Background The need for improving knowledge and practice of palliative care delivered by health workers become an agenda in several countries. In order to measure the practice, an instrument is needed. The study analyzed the validity and reliability of the instrument to assess the physician’s practice in the management of patients with terminal diseases. Methods This was a cross-sectional study involving 89 physicians practicing in primary health care. The instrument of practice has been developed and resulted 5 domains consist of 20 items. An overview of reliability, construct validity, uni-dimensionality, and hierarchy of the person-items of the instrument were analyzed using Rasch Model. Results The reliability of the instrument is excellent with a person measure reliability of 0.85 and the item measure reliability of 0.96. Construct validity is confirmed with the MNSQ outfit values in the range of 0.54 to 1.59 and Pt Measure Corr. values in the range of 0.31 to 0.8. This instrument has a value of more than 20% unidimensionality which indicates the level of independence for items is good. Conclusion The instrument has good validity and reliability to assess physician’s practice in the management of patients with terminal disease.

Hope is important in the rehabilitation of persons with schizophrenia, through scales to measure hope are not appropriate for this population. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to identify the psychometric properties of the Schizophrenia Hope Scale-9 (SHS-9) using data from 83 people with schizophrenia in four mental health centers and 762 healthy persons from two universities in South Korea. The mean (standard deviation) SHS-9 score of the participants with schizophrenia and healthy participants was 11.24 (4.90) and 14.83 (3.10), respectively. Lower scores indicate a lower level of hope. The internal consistency alpha coefficient was 0.92 with a 4-week test-retest reliability of 0.89. Criterion-related construct validity was established by examining the correlation between the SHS-9 and the State-Trait Hope Inventory scores. Divergent validity was identified through a negative relationship of SHS-9 with the Beck Hopelessness Scale. The construct validity of the SHS-9 was confirmed through principal component analysis with extraction methods, which resulted in a one-factor solution, accounting for 49–60% of the total item variance.. This study provided evidence for the validity and reliability of the SHS-9; therefore, it could be used to measure hope in people with schizophrenia.

INTRODUCTION: Auxiliary Health Workers (AHWs) are the undergraduate 2nd  class health workforce of Nepal. Syndromic Sexually Transmitted Infection Case Management/Reproductive Health (SSCM/RH) training for AHWs is designed to develop knowledge, attitude and skills. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of the training in knowledge and practice of AHWs. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Achham district from where all AHWs were purposively selected for cross-sectional study. Total number of trained AHWs was 35 and untrained was 19, who were interviewed to fulfill the structured pretested questionnaire that included knowledge inventory and self reported practice. The data collected from29th May to 25th July, 2005. Written consent was taken from respondents after permission taken from Achham DHO. Statistical tests used were mean, median, SD, Mann-Whitney U test, Spearman's rho and chi-square. Values with p < 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS : All AHWs were male, with mean age of 32.1 years. Regarding knowledge, the scores in all syndromes diagnosis and treatment regimen were significantly different in two groups except in two syndromes. Two practices were found significant. The median knowledge score was 20 (IQR, 16-22) and 16 (IQR, 12-20) in trained and untrained respectively. Similarly, median practice score was found 14 (IQR, 10-16) and 7 (IQR, 6-9) in trained and untrained respectively. In aggregate, both the practice score (U=38.5, p<0.001, two-tailed) and the knowledge score (U=205, p=0.020, two-tailed) of trained group significantly differed from that of untrained. Knowledge and practice score was also found positively and moderately correlated (P=0.616, p<0.001, two-tailed).CONCLUSION: The training was effectivein bringing about changes both in knowledge and practice of AHWs. The higher the knowledge level, the higher the practice level.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/jucms.v2i3.11826 Journal of Universal College of Medical Sciences Vol.2(3) 2014: 34-37

Hope is essential in rehabilitating persons with schizophrenia, though scales to measure hope are not appropriate for this population. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to identify the psychometric properties of the Schizophrenia Hope Scale-9 (SHS-9) using data from 83 people with schizophrenia in four mental health centers and 762 healthy persons from two universities in South Korea. The total SHS-9 score is calculated by adding all items’ scores and ranges from 0 to 18. The mean (standard deviation) SHS-9 score of the participants with schizophrenia and healthy participants was 11.53 (SD = 4.78) and 14.78 (SD = 3.19), respectively. Lower scores indicate a lower level of hope. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was 0.92 with a four-week test-retest reliability of 0.89. Criterion-related construct validity was established by examining the correlation between the SHS-9 and the State-Trait Hope Inventory scores. Divergent validity was identified through a negative relationship of SHS-9 with the Beck Hopelessness Scale. In persons with schizophrenia and healthy college students, Bartlett’s test of sphericity yielded χ2 = 465.03 (p < 0.001) and χ2 = 2679.24 (p < 0.001) respectively. The values of the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) measure of sampling adequacy were 0.89 and 0.90, respectively. The construct validity of the SHS-9 was confirmed through principal component analysis with extraction methods, which resulted in a one-factor solution, accounting for 61.83% of the total item variance. This study provides evidence for the validity and reliability of the SHS-9; therefore, it could be used to study the relationships between hope and other variables (e.g., depression and recovery) in persons with schizophrenia and measure the effect of psychosocial interventions on their hope.

Preeclampsia is the onset of hypertension with proteinuria due to pregnancy, after 20 weeks' gestation or immediately after delivery. These symptoms can occur before 20 weeks if trophoblastic disease occurs. This study aims to determine the relationship between age and maternal parity with the incidence of pre-eclampsia in pregnant women in the work area of the Puskesmas Mangasa, Makassar City. The research design used in this study was descriptive analytic research with a cross sectional study design. Conducted from July to October 2018, with a sample of 70 respondents. In this study showed that there was no relationship between the age of pregnant women and the incidence of preeclampsia with a value of p (1.00)> 0.05 and there was no relationship between parity and the incidence of preeclampsia with a value of p (1.00)> 0.05. It is recommended for health workers to be intensive in detecting the presence of preeclampsia in pregnant women and counseling about the importance of routine antenatal care to as early as possible be aware of the risk of the occurrence of preeclampsia-eclampsia in pregnancy and for further researchers, further research is needed to find factors related to the incidence of preeclampsia so that the results are in accordance with the theory, such as parity, hypertension history and Antenatal Care examination.

Dietary adherence is one of the requirements in chronic disease management, which the success of hypertension management may correlate with the social support perceived by the patients. The study aimed to identify the relationship between social support and dietary adherence among patients with hypertension in Primary Health Centre, Tangerang. The study was a descriptive correlational, cross-sectional study, in which 120 respondents were recruited by using purposive sampling. Multidimensional Perceived of Social Support (MSPSS) and Dietary Adherence questionnaire was used based upon validity and reliability to measure social support and adherence. Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient was used to examine the relationship between social support and dietary adherence. The analysis result indicated that respondents who reported low support were 51 respondents (42.5%), and low dietary adherence was 53 respondents (44.2%). The analysis results showed there was a significant positive relationship between social support and dietary adherence among patients with hypertension, in which the power of correlation was moderate (r = 0.49, p < 0.05). Patients with hypertension who perceived higher social support more likely to adhere to the dietary of hypertension. The result suggests that health care providers need to facilitate support from friends, family, and significant others of the patients to achieve optimum dietary adherence.
