Abstract. Alfian RL, Iskandar BS, Gunawan B. 2018. The local wisdom of the coastal community of Bakaran Village, Central Java, Indonesia, in maintaining rice to improve the food security. Asian J Ethnobiol 1: 47-52. On the basis of tradition, the community of Bakaran Village, Juwana, Pati, Central Java has prohibited (pantang) to sell of the cooked rice (nasi). This prohibition or Pantangan of the Bakaran community appears to be due to Nyai Ageng Bakaran, the founder of the village. The aim of the present study was to elucidate the meaning of prohibition (pantangan) on the selling of cooked rice, and its functions for improving food security in the village. The qualitative with ethnographical and ethnoecological approach was applied in this study. Several techniques namely the observation, participant observation, the deep interview, and the literature study were carried out. The result of the study shows that the Pantangan of selling the cooked rice was initially undertaken based on a story of Nyai Ageng Bakaran that provided a message to his community not to sell the cooked rice and better sharing it with others. This Pantangan has some meaning and values, such as instilling the values of mutual sharing, helping and caring among the community members. In addition, Pantangan teaches that prosperity is not always measured with the money, but keeping people away from starving is a form of prosperity. The Pantangan functions as one of the ways by which Bakaran community ensures the security of food needs. Indeed, the Pantangan is also functioned as a form of actualization of their identity.

The increasing number of people who are not accompanied by the expansion of the area in Delanggu Village has resulted in reduced land for farming to meet food needs independently. The majority of the yards owned by residents in this village have an average area of 3 m2 which is relatively narrow. Vegetable cultivation with vertical farming techniques is one solution to overcome these problems. This cultivation can be done on vertical media so it does not require a large area. The purpose of this activity is so that the community can meet their food needs in the form of vegetables independently so as to create household food security. The service activity was carried out in Tegalsari Hamlet, Delanggu Village which was attended by 17 PKK members, 9 cloud community members and 6 teenagers. The community service method is carried out in stages, namely: preparation of tools and materials, socialization of efforts to create food security through vegetable cultivation with verticulture farming techniques and the correct way of vegetable cultivation starting from seeding, care and harvesting, and finally monitoring participants viaWhatsApp and offline. From the series of activities, the participation and enthusiasm of the participants was quite good. PKK members apply it more, because they have more time at home compared to the general public and youth groups.

<p>This article explores the form of compromise between Islam and local tradition (adat) in the religious practices of Muslims in Bugis community in South Sulawesi. Islam is an integral part of Bugis lives and is positioned as the main reference so that it encourages Bugis community members to become more fanatic than others. However, in some cases, it is not uncommon for religious practices that have traditional nuances. In fact, the local tradition is in a position that exceeds the role of religion as reflected in the celebration of Islamic holidays. This condition allows the attraction between religion and local tradition to occur in the practice of everyday life of the Bugis community. The question is at what level do conflicts and compromises occur between local tradition and religion among the Bugis community? To answer this question, an investigation was carried out using qualitative methods that put forward and applying the techniques of participant observation and literature study. The results show that points of compromise were discovered where religion and local tradition complemented each other. The tendency to compromise Islam and local tradition is motivated by not only the low understanding of religion itself but also the desire to maintain the ancestral local traditions that have been practiced for a long time in their community. The compromise of Islam and local tradition in religious practices have resulted in the escape of their respective positions, and it makes the role of religion tends to weaken.</p>
