Much research on people's seismic adjustment activity in highly seismic areas has assumed that low levels of adjustment are attributable to insufficient awareness of seismic risk. Empirical evidence for this assumption is weak, and there is growing appreciation of the role played by sociocultural and emotional variables in risk perception and behavior. This study explored these socio-cultural and emotional dimensions via 144 interviews and questionnaires, with matched samples of locals in Seattle (United States), Osaka (Japan), and Izmir (Turkey). The data showed that high awareness of possible seismic adjustment measures was not translated into behavior, with all sites demonstrating low adjustment uptake, though the North Americans adopted significantly more adjustments than the other cultures. Thematic analysis of the interview data suggested that adjustment behavior was undermined by anxiety, distrust, distancing self from earthquake risk and fatalistic beliefs. The paper concludes by recommending how culture-specific disaster mitigation plans may be developed to address these factors.

Abstract>Three species are recognized in the North American genus Megetra LeConte. The most distinctive of these anatomically and ecologically is M. cancellata (Brandt and Erichson), which ranges discontinuously from Arizona and New Mexico to the state of Hidalgo in México and occurs in limited sympatry with both of its congeners. Megetra vittata (LeConte) ranges from northern Arizona to western Texas. It appears to be strictly allopatric with, and similar ecologically to, M. punctata, new species, which ranges from southern Arizona and New Mexico to Durango, México. Specific diagnoses are made on the basis of characters of adult and, for M. cancellata and M. punctata, larval anatomy. Intraspecific variation in several adult characters is analyzed. Notes on the seasonal distribution, habitat, and behavior of the adult beetles are included.

OBJECTIVE: The study presents the Brazilian norms for 240 new stimuli from International Affective Picture System (IAPS), a database of affective images widely used in research, compared to the North-American normative ratings. METHODS: The participants were 448 Brazilian university students from several courses (269 women and 179 men) with mean age of 24.2 (SD = 7.8), that evaluated the IAPS pictures in the valence, arousal and dominance dimensions by the Self-Assessment Manikin (SAM) scales. Data were compared across the populations by Pearson linear correlation and Student's t-tests. RESULTS: Correlations were highly significant for all dimensions; however, Brazilians' averages for arousal were higher than North-Americans'. CONCLUSIONS: The results show stability in relation to the first part of the Brazilian standardization and they are also consistent with the North-American standards, despite minor differences relating to interpretation of the arousal dimension, demonstrating that IAPS is a reliable instrument for experimental studies in the Brazilian population.

Kota Baru is the satellite city of Bandar Lampung. The city is prepared for the expansion of the city of Bandar Lampung. Zonation map of earthquake risk is required for Kota Baru due to its location within the reach of earthquake energy of Semangko subduction fault. In this study, we model the earthquake-prone zone map based on the soil characteristics (site effect) combined with the underground layer model to get a detailed description of the horizontal and vertical soil character. The microtremor method is performed to obtain the zonation effect mapping. Whereas, the ground layer modeling is obtained using the geoelectrical method. The modeling results show that the study area is far from tectonic activity based on the history of past earthquake events. However, this area has a large sediment thickness and has a low dominant frequency value, so it is an area that is vulnerable to earthquakes

Aim:This article presents findings from an interpretive phenomenological study that illuminates unique characteristics of the different social representations of antenatal primigravida and multigravida women who book to birth their babies in a birth center, hospital, or at home.Methods:Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 19 women and analyzed by interpretive phenomenological analysis.Findings:Analysis revealed different social representations independent of each other that illustrate how these social groups, determined by women’s collective voices, are uniquely characterized by group views, beliefs, misinterpretations, and preconceptions that establish what influences women in decision-making about choice of birthplace.Conclusion:Women make decisions about what they want for themselves in this birthing experience. These decisions are made long before this impending experience. Recognizing the different social representations of women in pregnancy reveals deeper insight into the complexities of women’s decision-making about birth choices and highlights why some women might opt for certain choices. Knowing that some women may make decisions based on little or misrepresented information confirms midwives are best placed in their interactions with women to provide positive influences, empowering them to make decisions based upon what they want for themselves. This affirms the woman and her midwife should remain partners in the decision-making process.

