This article reports on the first stages of a longitudinal study examining the implementation of a reform effort in high schools known as Quality Management (QM). Quality Management is defined as the use of the following seven practices: continuous improvement, customer focus, systems thinking, leadership, studying and evaluating processes, data-based decision making, and training. Interview and survey data from a national sample of purposively chosen high schools show limited results in terms of the effective use and institutionalization of the seven Quality practices by classroom teachers, though the lessons learned and examples of best practices are instructive. Contextual factors that aid or inhibit the implementation QM practices are identified and explicated. The findings provide insight into the implementation of systemic school reform efforts, with particular emphasis on the critical leadership role of principals.

Also shared are lessons learned from managing emotion in the workplace including being true to one's self, understanding your purpose, adopting a “put me in coach” attitude, learning to talk to people, finding an affinity group, minding your manners and words on social media, and being inclusive. The chapter concludes with a discussion on the role of inclusion in mitigating emotional labor in the workplace.

Surprising to many is the knowledge that audience response systems have been in use since the 1960s. Reviewing the history of their use from the early hardwired systems to today’s computer-integrated systems provides the necessary scope to reflect on how they can best be used. Research shows that the systems have had consistent effects on motivation, and varying effects on student achievement over the years. The intent of this chapter is to consider lessons learned, consider the relation of technology and pedagogy, and to highlight elements of effective use. This chapter emphasizes the crucial role of pedagogy in determining whether audience response systems can lead to greater student achievement.

Abstract The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has caused an unprecedented crisis in all areas of human activity. In the field of education, this new and unexpected situation has led to an extraordinary shift of paradigm, as a considerable amount of institutions and faculty have been forced to pivot from purely face-to-face lessons to wholly online contexts, despite minimal preparation time and training. This paper aims to analyse the implications of this turn, as well as some of the key lessons that can be garnered from it. The gauge of this article will be on lessons learned, from the perspective of the changes that occurred in role of the teacher in the online context and the ramifications these have on teachers’ role and responsibilities.

Abstract This chapter explores the role of Africa's universities in facilitating the proliferation and success of entrepreneurship as a development strategy. In particular, the discussion is intended to articulate how Africa's universities can support the generation of much-needed employment opportunities by providing education and training in entrepreneurship. The chapter first examines the prevailing entrepreneurial ecosystem, (i) by providing context from the available literature on the demographic challenge Africa faces in light of its rapidly-growing youth population and associated high unemployment rates and (ii) by exploring the means by which entrepreneurship can be fostered. Thereafter, the chapter focuses on working models of education and training in entrepreneurship, including intentions and adaptations, real-world successes, lessons learned and potential future directions.
