Schizophyllum commune or split gill mushroom is a nutrient-rich natural food ingredient. Even during mycelium growth, S. commune could produce the bioactive compounds including phenolic and flavonoid compounds. The aim of this research was to characterize the production of bioactive compounds during mycelium growth period of S. commune cultured onto different eight edible cereal media (sorghum, corn, barley, wheat, oat, jasmine rice, Mun Poo rice and riceberry rice). The antioxidant activities and mycelial biomass were also observed during their growth. The results show that the highest mycelial growth rate was obtained onto barley and jasmine rice, while the lowest one was found in sorghum and corn. The concentration of phenolic compounds increased along with the mycelial growth. The fungal culture on wheat significantly exhibited the highest production of phenolic compounds which was 8.56 ± 1.09 mg GAE/g DW on day 8.The highest flavonoid production of 577.35 ± 29.93 μg CE/g DW, wasremarkably found onto barley from day 6. The degradation of certain flavonoidsin cereal materials by S. commune was also observed, particularly in riceberryrice. Antioxidant activity of cultured cereals was depended on the initial activitiesof materials and was mainly increased by S. commune metabolism. The DPPH•and ABTS•+ scavenging activities were sharply increased at day 4 which was earlystage of log phase of S. commune. At day 8, most of cereal media exhibited highDPPH• activity with a half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) range of 3.83-5.80 mg DW/mL, except jasmine rice. Only wheat and oat could significantly givethe highest ABTS•+ scavenging activity which was in an IC50 range of 2.38-3.27mg DW/mL. The highest FRAP activity with a median effective concentration (EC50)of 2.14 ± 0.23 mg DW/mL, was observed in barley which corresponded with itshighest flavonoid content. Antioxidant activities of S. commune culture onto cerealmedia were correspondent with their phenolic and flavonoid contents. Therefore,this study assured that several antioxidative substances were interestinglyproduced by using S. commune cultured onto the selected edible cereals, whichcould be possibly developed as a new supplement or active ingredient forpharmaceutical and food industries.

The fatty acid (FA), polyphenol content and evaluation of the antioxidant capacity of exhausted Myrtus communis berries (EMB) resulting from the production of myrtle liqueur were assessed. All parts of the exhausted berries exhibited high concentrations of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and phenolic compounds. The lipid fraction contained a high amount of poly unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), mainly represented by linoleic acid (>70%). Of the phenolic acids evaluated by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry, ellagic acid was the most predominant (>50%), followed by gallic and quinic acids. Quercetin and quercetin3-O-rhamnoside were the most abundant flavonoids. The seed extracts showed a higher antioxidant potential than the pericarp extracts; the same trend was observed for total phenolic compounds evaluated by spectrophotometric assay. The overall high content of bioactive compounds and the high antioxidant potential of this byproduct sustain its suitability for a number of industrial applications, such as a food ingredient in novel foods, an additive in cosmetic formulations or a component of animal feed formulations.

