Abstract Background Neonatal sepsis is the major cause of morbidity and mortality in neonates. Frequency of bacterial sepsis is affected by seasonal variations. This study was done to rule out the effects of seasonal variation on neonatal sepsis and to determine isolated bacterial agents and their antibiotic sensitivity profile. Results This cross-sectional study included100 neonates with suspected sepsis, and conducted during summer and winter seasons. High frequencies of neonatal morbidities were observed like poor feeding (98%), Jaundice (82%), pallor (76%), respiratory distress (66%) and convulsions (64%) in winter, whereas fever (40%) and edema (12%) in summer. Statically significant correlation was found between the seasonal variations and different symptomatic expression of bacteremia like jaundice, respiratory distress, convulsions and poor feeding (p value < 0.001) in winter, while pallor, fever and edema (p value < 0.05) in summer. Our study showed high proportion of neonatal infection with Gram negative bacteria, as (40%) Pseudomonas aeruginosa and (16%) Escherichia coli in winter season, while (22%) Enterobacter in summer. Carbapenems was very effective against Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates, Klebsiella pneumonia, Enterobacter, Acinetobacter, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria, while theses bacterial isolates showed (80–100%) resistance to Unasyn and Cephalosporins (3rd generation). Conclusion This study showed that Seasonal variations had effects on neonatal sepsis regarding their both different symptomatic expressions and bacterial isolates. Most of isolates were sensitive to Carbapenems and resistant to both Unasyn and Cephalosporins (3rd generation).

Urinary tract infection caused by bacteria leads to inflammation. It is an important infection which can cause a highly morbidity rates in both males and females. The aim of the present study was determine the percentage prevalence of the UTI among the general population and the percentage of the bacterial isolates in the Urine samples. Among 150 samples bacterial isolates were obtained which included Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, Proteus vulgaris, Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The highest prevalence of specific bacteria was found to be Escherichia coli recorded among all the UTI patients to be (55.55%) the least percentage among the bacteria were Klebsiella pneumonia, Proteus vulgaris, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterobacter aerogenes which recorded 16.66%, 5.55%, 11.11% and 11.11% respectively. Results of the study showed that of femaleshad UTI more than the males.

Thirty nine isolates of Escherichia coli, twenty two isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae and sixteen isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from urinary tract infected patients were analyzed by antimicrobial susceptibility typing and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD)-PCR. Antibiotic susceptibility testing was carried out by microdilution and E Test methods. From the antibiotic susceptibility, ten patterns were recorded (four for E. coli, three for K. pneumoniae and three for P. aeruginosa respectively). Furthermore, genotyping showed seventeen RAPD patterns (seven for E. coli, five for K. pneumoniae and five for P. aeruginosa respectively). In this study, differentiation of strains of E. coli, K. pneumoniae and P. aeruginosa from nosocomial infection was possible with the use of RAPD.

This study investigated phytochemical content, radical scavenging and antibacterial activities of aqueous extract of leaves of Jatropha curcas Linn. Quantitative phytochemical analyses of alkaloids, phenols, tannins and flavonoids contents were carried out; radical scavenging activity was assessed using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical and hydrogen peroxide inhibition assays while Disc diffusion and Agar well (ditch) diffusion methods were used for antibacterial activity against Klebsiella pneumonia, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphilococcus aureus and Proteus species at 62.5, 125, 250 and 500 mg/mL. The extract contained alkaloids (1.600± 0.58 %), tannins (0.121 ± 0.00 mg/mL), phenols (0.463 ± 0.06 mg/mL) and flavonoids (0.672 ± 0.00 mg/mL), and showed radical scavenging activities against DPPH (IC50 = 21.24) and hydrogen peroxide (15.67 mg/mL) which were less than that of Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA); IC50 = 3.92 (DPPH) and 6.19 mg/mL (hydrogen peroxide) respectively. It also showed antibacterial activity against Klebsiella pneumonia, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa at 250 and 500 mg/ml (MIC = 125 mg/mL), which were resistant to ampicillin, chloxacillin and erythromycin, and the extract was inactive against Staphilococcus aureus and Proteus species at these concentrations, though all were sensitive to gentamycin. This shows that the aqueous extract of leaves of Jatropha curcas Linn may possess some of the folkloric properties claimed.