Telah dilakukan analisis percepatan tanah maksimum gempa bumi di Kota Manado menggunakan metode Donovan dan McGuire. Kota Manado merupakan bagian dari lengan utara Pulau Sulawesi terletak pada batas pertemuan beberapa lempeng besar sehingga wilayah ini sangat rawan akan goncangan gempa bumi. Upaya mitigasi perlu dilakuakn sejak dini untuk memperkecil dampak resiko gempa bumi tersebut. Salah satu upaya mitigasi adalah memetakan percepatan tanah maksimum (peak ground acceleration) di permukaan. Penentuan variasi nilai percepatan tanah maksimum menggunakan metode Donovan dan metode McGuire. Data yang digunakan adalah data hypocenter gempa yang dikumpulkan dari dua katalog yakni data USGS dan ANSS selama selang pengamatan Februari 1963 sampai Agustus 2017 meliputi radius 500 km dari Kota Manado. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa percepatan tanah maksimum di Kota Manado menggunkan metode Donovan sekitar 42.12 gal sampai dengan 51.82 gal sedangkan metode Mc Guire diperoleh nilai percepatan tanah sekitar 59.13 gal sampai 72.53 gal.The peak ground acceleration analysis in Manado city has been done using Donovan and McGuire method. Manado City is part of the north arm of Sulawesi Island located at the boundary of several major plate meetings so that this region is very prone to earthquake shocks. Mitigation efforts need to be done early to minimize the impact of the earthquake risk. One mitigation effort is to map the peak ground acceleration on the surface. Determination of peak ground acceleration variation using the Donovan and McGuire method. The data used are earthquake hypocenter data collected from two catalogs namely USGS and ANSS data during the observation interval February 1963 to August 2017 covering a radius of 500 km from Manado City. The result of the analysis shows that the peak ground acceleration in Manado City uses Donovan method about 42.12 gal up to 51.82 gal while Mc Guire method obtained the peak ground acceleration a value of  about 59.13 gal to 72.53 gal.

Bearing in mind the absence of specific legal norm on “fashion design” and the lack of expertise of ourjudges, Brazilian courts have recognized some degree of protection for designs granted by the fashion industry.They do not deny protection, as the North Americans who exclude the utilitarian aspects, nor even declarerights as vast as in French law. The trend of the judged in Brazil is in an intermediate position. That is, they aimto encourage innovation, on the one hand, and on the other, limit copying, requiring incremental elements toprovide protection.

The Korean War represented the first American experience with the problem of meeting local Communist aggression by means of limited, if costly, warfare. But despite the revulsion with that experience, and the “new look” at military strategy and foreign policy, it may not be the last. The character of recent weapons developments and the passing of our thermonuclear monopoly make it probable that in the future, as in the past, American policy-makers will be forced to consider the alternative of local conflict, with all its problems and risks, in determining how to respond to the threat or actuality of Communist moves in the peripheral areas.In these circumstances, analyses of American policy-making immediately before and during the Korean War may well illuminate the perspectives and considerations relevant to this difficult and dangerous type of operation. Here, no more can be done than toexamine the effect of strategic planning and estimates of Communist intentions and behavior on the decision to commit American forces to the defense of South Korea. This decision, and even the crucial decision to commit ground forces to eventual offensive operations against the aggressor, was made within afew days of the North Korean attack. Attention, accordingly, is focused on American policy reactions to the war in the first week or ten days following June 25, 1950.

Abstract. Intense orographic precipitation associated with the Central Range was analysed using data of maximum accumulated precipitation in 24 h, occurring between 1958 and 2010. The 18 selected episodes were associated with a southwesterly tropospheric flow, a low-level jet, and high moisture flux at low levels. The observed moisture flux was higher than 100 (m g(s kg)−1) and the dry and wet Froude numbers were greater than 1. The selected area to study this synoptic situation was Gredos, broad and high range, which is located in the eastern part of the Central Range and generates a leeward orographic shadow. The effect of the Central Range on the spatial distribution of precipitation on the Iberian Peninsula plateau results in a sharp increase in precipitation in the south of the Central Range, followed by a decrease to the north of this range.

This study identified helpful and unhelpful encouragement at mass participation running events and explored the meaning that runners found in encouragement. First, 10 k and half-marathon postevent surveys differentiated instructional and motivational components of helpful and unhelpful support. Second, an inductive, reflexive thematic analysis of 14 interviews highlighted the reciprocal relationship between the crowd and runners, whereby quality of support was reflected in runners’ emotions and behavior. Participants drew pride in participation and belief from the crowd, and they wanted to “give back” through doing their best. Personal and authentic support was particularly valued. Although support was widely appreciated, at times it created a pressure to “perform.” As a novel intervention based on our combined findings, we recommend that crowds, event organizers, and psyching teams give encouragement “with IMPACT” (Instructional; Motivational; Personalized; Authentic; Confidence-building; Tailored to the distance). Crowds should also demonstrate the “core conditions” of authenticity, empathy, and being nonjudgmental within their encouragement.

Religion and culture play important roles in influencing end-of-life communication among the elderly. However, little is known about end-of-life communication among elderly nursing home residents. A qualitative study involving a sample of 13 elderly residents of a non- government nursing home in the north of Peninsular Malaysia was conducted to investigate residents’ attitudes and ideas about their end-of-life preferences. Thematic analysis was performed to identify major themes emerging from the interviews. This study found that elderly residents actively avoided end-of-life communication, but that their cultural and religious beliefs remained of paramount importance. It is hoped that these findings will provide a platform upon which to improve current nursing home care in Malaysia.
