Stress-induced disorders such as anxiety represent the leading causes of adult disability worldwide. Previous studies indicate that yoga and other contemplative practices such as pranayama, or controlled yogic breathing techniques, may be effective in the treatment of mood disorders and stress. In this study, 142 individuals (mean age = 43 years; SD = 13.90) participated in a 3-day retreat program during which they learned Shambhavi Mahamudra kriya, which is a yogic practice that includes both deep breathing and meditation techniques. Participants were instructed to practice the kriya each day for 21 minutes. After 6 weeks of daily practice, participants reported subjectively lower levels of perceived stress (Perceived Stress Scale) and higher levels of general well-being (General Well-Being Scale) compared to baseline. These results support the notion that Shambhavi Mahamudra kriya may represent a natural treatment for stress reduction.

Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui tingkat stres remaja dan kebutuhan untuk mengembangkan video tutorial mindfulness-breathing meditation sebagai strategi dalam mengurangi stres remaja. Convenience sampling yang digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data pada 165 peserta didik. Alat ukur yang digunakan adalah perceived stress scale (PSS) dan studi kebutuhan video mindfulness-breathing meditation. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tingkat stres remaja yang tinggi (27 dari skor total 40). Perempuan memiliki tingkat stres yang lebih tinggi daripada laki-laki (27,2 vs 26,6), persentase perempuan yang mengalami stres tingkat tinggi lebih banyak daripada laki-laki (54,1%vs 41,3%). Meskipun prevalensi stres sangat tinggi di kalangan remaja, sebagian besar peserta didik sangat minim memiliki paparan materi mengenai cara mengurangi stres (80,15%) serta mengenai latihan bernafas dengan baik. Peserta didik juga sangat antusias untuk mempelajari meditasi pernafasan melalui video (100%). Diketahui juga bahwa pengembangan video mindfulness-breathing meditation sangat penting untuk membantu peserta didik dalam mengurangi stres mereka. Kata Kunci: Stres, Remaja, Mindfulness, Breathing Meditation   Abstract This research aims to determine the stress level of adolescents and the need to develop a mindfulness-breathing meditation video as a strategy to reduce adolescents’ stress. The convenience sampling was used to collect data form was 165 students. The measures are the perceived stress scale (PSS) and the needs of mindfulness-breathing meditation video. The results shows that the adolescent’ stress level is high (27 out of 40). Female has higher level stress than male (27,2 vs 26,6), the percentage of female who experience high level stress was outnumber male (54,1% vs 41,3%). Despite the high prevalence of stress among adolescent, most of students has minimum exposure to stress reduction (80,15%) as well as breathing exercises. All students enthusiastic to learn mindfulness-breathing meditation through video. It is recommended that development of mindfulness-breathing meditation video is crucial to help students in reducing their stress. Keywords: Stress, Adolescent, Mindfulness, Breathing Meditation

Objectives: The COVID-19 (SARS-CoV2) pandemic is wreaking havoc on healthcare systems and causing serious economic, social, and psychological anguish around the globe. Healthcare workers (HCWs) who diagnose and care for COVID-19 patients have been shown to suffer burnout, stress, and anxiety. Methods: In this study, we collected data from 150 frontline HCWs who had close contact with COVID-19 patients at several health facilities in the Sultanate of Oman. The participants completed an online survey that included the Perceived Stress Scale, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale, and the WHO-5 Well-Being Index. Results: The study found that a substantial number of healthcare professionals experienced relatively high levels of stress and anxiety, as well as suboptimal levels of well-being. Perceived stress and anxiety were significant predictors of HCWs’ well-being. Conclusions: This study adds to the increasing literature indicating harmful effects of COVID-19 on the mental health of HCWs.

Background. Cancer survivors use complementary therapies (CTs) for a variety of reasons; however, with interest and use reportedly on the rise and a widening range of products and practices available, there is a need to establish trends in and drivers of interest. We aimed to determine (1) frequencies of use, level of interest, and barriers for 30 specific CTs and (2) whether physical symptoms, perceived stress (PS), or spiritual well-being were related to interest levels. Method. A total of 212 cancer outpatients were surveyed at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary, Canada. Results. Overall, up to 75% of survivors already used some form of CTs since their diagnosis. The most highly used were the following: vitamins B12 and D, multivitamins, calcium, and breathing and relaxation exercises. Those who had not used CTs indicated highest interest in massage, vitamin B12, breathing and relaxation, mindfulness-based stress reduction, and antioxidants. The most frequently reported barriers for all CTs were not knowing enough about what a therapy was and not having enough evidence on whether it worked. High PS predicted higher interest for all CTs, but spirituality was not significantly related to any. Physical symptoms, anxiety, and depression were significant predictors of interest for some CTs. Conclusion. These findings provide a blueprint for future clinical efficacy trials and highlight the need for clinical practice guidelines.