Background: Colistin-resistant Gram-negative bacteria is a rapidly emerging global threatgenerated a sense of public alarm. Objective: To combat this challenge a study was designedto evaluate the fast spreading infections by colistin-resistant pathogens in the tertiary care rural hospital of Bangladesh. Materials and Methods: To study isolation ofpathogenic gram-negative bacilli,clinical sample (n-640) of hospitalized patients of Khwaja Yunus Ali Medical College Hospital in Enayetpur, Bangladesh during the 1st quarter of the year 2019 were used. The bacterial isolates were screened for meropenem and colistin-resistance. Results: A total of 156 bacterial isolates were studied which included Escherichia coli (n-112), Klebsiella pneumoniae (n-14), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (n-27), and Salmonella typhi (n-3). Antibiotic sensitivity testing showed that 32/156(20%) and 119/156 (76%) isolates were resistant to meropenem and colistin, respectively. whereas 50/156 (32%) isolates were resistant to both antibiotics. Escherichia coli, K. pneumoniae, pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Salmonella typhi isolates respectivelywere 112/156 (72%), 14/156 (9%). 27/156 (17%), and 3/156 (2%). Conclusion: Colistin is typically used as salvage therapy, or last-line treatment, for MDR gramnegative infections.But there is worrisome therapeutic scenario in our study finding of colistin resistance is 76% in Gram-negative bacteria of the clinical isolates. We investigated the prevalence of sarcocystosis in 826 goats slaughtered in the winter season from November to April in northern Iraq. The prevalence of macrocysts was on average 34%, with only 20% infected animals in November, but 46% in February. The infection rate in 1-, 3- and 6-year-old goats was 4%, 48%, and 83%, respectively. The highest specificity of infection was in the oesophagus (99%) and the lowest in the diaphragm (3%). Grossly, we identified 2 forms of macroscopic sarcocysts, fat and thin, with different morphological characteristics. The prevalence of microcysts was 97% and no effects of age, sex and seasonal variations were observed. Development of microcysts in the small intestine of dogs and cats has also been investigated. The pre-patent period in experimentally infected dogs was 12–14 days and the patent period lasted 64–66 days. A dog shed about 155 million sporocysts, but no sporocysts were shed by cats that had been fed the same infected tissues, thus identifying the microcysts as Sarcocystis capracanis.

Background: Diabetic foot is one of the most feared complications of diabetes and is the leading cause of hospitalization in diabetic patients. Limb-threatening diabetic infections are usually polymicrobial involving multiple aerobic and anaerobic organisms. Methodology: The present study was a cross sectional study, conducted in the department of surgery and microbiology at BIRDEM General Hospital, Dhaka, over a period of 9 months during January 2017- September' 2017. The study included a total of 77 adult patients of clinically diagnosed diabetic foot patients presenting to outpatient department and emergency ward. The standard case definition of diabetic foot is 'any pathology occurring in the foot of a patient suffering from diabetes mellitus or as a result of long term complication of diabetes mellitus'. Results: Majority 17(22.1%) patients had Klebsiella pneumonia, 14(18.2%) had Pseudomonas aeruginosa, 11(14.3%) had Staphylococcus aureus, 10(13.0%) had Escherichia coli, 6(7.8%) had Coagulase-negative staphylococci and 8(10.4%) had Providencia spp. In Escherichia coli 100% sensitivity to imipenem, 70% to amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, amikacin, piperacillin-tazobactam. In Coagulasenegative Staphylococci 83.3% sensitivity to tetracycline, 66.7% to ceftriaxone. In Proteus mirabilis 100% sensitivity to tetracycline, amikacin, ceftriaxone, imipenem, piperacillin-tazobactam. In Enterococcus spp.75.0% sensitivity to tetracycline. In Citrobacter spp. 100% sensitivity to imipenem. Conclusion: Common organism found in diabetic foot ulcer patients were Klebsiella pneumonia, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Coagulase-negative staphylococci and Providencia spp. In tetracycline, amikacin, ceftriaxone, imipenem, piperacillin-tazobactam was 100% sensitive in Proteus mirabilis and only imipenem found in Escherichia coli and Citrobacter spp. Anwer Khan Modern Medical College Journal Vol. 10, No. 1: Jan 2019, P 50-55

