In this article, we report findings regarding parent communication and daughter’s experiences of bullying and victimization in a sample of Hispanic families with seventh-grade daughters. About 57% of daughters reported experiencing any form of victimization and 37% reported engaging in some type of bullying behavior. Overall, the most common type of victimization reported was verbal/emotional bullying (36%). Nearly all parents agreed they had spoken with their daughters about the dangers of bullying perpetration (95%) and how to handle being victimized (96%), but there was no association between the frequency with which parents spoke with their daughters about bullying perpetration and their child’s victimization experiences. Additionally, the gap between parent and child acculturation did not appear to moderate this association. The high incidence of self-reported bullying perpetration and victimization experiences underscores the need for school nurses, parents, and school personnel to address bullying behavior.

Anaphylaxis is a rapidly occurring allergic reaction that is potentially life threatening. Recognition of the early signs and prompt treatment of anaphylaxis is critical. School nurses are tasked with educating nonmedical school personnel on the recognition and treatment of anaphylaxis and emphasizing that epinephrine is the first line of treatment for anaphylaxis. Fortunately, there is now availability of multiple epinephrine administration devices. However, this also means that there are more devices that school nurses and nonmedical assistive personnel need to learn about to be able to administer in an emergency. Once epinephrine is administered, emergency medical services must be activated. Education regarding what to expect after the administration of epinephrine with respect to side effects and onset of action is also necessary. Though adjunctive medicines, such as antihistamines and inhalers, may also be administered after the injection of epinephrine, they should not be solely relied on in anaphylaxis. School nurses are uniquely situated for this role, as they understand the local environment in a school and can assess and reassess the needs of the faculty and staff.

AbstractPrecursors and consequences of bullying have been widely explored, but much remains unclear about the association of moral and motivational factors. This study examined longitudinal associations between need for popularity, moral disengagement, and bullying perpetration. A total of 3017 participants, aged 11 to 16 years in wave 1 (49% girls; Mage = 13.15, SD = 1.09), were surveyed across four waves with six-month intervals. At the between-person level, cross-lagged modeling revealed a positive bidirectional association between moral disengagement and need for popularity; bullying perpetration was predicted by both need for popularity and moral disengagement. From the within-person level, random intercept cross-lagged analyses revealed that need for popularity predicted both moral disengagement and bullying perpetration. The results highlight the interplay between motivational and moral mechanisms that underlies bullying behavior.

Tooth avulsions occur when a tooth is displaced from its socket. Tooth avulsions are common dental injuries that may occur before, during, or after school. Therefore, it is essential that school nurses be well prepared to intervene when such a dental emergency arises. It is also imperative that school nurses and school personnel are fully equipped to manage a tooth avulsion. Time is of the essence when attempting to save an avulsed tooth. The goal is to successfully reinsert the avulsed tooth and to preserve the periodontal ligament. The school nurse is responsible for implementing the appropriate actions needed to save the avulsed tooth.

The manuscript entitled "Does television viewing increase obesity and reduce physical activity?" published by Robinson and coauthors in this issue of Pediatrics1 is a careful and well-written study of the effect of television viewing on adiposity and physical activity among sixth- and seventh-grade adolescent girls. In contrast to two other large studies of children,2,3 the authors failed to find a significant association between hours of television viewed and adiposity, measured by body mass index. Physical activity was weakly and inversely correlated to time spent viewing television. The latter observation is consistent with prior data which demonstrate a reciprocal relationship of fitness and television viewing,4 perhaps because television viewing displaces more vigorous physical activities.5

In Philadelphia, over 40% of youth are overweight or obese. The objective in this assessment was to learn about urban residents’ perspectives regarding the local food environment and its impact on eating behaviors. Using photo-elicitation, 20 adolescents reflected on their food environments through photographs and corresponding interviews. Without specific prompting from interviewers, every participant raised concerns about their school food environments, which they commonly found to be unhealthy and unappealing. Participants’ responses reflected four themes: (1) mixed reviews regarding the healthfulness of school vending machines, (2) lunch from home versus lunch from school, (3) factors that influenced food choice at school, and (4) critiques of school food environments. Students embraced the photo-elicitation approach as a way to convey their concerns and to suggest opportunities for improvements. School nurses, who are trusted by students and school personnel, are well-positioned to solicit student input and advocate for healthier school food environments.

Growth disorders may be associated with difficult psychosocial adjustment, learning problems, and specific health risks. Appropriate school health programming relies on school nurses who are skilled in growth assessment, management of psychosocial and behavioral problems, and effective communication with school personnel, children, families, and health care resources. A monograph and model individualized healthcare plans were developed for growth disorders in school-age children as an educational resource for school nurses. Knowledge of growth disorders among nurses receiving the monograph was evaluated in a random sample of 336 school nurses, members of the National Association of School Nurses. Knowledge of growth assessment and individualized health care plans for children with specific growth disorders was significantly higher in the group of school nurses who received the monograph. Specific obstacles to implementing school-based health care for children with growth disorders are discussed.

Bullying seems to have become an integral part of the lives of children today. The high incidence of bullying behavior in primary school-aged children in the family, school, and surrounding environment indicates the need for immediate interventions to address the problem of school-aged children. Some efforts should be made in the form of prevention, treatment and rehabilitations for victims of bullying behavior. One form of intervention that can be developed as an effort to prevent bullying behavior in school-aged children is Social Skill Training and Family Psycho education therapy. Through Social Skill Training and Family Psychoeducation can improve cognitive, psychomotor and affective school-aged children to prevent bullying behavior. Social Skill Training and Family Psycho education can be developed as a model in the prevention of Bullying behavior in school-aged children.

This study aimed to investigate whether communication patterns, peers’ involvement and gender different can be the predictors of adolescent bullying behavior. This study involved 193 adolescents of grade 8 and 9 with the most adolescents of 14 years old who had filled in questionnaires. The results showed the prevalence of adolescent involvement in bullying which was 62.69%. Parental communication patterns have an OR = 1.64 (95% CI=0.87-3.09). Peers involvement in bullying behavior (OR=1.92; 95% CI=1.01-3.66). Adolescent girls were more involved in bullying behavior (59.59%) compared to adolescent boys (OR=3.32; 95% CI=1.69-6.54). Poor parental communication patterns, peers influence negatively predict to the bullying behavior in adolescent. Bullying is higher in boys than girls where as boys has a greater chance of bullying than girls. Therefore, bullying intervention programs are needed in schools.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility that cognitive and affective variables form a reciprocal relationship when it comes to predicting future bullying perpetration. To this end, the bidirectional relationship between cognitive impulsivity and anger was evaluated in an effort to determine whether both cross-lagged pathways contributed to a rise in bullying behavior. The reciprocal hypothesis was tested in a sample of 1,160 early adolescents (567 boys, 593 girls) from the Illinois Study of Bullying and Sexual Violence (ISBSV). Cognitive impulsivity and anger were cross-lagged at Waves 1 and 2 of the ISBSV, after which they were correlated with bullying perpetration at Wave 3 in a three-wave longitudinal path analysis. Results from the path analysis identified the presence of a significant bidirectional association between Cognitive Impulsivity-1 and Anger-2 and between Anger-1 and Cognitive Impulsivity-2, with both cross-lags effectively predicting future bullying behavior.