Mahasiswa perlu diberi pembekalan agar lebih siap untuk memasuki dunia kerja. Strategi yang digunakan oleh universitas untuk mengatasinya adalah menyelenggarakan program internship. Tantangan yang harus dihadapi oleh mahasiswa adalah perbedaan situasi dan kondisi di lingkungan kampus dan instansi tempat ia melaksanakan program internship, sehingga perilaku yang ditampilkan pun harus berbeda. Perilaku di tempat kerja atau perilaku kerja (PK) adalah segala sesuatu yang dilakukan oleh seseorang di lingkungan kerjanya (Ivancevich, 2014). Salah satu faktor yang mempengaruhi perilaku adalah emosi, yang dapat disebabkan oleh stress. Sebagai mahasiswa tahun akhir, mereka masih dituntut untuk menyelesaikan tugas-tugas akhir. Tuntutan-tuntutan tersebut dikeluhkan sebagai faktor penyebab stress. Perceived Stress (PS) adalah perasaan atau pikiran yang dimiliki seseorang terhadap hal-hal dalam kehidupannya yang dapat membuatnya stress serta kemampuannya untuk mengatasi stress tersebut (Varghese, Norman, & Thavaraj, 2015). Kedekatan emosi dengan orang lain terbukti berkorelasi dengan well-being seseorang dan melindungi seseorang dari efek stress tingkat tinggi (Ammar, Nauffal, & Sbeity dalam King, Vidourek, Merianos, Singh, 2014). Dukungan emosi akan mengurangi hubungan yang membuat stress-depresi (Felsten, 1998, dalam King, Vidourek, Merianos, Singh, 2014). Dengan kata lain, Social Support (SS) akan membantu seseorang untuk mengatasi stress yang dirasakannya. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui peran PS dan SS terhadap PK pada mahasiswa internship. Metode penelitian ini adalah pendekatan kuantitatif dengan menggunakan Work Behavior Assessment, Personal Resource Questionnaire, dan Perceived Stress Scale. Kuesioner disebarkan pada 52 mahasiswa Fakultas Psikologi yang sedang mengikuti program internship. Hasil yang didapatkan adalah PS dan SS berperan signifikan terhadap PK (F = 4,296, p < 0,05). Purpose Effects of a mindfulness-based (MB) yoga practice on stress, burnout, and indicators of well-being among nurses and health care professionals (HCPs). Design A randomized controlled trial, 80 HCPs assigned to either MB yoga intervention or control group. Method The MB yoga intervention group ( n = 41) attended weekly yoga classes and practiced yoga independently. The control group ( n = 39) did not receive the yoga intervention. Study participants completed pre- and postintervention questionnaires, instruments included (a) Perceived Stress Scale; (b) Maslach Burnout Inventory; (c) Vitality subscale of the Medical Outcomes Study Short Form–36; (d) Global Sleep Quality item, (e) Mindfulness Awareness Survey, and (f) subscale of the Brief Serenity Scale. Diurnal salivary cortisol and blood pressure were assessed pre and postintervention. Results Significant improvements ( p < .01) noted in MB yoga compared with control for self-reported factors, including stress (Perceived Stress Scale), burnout (Maslach Burnout Inventory), vitality (Medical Outcomes Study Short Form–36), sleep (GSQ), serenity/inner haven (IH), and mindfulness (Mindfulness Awareness Survey). Diurnal cortisol slopes and blood pressure were not significantly improved. Conclusion The MB yoga intervention had a statistically significant effect on the health and well-being of nurses and HCPs, most specifically for measures of stress; perceived stress, burnout, vitality, sleep quality, serenity, and mindfulness.

The present study observed the possible predictive effect of perceived stress on the depressive symptoms of wives of alcohol-dependent persons. Participants of the study involved 204 selected wives of alcohol-dependent persons from the 20 Kudumbasree groups (Women self-help group in Kerala, India) who completed the Perceived stress scale and Depressive Anxiety Stress Scale that measured perceived stress and depressive symptoms respectively. The results of the study showed a significantly positive relationship between perceived stress and depressive symptoms. Moreover, a regression analysis of the data showed that a significant variance of 60.3% of the depressive symptoms. The present study clearly gave the idea of perceived stress reduction can lessen the development of depressive symptoms among the participants. Thus, the present study recommends the need for a psychotherapeutic intervention program to be developed that can reduce perceived stress and depressive symptoms among wives of alcohol-dependent persons.

