Orange-spotted grouper is one of the coral reef fish has the economic value and exploited by local fisherman. Information about the size structure and sex ratio are urgent to formulate a policy for sustainability. This research aims to analyze the size structure and sex ratio of the orange-spotted grouper in Kwandang Bay. The research was conducted from December 2016 to November 2017. Sampling is carried out twice a month for one year. The total sample of orange-spotted grouper used for the analysis of the sex ratio was 149 individuals. Sample of orange-spotted grouper collected from fish landed and middlemen (grouper traders) at the Kwandang Fishing Port. Data analysis applying chi-square. The results show that males bigger than females. The sex ratio of orange-spotted grouper is 87.25 % female, 7.38 % male, and 5.37 % hermaphrodites. Orange-spotted grouper dominated by females and undergoes a gonad differentiation to male (protogynous hermaphrodite). It is concluded that The size of the male orange-spotted grouper is larger than that of the female grouper. The caught orange-spotted grouper is dominated by the female phase and undergoes a differentiation of the gonad from female to male (protogynous hermaphrodite)

Abstract Introduction Greater vulnerability to stress-related sleep disturbance (i.e., sleep reactivity) is a risk factor for chronic insomnia (CI). What has not been investigated is whether greater sleep reactivity, as assessed by the Ford Insomnia Response to Stress Test (FIRST), predicts the onset of acute insomnia (AI), and more, whether greater sleep reactivity predicts the transition from AI to CI. Methods A national cohort of 1,222 good sleeper subjects (68% female; mean age=53.2 years) were prospectively assessed to estimate the incidence of AI and CI. The FIRST was completed at baseline and sleep diaries were completed on a daily basis for a period of one year. Subjects were categorized based on their FIRST scores (high, FIRST>16; low, FIRST≤16). Subjects were also grouped based on whether they developed AI (two consecutive weeks with a frequency of ≥ 3 nights per week of sleep initiation or maintenance problems) or maintained good sleep (GS; n=896). For those subjects that transitioned to AI (n=326), they were also grouped based on whether or not they developed CI (insomnia ≥ 3 nights/week for at least three months; n=23). Chi-square analyses were performed to determine if higher FIRST scores at baseline predicted the incidence of AI or CI. Results 32.5% of subjects in the high FIRST group met criteria for AI at some point during the one-year interval, whereas 22.5% of subjects in the low FIRST group experienced AI (χ 2=15.2, p<.001). In contrast, FIRST did not predict CI status (low FIRST, 8.5% CI, high FIRST, 5.6% CI; χ 2=1.1, p=.30). Conclusion Greater sleep reactivity predicted incident AI but not the onset of CI. While these findings suggest that sleep reactivity may be a predisposing factor for AI, data are not consistent with previous findings showing FIRST scores are predictive of the development of CI. It’s possible that the present study was underpowered to detect these differences, given that the incidence of CI was low (less than 2% of the total sample). Additional analyses are ongoing to evaluate the temporal association between stressful life events and AI in subjects with high and low FIRST scores. Support Perlis: NIH R01AG041783, K24AG055602

Abstract Lobster is an important economic fishery resource in domestic and international trade. The high economic value of lobster due to increasing market demand has led to its intensive exploitation. The enactment of specific regulations on lobster proves the urgency of its management. Madura Strait is one of the unique biogeographical sea regions of East Java. This research was conducted in January-March 2021 at Pasir Hitam Beach, Situbondo. The purpose of this study was to determine the species composition of lobsters, the frequency distribution and the growth form, and the sex ratio. The analysis applied is class distribution of length and weight classes, regression analysis, and chi-square. The lobster catches consist of 4 species, namely Scalloped spiny lobster (Panulirus homarus), Ornate spiny lobster (P. ornatus), Painted spiny lobster (P. versicolor), and Mud spiny lobster (P. polyphagus). P. homarus is the most dominant species. The frequency distribution of carapace length and weight of P. homarus, P. ornatus, and P. versicolor has met the minimum size limits rules. The length and weight relationship of P. Homarus and P. ornatus were negative allometric, while P. versicolor isometric. Lobster sex ratio is in a balanced condition.

