Abstract. Palupi T, Pangaribuan F, Hearnes, Riyanto F, Wasian, Zulfita D. 2020. Morphological and agronomical characters of four black rice varieties from West Kalimantan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 1065-1073. The black rice paddy is a variety of rice known to have anthocyanin content which is beneficial to human health. Yet, the black rice paddy is relatively rare to find as not all rice-growing areas develop and plant black rice. West Kalimantan has several potential black rice varieties which are potentials as genetic resources to create a new black rice variety in plant breeding programs. This research was aimed to describe the morphological and agronomical characteristics of four black rice varieties from West Kalimantan, namely Nanga Taman, Mukok, Senakin, and Ensalang. The study was conducted at the experimental garden of Agriculture Faculty, University of Tanjungpura, Pontianak using Completely Randomized Design. Each variety consisted of six replications, and each replication consisted of 3 samples. We observed 12 characters of the vegetative phase and 21 characters of the generative period. The four varieties had similarities in 13 characters and differences in 20 characters. The results showed that the four black rice had superior properties such as the stem angle and the angle of the leaves is upright so that it reduces interference from bird pests. Among them, the Senakin variety had an advantage over the three other varieties in terms of plant height, age, the number of productive tillers, and weight of grains.

improving nutritional status of human health. Rice as a staple food for Indonesian community is potential to be increased its nutritional content to produce rice with high vitamin, mineral and/or antioxidant (anthocyanin) which is benefit for human health. Anthocyanin is a compound that produced by plants. Biofortification of rice for high content of anthocyanin was carried out through development of red and black rice through conventional breeding. Bio-fortification is more effective than fortification to combat generative diseases. Two red improved rice varieties were released with high anthocyanin content were released by IAARD, namely Inpari 24 Gabusan as a red rice variety with anthocyanin content of 8 ug/100g and Inpari 25 Opak Jaya as a waxy red rice variety with anthocyanin content of 11 ug/100g. Red rice varieties produced from biofortification are rapidly adopted by farmers and stake-holders. Several number of red and black rice advanced lines having higher anthocyanin content are being tested in the field for their yield trial. These lines could be released as red and black rice varieties that better than the existing varieties. In order to overcome degenerative diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and high blood consuming functional food from bio-fortification would be more efficient than that from fortification, because the important compound which added through bio-fortification is derivative and eternal.

Keywords: Red and black rice, anthocyanin, bio-fortification

The aim of this study was to prove that Arabica coffee introgressed with C. liberica, have resistance to Meloidogyne paranaensis (Mp). Open pollinated fruits were harvested from mother plants of 29 Arabica coffee genotypes from the IAPAR germplasm bank. Seeds were collected from the fruits and were sown to obtain seedlings to test the resistance to Mp. The experiment was set up in a completely randomized design with 29 coffee genotypes, 8 replications, and one plant per plot. Cultivars Catuaí Vermelho IAC 99 and IPR 100 were used as susceptible and resistant checks, respectively. Seedlings with three to four pairs of leaves were inoculated with 1,400 eggs and juveniles J2 of Mp (IP). At 120 days after inoculation, seedlings were evaluated by counting the nematodes per gram of roots, and the final nematodes population was obtained (FP). The reproduction factor (RF) was calculated using the formula: RF = FP/IP. The reproduction factor reduction was used to classify the resistance levels of genotypes, which were classified as highly resistant (HR), resistant (R), moderately resistant (MR), moderately susceptible (MS), susceptible (S) an highly susceptible (HS). All genotypes differed from Catuaí in resistance factor (RF), five of which did not differ from IPR 100 for RF, and only the line IAPAR 15242 had RF < 1.0. Out of 28 Arabica genotypes introgressed with C. liberica, five HR, 11 R, 11 MR and one MS were identified. However, only IAPAR 15242 and IPR 100 were classified as HR and presented 100% of HR plants, but only the first showed an RF < 1.0. Results revealed that these Arabica coffee genotypes with introgression of C. liberica genes have great potential to be used in breeding programs and they are a new alternative as a source of resistance.

This study was conducted to extract and encapsulate anthocyanins from black rice bran using chitosan-alginate nanoparticles. Ten black rice varieties were screened for the anthocyanin content and the variety with the highest anthocyanins was used for the encapsulation. The anthocyanins were extracted by defatting the bran with n-hexane and soaking it with 85% acidified ethanol. The crude anthocyanin extract (CAE) was freeze-dried at -110°C for 48 h and then encapsulated in chitosan-alginate nanoparticles using two processes: ionic pre-gelation and polyelectrolyte complex formation. The mass ratio of chitosan and alginate polymers used in this study was 100:10. The treatments applied were as follows: T0-0 mg CAE, T1-10 mg CAE, T2-20 mg CAE, and T3-30 mg CAE. The resulting capsules were characterized in terms of chemical properties, surface morphology, particle size, polydispersive index, encapsulation efficiency, and 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity. Screening of rice samples indicated that Ominio bran had the highest anthocyanin content (36.11 mg/g). Anthocyanins were successfully encapsulated in the matrix as shown by the Scanning Electron Microscopy images and Fourier Transform Infrared spectra of the anthocyanin-loaded chitosan-alginate nanoparticles. Among the different concentrations of CAE, T3 had the highest encapsulation efficiency (68.9%) and antioxidant scavenging activity (38.3%) while T1 and T2 had the lowest. Ascending particle size was observed for T0 (358.5 nm), T3 (467.9 nm), T1 (572.3 nm), and T2 (635.9 nm). All anthocyanin-loaded capsules were found to be of nano-size (<1000 nm). The study concluded that chitosan-alginate nanoparticles can be a good encapsulating material for anthocyanin.