Objectives. We aimed to investigate the effects of brief supportive expressive group therapy with mindfulness for cancer patients and to assess the utility of heart rate variability (HRV) as a biomarker of distress and treatment effect. Methods. A total of 28 female patients with nonmetastatic cancer at a university hospital in South Korea received a 4-week modified group therapy for distress reduction. The BESTMIND (Brief Expression and Support Therapy with Mindfulness) program consisted of supportive–expressive group therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction. The subjective outcomes of distress, anger, sleep quality, and sense of well-being and the physiological outcome of HRV were assessed before and after the program. Results. After the program, patients showed significantly reduced distress, perceived stress, anger, and sleep disturbance and increased quality of life. No significant change was observed in the degree of mindfulness. A significantly increased SD in the normal beat-to-beat intervals and normalized high-frequency (HF 0.15-0.4 Hz) power from spectral analysis were observed after treatment. According to the correlation analyses, HF power correlated with depression scores, and normalized HF power was associated with depression, anxiety, perceived stress, and anger at baseline. The pretreatment and posttreatment comparison indicated that an increase in HF power was associated with a decrease in anger. Conclusions. These results suggest the effectiveness of this modified group-based program for distress reduction and also provide preliminary evidence for the use of HRV as a biomarker of distress and recovery. HF power from HRV variables may serve as a quantitative biomarker of the treatment response of distress management, including anger.

Families of children with disabilities often experience high levels of stress associated with taking care of a child with disability. The perceived stress by the caregivers may often lead to negative outcomes in day-to-day functioning for caregivers themselves as well as the child. Mindfulness as an element of consciousness has been acknowledged to promote positivity and well-being among individuals. It is a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations. This chapter focuses on the application of mindfulness-based therapies for caregivers (parents) of children with cerebral palsy. This chapter also entails in detail therapeutic techniques like Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), its in-depth description, background, and applications as an effective approach for the intervention of caregivers.

Skin has long been recognised as “organ of expression”, according to Sack, as cited in (Walker & Papadopoulos, 2005) and serves as the boundary between ourselves and outside world. While the skin and central nervous system are ectodermal derivatives, a good part of an individual’s perception takes place through skin. Psychopathological factors can play a significant role in development of skin disorders, can exacerbate pre-existing skin disorders, or dermatology patients may suffer the psychosocial consequences of disfigurement. The purpose of the study was to compare patients with acne, psoriasis, and melanosis on perceived stress, cognitive emotional regulation and psychological general well-being and also to compare patients with skin disease with non-disease group. The study included 30 skin patients (acne =10, melanosis=10, psoriasis= 10) ages ranging from 20 to 40 years and 30 non disease individuals of same age group. Perceived stress scale, cognitive emotional regulation questionnaire, psychological general well-being inventory were administered to the patients. Analytical evaluation was done by independent t test and ANOVA. The results of the present study revealed that there is significant difference for perceived stress and psychological general well-being among skin patients and non-disease group. There is significant difference between psoriasis, melanosis and acne with respect to perceived stress and positive wellbeing. Psoriasis patients have comparatively higher perceived stress and acne patients have comparatively higher positive well-being. The study is to stimulate professionals working in the field of dermatology and mental health to explore their supportive communication and increased awareness regarding the difficulties that patients with skin diseases face.

Instagram is one of the fastest growing social networking platforms. A body of evidence suggests that Instagram problematic use and addiction have negative effects on the psychological well-being of young people. The Instagram Addiction Scale, a self-report tool assessing Instagram problematic use and addiction, has been developed recently. The aim of the present study was to validate the Instagram Addiction Scale in the Greek language and to assess its psychometric properties. An online and on-print self-report survey was conducted among Greek youth, aged between 18 and 24 years. The survey included the Instagram Addiction Scale, the Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale, the Perceived Stress Scale, and the Big Five Inventory. A total of 967 respondents participated in the study. The analysis suggested that the Greek version of the Instagram Addiction Scale has good psychometric properties. The principal component factor analysis for construct validity generated two subscales as the original instrument: social effect and impulsion. Internal consistency for the two subscales and the scale’s total score was satisfactory, with Cronbach’s α at 0.76, 0.85 and 0.88, respectively. Correlation analyses revealed positive associations between the perceived stress scale and social effect, and the Instagram Addiction Scale’s total score (p<0.0001 and p=0.002 respectively). This is the first study validating the Instagram Addiction Scale in Greek youth, which can be used by researchers and practitioners for the evaluation of youth problematic use of Instagram.