Latar belakang. Peningkatan resistensi antibiotik di antara bakteri penyebab pneumonia nosokomial yang didapat di rumah sakit telah banyak dilaporkan. Jika kita tidak mengenal pola kepekaan kuman di suatu rumah sakit akan menyulitkan pemberian terapi empiris awal. Tujuan. Mengetahui profil kuman penyebab pneumonia yang didapat di rumah sakit pada anak serta uji sensitivitas terhadap beberapa antibiotik.Metode. Studi deskriptif retrospektif dengan sumber data yang berasal dari rekam medis Laboratorium Mikrobiologi RSAB Harapan Kita periode Januari hingga Juni 2010. Spesimen adalah semua spesimen saluran respiratorik dari pasien dengan diagnosis pneumonia yang dirawat. Biakan dan uji resistensi dilakukan menurut standar National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards(NCCLS).Hasil. Didapatkan 116 spesimen biakan dan di antaranya 4 (3,4%) steril. Dari 112 biakan positif, 79.5% di antaranya adalah bakteri gram negatif berturut-turut dari yang paling dominan adalah Pseudomonas sp.(22,4%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa(18,1%), Stenotrophomonas maltophilia(9.5%), Serratia marcescens(8,6%),Enterobacter aerogenes(7,8%), Klebsiella pneumonia, Bacillus sp., dan Escherichia coli(masing-masing 5,2%). Golongan Pseudomonasmemiliki sensitivitas terhadap ceftazidime, amikacin serta netilmicin.Kesimpulan. Basil gram negatif aerob (79,5%) merupakan mikroorganisme penyebab yang paling dominan. Ceftazidime, diikuti terhadap amikacin serta netilmicin masih mempunyai sensitivitas yang tinggi sehingga dapat dipakai sebagai terapi awal VAP.

Nosocomial infection is a rising problem in developing countries. Microorganisms Isolated from three private and public hospital environmental surfaces in Akure Metropolis, Ondo State, Nigeria were investigated in this study. Bacterial and fungal organisms were isolated and compared among the three hospitals. The study revealed that bacteria were the most predominant microorganisms found in the hospital environmental surfaces than fungi. Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Bacillus cereus were the bacterial isolates while fungi include Aspergillus fumigatus, Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans.  Staphylococcus aureus was found to be predominant bacteria but Aspergillus funmigatus was the predominant fungi. The result showed that the microbial loads of the public hospitals were higher than that of the private hospitals. The bacteria load of the male ward was found to be higher than that of the female ward while the fungal loads of each of the hospital environmental surfaces of female were higher than that of the male. The study revealed that bacteria were the most predominant microorganisms found in the hospital environment than fungi. Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Bacillus cereus were the bacterial isolates while fungi include Aspergillus fumigatus, Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans.  Staphylococcus aureus was found to be predominant bacteria. All the hospital environmental surfaces were contaminated with one or more microorganisms in the course of the research.


It is a great concern that extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) and non-ESBL uropathogenic micro-organisms have been worldwide illustrated to increase multidrug resistance. To study the prevalence and patterns of uropathogens, and antimicrobial susceptibilities profiles of ESBL and non-ESBL producing bacterial infection in a tertiary level health service center of Bangladesh. The prevalence of ESBL producing uropathogens and their antimicrobial resistance patterns were identified in 176 isolates from patients with UTI. ESBL and non-ESBL producing bacterial isolates and their antibiotic sensitivity and resistance patterns were distinguished from the 176 patients of suspected urinary tract infection. The Double-disc diffusion test was done to determine the presence of ESBL-producing bacterial strains. The most widely ESBL positive uropathogen was Escherichia coli (87%), followed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, (6.8%), Enterococcus spp. (3.4%), Acinetobacter spp. (2.5%) and non-ESBL positive E. coli (41.4), Staphylococcus saprophyticus (25.9%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (17.2%), Staphylococcus aureus (10.3%), and Klebsiella pneumoniae (5.2%). The current investigation found most frequently Escherichia coli in both ESBL and non-ESBL uropathogenic groups as 87% and 41.4% respectively. Generally, a large number of antibiotic resistance patterns and ESBL producing common bacterial isolates were found in this study which increases the public health problem. Therefore, for safe human life, we ought to be taking appropriate action against the threat.

Abstract The study was conducted to obtain the alcoholic extract of the licorice roots plant and to test its effectiveness against diagnosed bacterial isolates. This research was conducted at the Food Contamination Research Center/Department of Environment and Water/Ministry of Science and Technology. The results showed the following: 1-80% ethyl alcohol was used to obtain the alcoholic extract using a saxolite device, and the activity of the extract was tested against four bacterial isolates diagnosed in the Food Contamination Research Center, which included two gram-negative isolates of Escherichia Coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and two gram-positive isolates of Bacillus Cereus and Staphylococcus aeastureus by a method, in addition to yeast by Diffusion method. The study included two treatments of biscuits with alcoholic extract (A) at a concentration of 10% and compared to the control treatment (B) without any adding and for preservation periods (1, 4, 8, 15, 22) days, and microbial tests were conducted for the biscuits. The alcoholic extract showed a lethal activity to microorganisms and no bacterial cell appeared in the biscuit samples except for the incubation period (22) days for storing biscuits, which recorded the presence of fungi (2) cells/ml. Conducting sensory evaluation of the treatments (A, B) for biscuits where there were no significant differences (P<0.05) for sensory attributes except for flavor and flakes of biscuits.