Hypochaeris laevigata var. hipponensis (Asteraceae) is an endemic plant from Algeria. In the current study, we analyzed for the first time its chemical composition, especially phenolic constituents of dichloromethane (DCM), ethyl acetate (EA), and n-butanol (BuOH) fractionsof the aerial parts of Hypochaeris laevigata var. hipponensis by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The number of phenolic compounds detected in DCM, EA, and BuOH fractions were found to be 9, 20, and 15, respectively. More specifically, 12 phenolic acids were detected. Among them, quinic acid, chlorogenic acid, and caffeic acid were the most abundant ones. Meanwhile, only seven flavonoids were detected. Among them, rutin, apigetrin, and isoquercitrin were the major ones. We also determined the total phenolic and flavonoid contents, and fraction EA showed the highest values, followed by BuOH, and DCM fractions. Furthermore, the antioxidant action was dictated by five methods and the tested plant fractions demonstrated a noteworthy antioxidant action.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of temperature on the content of bioactive compounds of fruits of guabiju (Myrcianthes pungens (O. Berg) D. Legrand). The peel, pulp and seed of fresh guabiju were analyzed in relation to physical-chemical composition, metals, color, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, anthocyanins, vitamin C and antioxidant activity. On the dehydrated samples at temperature of 60 °C, where also determined the moisture and water activity. The fractions of the fruit showed high amounts of metals. After drying, moisture of 1.3, 1.0 and 0.9% were observed for peel, pulp and seed and water activity of 0.44 to 0.54. All the samples darkened, with less variation in the dehydrated peel (∆E 9.2). The samples showed high values of bioactive compounds, and in the fresh peel were observed higher levels of phenolic compounds (8459.8 mg EGA/100g dry extract), anthocyanins (152.0 mg/100 dry extract) and vitamin C (222.9 mg/100g) and on the dehydrated seed higher value of flavonoids (7480.7 mg EQ/100g dry extract). There was 86.3% degradation of anthocyanins in the dehydrated peel. The best values of antioxidant activities were obtained for the dehydrated peel (IC50 1.37 mg/mL), seed (IC50 1.49 mg/mL) and in the fresh peel (IC50 1.41 mg/mL).

Recently, several works have been done in order to study antioxidant compounds like resveratrol present in oilseeds since they are able to protect from cells damage related to heart disease and cancer. In the present research a chemical analysis and the identification of bioactive compounds of peanuts, nuts and pistachios varieties were carried out. The <strong>walnut</strong> variety showed the highest content of total phenolic compounds (1404 ± 23 mg GAE/100 g) and antioxidant capacity (191 ± 4.2 μmol TE/g). Phenolic compounds resveratrol, catechin, epicatechin and quercetin were identified in all samples.

In this work, we report the phenolic composition and bioactivity of the aerial parts of three species of Sarcocapnos (S. enneaphylla, S. pulcherrima, and S. saetabensis) to study their potential as sources of bioactive compounds to revalorize them and contribute to the conservation of these plant species. Samples were collected in different locations in the province of Jaén (southeast of Spain), and qualitative and quantitative analyses of phenolic compounds were performed by high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array and mass spectrometry detection. S. enneaphylla presented the highest concentration of phenolic compounds (58 mg/g DE). The most abundant compound in S. enneaphylla and S. saetabensis was rutin (35 mg/g DE and 11.7 mg/g DE, respectively), whereas isorhamnetin-O-rutinoside was dominant in S. pulcherrima (11.5 mg/g DE). Several assays were performed to evaluate the potential bioactivity of the three species of Sarcocapnos. These assays included antioxidant and radical scavenging (ABTS and DPPH), reducing power (CUPRAC and FRAP), phosphomolybdenum and metal chelating, and enzyme inhibitory activity (acetylcholinesterase, amylase, butyrylcholinesterase, glucosidase, and tyrosinase). In general, all methanolic extracts presented the highest phenolic and flavonoid contents, as well as the highest radical scavenging, antioxidant, and enzyme inhibitory properties. This relationship between phenolics and bioactivity was confirmed by multivariate analysis.

Red seaweeds are a major industrial source of agar and carrageenan. They also contain high amounts of other polysaccharides and higher amounts of proteins than brown seaweeds. Some species of red seaweed also contain polyphenols with antioxidant activities as well as being a source of carotenoids and phycobiliproteins. However, there are currently no commercial-scale methods for extracting those bioactive compounds. This chapter provides an overview of various methods for extracting all these functional compounds from red seaweeds. Whereas the main emphasis is on the extractions of proteins, extractions of polysaccharides (carrageenan and agar) and antioxidants (phenolic compounds) are covered. Multi-extraction approaches for extractions of bioactive compounds from red seaweeds are also described.