The population biology and reproduction of the hermit crab Clibanarius longitarsus were studied with emphasis on size structure, sex ratio, breeding season and fecundity. Specimens were sampled monthly over a period of one year (January–December 2003) at Costa do Sol mangrove, Maputo Bay, southern Mozambique. A total of 597 individuals was obtained of which 202 were males, 192 non-ovigerous females and 203 ovigerous females. Annual size–frequency distributions were polymodal for males and bimodal for non-ovigerous and ovigerous females, respectively. Sexual dimorphism was recorded by the larger average size attained by males in relation to females. Sex ratio was female-biased during most months of the study. Clibanarius longitarsus showed a higher reproductive activity with two major peaks (March and October). Juvenile recruitment was continuous throughout the study period. Clutch size was positively associated with female size. The high number of ovigerous females as obtained in the present population may evidence a higher reproductive activity displayed by C. longitarsus at Costa do Sol mangrove.

Sex ratio and size structure constitute basic information in assessing reproductive potential and estimating stock size in fish populations. One hundred fifty-one individuals of Micropogonias furnieri caught by experimental otter trawls, in three zones (inner, central, and outer) of Sepetiba Bay between October 1998 and September 1999 were examined. Males outnumbered females (1.3:1.0) in all zones but no significant differences were detected. Only in the outer zone (5.0:1.0) were male/female rates significantly different according to the chi-square test. No temporal differences were observed in sex ratio. Fish size ranged from 81 to 244 mm total length (TL) with significant differences in 155 to 185 mm TL size classes, where males predominated, and a slightly higher number of females were observed for the smaller size class (TL = 95-150 mm). Size distribution varied according to the zone, with juveniles predominating in the inner and adults in the outer zone. Spatial difference in size structure observed in this study indicates that the inner bay is a rearing ground during the first life-cycle period, and movement toward the sea occurs as fish increase in size.

Gonado-somatic index and fecundity are tools for measuring the sexual maturity and ability of animals to reproduce.  This study investigates the reproduction of Trichiurus lepturus. Specifically, this aimed to determine the sex ratio, the GSI, the relationship between fecundity and total length, fecundity and total weight, fecundity and ovary weight. The Descriptive Method of research was used.  Percentage and chi-square was utilized in determining the percentage of occurrence and sex ratio respectively.   Pearson r Product Moment Coefficient of Correlation was used to determine the relationships of the parameters. The study revealed that females outnumbered males and the sex ratio for different month showed significant difference.  Spawning season was observed to occur in November and December as revealed in its GSI values and it synchronized with the full and new moon phases.  Fecundity is positively correlated with body weight, body size, and ovary weight where ovary weight is observed to be the best index for fecundity.  The results of this study could be used further for formal stock assessment of cutlassfish fishery.

Objective: To assess primary molars early loss in mixed dentition prevalence. Method: A study was carried out in children aged 6 to 12 years. Deciduous molar loss was considered early when it occurred before Nolla stage 6 (full formed crown) of the permanent successor or one year before its physiological exfoliation. Periapical radiographs were obtained to verify the presence of the permanent successor and the level of root formation, as well as the need for placement of fixed space maintainer lingual arch or Nance button. For the study of frequency distribution of early dental loss in relation to gender and dentition, we used the Chi-square test of 5% probability level and the non-parametric Mann-Whitney test for adequate statistical analysis. Results: Of the 315 children examined, 159 (50.47%) were male and 156 (49.52%) were female. Only 25 (7.9%) presented multiple dental losses in the posterior region, 19 in the lower arch and 6 in the upper arch. In the inferior one there was predominance of first and second deciduous molars loss. There was no difference in the association between genders and the occurrence of multiple dental losses (χ² (1) = 0.03, p>0.05). Conclusion: The prevalence of deciduous teeth premature loss was of 7.9% and the most affected teeth were the first and second molars in the lower arch. Lingual arch space holders were installed in 6 children, who will remain with it until the permanent successors erupt into the oral cavity.
