics and perceived workplace requirements were explored using multiple regression analyses. Findings Numerous significant associations emerged. For example, the requirement for more segregated workspaces was associated with higher susceptibility to distraction, and the requirement for higher workspace territoriality was associated with less positive perceptions regarding the impact of flexible working on work effectiveness. Originality/value The individual difference factors which moderate satisfaction with the workplace environment have received relatively little attention in past research. The present study addresses this knowledge gap by including a wider range of employee characteristics and comprehensively investigating which of these most strongly predict differences in perceived requirements for the workplace.

What realities do questionnaires and surveys, designed to measure stress and suffering at work, bring to light? What realities do they conceal? In this research, we consider self-assessment scales and questionnaires as techniques of visibility that contribute to the construction of knowledge on the ‘suffering subject’ at work. We conducted a qualitative analysis of the questionnaire and survey report conducted by the consulting firm Technologia for France Telecom Orange, after a spate of suicides in 2008–2009. The results show that: (1) the questionnaire used to measure suffering at work views the subject as someone reflective yet rather passive, and their suffering as resulting from an unbalanced relationship with the work environment, (2) the report further restricts this understanding of suffering to the administrative position of the individual, (3) as a consequence, the political, strategic, ideological dimensions and the economic power struggles affecting work are silenced. Relying on Foucault’s approach to knowledge ( savoir), we interpret this narrow concept of the subject and their surroundings as resulting from an assemblage between scientific discourses and visibility techniques; a compromise that conceals debates on the strategic orientation of the firm.