Cabbage is known as a rich source of bioactive compounds including carotenoids and phenolic compounds which may have antibacterial and antioxidant properties. This investigation was undertaken to estimate the effect of using different organic solvents on the total polyphenols content, antibacterial and antioxidant capacities of red and white cabbage. Phenolic compounds analysis was performed by Reversed-Phase High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (RP-HPLC) and antioxidant activities of cabbage were evaluated using DPPH radical scavenging and β-carotene-linoleic acid bleaching.Methanol has the highest extraction yields of 23.83 and 22.05 %. Alcoholic extracts from red cabbage exhibit the highest content of total polyphenols (205.66-190.77 mg GAE/ 100g DW) and flavonoids (137.26-123.6 mg CE/100g DW) meanwhile; white cabbage had the highest content of β-carotene and chlorophyll. Red cabbage exhibited the highest DPPH scavenging value (IC50= 257, 80 μg/ml) and the highest β-carotene-linoleic acid bleaching (73.85%). Significant correlations were found between antioxidant activity of extracts from cabbage samples and the contents of polyphenols and flavonoids. The studied extracts didn’t show an antibacterial activity against tested germs.

Abstract Objective: The aim of the study was to determine the content of polyphenols and flavonoids from sixteen selected medicinal plants from the spontaneous Romanian flora and fifteen tinctures obtained with propylene glycol. Methods: The polyphenols were determined by the Folin-Ciocalteu method while the flavonoids by using a colorimetric method from the 10th edition of the Romanian Pharmacopoeia. The antioxidant activities of the most common nine medicinal plants and fifteen tinctures were determined by DPPH and ABTS methods. Results: The results highlighted that the phenolic compounds and flavonoids have contributed to their antioxidant activities and the medicinal plants and tinctures included in the study are rich sources of natural antioxidants. Conclusions: There are a wide variety of extraction methods for the determination of phenolics and flavonoids. The study confirms a correlation between phenolic and flavonoid contents obtained by using the DPPH and ABTS tests.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of processing by cooking in natura fruits on the content of bioactive compounds - vitamin C and ascorbic acid, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, carotenoids and anthocyanins, lycopene and β-carotene - and on antioxidant activity - DPPH and FRAP - of 9 varieties of commercial and non-commercial tomatoes. The fruits were harvested when they reached the point of physiological maturation, selected and evaluated in natura, and after grinding and cooking for 30 minutes. At the end of the experiment it was found that all bioactive compounds analyzed showed quantitative reductions when the fruits were processed, with cherry cultivars - 7, 8 and 9 - those that showed superior results compared to different bioactive compounds evaluated, proving to be interesting to be better explored. Regarding the antioxidant activities, the processed fruits of these cultivars showed less losses showing potential to be submitted to processing.

Crab apple (Malus baccata (L.) Borkh.) was mainly distributed in Europe as an ornamental plant, but the nutritional properties of its edible fruits were not fully revealed. The aim of the current study was to characterize the phytochemical composition of ripen carb apple fruits and to evaluate their nutritional and antioxidant potentials. The fruits were assayed for moisture and ash content, proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, titratable acidity (TA), pH, total phenolic compounds and natural pigments. Among the analyzed carbohydrates cellulose was found in the highest content (6% dw), followed by sugars (sucrose, glucose and fructose) and 1.8 % dw uronic acids. The total chlorophylls and carotenoids contents in their fruits were 6.51 and 4.80 μg/g fw, respectively. Total monomeric anthocyanins were not detected. The highest content of total phenolic compounds (2.67 mg GAE/g fw) was found in 95 % ethanol extract from fruits, while the total flavonoids were relatively low – 0.1 mg QE/g fw. DPPH assay (17.27 mM TE/g fw) and FRAP assay (14.34 mM TE/g fw) demonstrated in vitro antioxidant activities of crabapple. Malus baccata fruits were evaluated as a rich source of dietary fibers and phenolic compounds with significant antioxidant potential that could be used in human nutrition.