Upland soils in West Kalimantan used for agricultural activities reach about 483,077 hectares. However, this land potential is not yet optimally exploited due to poor soil fertility. To increase its productivity, there is a need to invent technology packages that are not only effective but also efficient. This research is designed to study the growth of upland rice and the changes in certain soil properties after low-input treatment applications. This research used a Completely Randomized Design. There were 6 treatments and 4 replications. The treatment levels were P0 (no treatment), P1 (7tons of cow manure/ha + 300 kg NPK compound), P2 (15tons of cow manure/ha + 300 kg NPK compound), P3 (7tons of compost/ha + 300 kg NPK compound), P4 (15tons of compost/ha + 300 kg NPK compound), and P5 (600 kg/ha NPK compound). Parameters included plant height and dry weight, NPK absorptions, soil pH, organic C content, and NPK contents after soil treatment. The results showed that upland rice responded well to low-input amendment treatments compared to that of grow-in soil with no input treatments. Both the treatments using 15 tons of cow manure and 15 tons of rice straw compost per hectare, each plus 300 kg of NPK, were suggested to be further research topics for treatments in upland soil of West Kalimantan.

ABSTRACT: Collard greens Brassica oleracea var. acephala is one of the most important horticultural grown in Brazil for human feeding. The caterpillar Ascia monuste orseis (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) stands out among the important pest in Brassicaceae causing severe plant defoliation. The objective of this study was to identify resistant genotypes (antixenosis) in 26 collard greens genotypes to A. monuste orseis. In free-choice test, randomized blocks were used; and in the non-choice test we adopted a completely randomized design. Manteiga de Jundiaí, crespa de Capão Bonito, couve de Arthur Nogueira 1, manteiga I-1811, manteiga de Ribeirão Pires I-1811, orelha-de-elefante and Pires 1 de Campinas presented antixenosis (non-preference for oviposition). Pires 1 de Campinas, manteiga I-1811, manteiga de São José, verde-escura and manteiga de Monte Alegre presented antixenosis (non-preference for feeding). These collard greens genotypes can be directly used by farmers for cultivation or by breeders as donor sources in breeding programs for resistance to A. monuste orseis.

Background: The beneficial elements availability such as silicon was determined rice growth and yield. Rice requires a different dose of silicon during the growing period. Experiment was aimed to investigate the effect of silicate levels, rice varieties and the interaction of the two on the growth and yields of two local Indonesian varieties of rice. Methods: A completely randomized design of factorial pattern with 4 replications was used in the experiment. Treatments consisted of No added SiO2 (Si-0); added 100 and 200 kg SiO2 ha-1, respectively for Si-100 and Si-200 and two local rice varieties, Pandan wangi (P1) and Mentik susu (P2). Result: The treatment had no significant effect on growth and yield of rice. Addition of 100 and 200 kg SiO2 ha-1 to P1 and P2 did not show a significant difference on the growth and yield of rice compared to control (P0). Plant height and root dry weight at P1 was lower than P2, but the 1,000-grain weight was showed, vice versa. Silicon addition up to 200 kg SiO2 ha-1 may not be recommended to be applied in rice cultivation, especially Pandan wangi and Mentik susu varieties. Improving the two varieties, further research is needed by increasing the silicon doses.

This research aims to study the differences in the mechanism of salinity stress tolerance in rice varieties from the aspect of organic acid exudation and accumulation. Research was conducted in March to November 2010, at the Laboratory Kopertis Region X. This two-factor factorial experiments using Completely Randomized Design with three replications. The first factor is selected rice varieties, namely: P1 = Cirata; P2 = Cisadane; P3 = Widas; P4 = P5 = IR66 and Membromo. The second factor is the concentration of NaCl, namely: G0 = 0.0 ppm NaCl at pH 4.0 (control), and G1 = 4000 ppm NaCl at pH 4.0. The results showed that, the mechanism of tolerance in rice varieties occur through the mechanism of accumulation and exudation of organic acids. Accumulation and exudation of organic acids, such as Oxalic Acid, Malic, Citrate and Acetate in rice varieties was seized NaCl, can be used as a reference to determine the varieties tolerant and sensitive to stress, Na + and Cl- in screening of plants in determining tolerance (sensitive or tolerant), especially for varieties of rice plants.
